In this paper, the damping capacity and the structural influence of the hard coating on the given bladed disk are optimized by the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) coupled with the Kriging surrogate model. Material and geometric parameters of the hard coating are taken as the design variables, and the loss factors, frequency variations and weight gain are considered as the objective functions. Results of the bi-objective optimization are obtained as curved line of Pareto front, and results of the triple-objective optimization are obtained as Pareto front surface with an obvious frontier. The results can give guidance to the designer, which can help to achieve more superior performance of hard coating in engineering application.

In this paper, subdivided kriging multi-objective optimization (SKMOO) is proposed for the optimal design of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). The SKMOO with surrogate kriging model can obtain a uniform and accurate pareto front set with a reduced computation cost compared to conventional algorithms which directly adds the solution in the objective function area. In other words, the proposed algorithm uses a kriging surrogate model, so it is possible to know which design variables have the value of the objective function on the blank space. Therefore, the solution can be added directly in the objective function area. In the SKMOO algorithm, a non-dominated sorting method is used to find the pareto front set and the fill blank method is applied to prevent premature convergence. In addition, the subdivided kriging grid is proposed to make a well-distributed and more precise pareto front set. Superior performance of the SKMOO is confirmed by compared conventional multi objective optimization (MOO) algorithms with test functions and are applied to the optimal design of IPMSM for electric vehicle.

At present, hard coating structures are widely studied as a new passive damping method. Generally, the hard coating material is completely covered on the surface of the thin-walled structure, but the local coverage cannot only achieve better vibration reduction effect, but also save the material and processing costs. In this paper, a topology optimization method for hard coated composite plates is proposed to maximize the modal loss factors. The finite element dynamic model of hard coating composite plate is established. The topology optimization model is established with the energy ratio of hard coating layer to base layer as the objective function and the amount of damping material as the constraint condition. The sensitivity expression of the objective function to the design variables is derived, and the iteration of the design variables is realized by the Method of Moving Asymptote (MMA). Several numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that this method can obtain the optimal layout of damping materials for hard coating composite plates. The results show that the damping materials are mainly distributed in the area where the stored modal strain energy is large, which is consistent with the traditional design method. Finally, based on the numerical results, the experimental study of local hard coating composites plate is carried out. The results show that the topology optimization method can significantly reduce the frequency response amplitude while reducing the amount of damping materials, which shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the method.

This paper explores the combination of a classic mathematical function named “hyperbolic tangent” with a metaheuristic algorithm, and proposes a novel hybrid genetic algorithm called NSGA-II-BnF for multi-objective decision making. Recently, many metaheuristic evolutionary algorithms have been proposed for tackling multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). These algorithms demonstrate excellent capabilities and offer available solutions to decision makers. However, their convergence performance may be challenged by some MOPs with elaborate Pareto fronts such as CFs, WFGs, and UFs, primarily due to the neglect of diversity. We solve this problem by proposing an algorithm with elite exploitation strategy, which contains two parts: first, we design a biased elite allocation strategy, which allocates computation resources appropriately to elites of the population by crowding distance-based roulette. Second, we propose a self-guided fast individual exploitation approach, which guides elites to generate neighbors by a symmetry exploitation operator, which is based on mathematical hyperbolic tangent function. Furthermore, we designed a mechanism to emphasize the algorithm’s applicability, which allows decision makers to adjust the exploitation intensity with their preferences. We compare our proposed NSGA-II-BnF with four other improved versions of NSGA-II (NSGA-IIconflict, rNSGA-II, RPDNSGA-II, and NSGA-II-SDR) and four competitive and widely-used algorithms (MOEA/D-DE, dMOPSO, SPEA-II, and SMPSO) on 36 test problems (DTLZ1–DTLZ7, WGF1–WFG9, UF1–UF10, and CF1–CF10), and measured using two widely used indicators—inverted generational distance (IGD) and hypervolume (HV). Experiment results demonstrate that NSGA-II-BnF exhibits superior performance to most of the algorithms on all test problems.

Cell formation, scheduling, and facility layout are three main decisions in designing manufacturing cells. In this paper, we address the integration of these decisions in virtual manufacturing cells considering assembly aspects and process routing. We develop a mathematical model to determine the machine cells, the layout of machines and workstations on the shop floor, the processing route of parts, and the production sequence of operations on the machines. In this mathematical model, material handling costs and cycle time are minimized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that concurrently addresses the scheduling and layout of virtual manufacturing cells with assembly aspects and so-called criteria. To effectively solve the problem, a Population-based Simulated Annealing (PSA) combined with linear programming is proposed. The practical usability of the developed model is demonstrated in a case study. Finally, instances from the literature are solved to evaluate the performance of the PSA. The comparison results showed the superior performance of the PSA in comparison with CPLEX solver and standard simulated annealing.

Cylinder shell stiffened by rings is used commonly in submersibles, and structure strength should be verified in the initial design stage considering the thickness of the shell, the number of rings, the shape of ring section and so on. Based on the statistical techniques, a strategy for optimization design of pressure hull is proposed in this paper. Its central idea is that: firstly the design variables are chosen by referring criterion for structure strength, then the samples for analysis are created in the design space; secondly finite element models corresponding to the samples are built and analyzed; thirdly the approximations of these analysis are constructed using these samples and responses obtained by finite element model; finally optimization design result is obtained using response surface model. The result shows that this method that can improve the efficiency and achieve optimal intention has valuable reference information for engineering application.

