This work presents a novel didactic methodology for the approximation of the students to the subject of Mechanics of Materials, with the aim of improving the understanding of the inertia moment, and its relevance on the mechanical behaviour of structures. The students have grouped on groups of two to three persons. The work consisted in designing the most efficient beam having in mind several design constraints. Tensile tests were performed to determine the relevant material properties. Those were used for the analytic dimensioning of the beams. The aim of the work is to obtain the highest efficiency possible, since it results in the best mark, as possible. The efficiency was measured by the maximum load on experimental bending testing, divided by the mass of the beam. The results, as well as the interest of the methodology are discussed. It is proved that this methodology can be useful for the students to apply theoretical concepts and, at the same time, to give a deeper understanding of real experimental tests.

Christians often seek to justify particular practices by appealing to scripture to authenticate them. On the subject of worship the paucity of relevant material can lead to the misuse of what is available. In recent times 1 Corinthians 12 – 14 has been exploited to find grounds for practices which seem to distort Paul’s teaching. A brief account of some of these flaws is followed by an exegetical study which seeks to demonstrate how the structure and coherence of Paul’s argument requires particular verses to be understood, in ways which are not widely recognised. This suggests modifications of some practices when Christians gather together.

The current work deals with experimental tests concerning the behaviour of different materials used in chemical industry when are exposed to diverse corrosions environments. During the research work four different metals have been tested, namely T15NiCr180, T15MoNiCr180, W4027 and W4059. The presented work is trying to classify the tested materials function to different chemical environment, different concentration of the environment, different temperature of the environment, and different expose time. Some of the substances which were considered as corrosion environment are: HNO3, H3PO4, NaCl, NH4Cl, C2H5OH, Petrol, NH4NO3, KNO3, K2CO3, Na2CO3, KMnO4, KOH and Ca (OH)2. The concentration of the corrosion solutions varies between 1% and 96%. Tests have been done at room temperature and hot environment of 100°C. Time is playing an important role on evolution of the corrosion. For this reason the samples have been analyzed after 48, 336, 720 and 2160 hours of exposes to chemical agents. To understand the comportment of the subject metals when are used in industry, samples have been tested for longer period of time, respectively 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. After each selected period of time the metallic samples were analyzed and measured to quantify the effect of the environment on the corrosion speed.

Abstract The great interest about out of plane behavior of masonry infill walls has recently increased since it is a key point in the seismic modelling of framed structures. Their contribute to the whole seismic resistance of a framed building cannot be skipped. After a review of the literature on the subject, this paper presents a trilinear constitutive model for the out of plane behavior of masonry infills based on the tensile strength of the constituents. Comparisons with literature model are provided and the identification of the model is based on experimental tests.

The influence of social capital on an individual’s educational achievements is the subject of numerous scientific papers. Research on social capital is most frequently based on Coleman’s (1988) or Bourdieu’s (1986) theories of capital, which are related to different paradigms of social theory: whereas Coleman’s approach has its roots in structural functionalism, Bourdieu’s approach contains elements of conflict theory. A number of authors, starting with Bourdieu, attempt to explain and prove that, when connected with the education of individuals, the activity of social capital facilitates social reproduction. Other authors support the notion that social capital is, in fact, a powerful weapon that encourages social mobility. A third group of researchers emphasise that neither of these approaches in isolation can entirety explain the influences of social capital on an individual’s education (Ho, 2003). The present paper offers a review of research focusing on the influences of social capital on educational achievements, while outlining the fundamental differences between the two theoretical approaches that are most frequently used for research of this topic. The aim of the paper is to explain the influence of social capital on an individual’s educational achievements under Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s theoretical concepts, and to establish whether combining the approaches is possible. The conclusion and arguments show that it is legitimate to use all three theoretical approaches.

