Exploring the Relationship Between Perceived Visual Access to Nature and Nurse Burnout

Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between perceived visual access to nature views in nurse work and break environments and scores for subscales of Maslach Burnout Inventory among nurses. Background: Burnout is a severe problem among nurses. Literature shows a relationship between stress and burnout and between nature exposure and stress. However, the possible consequent relationship between connection to nature and nurse burnout needs further study. Methods: This cross-sectional study explored the relationship between the subscales (Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment [EE, DP, and PA]) of the Maslach Burnout Inventory as “outcome variables” and perception of view duration, frequency of exposure to views, view content and artwork content as “explanatory variables” in a subset regression model. The study model also included organizational stressors, environmental design factors, unit type, workload, and personal factors as control variables. Fifty-one nurses working in six units in a large tertiary care hospital participated in the study. Results: Percentage of perceived nature views and organizational stressors were the top two best predictors correlating with EE (37% of the EE variance; p < .05). Percentage of perceived nature views, organizational stressors, and environmental design were the top three predictors correlating with DP (43% of variance for DP; p < .05). No significant relationship was found between study variables and PA. Conclusions: The results of this study recommend perceiving nature views as an independent or integrated intervention to meditation and relaxation techniques. From a design standpoint, this study suggests that a unit and breakroom design with access to nature views could work as a consistent preventive intervention for burnout.

BACKGROUND Job burnout is an occupational illness with high prevalence among nurses in China. The job burnout status among hemodialysis nurses should be given more attention because of they handle sophisticated machinery, and there is a high risk of infection in hemodialysis nursing. OBJECTIVE The level and influencing factors of job burnout among hemodialysis nurses in mainland China were investigated. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study conducted in all 31 provinces of mainland China in 2019. Data from nurses responsible for direct care in 2738 hemodialysis units were analyzed. An effective response rate of 99.00% (10570/10677) was achieved. Hemodialysis nurse burnout was measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Working atmosphere and interpersonal relationships with colleagues were each measured by a single question. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the factors related to nurse burnout. Structural equation modeling was used to explore the effect of the working environment, individual factors, and specialist nurse training on the HD nurse burnout and the intention to leave. RESULTS The total burnout score was 38.69 (SD17.47), indicating that the level of job burnout among hemodialysis nurses in mainland China was relatively low. Hemodialysis nurses experienced low-level burnout on the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscale and high-level burnout on the personal accomplishment subscale. Statistically significant differences in burnout levels were associated with working atmosphere, interpersonal relationships with colleagues, specialist nurse training, number of children, night shift, and marital status. CONCLUSIONS The burnout level of HD nurses in mainland China was relatively low. Working atmosphere, interpersonal relationships with colleagues, and training of specialist nurses are the most important influencing factors regarding job burnout in hemodialysis nurses. Therefore, it is suggested that improving the working atmosphere and interpersonal relationship processing ability and providing more training opportunities for nurses can alleviate job burnout in nurses.

Suicidal behavior is a severe problem among drug users. This study examines influential factors related to suicide attempts and analyzes possible mediators of the relationship between perceived social support and suicide attempts amongst Chinese drug users under compulsory institutional drug treatment. Taking perceived social support as the independent variable, we found that the relationship between suicide attempts and perceived social support is mediated by self-esteem as a protective factor and depression as a risk factor. Path analysis shows that self-esteem contributes relatively more to the indirect effects than depression does, accounting for 31.1% and 24.2% of the total effect, respectively. Generally speaking, the findings of this study point to an urgent need for addressing suicide attempts among Chinese drug users while treating self-esteem as the protective factor that deserves as substantial attention as depression receives.

The first objective of this research is to establish and study how the different stages of cognitive impairment and the levels of dependence evolve in patients over 65 years of age, admitted to an acute care hospital, as well as the relationship between these factors and the different social and demographical variables. The results show that the level of dependence decreases suddenly at the time of admission and undergoes a slight recovery at the time of discharge. Although this recovery continues at home after discharge, patients do not get the same level of independence that they used to have before admission. In addition, significant differences in terms of age, marital status and education level were found. In general, our results show that elderly men over 80 years of age, without no education and widowers are more likely to suffer from severe cognitive impairment and be more functionally dependent when admitted to hospital.

