Based on the correction factor of accuracy applied in ISO standard 3408-4:2006, this article proposed a modified method to calculate the effective ball number and basic static load rating of ball screws. Meanwhile, the basic static load rating of ball screws was obtained through a new measurement method presented in this article. The experimental results, agreeing well with the theoretical values calculated by the modified method, showed that there is a large discrepancy between the basic static load rating calculated by the traditional method and the measured result, which proves that the new modified method is valid. This study provides a more accurate method to obtain the basic static load of ball screws, which is significant for predicting the performance and service life of ball screws.

By analyzing the relations of the excess air ratio to heat loss due to exhaust gas, chemical incomplete combustion and combustibles in refuse, the traditional method for solving the optimal excess air ratio is improved. A correction factor is proposed for heat loss due to combustibles in refuse, making the solving method more accurate, which is of great importance for improving the combustion efficiency of the boiler.

A simple and accurate method of measuring relative displacements along a borehole using circular magnets as markers and reed switches as sensors has been developed and is now widely used. This note describes a new precise sensing system which is easily assembled and installed, together with a modified method of placing magnets. Details are given of the performance of the new system over a 2 year period for an investigation into the deformation properties of an heavily loaded week rock.

The present work aimed to compare the small, neutral and monoaromatic oxime, isatin-3-oxime (isatin-O), to the commercial ones, pralidoxime (2-PAM) and obidoxime, in a search for a new potential reactivator for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibited by the pesticide paraoxon (AChE/POX) as well as a novel potential scaffold for further synthetic modifications. The multicriteria decision methods (MCDM) allowed the identification of the best docking poses of those molecules inside AChE/POX for further molecular dynamic (MD) studies, while Ellman’s modified method enabled in vitro inhibition and reactivation assays. In corroboration with the theoretical studies, our experimental results showed that isatin-O have a reactivation potential capable of overcoming 2-PAM at the initial moments of the assay. Despite not achieving better results than obidoxime, this molecule is promising for being an active neutral oxime with capacity of crossing the blood–brain barrier (BBB), to reactivate AChE/POX inside the central and peripheral nervous systems. Moreover, the fact that isatin-O can also act as anticonvulsant makes this molecule a possible multipotent reactivator. Besides, the MCDM method showed to be an accurate method for the selection of the best docking poses generated in the docking studies.

In measurements of fast-changing flows, one of the key issues is knowledge of the anemometer frequency bandwidth. In such measurements, the measurement technique often used is hot-wire anemometry. The determination and optimization of the measurement bandwidth of the hot-wire system is very important for the quality of the measurements carried out. One of the methods used is square-wave or sine-wave electrical testing. The article proposes modification of this method, which involves applying an electrical test signal wirelessly directly to the sensor, using transformer inductive coupling. This modification may in some cases be beneficial and find application in selected metrological problems. The article describes the modified method and its example application.

The Basic Oxygen Furnace comprises a tiltable vessel supported by two trunnions in large roller bearings. To accommodate thermal expansion, the floating bearing is mounted on a deep curved beam which moves axially on two linear bearings. Under loads of 1 to 2 million pounds, the elastic deflection of this beam alters the static load capacity of the roller bearing. This paper describes a computer assisted analysis based on Castigliano’s First Theorem for determining the effective bearing capacity, and secondly for optimizing the beam design.

Dimensional and surface quality for plate production control is facing difficult engineering challenges. One of these challenges is that plates in large-scale mass production contain geometric uneven surfaces. There is a traditional measurement method used to assess the tile plate dimensions and surface quality based on standard specifications: ISO-10545-2: 1995, EOS-3168-2: 2007, and TIS 2398-2: 2008. A proposed measurement method of the dimensions and surface quality for ceramic oblong large-scale tile plate has been developed compared to the traditional method. The strategy of new method is based on CMM straightness measurement strategy instead of the centre point in the traditional method. Expanded uncertainties budgets in the measurements of each method have been estimated in detail. The capability of accurate estimations of real actual results for centre of curvature (CC), centre of edge (CE), warpage (W), and edge crack defects parameters has been achieved according to standards. Moreover, the obtained results not only showed better accurate new method but also improved the quality of plate products significantly.

The determination of flow rate and fluid resistance for membrane-type restrictors is modified in this paper, and it can be more accurate and confident from the measurements in experiments. Three coupled equations including Reynolds equation, membrane deformation equation of large axisymmetric deflection and flow rate equation have been used to establish the mathematical model of membrane-type restrictor and solved simultaneously. Several cases are simulated by the traditional method and the modified numerical method, and the simulation results are compared with experimental data for flow rates and fluid resistances. It has been found that the determination of the performance characteristics of membrane-type restrictors is significantly affected by the hypotheses of membrane deflection scales, the pressures distribution and the gap height between the sill and membrane. The numerical results of the modified method are much more approximated to the actual flow rate measured in Kang et al.’s work than those of the traditional formula, and the proposed method can increase the determination accuracy of the flow rate and restriction coefficient in the design of membrane-type restrictors distinctly.

AbstractThe airplane-borne conformal antenna attaches itself tightly with the airplane skin, so the conventional measurement method cannot determine the contribution of the airplane-borne conformal antenna to its radar cross section (RCS). This paper uses the 2D microwave imaging to isolate and extract the distribution of the reflectivity of the airplane-borne conformal antenna. It obtains the 2D spatial spectra of the conformal antenna through the wave spectral transform between the 2D spatial image and the 2D spatial spectrum. After the interpolation from the rectangular coordinate domain to the polar coordinate domain, the spectral domain data for the variation of the scatter of the conformal antenna with frequency and angle is obtained. The experimental results show that the measurement method proposed in this paper greatly enhances the airplane-borne conformal antenna’s RCS measurement accuracy, essentially eliminates the influences caused by the airplane skin and more accurately reveals the airplane-borne conformal antenna’s RCS scatter properties.
