Welding speed effect on joint properties in air and immersed friction stir welding of AA2014

In immersed friction stir welding, the workpiece is fully immersed in the water during welding. This work illustrates the effect of welding speed on mechanical properties and microstructure. Friction stir welding joints were produced using AA2014-T6 at different welding speeds ranging from 80 to 125 mm/min with constant rotational speed of 1000 r/min in air and immersed water conditions. Results revealed that with an increase in welding speed, the tensile strength of joint increased, this is due to a reduction in heat input while using both air and immersed friction stir welding, which in turn reduces the dissolution of strengthening precipitates. Microstructure result showed that grain size decreased with an increase in welding speed due to less heat input at increased welding speed. The dissolution of strengthening precipitates weakened with an increase in welding speed in both air and immersed friction stir welding, leading to an increase in hardness value at the nugget zone. Maximum tensile strength was obtained at a welding speed of 100 mm/min in immersed friction stir welding and was around 17% higher compared with a maximum tensile strength obtained using air friction stir welding.

The7A05 aluminum alloy of the 10mm thickness was welded by the friction stir welding. The microstructure and mechanical Properties of the welded joint was researched by the optical microscope, etc. The results showed: the microstructure of the weld nugget zone and the thermal mechanically affected zone were refined as the welding speed increasing when the rotate speed is constant. As the welding speed increasing the strength of extension of the welded joint is increasing at first and then stable basically. but the yield strength had no obvious change.

The force generation, joint mechanical and metallurgical properties of friction stir corner welded non-heat treatable AA 5086 aluminum alloy are investigated in this paper. The friction stir welding process is carried out with the plate thicknesses of 6 mm and 4 mm. The welding speed, tool rotational speed and tool plunge depth were considered as the process parameters to conduct the welding experiments. The machine spindle motor current consumption and tool down force generation during friction stir welding were analyzed. The microstructures of various joint regions were observed. The tensile samples revealed the tensile strength of 197 MPa with tool rotational and welding speeds of 1,000 rev/min and 150 mm/min respectively, which is 78 % of parent material tensile strength. A maximum micro hardness of 98 HV was observed at thermomechanically joint affected zone, which was welded with tool rotation of 1,000 rev/min and welding speed of 190 mm/min.

Abstract Dissimilar materials joining between AZ31 magnesium alloy and SPHC mild steel with Al-Mg powder additives were successfully produced by friction stir welding process. Al-Mg powder additives were set in a gap between AZ31 and SPHC specimen's butt prior to welding. The experiments were performed for different weight percentages of Al-Mg powder additives at welding speeds of 25 mm/min, 50 mm/min and 100 mm/min with a constant tool rotational speed of 500 rpm. The effect of powder additives and welding speed on tensile strength, microhardness, characterization across welding interface and fracture morphology were investigated. Tensile test results showed significant enhancement of tensile strength of 150 MPa for 10% Al and Mg (balance) powder additives welded joint as compared to the tensile strength of 125 MPa obtained for welded joint without powder additives. The loss of aluminium in the alloy is compensated by Al-Mg powder addition during welding under a suitable heat input condition identified by varying welding speeds. Microstructural analysis revealed that the Al-Mg powder was well mixed and dispersed at the interface of the joint at a welding speed of 50 mm/min. Intermetallic compound detected in the welding interface contributed to the welding strength.

Purpose The demand for aluminium alloys has been increasing in almost all the fields. In this study, the friction stir welding (FSW) of similar aluminium alloy AA 8011-h14 has been presented using three levels of tool rotational speed (n), tool tilt angle (ϴ) and tool feed (f). The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of welding parameters on various properties and time-temperature plots. Design/methodology/approach FSW was carried out using the L-9 orthogonal array of welding parameters generated using the Taguchi approach. Visual inspection and radiography testing were conducted to detect the surface and volume defects, respectively. Taguchi analysis was carried out to get optimised welding parameters for tensile testing. The microstructural analysis was carried out for the specimen possessing maximum tensile strength and the obtained grain structures were compared with the microstructure results of the base material. The peak process temperatures were noted and time-temperature plots were analysed for the varying parameters. The maximum value of hardness was recorded and analysed. Findings Visual inspection and radiography testing confirmed defect-free joints. The maximum tensile strength achieved was 84.44 MPa with 64.95 per cent efficiency. The optimised parameters obtained using Taguchi analysis for tensile testing were 1,500 rpm, 1° and 50 mm/min. Microstructure analysis for the specimen possessing maximum tensile strength revealed fine and equiaxed grains in the nugget zone. Time-temperature plots suggested the maximum temperature of 389 °C on the advancing side. A maximum hardness value of 36.4 HV was obtained in the nugget zone. Originality/value As per the knowledge of the authors, this study is the first attempt for the detailed experimental analysis on the FSW of this particular aluminium alloy AA 8011-h14.