This paper mainly discusses the important role of the Chinese ancient view –“harmony between man and nature” in modern design. It focuses on the analysis of popular concepts of “environment orientation” and “people orientation” in environmental design, and holds the view that the concept of “harmony of man and nature” makes up for the deficiencies of the first two. In dealing with the relationship between man and himself or nature, the concept of “harmony between man and nature” offers a good theoretical basis which will surely become new ethics and standard in design.

Background: Thrombocytopenia is a common haematological finding that we come across while managing a sick child. Etiological profile and presentation of thrombocytopenia varies among children. The objective of this study was to study the clinical and laboratory profile of children with thrombocytopenia, associated clinical complications and assess the relationship between platelet levels and severity of disease.Methods: The study was carried out in 644 children between 1 month and 12 years, admitted in Paediatric Department of Raja Rajeshwari medical college and hospital, Bangalore between August 2012 to August 2014.Results: The commonest causes of thrombocytopenia in our study were of infectious aetiology (86.6%). Among Infections Viral infections were the major cause in more than 78% of cases. Other causes included haematological problems, drug induced thrombocytopenia and connective tissue disorders. Bleeding manifestations were present in 33.07% of patients and the commonest bleeds were skin and mucous membranes. Bleeding manifestations were seen most commonly in children with a platelet count less than 50000/µl.Conclusions: Viral Infections were the commonest cause for thrombocytopenia in Children. Platelet count was neither predictive of bleeding manifestations nor predictive of need for platelet transfusion.

Abstract Background: Occupational burnout among nurses is one of the major factors which affect the quality of nursing care. Assessing the relationship between burnout and its associated factors is one of the most basic things that should be done so that later, actions can be taken to reduce burnout. Fear of COVID-19 is one of the factors that can increase burnout of nurses during the Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19) pandemic.Aim: To investigate the relationship between job burnout and fear of COVID-19 among ICU and CCU nurses.Methods: The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) were distributed to ICU and CCU nurses (n = 170) at Shahid Madani Cardiac Hospital, Tabriz, Iran, and the correlation between job burnout and fear of COVID-19 was calculated.Results: The results show that the level of emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment among participants of this study is average, and depersonalization is at a low level. Also, the level of fear of coronavirus is below average among the respondents. The research showed that emotional exhaustion and fear of COVID-19 were positively correlated (p < 0.05), but there was not any significant correlation between depersonalization and fear of Coronavirus; as the relationship between reduced personal accomplishment and fear of COVID-19. In addition, there were significant correlations between age and reduced personal accomplishment, as well as marital status and reduced personal accomplishment (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the results showed that there were not any significant correlations between gender and burnout dimensions, nor between educational degree and burnout dimensions.Conclusion: As job burnout reduces the quality of nursing care, managers must take strategies that reduce job burnout. One of the strategies that they can take is to reduce the fear of COVID-19 by taking wise strategies.

