Development of a wall jet model dedicated to 1D combustion modelling for CI engines

Diesel engines are becoming smaller as technology advances, which means that the fuel spray (or jet) interacts with the cylinder walls before combustion starts. Most fuel injection 1D models (especially for diesel fuel) do not consider this interaction. Therefore, a wall-jet sub-model was created on an Eulerian 1D diesel spray model. It was calibrated using data from the literature and validated with experimental data from a fuel spray impacting a plate in a constant volume combustion chamber. Results show that the spray moving along the wall has a higher mixing rate but less penetration as an equivalent free jet, therefore they show a similar volume. Spray-wall interaction creates a stagnation zone right before the impact with the wall, and friction of the jet with the wall is relatively low. All these phenomena are well captured by the wall-jet sub-model.

The undesirable deposits forming on the surfaces of various internal parts of reciprocating internal combustion engines and the systems operating in conjunction with them worsen during the operation of the engines and threaten their proper functioning. The deposits form as a normal result of the processes of fuel injection and creating and combusting the fuel–air mixture in engines. It was not investigated until the beginning of the 21st century, when extensive multi-directional research began not only to identify the causes of these deposits, the mechanisms behind their formation, and the factors leading to deposit growth, but also to determine the chemical composition of various groups of deposits. Such research became necessary because engines must comply with gradually tightening regulations on environmental protection, necessitating the introduction of increasingly complex engine designs and strategies for controlling the processes of precise and divided fuel injection into the combustion chambers and advanced algorithms for controlling the combustion processes according to the combustion system and the purpose of the engine. However, it became apparent that the co-functioning of the increasingly complex engine technologies and solutions, particularly of fuel injection systems, may be significantly disturbed by the deposits forming inside them. More and more complicated engine designs with tighter and tighter tolerances of the working parts necessitate the multi-directional testing of harmful deposits. An increasing number of factors affecting deposit formation are being identified, which leads to the development of increasingly complex classifications and subdivisions of deposits according to their type, composition, and form. At the same time, the search for lower emissions and greater engine efficiency is driving further mechanical changes in engines and vehicles. The higher temperatures and pressures connected with these changes are likely to impact the fuel being handled within the fuel and combustion systems. Such effects will inevitably cause the deposit chemistry and morphology to change. The size of the coke deposits produced may disturb the processes of fuel atomization, of filling the engine combustion chambers and swirling the charge, and in consequence may affect the efficiency of filling and the quality of the fuel–air mixture. These problems led to the development of a number of standardized and unstandardized methods for assessing the size of deposits. It was found that in the case of SI engines, the deposits that most endanger correct engine operation are those which are formed in the combustion chambers, on the inlet valves, inlet ducts, and fuel injector tips. The most common sign of deterioration caused by deposits is the loss over time of the performance, usability, and operational value which were originally declared by the manufacturer. In the case of CI engines, the most dangerous are coke (carbon) deposits formed on the external surfaces of the fuel injector nozzle tips and inside the injector nozzle orifices. In Europe, mandatory procedures for assessing the size of different coke deposits formed on different components in both SI and CI engines are being developed by the Coordinating European Council for the Development of Performance Tests for Transportation Fuels, Lubricants, and Other Fluids (CEC). The theoretical part of this publication reports the problems of the deposits produced in reciprocating internal combustion engines and their fuel systems. It discusses standard and non-standard engine test methods for both quantitative and qualitative assessment of deposits and presents the significance of the assessment methods which are currently used for the classification of deposits. The publication also presents the scope of application and the usefulness of methods for determining the threats posed to the functioning of an engine by various types of deposits and methods for identifying the causes of deposit formation, in particular those related to the composition of the fuels and lubricating oils used. The effects which fuel composition and the engine’s construction and operating parameters have on various engine deposits, the possible causes of deposit formation, and the importance of modern deposit control additives and high-technology solutions in counteracting this detrimental phenomenon are also all discussed. The experimental part presents the results of research carried out at the Oil and Gas Institute – National Research Institute concerning: • the incomparability of measurements of fuel performance obtained from various engine tests, • studies on the influence of various deposit control additives on the formation of harmful engine deposits during engine tests, • the influence of fuel treatments on the deposit formation processes in internal combustion engines (described qualitatively or quantitatively), • determination of the impact which various chemical compounds, serving as contaminants within the fuels, have on deposit formation in internal combustion engines and fuel injection systems, • determination of the impact that various chemical structures of the compounds within the fuels and biofuel blends have on deposit formation in internal combustion engines and fuel injection systems, • studies on the influence of bio-components contained in both petrol and diesel fuels on tendency for deposits to form in internal combustion engines, and • multidirectional studies on the impact of FAME degradation processes in biodiesel fuel blends on the formation of harmful engine deposits.

