Background and objective: Presentations of MS in fictional literature have not been previously researched. This paper surveys and analyses these portrayals of the disease for the first time. Material and methods: Relevant works in English and German were identified by means of keyword searches in online public access catalogues and search engines as well as old-fashioned research. The neurological and literary evaluation of these 7000 pages of text combines qualitative and quantitative methods. Results: Between 1954 and 2012 at least 55 literary works appeared with an MS motif (35 novels, 18 poems, one novella and one drama). The authors were predominantly female and a third of them suffered from the disease. Patients in the novels largely reflect real epidemiology as regards symptoms and disease progression, while diagnostic and therapeutic options play a secondary role. From a literary point of view, ‘entwicklungsromane’, ‘relationship novels’ and ‘young adult books’ can be discerned. MS is often portrayed in metaphoric language as the enemy: a demon, an animalistic being, prison or an abyss. Conclusion: The MS motif evidences a medicalization of the literature as well as a literary portrayal of anthropological experiences. Well-written novels can contribute to the de-stigmatization of MS and impart basic medical knowledge.

This study uses the case study of journalists to explore the socio-cognitive nature of interpersonal trust in growingly deceptive ecosystems. Journalists are ideal test subjects to explore these issues as professional trust allocators, who receive immediate feedback on right and wrong trust decisions. The study differentiates, for the first time, between source and message credibility evaluations, based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings show that journalists can distinguish source and message credibility. However, in practice they rely on source evaluations as an “autopilot” default mode, shifting gears to observations of source and message credibility in epistemically complex cases. The proportion between both is close to Pareto distribution. This extreme division challenges both inductive and mixed inference theories of epistemic trust and suggests revisiting the “typification” doctrine of newswork. Data partially support the hegemony and “epistemic injustice” theory, showing that traditional credibility criteria might trigger the exclusion of nontraditional voices.

The feeling of empathy is as old as the humankind. Empathy is an attempt to perceive the emotions and to understand the thoughts of other individuals and discern their point of view. Due to such aspects, empathy presents “a focus on other individuals”. In general terms, empathy was defined as “adopting a sensitive attitude towards correctly understanding the emotions and thoughts of another individual, encountering any event, through placing oneself in the place of that individual during the process of communication.”The present study was intended to determine the effects of the communication and immigration subjects in the 7th grade social studies course on the empathy skills of students through employing the didactic approach, which is one of the techniques for empathy development.Concurrent nested (embedded) design, a mixed research method, was employed in the present study. Mixed-method research is defined as the approach through which the researcher draws conclusions by using the advantage of integrating qualitative and quantitative methods, approaches and concepts in a study or consecutive studies with the aim to understand diverse research models. The quantitative data in the present study were obtained via the “Index of Empathy for Children and Adolescents”, whereas the qualitative data were collected through interview forms.Almost all students emphasized the significance of empathy and understanding the feelings of the migrants for understanding the causes and consequences of immigration throughout the activities related to immigration.

Teacher attrition has become a challenge in many educational systems worldwide. Many studies have focused onteachers' perspectives, while attempting to identify the factors that motivated teachers' decision to leave theprofession. The present study aimed to explore teacher attrition from the point of view of school leaders - principalsand inspectors. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, the results indicate that school and district leadersperceived teacher attrition via two-dimensional structure, including explicit and implicit dimensions. The explicitdimension refers to the act of leaving. The participants indicated that the main reasons that motivate teachers'decision to leave the profession are related to the stressful working environment and poor job conditions. Theimplicit dimension presents a hidden attrition. Based on cost-benefit theory the study highlights the complexstructure of teacher attrition.

With the development of Taiwan’s economy and increasing revenues of the people, people are increasingly interested in tourism and leisure lifestyles. Local governments in Taiwan develop their own unique shopping areas based on the considerations of their own characteristics. Woodcarving works display commercial, artistic, practical, aesthetical, and other features. From the heyday of export and domestic sales, the global downturn, and the establishment of the woodcarving museum, the industry experienced changes like the business cycle. During this period of thriving export, every household in Sanyi was creating wood carving products day and night. Due to the flourishing export of the wood carving industry of Sanyi, outside wood carvers came to Sanyi and introduced new artistic styles, resulting in different creative concepts of wood carving works. The majority of residents in Sanyi are Hakka, and over 50% of the people are engaging in the woodcarving industry. Presently, due to time, space, external, and internal factors, the woodcarving industry of Sanyi has gradually passed the heyday of export. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, this study analyzed the status and process of the development of the Sanyi woodcarving cultural and creative industry, as well as the change of marketing models. We explored whether emotional marketing methods can arouse the perception of consumption situations, and individual intrinsic emotions and feelings, while promoting proactive participation and purchase of woodcarving products to enrich the life of consumers. Moreover, this study discussed the depth and width of the impact on existing consumers and potential community members. By analyzing the woodcarving industry in Sanyi, Miaoli, as based on a conversion from the past, as well as current development and future vision, this study proposed marketing strategy suggestions as reference for the woodcarving industry.

ABSTRACTThis paper surveys and illustrates ten years of research done on sociophonological variation in Viennese German from a methodological point of view. It shows how variants of the same word form are collected and analyzed and how two types of rules are differentiated: (1) phonostylistic (optional) phonological rules of the fast/casual and formal hyperarticulate speech, both of Standard Austrian German and Viennese German Dialect; and (2) bidirectional input switch rules between these two strata. Psycholinguistic lab experiments are summarized, which vouch for the psychological reality of sociolinguistic concepts used. A theory of sociopsychological speech situations is described as well as the application of quantitative and qualitative sociolinguistic methods used. A major illustration of our approach is taken from the sociolinguistic study of defendants at court. The conclusion summarizes major claims. The purpose of this study was to examine airline pilots’ own formulation of desirable non-technical skills. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to identify the pilot community's own perception of desirable personal attitudes. Group interviews formed the basis for developing statements. A sample consisting of 174 pilots were questioned on their perception of desirable attitudes. The major finding indicated clusters of attitudes pilots perceived as desirable. The attitudes pilots called attention to were intimately linked to the concept of airmanship. Factor analysis revealed at least four factors in pilots’ conception of desired personal attitudes of an airman: “knowledge”, ‘flying skills’, ‘CRM’, and ‘self-awareness’.

In evangelical communities, divorce is prohibited and a pastor is seen as a model, a spiritual guide and, above all, a guarantor of the Christian faith and morality. From this point of view, the breakdown of the marriage bond of a pastor with his wife undermines the cohesion and stability of the communities under his tutelage. This is because divorce is considered in Christian circles as a transgressive and anomic act. This article is a comprehensive approach of the divorce of pastors. It also shows its explanatory factors using a case study of two localities, the Assemblies of God Church and the International Ministry of the Revelation of Yopougon. The study was carried out using a socio-anthropological approach combined with both qualitative and quantitative methods. Based on the result of this study, the divorce of pastors is explained by several factors. The most essential include: the tensions and the recurring disputes in the couple; the continued infidelity of the spouses; the lack of forgiveness and reciprocal acceptance of spouses in case of error; the subtle flight of one of the spouses of the household, and so on. Although they are human guides and shepherds, pastors who have succumbed to these situations have destroyed the sacred bond of their marriage. These kinds of behavior of the evangelical guides have led to the regression of the social and political functioning of the Christian communities. Divorce, however, has become a symbolic act of destruction of socio-religious bonds while tarnishing the image of the evangelical world.
