In 1941, Chiang Kai-shek put forward the proposition that ‘National defence is built upon science and technology, and the strength of a country is secured by national defence’, marking the official start of the National Defence Science Movement (国防科学运动). Attempting to answer the call, a number of journals and newspapers published special issues dedicated to the movement, including many contributions from senior political officials and technological influencers. The papers explored the meaning and role of science, scientific research, science popularization, science-related awards and similar topics. The writers underscored the value of science, publicized the idea of ‘saving the country by means of science’ (科学救国), highlighted the value of basic science and social science, and explained how different disciplines could play their part in national defence. They envisaged postwar reconstruction plans in fields as diverse as telecommunications and forestry and called on young people to study science and take the initiative by devoting themselves to scientific research. The publication of these special issues raised the status of science, especially the basic and social sciences, while playing a positive role in encouraging young people to engage in scientific research.

The Kyzylorda period in the development of the education system of Kazakhstan occupies a special place. The center's move to the city of Kyzylorda gave a new impetus to the political and public life of the region. Young people seeking education started coming to the city of Kyzylorda from other regions. After assigning the status of the capital in the city of Kyzylorda began to open up new educational institutions. The Kazakh Institute of education and medical schools moved from Orenburg. The city has opened educational schools of the first and second categories. Special boarding schools were opened for people living in remote areas. The work of boarding schools was constantly monitored by special commissions. In 1925, the famous writer Gabiden Mustafin worked and studied in the city of Kyzylorda. Also, S. Mukanov, A. Kenzhin and other representatives of the Kazakh intelligentsia worked in the education system.

The appearance of ‘Olly the cat’ on the doorsteps of a major UK international airport provides occasion to reconsider the role of the animal in organization and offers suggestive insight into how we might have to learn new ways of being within extended multi-species or interspecies ontologies. Olly is found to lead multiple lives that cannot be reduced to the status of object or media of human intentionality. Her increasing political involvement in the management and organization of the airport challenges orthodox understanding of agency and organizational action. As the ethnography becomes progressively more implicated in the entanglements between human and animal, the concept of ‘feline politics’ is proposed and deployed. This allows research to retain focus on actions and behaviour and modes of thinking that would ordinarily be occluded by conventional modes of organizational representation. In these ways the ethnography moves beyond the interpretative and symbolic treatment of organization analysis and finds resource in the recent ‘ontological turn’ in the social sciences. Embracing what is the inevitable participation of the social sciences in the reflexive and recursive enactment of its phenomena, the ethnography discovers new potentialities and new capacities for action as emergent properties of ‘the human’ and ‘the animal’ were mutually learnt, exchanged and acquired. This article adds to what we know about the limits of management as it confronts a radical undecidability characterized by the co-existence of multiple and interacting ontological becomings.

AbstractThe general aim of this paper is to question the idea that hermeneutic and critical social sciences have to be conceived as specific embodiments of the scientific enterprise. This idea is rather implicit in Habermas's work, but has its grounds in his thesis about the argumentative unity of all sciences, upheld for the first time in 1973. Such a point of view turns out to be untenable for two reasons. First, the indiscriminating inclusion of the hermeneutic and critical social sciences in scientific enterprise raises problems of consistency with regard to the systematic guidelines of The Theory of Communicative Action. Moreover, the thesis of argumentative unity of the sciences itself is incompatible with Habermas's methodological conception of the role of Verstehen in the social sciences developed in section 1.4 of the book. Finally, the author argues that this conception calls for another understanding of the status and role of the hermeneutic and critical disciplines, which is outlined in some detail.

This article is a reflective account of the process of a social care worker’s professional development over a span of 28-years, primarily working within children’s residential care settings. It charts the author’s journey with regard to his ability to cope with anxiety (pain-based fear) and to live “on the edge” in his professional practice. The author’s personal experience as a young boy of the death of his father is identified as having caused pain-based behaviours for the author until such time as he faced the pain of this loss. The traumatic experience then became an asset in his direct work with children and young people in the role of a “wounded healer”. The article introduces the concept of “vicarious confidence” and its critical role in leadership and supervision. Self-care is discussed and the concept of “system-trauma” is identified. The article also discusses the role of magic in social care and links this to neuroscience and brain MRI images. The article highlights the positive role pain can play in enabling workers to connect empathically with hurt children and young people and posits that if we are to care authentically then we must be prepared to experience pain.

