Abstract Background MicroRNA-140 (miR-140) is one of the most widely investigated miRNAs in cell carcinogenesis and cancer development. Despite present proposals of employing miR-140 as a candidate biomarker for cancer prognosis, its effectiveness in predicting patient survival and clinicopathological outcome is still under debate. Methods A systematic search for English literature using online databases was performed with pre-established criteria. Odds ratios (ORs) or hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were collected to delineate the correlation between miR-140 levels and cancer patient prognosis. Results For this meta-analysis, we selected 12 papers for analysis, involving 1386 participants. Based on our analysis, high levels of miR-140 were strongly correlated with enhanced patient overall survival (OS) (HR = 0.728, 95% CI = 0.601-0.882, P = 0.001). In addition, we also observed that elevated miR-140 levels significantly led to better OS in patients with cancers in different parts of the body like digestive system (HR = 0.675, 95% CI = 0.538-0.848, P = 0.001), digestive tract (HR = 0.709, 95% CI = 0.565-0.889, P = 0.003), and head and neck (HR = 0.603, 95% CI = 0.456-0.797, P < 0.001). Additionally, we verified that the low miR-140 levels was related to advanced TNM stage (OR = 0.420, 95% CI = 0.299-0.590, P < 0.001), worse histologic grade (OR = 0.410, 95% CI = 0.261-0.643, P < 0.001), and positive lymph node metastasis status (OR = 0.341, 95% CI = 0.144-0.807, P = 0.014). Conclusions Taken together, our results suggest that elevated miR-140 levels can be employed as a favorable biomarker for cancer patient prognosis. This information can greatly benefit in the formation of an individualized therapeutic plan for the treatment of cancer patients.

AbstractObjective: A number of recent clinical studies have identified a relationship between elevated expressions of 14-3-3 and poorer patient prognosis in the context of several cancers. The present meta-analysis was therefore conducted to gain an enhanced understanding of the prognostic importance of 14-3-3 levels in cancer patients. Methods: Two reviewers independently systematically reviewed the Web of Science, Embase, and PubMed databases to identify published, suitable studies through October 2019. The correlation between the level of 14-3-3 and cancer patient survival were assessed based upon pooled HR (hazard ratios) and 95% CI (confidence intervals) derived from chosen studies. Results: In total we were able to identify 22 eligible studies that had enrolled 2676 patients in the present meta-analysis. Assessment of these studies revealed that elevated 14-3-3 level correlated significantly with poorer OS (overall survival) (HR : 1.93, 95% CI : 1.42-2.61) in cancer patients. This was true even when studies were analyzed in subgroups according to tumor type, sample size, analysis type, and method of HR determination. With respect to disease-free survival (DFS), the pooled HR for cancer patients expressing high levels of 14-3-3 was 1.89 (95% CI: 1.56-2.30). Patients with elevated 14-3-3 expression also exhibited reduced CSS (cancer-specific survival) (HR: 3.47, 95% CI: 2.12-5.69).Conclusions: The outcomes indicate that higher level of 14-3-3 correlates with poorer patient prognosis in a range of cancer types.Keywords: Meta-analysis, Prognosis, 14-3-3 Proteins C Continuous...

Background: The mortality and recurrence of patients with cancer is of high prevalence. SET-binding factor 2 (SBF2) antisense RNA1 (lncRNA-SBF2-AS1) is a promising long non-coding RNA. There is increasing evidence that SBF2-AS1 is abnormally expressed in various tumors and is associated with cancer prognosis. However, the identification of the effect of lncRNA SBF2-AS1 in tumors remains necessary. Materials and Methods: Up to November 2, 2020, electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline, and Web of Science, were searched. The results were evaluated by pooled odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 11 literatures on cancer patients were included for the present meta-analysis. The combined results revealed that high expression of SBF2-AS1 was significantly associated with unfavorable overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.34-1.62, P < 0.00001) in a variety of cancers. In additional, the increase in SBF2-AS1 expression was also correlated with tumor size ((larger vs. smaller) OR = 2.34, 95% CI: 1.47-3.70, P = 0.0003), advanced TNM stage ((III/IV vs. I/II) OR = 2.78, 95% CI: 1.75-4.41, P < 0.0001), lymph node metastasis ((Positive vs. Negative) OR = 3.06, 95% CI: 1.93-4.86, P < 0.00001), and histological grade ((poorly vs. well/moderately) OR = 2.58, 95% CI: 1.47-4.52, P = 0.001) in patients with cancer. Furthermore, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset valuated that SBF2-AS1 was upregulated in a variety of tumors, and predicted the worse prognosis. Conclusions: Our results of this meta-analysis demonstrate that high SBF2-AS1 expression may become a potential target for predicting the prognosis of human cancers.