Over the years educators have adopted a variety of technologies in a bid to improve student engagement, interest and understanding of abstract topics taught in the classroom. There has been an increasing interest in immersive technology such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). The ability of VR to bring ideas to life in three dimensional spaces in a way that is easy for students to understand the subject matter makes it one of the important tools available today for education. A key feature of VR is the ability to provide multi-sensory visuals and virtual interaction to students wearing a Head Mounted Display thus providing students better learning experience and connection to the subject matter. Virtual Reality has been used for training purposes in the health sector, military, workplace training, gamification and exploration of sites and countless others. With the potential benefits of virtual technology in visualizing abstract concepts in a realistic virtual world, this paper presents a plan to study the use of situated cognition theory as a learning framework to develop an immersive VR application that would be used to train and prepare students studying Telecommunications Engineering for the workplace. This paper presents a review of literature in the area of Virtual Reality in education, offers insight into the motivation behind this research and the planned methodology in carrying out the research.

This paper presents an experience report concerning the use of a platformcalled “Storium” in the subject of “Interactive Fiction” for undergraduatestudents, from a Digital Design Course. The objective was to use the learningtheories of constructivism and multimedia learning to create an instructionalplan devised to teach the students how to create complex interactive narrativesand stories from a practical perspective. During the course, the students learnedthe subject’s theoretical concepts and applied them directly, creating their owninteractive fiction. The results from this research proposes a new approach, usingdigital tools whose resources provides an environment for the creation ofinteractive narratives. These narratives can be used to aid future designs ofinstructional plans for complex writing concepts.

Theoretical knowledge may contain various levels of abstraction represented by logical constructions from the observed characteristics of objects from the subject area of the theory. The degree of abstractness can be de-scribed by the complexity of the structures obtained from the initial observational terms. Such auxiliary construc-tions are characterized as explicit or implicitdefinitions of theoretical concepts in terms of observational. One of the techniques for constructing such definitions is the operationalization of abstractions by a system of reduction sentences. In this case a theoretical concept is characterized as “open” and plays a role of logical and methodo-logical constraints for expanding the possible connections of the theoretical model with the help of concepts from the domain of intended practical application.

The relation of Latin lyric poetry to the lyric poetry of the Romance peoples remains one of the interesting problems of medieval literature. It has already challenged the industry of generations of investigators with no definite result. And it may be doubted whether conclusions which are self-convincing will be reached in the immediate future. The chief hindrance to a satisfactory solution is presented, of course, by the incompleteness of relevant material. The examples of Latin lyrics which may be considered as expressive of natural emotion are few in number before the end of the eleventh century, and the poems of William IX are the first in Romance. There may be found here and there, to be sure, scattered hints of the existence of non-artistic poetry, whether in Latin or the vernacular, but the information so furnished by Latin writers is uncertain as well as meager. Widely different interpretations may be put on it. Contradictory theories find inconclusive support in it, further confusing an already perplexing problem. In view of all this doubt, and the difficulties with which the subject is still beset, it may not be unprofitable to go over the ground once more, and arrange the documents which allude to non-literary poetry, Latin or Romance, in their chronological order from the first century to the eleventh. While nothing new may be discovered from such a classification it will be useful to have at hand, grouped together, the texts from which the opposing factions draw their partisan arguments.


Various recurring themes in the history of the subject are reviewed. In the context of adaptation to a complex environment, one precondition for survival must be a capacity for object identity, which may be the most basic form of categorization. Evidence will be presented that suggests that the capacity is not learned. In considering learned associations among categorized items, a distinction is made between reflexive and reflective processes: that is between those associations in which a cue or signal provides an unambiguous route to the response, no matter how complex that route may be, in contrast to those in which learned information must be ordered and reordered ‘in thought'. An example of one experimental approach to the latter is provided. Finally, the problem of conscious awareness is considered in terms of stored categorical knowledge and associations, on the one hand, and a system that monitors them, on the other. Neurological evidence of disconnections between these different levels is reviewed.

A methodology to study the fatigue of a wind turbine blade in a 10KW small wind turbine is proposed in this paper. Two working conditions (namely normal fatigue operation condition and extreme wind condition) are considered based on IEC61400-2. The maximum load calculated from both cases were used as a reference to perform material sample fatigue study. Fiber-metal laminate – GLARE 3/2 with a centre 1mm notch on the external aluminium layers was modelled based on fracture mechanics approach to calculate the stress intensity factor and fatigue crack growth rate at maximum applied stress of 240Mpa. GLARE panel fabrication and tensile tests were included. The fatigue tests were performed on unnotched samples with stress range from 80Mpa to 300Mpa and plotted into S-N curve.