Abstract Spray analysis is used to characterize the fuel spray evolution and spray shape, which affects in-cylinder combustion and particulate emission characteristics of compression ignition (CI) engines. In this study, spray evolution of biodiesel blends and mineral diesel was captured using a high-speed charge coupled device (CCD) camera at different fuel injection pressures (FIPs) and ambient pressures (APs) in a constant volume spray chamber (CVSC). Results showed that spray parameters were significantly affected by FIP and AP. Higher FIPs resulted in longer fuel spray penetration length (Ls) and reduced spray cone angle (As). However, AP variation showed an exactly opposite trend of Ls and As. Increasing AP resulted in shorter Ls and increased As. Fuel properties also affected the spray characteristics, which slightly improved for lower biodiesel blends (B20: 20% v/v blend of biodiesel with mineral diesel) and then degraded for higher biodiesel blends (B40: 40% v/v blend of biodiesel with mineral diesel) with respect to baseline mineral diesel. The effects of these findings of fuel spray analysis were validated using engine experiments, which were performed in a single-cylinder research engine using identical test fuels and fuel injection parameters. Relatively superior combustion of B20-fueled engine and lower particulate emissions at higher FIPs showed good agreement with spray results.

Abstract Protection of the environment and counteracting global warming require finding alternative sources of energy. One of the methods of generating energy from environmentally friendly sources is increasing the share of gaseous fuels in the total energy balance. The use of these fuels in compression-ignition (CI) engines is difficult due to their relatively high autoignition temperature. One solution for using these fuels in CI engines is operating in a dualfuel mode, where the air and gas mixture is ignited with a liquid fuel dose. In this method, a series of relatively complex chemical processes occur in the engine's combustion chamber, related to the combustion of individual fuel fractions that interact with one another. Analysis of combustion of specific fuels in this type of fuel injection to the engine is difficult due to the fact that combustion of both fuel fractions takes place simultaneously. Simulation experiments can be used to analyse the impact of diesel fuel combustion on gaseous fuel combustion. In this paper, we discuss the results of simulation tests of combustion, based on the proprietary multiphase model of a dual-fuel engine. The results obtained from the simulation allow for analysis of the combustion process of individual fuels separately, which expands the knowledge obtained from experimental tests on the engine.

This article has two purposes: (a) to examine the relationship between intercultural power relations and the widespread practice of accent discrimination and (b) to underscore the ramifications of accent discrimination both for the individual and for global society as a whole. First, authors review social theory regarding language and group identity construction, and then go on to integrate more current studies linking accent bias to sociocultural variables. Authors discuss three examples of intercultural accent discrimination in order to illustrate how this link manifests itself in the broader context of international relations (i.e., how accent discrimination is generated in situations of unequal power) and, using a review of current research, assess the consequences of accent discrimination for the individual. Finally, the article highlights the impact that linguistic discrimination is having on linguistic diversity globally, partially using data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and partially by offering a potential context for interpreting the emergence of practices that seek to reduce or modify speaker accents.

Abstract. Multiculturalism has been criticized and rejected by an increasing number of politicians, and social psychological research has shown that it can lead to outgroup stereotyping, essentialist thinking, and negative attitudes. Interculturalism has been proposed as an alternative diversity ideology, but there is almost no systematic empirical evidence about the impact of interculturalism on the acceptance of migrants and minority groups. Using data from a survey experiment conducted in the Netherlands, we examined the situational effect of promoting interculturalism on acceptance. The results show that for liberals, but not for conservatives, interculturalism leads to more positive attitudes toward immigrant-origin groups and increased willingness to engage in contact, relative to multiculturalism.