Abstract Background: Multiple studies have analyzed the correlation between Cyclin E and breast cancer prognosis, but the results are controversial. In this study, a meta-analysis was used to summarize the published reports, clarify the predictive value of Cyclin E in breast cancer, and the relationship with clinicopathological characteristics.Methods: A systematic search was retrieved in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Collaboration Library on the comprehensive search strategy up to 24 August 2020. recurrence-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) was estimated using pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) by univariate and multivariate analysis.Results: Twenty-eight eligible studies met our inclusion criteria. The present meta-analysis indicates that high cyclin E expression is independently associated with poor OS, BCSS, and RFS in female breast cancer patients by univariate and multivariate analysis. Furthermore, higher histological grades, estrogen receptor (ER)-negativity, positive lymph node metastasis, younger patients, and premenopausal status were associated with Cyclin E overexpression. Conclusions: High expression of Cyclin E is associated with poor breast cancer outcomes and relevant to multiple clinical characteristics.

Background/Aims: Several recent studies have demonstrated that Stathmin 1expression may be closely associated with prognosis in patients with various types of cancers. In the present study, we conducted a meta-analysis of all available studies in the English literature to assess the prognostic value of Stathmin 1expression in patients with solid cancers. Methods: The online databases PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for literature regarding Stathmin 1 and its association with patient outcomes associated with solid cancers. Results: A total of 23 articles including 26 studies that contained 5 335 patients were retrieved and analyzed. Our results indicated that high Stathmin 1 expression yielded a worse overall survival (OS) (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.17, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.81–2.60), disease-free survival (DFS) (HR = 2.46, 95% CI: 2.00–3.02), disease-specific survival (DSS) (HR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.58– 2.47) and progression-free survival (PFS)/recurrence-free survival (RFS) (HR = 2.09, 95% CI: 1.51–2.89). Furthermore, the association of high Stathmin 1 expression with poor survival was significant even for sub-group analyses of different tumor types, ethnicities, methods used to calculate HRs, detected methods, and analysis types. Conclusion: In summary, this meta-analysis determined that high Stathmin 1 expression is associated with poor prognosis in patients with solid cancers and expression of this protein could be a clinically useful prognostic biomarker.

Antibiotics (ABs) are common medications used for treating infections. In cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), concomitant exposure to ABs may impair the efficacy of ICIs and lead to a poorer outcome compared to AB non-users. We report here the results of a meta-analysis evaluating the effects of ABs on the outcome of patients with solid tumours treated with ICIs. PubMed, the Cochrane Library and Embase were searched from inception until September 2019 for observational or prospective studies reporting the prognoses of adult patients with cancer treated with ICIs and with or without ABs. Overall survival (OS) was the primary endpoint, and progression-free survival (PFS) was the secondary endpoint. The effect size was reported as hazard ratios (HRs) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and an HR > 1 associated with a worse outcome in ABs users compared to AB non-users. Fifteen publications were retrieved for a total of 2363 patients. In the main analysis (n = 15 studies reporting data), OS was reduced in patients exposed to ABs before or during treatment with ICIs (HR = 2.07, 95%CI 1.51–2.84; p < 0.01). Similarly, PFS was inferior in AB users in n = 13 studies with data available (HR = 1.53, 95%CI 1.22–1.93; p < 0.01). In cancer patients treated with ICIs, AB use significantly reduced OS and PFS. Short duration/course of ABs may be considered in clinical situations in which they are strictly needed.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that microRNAs (miRNA) have prognostic values in cancers. This meta-analysis seeks to summarize the global predicting role of miR-155 for survival in patients with a variety of carcinomas.METHODS: Eligible studies were identified through multiple search strategies. Data were extracted from studies investigating the relationship between miR-155 expression and survival in cancer patients. Combined hazard ratios (HRs) of miR-155 for outcome were analyzed.RESULTS: A total of 16 studies dealing with various carcinomas were included for this meta-analysis. For overall survival, higher miR-155 expression could significantly predict worse outcome with the pooled HR of 2.057 (95% CI: 1.392–3.039). For relapse or progress-free survival, elevated miR-155 was also a significant predictor, with a combined HR of 1.918 (95% CI: 1.311–2.806,). In addition, subgroup analysis showed that higher expression of miR-155 had the trends to predict worse outcome in lung cancer. However, the HRs did not reach the statistical significance.CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that miR-155 detection has a prognostic value in cancer patients. Regularly measuring miR-155 expression may be useful in clinical practice.