This chapter analyses the relevant aspects related to research journals and examines the growth and trends of social science research (SSR) journals; the status on access and delivery models of SSR journals; the role of institutions, associations, and commercial publishers in promoting SSR journals; and the quality and quantity of SSR journals in India. The study found that of the total 2131 journals analysed, about 84 per cent are published in English, only 9 per cent in English as well as in Hindi/regional languages together, and 7 per cent only in Hindi/regional languages. Analysis of 1992 journals published in English and English/Hindi/regional language(s) shows that over 40 per cent of these are in disciplines of economics and allied subjects. Education, law, and multidisciplinary themes take the majority of the remaining share.

Maintaining the focus on the role of the child in relation to figures of authority, and the thresholds between dependence and independence outlined in Chapter 3, Chapter 4 analyses some of Shakespeare’s comic children. Turning to the relationship between socialization and marriage and the institutional structures through which the young people of these plays are ushered, it explores the role of marriage in the stratification of emotional authority. Concentrating on A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing, Chapter 4 examines the tensions between the sociable and gendered body. Analysing contemporary attitudes to marriage as transference of power from the father to the husband, it explores the status of the woman between child and wife. Thinking about the terms of agency that these plays deploy, the spaces in which women are shown to ‘grow up’, and the extent to which Shakespeare’s comedies complicate the representation of marriage as socialization, this chapter positions its focus on the child as social commodity.

The work is related to the creation of new models of teaching and leads to new knowledge about processes and phenomena in pedagogical science. In our work we analyze both current educational and delicate ideological problem accompanied with scientific and practical application reliability. Identifying the specifics in the ethics of young people, verification of model work and approbation in educational work in Bulgarian language and literature is an important point of the overall personal development of young people. We use a theoretical framework that we draw from research, adapt and correct it according to the results of the experiment. The concept of the lesson is oriented towards the formation of competence.In the exhibition we present the capabilities of each of the tools for personal development; creativity and teamwork: communication via Internet; the role of the presentations and associative tasks; place the tools for effectiveness in the educational process.The implementation of the control unit tools plays an important role in reporting achievements and creativity.In conducting a productive dialogue with students, we take into account the role of the teacher's charisma by creating opportunities for trust, mutual understanding and respect for students in relation to the teacher.The conclusions from the conducted research are important and reveal the relevance and reliability of the applied methods and techniques in the literary-educational discourse.Students which are studying longer and using interactive methods and techniques, are providing more deep and reasoning answers. Their depth and analyticity depend on their participation in different forms of work, using both traditional methods and techniques, as well as interactive ones. The participants are placed in the same conditions and have the choice of participation.The positive role of creative education and development through the proposed model of literature learning has been taken into account.In conclusion based on our data we offer our understanding about the role of the work instruments in the educational process in Bulgarian language and literature students in terms of multiculturalism.

Abstract Chemical Highs looks at how young people themselves develop and share with their peers a multitude of ways to maximize the pleasures and minimize the risks involved in getting high, an empowering practice that we refer to as “harm reduction from below.” Ethnographies from the Amsterdam festival and afterparty scene illuminate two patterns: young people’s efforts to creatively self-regulate to achieve “hassle-free highs,” and the potentially positive role of government policy. This context is contrasted with that of youth in Indonesia, who also seek out hassle-free highs with their peers, but live under a government that is waging a deadly war against drugs, where they have little access to harm reduction information and tools. Our team discovered that Indonesian youth are turning to psychoactive prescription drugs (PPDs) to get high, which they consider safer than illicit drugs that can lead to the death penalty, but which are also highly addictive.

The paper investigates students’ perspective regarding the role of Smartphones in an educational context. The method consists in conducting a questionnaire among 80 respondents – final-year students from four universities in Baghdad, Iraq; and data processing through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 22.0) by applying recurrence, rate, mean score, standard deviation, autonomous example t-test and One Way ANOVA. Such a blended approach allows demonstrating that smartphones play a positive role in helping students learn and get educated. This study is significant for E-learners as it offers an innovative method of teaching; however a sound pedagogical infrastructure and training is needed.
