This study examined the relationship between anxiety, depression, perceived self-efficacy and biographical variables, before and after the termination of a first trimester pregnancy. Seventy-six participants were recruited from three health facilities in the Western Cape, South Africa. Scores on the State-Trait Anxiety Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory and a Self-Efficacy Scale revealed that high levels of state-anxiety and moderate levels of depression were experienced before abortion. Levels of anxiety and depression generally decreased significantly within a three-week period after the abortion. High self-efficacy was related to lowerlevels of anxiety and depression. Higher levels of education and self-efficacy and low levels of depression, trait-anxiety and gestational age were significantly related to healthy short-term adjustment. It was shown that pre-abortion depression and self-efficacy scores had the power to predict post-abortion depression.

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to analyze the medical and surgical methods of first trimester of pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A hospital based retrospective study done at Lumbini Zonal Hospital, Butwal over the period of one year, where all the women who had first trimester abortion services were analyzed. Age, parity, education status, failure rates and post abortion contraception were analyzed.RESULTS: There were total of 478 women who had abortion services, of which 244 women had medical method of abortion. Among them 4.89% were teenagers and 11.29% were primigravida and 6.9% were uneducated. The failure rate for medical method was 9% and for surgical method was 1.7%. Most women at their post abortion period asked for condoms, followed by DMPA, IUD and OCP as a method of contraception.CONCLUSION: Failure rate of medical method was high and acceptance of long acting post abortion contraception was low.Journal of Universal College of Medical Sciences (2016) Vol.04 No.01 Issue 13, page: 1-5

People who stutter are frequently viewed as more anxious than nonstutterers and as being depressed. Further, a strong and pervasive stereotype is held by nonstutterers that people who stutter are guarded, nervous, and tense. This study examined self-perceptions of general state and trait anxiety, depression, and communication attitude in matched groups of stutterers and nonstutterers. Results refute the assertion that people who stutter are more anxious or depressed than those who do not. Anxiety and depression are not related to self-ratings of stuttering severity. Communication attitude is negative for this group of people who stutter and becomes increasingly negative as self-ratings of stuttering become more severe. People who stutter, grouped by severity rating, differed in the strength of the relation between measures of communication attitude, anxiety, and depression. Findings suggest that the anxiety of people who stutter is restricted to their attitude towards communication situations and that it is a rational response to negative communication experiences.

We investigated the possible relations of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level, a parameter of blood glucose control with scores on anxiety, depression, and self-efficacy for 113 outpatients (55 men and 58 women) with type II diabetes mellitus. The relation between the HbA1c level and the self-efficacy scores as well as with the ratings of anxiety and depression was evaluated. A significant relation was found for the HbA1c level with the scores; however, self-efficacy and anxiety and depression showed no association. These results suggest that HbA1c can be maintained at better levels by increasing self-efficacy of diabetic patients.

Night shift disturbs normal circadian rhythm, thus leads to several psychological problems. We aim to investigate the anxiety, depression, social support and self-efficacy of night-shift nurses compared with day-shift nurses and explore the association between emotional status and social support as well as the combined influence of social support and self-efficacy on emotional status. We conducted this quantitative comparative study in a hospital from January 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020, using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), and General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). The HADS-A and HADS-D scores were higher for the night-shift nurses than for the day-shift nurses (7.38 ± 3.228 vs. 5.81 ± 3.180 and 6.79 ± 3.444 vs. 5.43 ± 3.155, respectively, P < 0.01). The family support, friend support, other support and total social support scores were lower for the night-shift nurses than for the day-shift nurses. In both groups, these scores were lower for nurses with suspected anxiety than for those without anxiety (61.16 ± 12.208 vs. 66.35 ± 9.976, P < 0.01) and were lower for nurses with suspected depression than for those without depression (59.91± 11.606 vs. 66.77 ± 10.320, P < 0.01). The item scores, total scores and total mean score for the night-shift nurses were significantly lower than those for the day-shift nurses (P < 0.01). Social support and self-efficacy had noticeable regression effects on nurses’ anxiety and depression, and both variables had significant negative effects on anxiety and depression. This study suggests that night-shift nurses may have higher anxiety and depression than day-shift nurses. Nurses with suspected anxiety and depression nurses may have lower social support than those without anxiety and depression.

Abstract Background. Pregnancy has disease-modifying effects in MS. First trimester abortion might be followed by increased MS activity. MS with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) autoantibodies is a rare and agressive disease variant. Objectives. This case illustrates severe inflammatory reactivation after surgical abortion in MS patient who carries MOG antibodies. Methods. Case-report. Patient provided written informed consent for information and images to be published. Results. MRI and CSF biomarkers indicated high inflammatory activity post-abortion. Conclusions. Pregnancy termination in combination with MOG antibody carriership and termination of dimethyl fumarate treatment just prior abortion have had contributed to extensive reactivation of MS.

Irrational beliefs (IB) are believed, in cognitive behavioral therapies, to be a prime cause of psychopathologies including anxiety, depression, problem eating, and alcohol misuse. “Food addiction” (FA), which has been modeled on diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder, and emotional eating (EE) have both been implicated in the rise in overweight and obesity. Both FA and EE are associated with anxiety. Thus, in the present study, the hypothesis that IB is associated with FA and with EE was tested. Furthermore, possible mediation of these relationships by trait anxiety and depression (and EE for IB and FA) was examined. The responses of 239 adult participants to questionnaires measuring FA, IB, EE, depression, trait anxiety, and anthropometrics were recorded. The results revealed that IB was significantly positively correlated with FA and EE (and depression and trait anxiety). Furthermore, only EE mediated the effect of IB on FA and this was not moderated by BMI. Finally, trait anxiety (but not depression) mediated the effect of IB on EE. Exploratory analysis revealed a significant serial mediation such that IB predicted higher FA via elevated trait anxiety and emotional eating in that order. The results of this study suggest that IB may be a source of the anxiety that is associated with EE and FA and suggest that clinicians may find IB a target for treatment of those persons who report experiences of EE and FA. IB may play a role in food misuse that leads to elevated BMI.

Aims: This study was conducted to find out choice and acceptance of contraceptives in clients coming for first trimester abortion. Methods: This was a cross sectional descriptive study carried out from the records of clients who received comprehensive abortion care service in first trimester at Kasthamandap health care centre from June 2008 to June 2010. Results: Total 707 clients came for abortion who fulfilled inclusion criteria. Contraceptive acceptance was 49.5%. Most frequently used contraceptives were injectable (depot medroxyprogesterone) 22.8%, oral contraceptive pills 19.6%, condom 6.1%, intra-uterine contraceptive device 0.8% and norplant 0.3%. Conclusions: This study showed a low acceptance rate of contraception. This suggests the need for reviewing the policy of post abortion contraception. The study also highlighted that depot provera was the most accepted contraception. AbstractObjectiveResearchers tried to explain the overlap between anxiety and depression by suggesting that some items of self-administered questionnaires were badly selected and that both constructs should rather be considered as multidimensional. Thus, we hypothesise that the Spielberger trait anxiety inventory (TAI) includes items related to depression.MethodA non-clinical sample of 193 subjects filled out the TAI and the Hospitalised Anxiety–Depression Scale. Factors were postulated on the basis of item content and submitted to confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).ResultsWe found five factors: a 10-item anxiety factor containing three factors, a four-item unsuccessfulness factor correlated with the HADS anhedonia factor, and a six-item happiness factor.ConclusionThe TAI scale encompasses measures of anxiety, depression and well-being. Consequently, the overlap with other measures of depression may result from item selection. This work awaits replication in independent normal and pathological samples.
