Parents play a central role in the preparation of their child for hospitalisation and surgery. This research examined the parental perspective on educating their child for an elective admission to hospital for surgery. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design and sampled eight parents from a private hospital in Dublin, Ireland, prior to their child’s discharge, after ear, nose and throat surgery. A thematic analysis revealed four themes: how parents educate themselves about surgery and hospital, factors influencing parent’s decisions on the quantity of information to share, sources of education about hospitalisation and aspects of hospitalisation not discussed by parents. Findings indicated that although the internet was used as a general source of information, parents relied more on information provided by the hospital. Parents used their child’s age, individual needs and level of autonomy to determine what information to communicate. Specific areas that parents found difficult to communicate included pain and fasting. This research highlights the need for hospitals to invest and support the delivery of parental education for children prior to surgery. Clarification of the children’s nurses’ role in the development, implementation and evaluation of education programmes that support education delivery in the home by parents is also warranted.

AbstractNEUROLEPTANALGESIA is described for its use in the management of otolaryngologic cases undergoing elective surgery. 100 cases have been reviewed extensively. The advantages and possible problems are outlined. It seems to be a highly satisfactory alternative to conventional general anesthetic techniques for most ear, nose and throat procedures and operations, where quiescence rather than anesthesia is required. The absence of direct myocardial depression and a marked decrease in operative and post-operative morbidity constitute the principal advantages.

Background: Cost analysis is a management tool that helps the researchers to identify and manage high costs. The purpose of the present study was to calculate the cost of day bed and patient bed in the ear, nose, and throat departments of a teaching hospital and a private hospital in Yazd City, Iran. Methods: The present descriptive, analytical, and retrospective study was conducted in the ear, nose, and throat departments of a teaching hospital and a private hospital in Yazd in 2016. Data were collected by studying the relevant documents and checklists. Data were analyzed using Excel software. Results: The costs of day bed occupancy were calculated as 7286715 rials and 2386715 rials in the ear, nose, and throat departments of the private and educational hospitals, respectively. The cost of a private hospital day bed was much higher than that of a training hospital considering the tariff approved in 2016. Income per patient per day was obtained as 2204643 rials in educational hospital and 1500130 rials in the private hospital. The income per patient per day was higher in the teaching hospital than the private hospital. Conclusion: Hospitals should have a precise financial system in order to manage the day bed pricing based on the final costs and have realistic day bed costs. Given the high cost of staffing, hospitals should pay close attention to control these costs. Hospitals also need to adopt appropriate processes to consume the consumables logically and reduce their costs.

Objective The overall aim of the study was to investigate and assess the feasibility of improving the timeliness of public hospital care through a New South Wales (NSW)-wide public–private hospital partnership. Methods The study reviewed the academic and professional grey literature, and undertook exploratory analyses of secondary data acquired from two national health data repositories informing in-patient access and utilisation across NSW public and private hospitals. Results In 2014–15, the NSW public hospital system was unable to deliver care within the medically recommended time frame for over 27 400 people who were awaiting elective surgery. Available information indicates that the annual commissioning of 15% of public in-patient rehabilitation bed days to the private hospital system would potentially free up enough capacity in the NSW public hospital system to enable elective surgery for all public patients within recommended time frames. Conclusions The findings of the study justify a strategic whole-of-health system approach to reducing public patient wait times in NSW and highlight the need for research efforts aimed at securing a better understanding of available hospital capacity across the public and private hospital systems, and identifying and testing workable models that improve the timeliness of public hospital care. What is known about the topic? There are very few studies available to inform public–private hospital service partnerships and the opportunities available to improve timely health care access through such partnerships. What does this paper add? This paper has the potential to open and prompt timely discussion and debate, and generate further fundamental investigation, on public–private hospital service partnerships in Australia where opportunity is available to address elective surgery wait times in a reliable and effective manner. What are the implications for practitioners? The NSW Ministry of Health and its Local Health Districts have the potential to realise a key objective, namely to deliver the ‘right care, in the right place, at the right time’, through the core value of collaboration, using available infrastructure.

Coastal communities as open societies have historically known the tradition of literacy rather than inland communities. Openness has greatly influenced the teachings of Islam, which later developed into a Coastal Islam. Coastal Islam was born as a consequence of the birth of pesantren along the coast of Java. For pesantren, literacy culture is often interpreted as a routine activity of reading and writing that can not be separated from modern human lifestyle, especially in the world of education (school). In this millennial era, the culture of literacy is declining, along with the rapid use of social media as a new source of information. This study uses a cultural approach that attempts to describe the empirical realities of coastal communities, in the form of social movements, beliefs, social and cultural behaviors related to cultural literacy in pesantren of Demak district. To analyze the event by collecting data through observation, interview, and tracking documentation narrated in the form of qualitative-descriptive with descriptive-interpretative analysis. The results of research include; first Salafiyah-type pesantren view literacy culture is the same as reading al-Quran and tool books (Arabic) to understand the Qur'an and Sunnah. Both pesantrens of combination type, The culture of literacy understood the effort towards the culture of the Qur'an and Sunnah for the personal stabilization of the literate by equipping other readings for life skills. The three pesantren Ashriyah, literacy culture is understood as the refraction of reading and writing of the Qur'an and other literary readings, which are hierarchically started from the Kyai, Asatidz, senior to junior Santri, with collaborative, programmed, synergistic and continuous.
