Two new phenylpropanoid glycosides, named β-D-(1- O-acetyl-3,6- O-diferuloyl) fructofuranosyl α-D-6′- O-acetylglucopyranoside (1) and β-D-(1- O-acetyl-3,6- O-diferuloyl) fructofuranosyl α-D-glucopyranoside (2), along with two known analogues (3–4) and four glycerides (5–8), were isolated from the EtOAc extract of the leaves of Ananas comosus. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D- and 2D-NMR analyses, as well as HR-ESI-MS experiments. Compounds 1–4 showed significant antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Three new substituted bithiophenes (1–3), and one new sulf-polyacetylene ester, ritroyne A (16) were isolated from the whole plant of Echinops ritro together with twelve known substituted thiophenes. The structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR as well as MS. Furthermore, the absolute configuration of ritroyne A (16) was established by computational methods. In bioscreening experiments, four compounds (2, 4, 12, 14) showed similar antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 2592 with levofloxacin (8 µg/mL). Five compounds (2, 4, 9, 12, 14) exhibited antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 32–64 µg/mL. Three compounds (2, 4, 12) exhibited antifungal activities against Candida albicans ATCC 2002 with MIC values of 32–64 µg/mL. However, compound 16 did not exhibit antimicrobial activities against three microorganisms.

Objective: To isolate and characterize novel actinomycetes and to evaluate their antibacterial activity against drug-resistant pathogenic bacteriaMethods: In the present study, 19 soil samples were collected from different localities of Ad-Dawadmi, Saudi Arabia. Actinomycetes were isolated from these samples using serial dilution and plating method on Actinomycetes isolation agar supplemented with nalidixic acid and actidione to inhibit bacteria and fungi. Crude extracts of potential actinomycetes were produced by submerged fermentation. The antimicrobial activity of crude extracts of actinomycetes was tested against different bacteria using the agar well diffusion method. Characterization of the isolates was done by morphological, physiological and biochemical methods.Results: A total of 9 (47%) isolates of actinomycetes were isolated from 19 different soil samples tested. Among them, 4 (44%) isolates confirmed as Streptomyces sp. showed potential antimicrobial activity against one or more test organisms. Crude extracts were made from these 4 actinomycetes isolates(DOM1, DOM3, DP3, DP4)and tested for their antibacterial activities against 4 different clinical bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus). Crude extract from DP3 isolate showed highest antibacterial activity against all the four test organisms (28 mm, 21 mm, 20 mm and 18 mm) respectively and DP4 showed lowest antibacterial activity against all the four test organisms (14 mm, 12 mm, 0 mm, 6 mm) respectively. The highest zone of inhibition was shown by DP3 against Staphylococcus aureus (28 mm) and Escherichia coli was resistant for DP4. Most of the Inhibition zones produced by crude extracts showed significant differences when compared with control, tested against test organisms (P<0.05). Inhibition zones produced by DP3 and DOM1 against Staphylococcus aureus were 28 mm and 23 mm, respectively which were strong active when compared with control Ciprofloxacin (18 mm).Conclusion: Further studies for purification of bioactive metabolites and molecular characterization analysis of isolated Streptomyces sp. are in progress which would be helpful in discovering novel compounds of commercial value.

The ability to detect hypochlorite (HOCl/ClO−) in vivo is of great importance to identify and visualize infection. Here, we report the use of imidazoline-2-thione (R1SR2) probes, which act to both sense ClO− and kill bacteria. The N2C=S moieties can recognize ClO− among various typical reactive oxygen species (ROS) and turn into imidazolium moieties (R1IR2) via desulfurization. This was observed through UV–vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy, with a high fluorescence emission quantum yield (ՓF = 43–99%) and large Stokes shift (∆v∼115 nm). Furthermore, the DIM probe, which was prepared by treating the DSM probe with ClO−, also displayed antibacterial efficacy toward not only Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) but also methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum ß-lactamase–producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC), that is, antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These results suggest that the DSM probe has great potential to carry out the dual roles of a fluorogenic probe and killer of bacteria.

Two new piperazine-triones lansai E and F (1, 2), together with four known secondary metabolites lansai D (3), 1-N-methyl-(E,Z)-albonoursin (4), imidazo[4,5-e]-1,2,4-triazine (5), and streptonigrin (6) were isolated from a deep-sea-derived Streptomycetes sp. strain SMS636. The structures of the isolated compounds were confirmed by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, including HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR. Compound 4 exhibited moderate antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values of 12.5 and 25 μg/mL, respectively. Compound 6 displayed significant antibacterial activities against S. aureus, MRSA and Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) with MIC values of 0.78, 0.78 and 1.25 μg/mL, respectively.

Two new compounds, named as sacric acid A (1) and sacric acid B (2), were isolated from the EtOAc extract of Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb. This is the first report on the structure elucidation of these compounds based on UV, IR, and extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic, and ESI-MS techniques.

Abstract4-Trifluoromethylpyridine derivatives 4–8 represent good candidates for the discovery of new antibacterial agents. Fluorinated pyridine nucleosides 4–7 and non-nucleoside analogues 8a,b were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus infantis, Escherichia coli and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the new nucleosides 4–7 range from 1.3 to 4.9 μg/mL and MICs of fluoroaryl derivatives 8a,b are in the range of 1.8–5.5 μg/mL. Activity of amoxicillin, the reference drug, is 1.0–2.0 μg/mL under similar conditions.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil isolated from Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) leaves, Masters originating in Morocco (Benslimane Region, Atlantic-influenced plain). The analysis of the major compounds of essential oil was performed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and this oil is dominated by bornyl acetate (35.05%), camphor (11.17%), and α-pinene (10.84%). The antioxidant properties were evaluated by the test of the radical trap 2,2-diphényl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and the antimicrobial activity of T. articulata essential oil was tested against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli which have been inhibited from the 25 μg/mL.

The chemical investigation of the EtOAc extract of the fresh flowers of Juglans regia L. resulted in a new &#945;-tetralonyl glucoside (1) and two known glucosides (2-3). The structure of the new compound was determined by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis and HRESIMS. The biological evaluation of the obtained glucosides showed that compound 1 and 3 displayed good antioxidant and antibacterial activities. These two compounds were identified as the main functional molecules in the fresh flowers of Juglans regia L.

The antibacterial activity of functionalized zeolite NaY (CBV100) with different concentrations of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) (0.01, 0.05, 0.20 and 0.40 M) was studied against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (Gram positive) and Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 (Gram negative) through disc diffusion technique (DDT). The characterization of functionalized zeolite NaY with fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the attachment of APTES on zeolite NaY. Through DDT, the inhibition zone of functionalized zeolite NaY increased proportionally to the amount of the amine-functional group attached onto zeolite NaY. Functionalized zeolite NaY showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive compared to Gram-negative bacteria. It can be concluded from this study that amine-functionalized zeolite NaY shows evidence of antibacterial activities.
