An experimental study on the cryogenic face seal at different inlet pressures

An experimental test system for cryogenic high-speed hydrodynamic non-contact mechanical seals is developed. Based on this system, the performances of seals under different working conditions are studied in detail in this paper. With the experimental results, the main performances of the seals (such as inlet and outlet temperatures, separated speed, face temperature, friction force, friction coefficient, leakage rate) are obtained, and the relationships of the performances with the inlet fluid pressure, the closing force and the rotational speed are discussed. The results show that the difference between the outlet and inlet temperatures decreases with increasing inlet fluid pressure. As the speed increases, the friction force varies little and remains at a constant value. The friction coefficient of the seal is approximately 0.12 and basically does not change with the speed. The leakage rate is also maintained at approximately 190 g/s. With the increase in the closing force, the friction at the seal’s face does not change greatly, which indicates that the friction at the face is always in a stable state with the seal’s closing force.

Abstract A variable pressure damper (VPD) is used here to adjusted the friction force on the valve spring to investigate the relation between the friction force and the valve bouncing phenomenon. The friction force on the valve spring is found experimentally, and the corresponding friction coefficient is also determined. Dynamic valve displacements at different speeds with different friction forces are calibrated. Bouncing and floating of the valve are observed when the camshaft reaches high speed. From the measured valve displacement, the VPD is shown to have significant improvement in reducing valve bouncing distance and eliminating floating. However, experimental results indicate that the valve bouncing can not be eliminated completely when the camshaft speed is at 2985 rpm.

A hard film coat can improve a tool's performance. In this study, the frictional properties of an uncoated tool and a coated tool with TiN were measured against that of SCM440 (42 CrMo 4) steel. The results showed there was no significant difference between the friction coefficient of the high-speed steel tool and the tool coated with TiN but the friction coefficient of uncoated tool was slightly lower than that of the steel. In the second part of the study, coats of TiN , TiC , CrN , and TiAlN were deposited on high-speed steel and the wear characteristics were determined with a pin-on-disk wear examination. The differences in the friction coefficients were attributed to the difference in the wear of the slipping material. There were large differences in the adhesion characteristics on the surface of the slipping material. The author suggest that these differences influence the characteristics of the cutting tool.

ABSTRACTNearly impermeable host rocks have been recognized as favorable media for many kinds of underground utilization such as radioactive nuclear waste disposal, storage of oil and LP gas, and CAES. To properly evaluate the ability of a geologic medium to retard transmission of fluids, it is necessary to accurately measure its hydraulic properties, most notably the permeability and specific storage. This paper presents a new flow pump permeability test system capable of testing low-permeability rocks under high confining and high pore pressure conditions, which simulate ground pressures at large depths. The new system was used to test the Inada Granite from Japan. The results of present study show that: 1) both permeability and specific storage of the rock are dependent not only on the confining pressure but also on the pore pressure. They decrease with the increment of the effective confining pressure, i.e., the difference between confining and pore pressures; 2) the permeability and specific storage of Inada Granite range from 10−11 to 10−12 cm/s and 10−6 to 10−7 1/cm, respectively. The flow pump technique with its rigorous theoretical analysis can be used to effectively obtain such low permeabilities within several tens of hours; 3) the storage capacity of flow pump system itself decreases with the increment of fluid pressure within the permeating system.

A novel forming method “micro hydromechanical deep drawing (MHDD)” is focused to improve the tribological property and forming limit. In this study, a theoretical model for MHDD is developed to investigate the size effect on deformation behavior in micro hydromechanical deep drawing. The effects of fluid pressure, the difference of friction coefficients at inner pockets and outer pockets are considered in the investigation on the size effect of tribological property. The friction force decreases as the scale factor decreases in MHDD process. It is also found that the tribological property in micro scale can be improved by applying the fluid pressure. The forming limit decreases as the relative punch diameter increases. However, it is clarified that the forming limit can be improved by decreasing the friction force in MHDD.

The friction units of modern power turbines require the use of special materials with a stable and low coefficient of friction in extreme conditions. The most successfully used for these purposes are antifriction carbon-graphite materials, in particular isotropic pyrolytic carbon. It is established that isotropic pyrolytic carbon has a lower friction coefficient and wear rate than ATG-S antifriction graphite. Based on the analysis of the microstructure and fractograms of wear traces, it was suggested that the difference in the tribological behavior of materials is caused by various mechanisms of material destruction. It is also shown that isotropic pyrolytic carbon tends to decrease the wear rate and friction coefficient with increasing density. Ill. 7. Ref. 10. Tab. 1.