This paper deals with the effective application of friction stir welding similar to butt joining technique.AL6063 T-6 alloys prepared in 125x 100 x 7mm thickness plate and FSW tool setup were H13 of diameter 25mm rotary tool with straight cylindrical pin profile. The maximum strength was considered for selection of combined process parameter. The process parameters were optimized using Taguchi method. The Rotational speed, welding speed, and axial speed are the main process parameter which taken into our consideration. The optimum process parameters are determined with reference to tensile strength of the joint. From the experiments, it was found the effects of welding parameter are the axial force is highest substantial parameter to determining the tensile strength of the joint. The paper which revealed the optimal values of process parameter are to acquire a maximum tensile strength of friction stir welded AL6063-T6 plates is 101.6Mpa with the combination level of rotational speed, welding speed and axial force are found to be 1100 RPM, 60 mm/min and 12.5 KN. validation test was carried out and results were nearer to the optimized results confirmed by the optimum results.

In this study, we constructed a new algorithm to determine the optimal parameters for friction stir welding including rotational speed, welding speed, axial force, tool pin profile, and tool material. The objective of welding is to maximize the ultimate tensile strength of the welded aluminum. The proposed method combines the response surface method and the modified differential evolution algorithm (RSM-MDE). RSM-MDE is a method that involves both experimental and simulation procedures. It is composed of four steps: (1) finding the number of parameters and their levels that affect the efficiency of the friction stir welding, (2) using RSM to formulate the regression model, (3) using the MDE algorithm to find the optimal parameter of the regression model obtained from (2), and (4) verifying the results obtained from step (3). The optimal parameters generated by the RSM-MDE method were a rotation speed of 1417.68 rpm, a welding speed of 60.21 mm/min, an axial force of 8.44 kN, a hexagon-tapered tool pin profile, and the SKD 11 tool material. The ultimate tensile strength obtained from this set of parameters was 294.84 MPa, which was better than that of the RSM by 1.48%.

Friction stir welding is a high potential technology for joining similar and dissimilar aluminum materials, utilized extensively in aerospace and automotive industrial applications to eradicate the problems like hot cracking, porosity, element loss, etc. due to the fusion welding process. This Research addresses the joining of two dissimilar materials of AA 5754 – H32 and AA 8090T6511 – Al-Li and their mechanical properties analysis with the effects of friction stir welding process parameters like tool rotational speed, welding speed and axial load on weld nugget zone formation quality. The significant roles of different tool pin profiles are also emphasized. A mathematical modeling equation was formed by using regression analysis to optimize the process parameter and found the best tool pin profile for defect-free weld nugget zone and higher tensile and hardness properties. This research also portrays the contribution of various pin profiles and each process parameter on the ultimate tensile strength by response surface methodology. The results indicate that the defect-free weld joints are observed with 1800 r/min of rotational speed, welding speed of 15 mm min−1 and 8.5 kN of axial load with hexagonal pin profile.

The 10 mm thick Aluminum 6061 plates have been corner joined using varied design and those were 45° Corner Butt and Corner Lap Joints (CB-45 & CL). Friction tool was hardened EMS 45. True experimental method was used with independent parameters is feed rate which varied at 10 mm/min, 15 mm/min and 30 mm/min respectively. Other parameter such as rotating speed was kept constant. Experiment results show that, CB-45 yields better properties than CL. The tensile strength of CB-45 reaches 163.7 MPa for 10 mm/min feed rate. Whilst CL produces joint with tensile strength equal 120 MPa for equal parameters. Microstructure observation showed that CB-45 produces fine and homogenous appearance of MgO compared to CL. This phenomenon is caused by the pin of CB-45 joint which fully penetrates the nugget zone which is not found in CL design. This microstructure in turn promotes higher tensile strength of CB-45.