Abstract.Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, use, understand and regulate emotions to facilitate thought (Mayer and Salovey, 1997). The concept of burnout is the English expression to describe what stopped functioning because of the exhaustion of energy (France, 1987, cited by Carlotto, 2012).This study aimed to understand the perceived emotional intelligence as a protective factor against burnout, as well as studying the relationship between emotional intelligence and burnout. The sample was constituted by 250 teachers in the 2nd cycle (26.4%), 3rd cycle (57.2%) and Secondary school (16.4%), with (70.4%) females and (29.6%), males in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), Portugal. As instruments, we used a socio-demographic and professional’s questionnaire, the trait metamood scale (TMMS-24), the expressiveness and emotion regulation of Berkeley questionnaire and the Maslach burnout inventory (MBI). In the study did not find evidence that marital status, age, length of service and level of education influences taught emotional intelligence and burnout. Only gender seems to influence emotional intelligence. To confirm the statistical relationship between emotional intelligence and burnout, we used Spearman´s correlation test between variables and it was concluded that the higher the repair of emotions, the less emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and higher the revaluation emotions are higher is the emotional exhaustion.Keywords: Emotional intelligence, burnout, teacher, emotional expressiveness, emotional regulation.Resumo.A inteligência emocional é a capacidade de perceber, usar, conhecer e regular as emoções para facilitar o pensamento (Mayer & Salovey, 1997). Este estudo teve como objetivos compreender a inteligência emocional percebida como fator de proteção face ao burnout, bem como estudar as relações entre a inteligência emocional e o burnout. No estudo participaram 250 professores do 2º ciclo (26.4%), 3º ciclo (57.2%) e Secundário (16.4 %), do género feminino (70.4%) e do masculino (29.6%), da Região Autónoma da Madeira (RAM), Portugal. Como instrumentos usámos um Questionário de Dados Sócio-Demográficos e Profissionais, o Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24), o Questionário de Expressividade e o de Regulação Emocional de Berkeley e o Inventário de Burnout de Maslach (MBI). No estudo realizado não se encontrou evidências de que o estado civil, idade, tempo de serviço e nível de ensino lecionado influencie a inteligência emocional e o burnout. Somente o género pareceu influenciar a inteligência emocional. Para confirmar a relação estatística entre a inteligência emocional e o burnout foi realizado um teste de correlação de Spearman entre as variáveis e concluiu-se que quanto maior a reparação das emoções, menor é a exaustão emocional e a despersonalização e quanto maior a reavaliação das emoções, maior a exaustão emocional.Palavras-chave: Inteligência emocional, burnout, professor, expressividade emocional e regulação emocional.

This study examined the effect of job satisfaction and satisfaction with life on perceptions of teachers' professional burnout and the regulatory role of collective teacher efficacy perception by conducting applied research on teachers who work in different educational settings. The measuring tools were "Maslach Burnout Inventory", "Short Form Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire", "Satisfaction with Life Scale" and "Collective Teacher Efficacy Scale". The findings of the research showed that: Teachers' perceptions of job satisfaction and satisfaction with life negatively affected their perceptions of professional burnout. Collective teacher efficacy had a regulatory effect on the relationship between satisfaction with life and professional burnout, and on the relationship between job satisfaction and professional burnout.

Abstract. How can FOSS GIS support generative economy processes in small settled communities? The paper answers this question by proposing a toolbox made up of specific open geospatial data that can be processed through FOSS GIS. These data consist of specific maps, accompanied by numerical values.The information collected is intended to lay the foundations for an open-access manual of procedures to support the creation of an open database. This manual, currently under development, is created within a research funded by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Politecnico di Milano and is an integral part of an experimental game aimed at supporting students in the development of local self-sustainability scenarios.The manual is called the GED Toolkit. The acronym GED stands for Generative Environmental Design, with this term we refer to an approach to the design of the anthropized environment oriented towards the development of generative economies.The paper presents good practices, measuring their consistency with Generative Economy Principles through resource and impacts mapping. These are useful in the first place to understand the systemic features of the practice itself and the relationship with the territory that hosts it, and secondly to verify the possible transferability to other contexts.

This study examined the relationship among dimensions of self-reported Emotional Intelligence, Engagement and Burnout, using the Trait Meta-Mood Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale in a sample of Spanish professionals who work at institutions for people with intellectual disabilities. The results showed that Emotional Clarity was significantly associated with Personal Accomplishment ( r = .25) and Dedication ( r = .25). Further, Repair to moods was significantly correlated with all Engagement dimensions (.20 Vigor, .30 Dedication, .36 Absorption) and with Personal Accomplishment (.31). These findings extend previous research with college students in which Clarity and Repair to moods subscales were relevant predictors of well-being indexes and interpersonal functioning and suggest that the Trait Meta-Mood Scale subscales also show significant relationships with emotional functioning and work-related variables in a professional sample.