Arriving optimal solutions is one of the important tasks in engineering design. Many real-world design optimization problems involve multiple conflicting objectives. The design variables are of continuous or discrete in nature. In general, for solving Multi Objective Optimization methods weight method is preferred. In this method, all the objective functions are converted into a single objective function by assigning suitable weights to each objective functions. The main drawback lies in the selection of proper weights. Recently, evolutionary algorithms are used to find the nondominated optimal solutions called as Pareto optimal front in a single run. In recent years, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) finds increasing applications in solving multi objective problems comprising of conflicting objectives because of low computational requirements, elitism and parameter-less sharing approach. In this work, we propose a methodology which integrates NSGA-II and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) for solving a two bar truss problem. NSGA-II searches for the Pareto set where two bar truss is evaluated in terms of minimizing the weight of the truss and minimizing the total displacement of the joint under the given load. Subsequently, TOPSIS selects the best compromise solution.

This paper establishes a novel optimal array reconfiguration (OAR) of a PV power plant for secondary frequency control of automatic generation control (AGC). Compared with the existing studies, the proposed OAR can further take the AGC signal responding into account except the maximum power output, in which the battery energy storage system is used to balance the power deviation between the AGC signals and the PV power outputs. Based on these two conflicted objects, the OAR is formulated as a bi-objective optimization. To address this problem, the efficient non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is designed to rapidly obtain an optimal Pareto front due to its high optimization efficiency. The decision-making method called VIKOR is employed to determine the best compromise solution from the obtained Pareto front. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed bi-objective optimization of OAR, three case studies with fixed, step-increasing, and step-decreasing AGC signals are carried out on a 10 × 10 total-cross-tied PV arrays under partial shading conditions.

The objective of this study is to develop and assess a gradient-based algorithm that efficiently traverses the Pareto front for multi-objective problems. We use high-fidelity, computationally intensive simulation tools (for eg: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element (FE) structural analysis) for function and gradient evaluations. The use of evolutionary algorithms with these high-fidelity simulation tools results in prohibitive computational costs. Hence, in this study we use an alternate gradient-based approach. We first outline an algorithm that can be proven to recover Pareto fronts. The performance of this algorithm is then tested on three academic problems: a convex front with uniform spacing of Pareto points, a convex front with non-uniform spacing and a concave front. The algorithm is shown to be able to retrieve the Pareto front in all three cases hence overcoming a common deficiency in gradient-based methods that use the idea of scalarization. Then the algorithm is applied to a practical problem in concurrent design for aerodynamic and structural performance of an axial turbine blade. For this problem, with 5 design variables, and for 10 points to approximate the front, the computational cost of the gradient-based method was roughly the same as that of a method that builds the front from a sampling approach. However, as the sampling approach involves building a surrogate model to identify the Pareto front, there is the possibility that validation of this predicted front with CFD and FE analysis results in a different location of the “Pareto” points. This can be avoided with the gradient-based method. Additionally, as the number of design variables increases and/or the number of required points on the Pareto front is reduced, the computational cost favors the gradient-based approach.

The joint trajectory of the robot needs to be computed in an optimal manner for proper torch orientation, smooth travel of the robot along the trajectory path. This can be achieved by limiting the travel time, kinematic and dynamic variations of the robot joints like the jerks, and torque induced in the joints in the travel of the robot. As the objectives of total travel time and joint jerk and torque rate are contradictory functions, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) approach has been used to obtain the pareto front consisting of optimal solutions. The fuzzy membership function has been used to obtain the optimal solution from the pareto front with best trade-off between objectives for further optimal trajectory generation. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that the proposed approach can be effectively used for optimal trajectory planning of Kawasaki RS06L industrial manipulator with minimal jerk, torque rate, and total travel time for smooth travel of robot with higher positional accuracy.

Abstract This paper develops a multi-objective optimization method for the cure of thick composite laminates. The purpose is to minimize the cure time and maximum temperature overshoot in the cure process by designing the cure temperature profile. This method combines the finite element based thermo-chemical coupled cure simulation with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). In order to investigate the influence of the number of dwells on the optimization result, four-dwell and two-dwell temperature profiles are selected for the design variables. The optimization method obtains successfully the Pareto optimal front of the multi-objective problem in thick and ultra-thick laminates. The result shows that the cure time and maximum temperature overshoot are both reduced significantly. The optimization result further illustrates that the four-dwell cure profile is more e ective than the two-dwell, especially for the ultra-thick laminates. Through the optimization of the four-dwell profile, the cure time is reduced by 51.0% (thick case) and 30.3% (ultra-thick case) and the maximum temperature overshoot is reduced by 66.9% (thick case) and 73.1% (ultra-thick case) compared with the recommended cure profile. In addition, Self-organizing map (SOM) is employed to visualize the relationships between the design variables with respect to the optimization result.