Time varying frictional force and torque are one of the main exciting sources of vibration in helical gears. This paper presents an approach to determine the friction force and torque in involute helical gears considering nonuniform load distribution along contact lines. An analytical load distribution model is employed and extended to obtain the load per unit of length along contact lines. Friction force and torque models under nonuniform assumption are derived. Comparisons of the determined friction force and torque with the results from uniform assumption are made. In addition, the differences between constant friction coefficient and varying coefficient are revealed. Moreover, two typical design cases of helical gears are studied. Results show that the fluctuations of friction force and torque under uniform assumption are more significant than those under nonuniform assumption in sample I for a single tooth, but less significant for the sum of those of the three teeth, while in sample II, the fluctuations under uniform assumption are less significant than those under nonuniform assumption. The friction coefficient induced difference is negligible compared with the difference induced by load distribution assumptions.

In the high speed precision machine tools, the thermal deformation of spindle had an important influence in machining accuracy. The data of thermal deformation of spindle was got through measuring test rod in the experiment. However, the system error existing of test rod in running and heat imported led to the difference between the measured values and the actual values. The paper has discussed the deformation of test rod caused by centrifugal force in high speed, Non-uniform thermal field in a stable state, and gravity and the variational elastic modulus. Through analyzing those factors, the main ones and neglectable ones could be confirmed, which laid the theoretical foundation in order to eliminate the interference factors in the measurement values.

High-speed railway "Moscow-Kazan" by the draft crosses the Volga (Kuibyshev reservoir) in Chuvashia region 500 m below the village of New Kushnikovo. The crossing plot is a right-bank landslide slope with a stepped surface. Its height is 80 m; the slope steepness -15-16o. The authors should assess the risk of landslides and recommend anti-landslide measures to ensure the safety of the future bridge. For this landslide factors have been analyzed, slope stability assessment has been performed and recommendations have been suggested. The role of the following factors have been analyzed: 1) hydrologic - erosion and abrasion reservoir and runoff role; 2) lithologyc (the presence of Urzhum and Northern Dvina horizons of plastically deformable rocks, displacement areas); 3) hydrogeological (the role of perched, ground and interstratal water); 4) geomorphological (presence of the elemental composition of sliding systems and their structure in the relief); 5) exogeodynamic (cycles and stages of landslide systems development, mechanisms and relationship between landslide tiers of different generations and blocks contained in tiers). As a result 6-7 computational models at each of the three engineering-geological sections were made. The stability was evaluated by the method “of the leaning slope”. It is proved that the slope is in a very stable state and requires the following measures: 1) unloading (truncation) of active heads blocks of landslide tiers) and the edge of the plateau, 2) regulation of the surface and groundwater flow, 3) concrete dam, if necessary.

Railway noise is calculated to predict the impact of new or reconstructed railway tracks on nearby residential areas. The results are used to prepare adequate counter- measures, and the calculation results are directly related to the cost of the action plans. The calculated values were used to produce noise maps for each area of inter- est. The Schall 03 2012 is one of the most frequently used methods for the production of noise maps. The latest version was released in 2012 and uses various input para- meters associated with the latest rail vehicles and track systems in Germany. This version has not been sufficiently used in South Korea, and there is a lack of standard guidelines and a precise manual for Korean railway systems. Thus, it is not clear what input parameters will match specific local cases. This study investigates the modeling procedure for Korean railway systems and the differences between calcu- lated railway sound levels and measured values obtained using the Schall 03 2012 model. Depending on the location of sound receivers, the difference between the cal- culated and measured values was within approximately 4 dB for various train types. In the case of high-speed trains, the value was approximately 7 dB. A noise-reducing measure was also modeled. The noise reduction effect of a low-height noise barrier system was predicted and evaluated for operating railway sites within the frame- work of a national research project in Korea. The comparison of calculated and measured values showed differences within 2.5 dB.

A study conducted on the high-speed diesel engine (bore/stroke: 79.5/95.5 mm; 66 kW) running with microalgae oil (MAO100) and diesel fuel (D100) showed that, based on Wibe parameters (m and φz), the difference in numerical values of combustion characteristics was ~10% and, in turn, resulted in close energy efficiency indicators (ηi) for both fuels and the possibility to enhance the NOx-smoke opacity trade-off. A comparative analysis by mathematical modeling of energy and traction characteristics for the universal multi-purpose diesel engine CAT 3512B HB-SC (1200 kW, 1800 min−1) confirmed the earlier assumption: at the regimes of external speed characteristics, the difference in Pme and ηi for MAO100 and D100 did not exceeded 0.7–2.0% and 2–4%, respectively. With the refinement and development of the interim concept, the model led to the prognostic evaluation of the suitability of MAO100 as fuel for the FPT Industrial Cursor 13 engine (353 kW, 6-cylinders, common-rail) family. For the selected value of the indicated efficiency ηi = 0.48–0.49, two different combinations of φz and m parameters (φz = 60–70 degCA, m = 0.5 and φz = 60 degCA, m = 1) may be practically realized to achieve the desirable level of maximum combustion pressure Pmax = 130–150 bar (at α~2.0). When switching from diesel to MAO100, it is expected that the ηi will drop by 2–3%, however, an existing reserve in Pmax that comprises 5–7% will open up room for further optimization of energy efficiency and emission indicators.