The fibroblast growth factor-4 receptor (FGFR4) is a member of receptor tyrosine kinase. The FGFR4 Gly388Arg polymorphism in the transmembrane domain of the receptor has been shown to increase genetic susceptibility to cancers. However, its prognostic impact in cancer patients still remains controversial. Herein, we performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the clinicopathological and prognostic impacts of the FGFR4 Gly388Arg polymorphism in patients with cancer. We carried out a computerized extensive search using PubMed, Medline, and Ovid Medline databases up to July 2021. From 44 studies, 11,574 patients were included in the current meta-analysis. Regardless of the genetic models, there was no significant correlation of the FGFR4 Gly388Arg polymorphism with disease stage 3/4. In the homozygous model (Arg/Arg vs. Gly/Gly), the Arg/Arg genotype tended to show higher rate of lymph node metastasis compared with the Gly/Gly genotype (odds ratio = 1.21, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.99-1.49, p = 0.06). Compared to patients with the Arg/Gly or Arg/Arg genotype, those with the Gly/Gly genotype had significantly better overall survival (hazard ratios (HR) = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.05-1.35, p = 0.006) and disease-free survival (HR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.03-1.53, p = 0.02). In conclusion, this meta-analysis showed that the FGFR4 Gly388Arg polymorphism was significantly associated with worse prognosis in cancer patients. Our results suggest that this polymorphism may be a valuable genetic marker to identify patients at higher risk of recurrence or mortality.

Background: Identifying the preferred place of death is a key indicator of the quality of death in cancer patients and one of the most important issues for health service policymakers. This study was done to determine the preferred place of death and the factors affecting it for adult patients with cancer.Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis study four online databases (PubMed, Scopus, web of science, ProQuest) were searched by relevant keywords. Quality assessment of papers was conducted using Newcastle-Ottawa (NOS) criterion. Odds ratios, relative risks, and 95% confidence intervals were determined for each of the factors extracted from the investigations.Results: A total of 14,920 participants of 27 studies were included into the meta-analysis. Based on the results, 55% of cancer patients with a confidence interval [95% CI (41–49)] preferred home, 17% of patients with a confidence interval [95% CI (−12%) 23)] preferred hospital and 10% of patients with confidence interval [95% CI (13–18)] preferred hospices as their favored place to die. Effective factors were also reported in the form of demographic characteristics, disease-related factors and psychosocial factors.Conclusions: This study showed that more than half of cancer patients chose home as their preferred place of death. Abstract Background It is well known that liposome-based delivery of cytotoxic chemotherapeutics has been proposed as a putative strategy to enhance drug tolerability and efficacy compared to the conventional chemotherapy. However, its potential effects on improving cancer patients prognosis remain largely unknown. The current meta-analysis is to explore the prognosis of cancer patients undergoing liposomal doxorubicin-based chemotherapy. Methods A detailed review of English and Chinese literature was conducted from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine disc (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) up to March 21st, 2019. We evaluate its possible correlations using hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The pooled data were calculated by STATA software and Review Manager 5.3 software. Results Consequently, 26 studies including 7943 patients were satisfied in current analysis. We found that there were no significant differences between liposomal and conventional chemotherapy in OS (HR=0.98, 95%CI: 0.93-1.04, P=0.544) and PFS (HR=1.00, 95%CI: 0.92-1.10, P=0.945). Likewise, subgroup-analysis regarding country, cancer type and sample sizes also showed the similar results of the two paired groups. Conclusion Taken together, our findings have demonstrated that there was no association of undergoing liposomal doxorubicin-based chemotherapy with cancer prognosis. However, detailed and further studies are needed to confirm these conclusions.
