AbstractThe destruction caused by ballistic ejecta from the phreatic eruptions of Mt. Ontake in 2014 and Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane (Mt. Moto-Shirane) in 2018 in Japan, which resulted in numerous casualties, highlighted the need for better evacuation facilities. In response, some mountain huts were reinforced with aramid fabric to convert them into shelters. However, a number of decisions must be made when working to increase the number of shelters, which depend on the location where they are to be built. In this study, we propose a method of using high-strength steel to reinforce wooden buildings for use as shelters. More specifically, assuming that ballistic ejecta has an impact energy of 9 kJ or more, as in previous studies, we developed a method that utilizes SUS304 and SS400 unprocessed steel plates based on existing impact test data. We found that SUS304 is particularly suitable for use as a reinforcing material because it has excellent impact energy absorption characteristics due to its high ductility as well as excellent corrosion resistance. With the aim of increasing the structural strength of steel shelters, we also conducted an impact test on a shelter fabricated from SS400 deck plates (i.e., steel with improved flexural strength provided by work-hardened trapezoidal corrugated plates). The results show that the shelter could withstand impact with an energy of 13.5 kJ (2.66 kg of simulated ballistic ejecta at 101 m/s on impact). In addition, from the result of the impact test using the roof-simulating structure, it was confirmed the impact absorption energy is further increased when artificial pumice as an additional protective layer is installed on this structure. Observations of the shelter after the impact test show that there is still some allowance for deformation caused by projectile impact, which means that the proposed steel shelter holds promise, not only structurally, but also from the aspects of transportation and assembly. Hence, the usefulness of shelters that use steel was shown experimentally. However, shelter construction should be suitable for the target environment.

Abstract The article discusses the static and dynamic properties of high-strength, boron-containing Hardox 600 steel that is resistant to abrasive wear, both in its delivery state and after normalization. Since the available published material in the literature does not have any real mechanical indicators of the abovementioned steel, a static tension test was carried out at an ambient temperature. The steel’s tensile strength, yield strength, Young’s modulus, elongation and reduction of area were determined from the test. The Charpy impact test at temperatures of −40 °C, −20 °C, 0 °C, and +20 °C and fractographic analysis were performed to determine the transition temperature of ductility to brittleness. In dynamic load conditions, the assigned values of impact energy do not always truly determine the material behavior. Thus, the aim of the fractography was to provide precision when determining the behavior. A significant difference in the impact energy of the tested steel with respect to its heat treatment and ductile-brittle transition temperature was observed and determined based on the impact test result, as well as the nature of the fracture. On the basis of the determined structural and strength characteristics, an analysis of the possibility of application of Hardox 600 steel on selected elements of working machines was performed.

The purpose of this work is to study the best number of layer with the higher impact energy using Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP). The number of layers used in this study was 25, 33, 41, and 49. The impact test was performed using Single Stage Gas Gun (SSGG) for each layers given above with different bullets such as blunt, hemispherical and conical bullets. The gas gun pressure was set to 5, 10, 15 and 20 bar. All of the signals captured from the impact test were recorded using a ballistic data acquisition system. The correlation between the impact energy in terms of number of layer and type of bullet from this test are presented and discussed. It can be summarise that as the number of layer increases, impact energy also increases. In addition, from the results, it was observed that by using different types of bullets (blunt, hemispherical, conical), there is only a slight difference in values of energy absorbed by the specimen.

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) have lower density and a higher service temperature limit than nickel based alloys which have been used for turbine components of aircraft engines. These properties of CMCs have the potential to reduce the weight of turbine components and improve turbine thermal efficiency with a higher turbine inlet temperature (TIT). One of the technical issues of the CMC turbine vane is a relatively lower impact resistance than nickel based alloy turbine vanes. There are various previous works about impact resistance of CMCs, but there is little work that assumed actual engine conditions. The objective of this work was to verify the resistance of SiC/SiC CMC turbine vane to the impact phenomena that occur in the actual aircraft engine. The field damage survey was conducted on actual metal turbine vanes of commercial engines overhauled in IHI. The survey made it clear that the typical damage was less-than-0.127-mm-dent at the leading edge. In addition, the dropped weight impact test using the actual turbine airfoil which is made from a nickel based alloy was conducted at ambient temperature. The amount of energy required to make the dent of a certain size that was observed in actual metal turbine vanes was estimated. Then, the dropped weight impact test using the CMC test piece with a leading edge shape was conducted at the impact energy estimated by the metal turbine airfoil. The results showed that the failure mode of the CMC test piece was local damage with dents of a certain size and not a catastrophic failure mode. From this work, the damage to be assumed on CMC vane in actual aircraft engines was identified. As a future task, the effect of the damage to the fatigue capability of CMC turbine vanes needs to be investigated.

