Student Retention in School Bands and Orchestras: A Literature Review

Author(s):
Phillip M. Hash

The purpose of this review was to synthesize the literature on attrition and retention in instrumental music and to identify strategies to encourage students’ continued participation in school bands and orchestras. Retaining members from 1 year to the next is a key factor in building ensembles and helping individual musicians reach their full potential. At least 35 years of research, however, has yielded little consistency in determining why students persist in or dropout of instrumental study. Most decisions likely involve (a) practical considerations, especially related to scheduling and other interests and commitments; (b) students’ attitudes on their musicianship and various aspects of the program; and (c) the influence of other people. The MUSICSM Model of Motivation can provide a framework through which stakeholders examine how their school bands and orchestras meet the needs of students, thus influencing their decisions to leave or remain in the program.

This paper considers the literature that may inform our understanding of parent–teacher–pupil interactions in instrumental music. It draws on research directly concerned with instrumental music learning and that from the wider psychological, sociological and educational literature concerned with conceptions of effective learning and teaching; conceptions of effective parenting; and dimensions of interpersonal relationships. Finally, a systemic, dynamic model is proposed which may serve to guide future research in the field.

Proses pengkajian 10 artikel ini diklasifikasi menjadi 3 kelompok sub topik. Berdasarkan kajian yang telah dilakukan, diperoleh hasil pembelajaran online di era pandemi COVID-19 sangat memacu pertumbuhan pembelajaran online yang memudahkan dalam proses belajar mengajar, namun jika dinilai dari perubahan sikap siswa, sistem tersebut lebih menunjukkan sisi negatif, sehingga diperlukan adanya evaluasi terkait pembelajaran online oleh pemerintah Kata kunci: Covid-19, pembelajaran online, Systematic Literature Review(SLR)Abstract: COVID-19 pandemic is a health crisis that currently has been becoming the concern of countries in the world. COVID-19 is a disease that has never been previously identified in humans, which is caused by the Sars-CoV-2 virus. The spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia has made this country need to do social distancing to prevent the increasing number of COVID-19 patients. This social distancing has disrupted several activities in various fields, especially in the field of education. The paper done refers to 10 current articles in 2020 that discuss current problems, with the COVID-19 impact of online learning using Systematic Literature Review method. The review process of these 10 articles was classified into 3 sub-topic groups. Based on the studies that had been carried out, the result of online learning in the COVID-19 pandemic era has greatly accelerated the growth of online learning which eases the teaching and learning process. However, if it is judged by the changes in the students’ attitudes, the system shows more of negative sides. Therefore, there should be an evaluation related to the online learning by the government.Keywords: Covid-19, online learning, Systematic Literature Review (SLR)

Context: Many publications have described, measured, tracked or assessed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) activities that impact the environment. A complete conceptual view of the environmental impact of ICT can be described in three orders of effect: Direct, indirect and systemic. Objective: The goal of this study is to find out how the existing literature contributes towards our understanding of the environmental impact of ICT. We approach this question by identifying factors that can be of influence on the environmental impact and map these factors onto a conceptual framework of Green ICT. Method: We used a systematic literature review to collect factors of influence regarding the environmental impact of ICT. Results: From the data we collected and the analyses made, we created a taxonomy, and report on the frequencies of the factors of influence in the primary studies as well as gaps and additions compared to the conceptual framework. We found five main classes of influence that can form a continuous cycle, but noted that the research field is strongly focused on the direct impact of ICT. Conclusion: Our study contributes towards a better understanding of the environmental impact of ICT by framing factors of influence in a conceptual framework. The taxonomy we create and the analysis of the studies could be helpful in defining a research agenda, to further enable the full potential of Green ICT. In addition, the taxonomy can be used as a starting point for a practical tool, for organizations that wish to apply Green ICT to its full extent.

The green bond market is attracting new issuers and a more diversified base of investors. However, the size of the green bond market remains small compared to the challenges it is meant to address and to the overall traditional bond market. This paper is based on a unique methodology combining an extensive literature review, market data analysis, and interviews with a large spectrum of green bond market participants. We identify the current barriers explaining the lack of scalability of the green bond market: a deficit of harmonized global standards; risks of greenwashing; the perception of higher costs for issuers; the lack of supply of green bonds for investors; and the overall infancy of the market. This paper makes several recommendations to overcome these obstacles and unlock the full potential of green bonds to finance sustainability goals.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review that aims to provide insight into the characteristics and effectiveness of supply chain visibility (SCV), as well as to identify metrics that capture these aspects in business processes. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review of the supply chain literature is conducted to identify the characteristics and the effectiveness of SCV. The synthesis of SCV effectiveness and its metrics are based on the process-oriented approach which relates the effectiveness of SCV to improved business performance. Findings This study reveals that the characteristics of SCV can be captured in terms of the accessibility, quality, and usefulness of information. The benefits of SCV are found to extend beyond improvements to operational efficiency of business processes or to the strategic competencies of an organization. Practical implications This study underlines that clear agreements between all players involved in the SC can help to solve problems caused by information completeness (type and amount of information), and unlock the full potential of SCV projects. Originality/value By using a process-oriented approach, this review provides a comprehensive explanation of the functions of SCV, as well as its first-order effects, in terms of automational, informational, and transformational characteristics.

Bone plays an important role in dental implant treatment success. The goal of this literature review is to analyze the influence of bone definition and finite element parameters on stress in dental implants and bone in numerical studies. A search was conducted of Pubmed, Science Direct and LILACS, and two independent reviewers performed the data extraction. The quality of the selected studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook tool for clinical trials. Seventeen studies were included. Titanium was the most commonly-used material in dental implants. The magnitude of the applied loads varied from 15 to 300 N with a mean of 182 N. Complete osseointegration was the most common boundary condition. Evidence from this review suggests that bone is commonly defined as an isotropic material, despite being an anisotropic tissue, and that it is analyzed as a ductile material, instead of as a fragile material. In addition, and in view of the data analyzed in this review, it can be concluded that there is no standardization for conducting finite element studies in the field of dentistry. Convergence criteria are only detailed in two of the studies included in this review, although they are a key factor in obtaining accurate results in numerical studies. It is therefore necessary to implement a methodology that indicates which parameters a numerical simulation must include, as well as how the results should be analyzed.

In order to exploit full potential of hybrid materials, it is necessary to develop optimized load-dependent component designs, new manufacturing processes and joining technologies. Structural integrity concerning the interfaces between the single materials of the hybrid component poses a key factor to success. In this case, adhesion often constitutes the limiting factor for the maximum transferable load. In this investigation, a load-oriented innovative concept to increase the structural integrity of hybrid plastic-metal parts was developed. Local mechanical undercuts on the metal surface were created to generate an additional mechanical interlocking effect between the join partners. The aim is to find the best surface structure geometry to enhance mechanical bonding. Therefore, metal samples were structured by a new process and transferred to hybrid specimens by injection molding. For comparison, specimens with adhesive bonding (epoxy resin) of metal and plastic were prepared. The join partners aluminum AlCuMg1-2017 and PA6 as well as PA6GF30 were investigated. The evaluation of an increase in the structural integrity was determined using tensile tests. A significant improvement in joint strength compared with direct joining using adhesive bonding was achieved.
