Social media has been identified as a platform for student entrepreneurs to sell products and services, and to interact and connect with customers. However, the factors contributing to the adoption of social media as a platform among student entrepreneurs in Malaysia have not been established. This article aims to identify factors affecting the adoption of social media as a business platform among student entrepreneurs in Malaysia. This study employed a cross-sectional design and quantitative data was collected from 300 selected student entrepreneurs listed in the ‘entrepreneurship centres’ in all public universities in Peninsular Malaysia. Findings suggest that performance expectancy, perceived trust, perceived enjoyment and perceived risk have a significant positive effect on the adoption of social media. It is noted that there is a significant positive moderating effect of social influence between the relationship of facilitating conditions and the adoption of social media. Student entrepreneurs adopt social media as a business platform if they believe it improves their performance. Risk and trust are the most important factors influencing the adoption of social media as a business platform. Based on the findings, government agencies should promote social media as a business platform by instilling trust in the system with the hope that it will positively affect students’ entrepreneurial activities using social media as a business platform.

Purpose While it is perceived that adoption reflects acceptance, the purpose of this paper is to argue that individual usage is critical and cannot be guaranteed by mere adoption. This study, therefore, focuses on the factors (i.e. performance expectancy, perceived trust, perceived risk, facilitating condition, and perceived enjoyment) contributing to the adoption and ultimately usage of social media as a business platform among student entrepreneurs in Malaysia under the premise of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). Design/methodology/approach This study adopts a cross-sectional design and quantitative data are collected from 300 selected respondents listed as student entrepreneurs in the entrepreneurship centers of all public universities within Peninsular Malaysia. Findings Performance expectancy, perceived risk, perceived trust, and perceived enjoyment have a significant effect on the adoption of social media leading to its usage as a business platform. Findings also report a significant mediating effect of adoption of social media on the relationship between performance expectancy, perceived trust, perceived risk, and perceived enjoyment with the depth of social media usage. Research limitations/implications In order to promote entrepreneurial activities among student entrepreneurs using social media as a business platform, programs and policies should focus on improving cyber security and value-added services. Originality/value This study puts forward and tests the original UTAUT model to assess the adoption and depth of social media usage as a business platform among young student entrepreneurs in Peninsular Malaysia, which provides a foundation for the design and implementation of programs and policies that promote entrepreneurial activities using social media among student entrepreneurs in Malaysia.

Purpose This study aims to identify factors affecting tourists’ intention of using travel apps installed in their smartphones. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire was developed largely based on the available scales in the published literature. A total of 389 participants responded to the survey, out of which 343 valid responses were obtained for statistical analysis. Findings Significant predictors of smartphone app usage intention included performance expectancy, social influence, price saving, perceived risk, perceived trust and prior usage habits. Usage behavior was largely mediated by usage intention, except in the case of habits. Contrary to the expectation, factors such as hedonistic motivation, facilitating conditions or effort expectancy did not impact usage intention or behavior. Practical implications The study gives app developers vital cues on tourist expectations from the apps. Oftentimes, developers tend to focus entirely on the material utility of their apps, neglecting every other factor influencing use. One particular implication is that despite tourism being a hedonistic activity, travel app usage behavior is not a hedonistic activity. Originality/value This is one of the few studies to examine adoption of smartphone travel apps in an emerging economy context by using extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology framework with additional constructs.

Patients in health services have different behaviors in deciding to take advantage of health services. Patients used various considerations to make decisions based on the health products or services for re-treatment. The study aimed to analyze the factors that influence the patient's decision in using health services for re-treatment. This research was quantitative with cross-sectional design and conducted at Tanjung Pura Regional Hospital. The population was 3.946 people, and the sample were 247 respondents taken by using purposive sampling. Data analysis was univariate and bivariate using chi-square and multivariate using multiple logistic regression at the 95% confidence level (a= .05). The results showed that the factors that influenced the patient's decision to use health services for re-treatment at the Tanjung Pura Regional Hospital were the service quality of doctors / nurses (p= .000), distance (p=.049), facilities (p=0.000), and service speed (p = .000). The factors that did not influence we age (p=.461). gender (p=.895), education (p=.371), occupation (p=.593). The most dominant factor influencing is facilities with Exp (B)/OR =14.477, meaning that respondents who stated that the hospital facilities were good, had the opportunity to use health services for re-treatment by 14.4 times higher the respondents who stated that the hospital facilities were not good. It is suggested to Tanjung Pura Regional Hospital to propose and allocate a budget for improving hospital facilities that are still lacking and adding new service facilities so that it can increase public confidence for repeat treatment

Information flows can affect people’s apprehension of the pan- demic and related behaviors. The aim is to explore how people access and assess COVID-19 information and whether sociodemographic factors are associated with these processes. Quantitative data from 928 persons from 29 countries who participated in an international web-based survey was ana- lyzed with descriptive and analytic statistics. Television, newspapers and social media were common sources to search for certain types of COVID-19 information. Age, educational level, employment status and sex were as- sociated with differences in terms of reported sources, types, and reliability assessments of retrieved information. Sex and education levels were associ- ated with differences pertaining to main sources and kinds of information searched. Younger respondents reported more frequent uses of social media than older respondents. Older respondents assessed information from tra- ditional media as more reliable information from social media. The current results show trends about where and how information is accessed and assessed during the pandemic. Some associations with sociodemographic factors were found, but the study’s cross-sectional design prevents causal inferences. Further research on consumption patterns of COVID-19 infor- mation and its effects on consumers is motivated, as this may in turn affect people’s attitudes and behavior relating to the pandemic.

Being an interactive process, the success of risk communication needs to ensure the individuals’ right to know and influence their attitudes and perceptions of risk. Ubiquitous social media have expanded risk communication channels and innovated ways of risk communication. At the same time, uncertainty also arises with the diversity and variety of social media. Taking the rainstorm disaster in China as an example, this study focuses on factors affecting the individuals’ continuance intention of information seeking on Weibo (a social media platform similar to Twitter). Based on 377 valid respondents, this study applied an extended expectation–confirmation model (ECM), from which the results of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) suggested that continuance intention is positively influenced by factors including effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and satisfaction. Among them, satisfaction contributes the most, which helps maintain a balance between performance expectancy and continuance intention. Taking the individuals’ continuance intention to seek information on Weibo as the clue, this research provides government agencies with practical advice on how to use social media for more efficient risk communication during disasters and establish emergency preplans to respond to natural disasters.
