Given school librarians promote reading and assist students in the self-selection of texts, this case study examines youth information-seeking practices, specifically book selection, within the context of a genrefied fiction collection. It examines how sixth grade students interacted with the collection along with their teachers’ perceptions of the collection’s recent genrefication. Data includes observation and video recording of 16 sixth grade students’ browsing activity during four checkout times, interviews with eight students, and survey responses from eight classroom teachers. Findings include that students used prior knowledge of genre for beginning book selection, preferred browsing with a peer and were more likely to leave with a book when they did, and tended to browse across genres even when coming to the library with a particular genre in mind. Classroom teachers viewed genrefication as a means for supporting students as readers, and appreciated that the library’s organization reinforced their curricular goals around teaching the concept of genre.

Digital reading environments are redefining the relationship between reader, text, activity, and sociocultural context. This chapter explores the nature of engagement, collaboration, and reader/writer response, as sixth-grade students from Ireland and the United States read and responded to electronic books within the context of an online global literature circle. In response to the readings, students composed digital thinkmarks, which served as springboards for subsequent written asynchronous message board discussions. Findings from this qualitative case study suggest that peer collaboration in an online literature discussion forum enabled the construction of social identity, community building, and a sociocultural situated response and engendered immersion in, involvement with, and interpretation of texts.

AbstractIn the present research work tries to account for the bond between the phenomenon of parenting and schooling difficulties than 10 sixth grade students of a public elementary school in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico. Abstract In this case study, we present opportunities science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education provided to a sixth-grade class. We collected observational and interview data in a language arts and a science class over 1 year. We used the liberation social psychology (LSP) framework to understand students’ discourses and discussions as they drew from science, engineering activities, and language arts ideas. Further, LSP allowed us to explore students’ engagement in critical reflection of social, racial, and other discrimination. The data analysis showed that STEAM education promoted the integration of science ideas, engineering design, social and critical consciousness. We found STEAM education supported discourses of critical reflection, racism, and social discrimination in class. Finally, we argue that STEAM education in Asia-Pacific and Global South countries has to be about critical consciousness, social change, and liberation of underrepresented groups and immigrants for more inclusive, sociopolitically conscious, and democratic STEAM education experiences.

To address childhood obesity, several states and local school districts across the United States have adopted body mass index (BMI) measurement initiatives. This descriptive case study explored psychosocial, environmental, and behavioral factors among parents of sixth-grade students who received BMI Health Letters (BMIHLs) in one Florida County. A nonexperimental postintervention design was employed to gather quantitative data via self-report Likert-type questionnaire. Participants were parents/guardians of sixth-grade students attending one Hillsborough County public middle school ( n = 76). Results indicate three main findings: (a) most parents in this study (67.4%) who discussed the BMIHL with their child reported their child as “very” or “somewhat” uncomfortable with the discussion; (b) some parents of normal weight (NW) children responded by taking their child to a medical professional to control their weight; and (c) more parents of at risk of overweight/overweight (AR/OW) children (vs. NW) reported greater concern about their child’s weight, using food restriction and physical activity to control their child’s weight, and giving negative weight-related comments/behaviors. This case study illustrates the importance of adapting and tailoring state mandated BMIHLs for parents based on child’s BMI status.

The goal of this study was to examine teacher, students and parents’ perceptions of a quidditch-muggle Sport Education season at a primary school. Fifty-two sixth-grade students from one primary school participated in the study. A case study research design was followed. One Physical Education specialist with expertise in the Sport Education Model agreed to participate and conducted a season based on the quidditch-muggle sport (17 sessions; 60 minutes/each, two days/week). Finally, forty-five parents, 86.52% of the total sample, agreed to provide their insights on their children’s Harry Potter experience. Several instruments were used to collect qualitative data: teacher’s diary, students’ open-ended question, parents’ open-ended question and students’ discussion groups. From the analysis of all data obtained, four positive categories emerged: enjoyment, novelty, learning and self-construction and one negative: competitiveness. Teacher, students and parents highlighted the usefulness of the SEM despite of the overemphasis on the competition.

This case study examined the effect of mnemonic strategies on improving sixth grade students' English vocabulary building. This study examined into students' response and their point of view toward using mnemonic strategies in teaching English vocabularies. A chick list was built based on experts' notes and English language teachers' observations in Mafraq educational directorate, Jordan, during 2019-2020 the first academic semester and vocabulary lessons were conducted using mnemonic strategies depending on the curricula to examine the validity and reliability of the research tool. Data from the teacher's observation was analyzed and the results showed the highest mean range was stated as ''Students make a mental map for a familiar place in their minds'' with mean range (20). And the lowest mean range was stated as '' Students decode words by numbers throughout giving each consonant sound a number'' with mean range (5). Based on the results of the study the researcher recommends using mnemonic strategies to improve students' English vocabulary building.