There is a growing interest for novel materials of dissimilar metals due to higher requirements needed for some critical engineering applications. In this research, different dissimilar weld joints of high strength low alloy (HSLA) and 316 austenitic stainless steel grades were successfully produced using shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process with 316L-16 and E7018 electrodes. Five variations of welding currents were employed within the specified range of each electrode. Other welding parameters such as heat inputs, welding speeds, weld sizes, arc voltages and time of welding were also varied. Specimens for different weld joint samples were subjected to microstructural studies using optical and scanning electron microscopes. The impact toughness test was also conducted on the samples using Izod impact testing machine. The analysis of the weld microstructures indicated the presence of type A and AF solidification patterns of austenitic stainless steels. The results further showed that the weld joints consolidated with E7018 electrode presented comparatively superior impact energy to the weldments fabricated by 316L-16 electrode. The optimum impact energy of E7018-weld joints (51J) was attained at higher welding heat inputs while that of 316L-16-weld joints (35J) was achieved at lower welding heat inputs, which are necessary requirements for the two electrodes used in the experiment. Hence, the dissimilar weld joints investigated could meet requirement for engineering application in offshore and other critical environments.Keywords—Dissimilar metal weld, heat input, impact toughness, microstructures

The beneficial effect of STF impregnation in enhancing the impact resistance of high-performance fabrics has been extensively reported in the literature. However, this research work reports that fabric structure has a decisive role in moderating the effectiveness of STF impregnation in terms of impact energy absorption. Plain woven fabrics having sett varying from 25 × 25 inch−1 to 55 × 55 inch−1 were impregnated with STF at two different padding pressures to obtain different add-ons. The impact energy absorption by STF impregnated loosely woven fabrics was found to be higher than that of their neat counterparts for both levels of add-on, while opposite trend was observed in case of tightly woven fabrics. Further, comparison of tightly woven plain, 2/2 twill, 3/1 twill and 2 × 2 matt fabrics revealed beneficial effect of STF impregnation, except for the plain woven fabric, establishing that there exists a fabric structure-STF impregnation interplay that tunes the impact resistance of woven fabrics.

The article to be presented will cover the whole process done in a fracture test for impact, taking into account the thermal treatment of the sample to be studied. The main objective of this article is to observe, verify, analyze and understand how the temperature difference of several samples influences the type and appearance of the fracture. The impact test have a great importance in industry, is through this that you can verify that the material is ideal for application in the production of equipment and vehicles that operate in high or low temperatures. The evaluation criteria of this trial are the energy absorbed by the sample, and the percentage of its characteristic lateral extension, and the percentage of fracture, ductile or fragile, and corresponding to a ductile fracture mode, in which the test at higher temperatures, the impact energy is relatively large, and fragile fracture mode, being one that as the temperature decreased, the impact energy will suffer decline. The most important result of the impact test is the measure of the energy absorbed by the test body to deform and break, measured by the variance of the gravitational potential energy of the hammer (machine component of the impact test) before and after impact. Therefore, providing the conclusion that the smaller the energy absorbed by the sample, more fragile it is depending on the temperature applied.

In high-speed gear drive and power transmission, system impact failure mode always occurs due to the sudden impact and shock loading during the system in running. Therefore, study on the amount of impact energy that can be absorbed by a gear is vital. Impact test equipment has been designed and modelled for the purpose to study the impact energy on gear tooth. This paper mainly focused on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of impact energy that occurred during simulation involving the impact test equipment modelling. The simulation was conducted using Abaqus software on critical parts of the test equipment to simulate the impact event and generate impact data for analysis. The load cell in the model was assumed to be free fall at a certain height which gives impact load to the test gear. Three different type of material for the test gear were set up in this simulation. Results from the simulation show that each material possesses different impact energy characteristic. Impact energy values increased along with the height of load drop. AISI 1040 were found to be the toughest material at 3.0m drop that could withstand up to 44.87N.m of impact energy. These data will be used to validate data in physical experiments in further study.

Ultra-high performance (UHP) concrete is a special type of fibrous cementitious composite that is characterized by high strength and superior ductility, toughness, and durability. This research aimed to investigate the resistance of ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) against repeated impacts. An adjusted repeated drop mass impact test was adopted to evaluate the impact performance of 72 UHPFRC disc specimens. The specimens were divided into six mixtures each of 12 discs. The only difference between the mixtures was the types of fibers used, while all other mixture components were the same. Three types of fibers were used: 6 mm micro-steel, 15 mm micro-steel, and polypropylene. All mixtures included 2.5% volumetric content of fibers, however with different combinations of the three fiber types. The test results showed that the mixtures with the 15 mm micro-steel fiber absorbed a higher number of impact blows until cracking compared to other mixtures. The mixture with pure 2.5% of 15 mm micro-steel fiber exhibited the highest impact resistance, with percentage increases over the other mixtures ranging from 25 to 140%. In addition, the Weibull distribution was used to investigate the cracking impact resistance of UHP at different levels of reliability.