The inflow of international remittances to Kerala has been increasing over the last three decades. It has increased the income of recipient households and enabled them to spend more on human capital investment. Using data from the Kerala Migration Survey-2010, this study analyses the impact of remittance receipts on the households’ healthcare expenditure and access to private healthcare in Kerala. This study employs an instrumental variable approach to account for the endogeneity of remittances receipts. The empirical results show that remittance income has a positive and significant impact on households’ healthcare expenditure and access to private healthcare services. After disaggregating the sample into different heterogeneous groups, this study found that remittances have a greater effect on lower-income households and Other Backward Class (OBC) households but not Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) households, which remain excluded from reaping the benefit of international migration and remittances.

Little is known about the relationship between social comparison orientation and mental health, especially in the psychological capital context. We proposed a theoretical model to examine the impact of ability- and opinion-based social comparison orientation on mental health using data from 304 undergraduates. We also examined the mediating effect of the four psychological capital components of hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism in the relationship between social comparison orientation and mental health. Results show that an ability (vs. opinion) social comparison orientation was negatively (vs. positively) related to the psychological capital components. Further, the resilience and optimism components of psychological capital fully mediated the social comparison orientation–mental health relationship. Our findings indicate that psychological capital should be considered in the promotion of mental health, and that the two social comparison orientation types have opposite effects on psychological capital.

Introduction: Previous studies have found an increase in the incidence rate of depression between 2007 – 2013 in Portugal, with a positive correlation with the unemployment rate, namely, in men. So, it was hypothesized that this increase is related with the situation of economic crisis. This study aimed to investigate if the correlation between unemployment rates and the incidence of depression is maintained in the post-crisis period of economic recovery in Portugal (2016 – 2018).Material and Methods: An ecological study was carried out, using data from the General Practitioners Sentinel Network concerning depression incidence (first episodes and relapses) and data from the National Statistics Institute on unemployment rates in the Portuguese population. The correlation coefficient was estimated using linear regression and the results were disaggregated by sex.Results: Between 2016 and 2018, there was a consistent decrease in the incidence of depression in both sexes. During the 1995 – 2018 period, a positive correlation was observed between unemployment and depression, with a coefficient of 0.833 (p = 0.005) in males and of 0.742 (p = 0.022) in females.Discussion: The reduction in the incidence of depression in both sexes observed between 2016 – 2018 corroborates a positive correlation between unemployment and depression in the Portuguese population, previously observed between 2007 – 2013.Conclusion: This study highlights the need to monitor the occurrence of mental illness in the Portuguese population, especially in moments of greatest social vulnerability in order to establish preventive measures, as a way to mitigate the impact of future economic crises.

A numerical study of a turbulent plane jet impinging on a convex surface and on a flat surface is presented, using the large eddy simulation approach and the Smagorinski-Lilly sub-grid-scale model. The effects of the wall curvature on the unsteady filtered, and the steady mean, parameters characterizing the dynamics of the wall jet are addressed in particular. In the free jet upstream of the impingement region, significant and fairly ordered velocity fluctuations, that are not turbulent in nature, are observed inside the potential core. Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in the shear layer between the jet and the surrounding air are detected in the form of wavy sheets of vorticity. Rolled up vortices are detached from these sheets in a more or less periodic manner, evolving into distorted three dimensional structures. Along the wall jet the Coanda effect causes a marked suction along the convex surface compared with the flat one. As a result, relatively important tangential velocities and a stretching of sporadic streamwise vortices are observed, leading to friction coefficient values on the curved wall higher than those on the flat wall.

ABSTRACTWe offer a preliminary examination of whether national and organizational level contexts amplify or reduce the effects of de-globalization on the performance of MNCs. Theoretically, we borrow ideas from both event system theory and institutional fit to propose a model explicating key dimensions of the relationship between de-globalization, national and organizational context, and MNC performance. We then test our ideas using data assembled from 283 MNCs in 20 countries. We find that while de-globalization has a negative effect on MNC performance, national and organizational level contextual endowments do moderate this relationship. We discuss some implications of our findings and highlight attendant limitations.
