Purpose Noncommunicable diseases, prominently cancer, have become the second leading cause of death in the adult population of Ethiopia. A population-based cancer registry has been used in Addis Ababa (the capital city) since 2011. Availability of up-to-date estimates on cancer incidence is important in guiding the national cancer control program in Ethiopia. Methods We obtained primary data on 8,539 patients from the Addis Ababa population-based cancer registry and supplemented by data on 1,648 cancer cases collected from six Ethiopian regions. We estimated the number of the commonest forms of cancer diagnosed among males and females in Ethiopia and computed crude and age-standardized incidence rates. Results For 2015 in Ethiopia, we estimated that 21,563 (95% CI, 17,416 to 25,660) and 42,722 (95% CI, 37,412 to 48,040) incident cancer cases were diagnosed in males and females, respectively. The most common adult cancers were: cancers of the breast and cervix, colorectal cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, and cancers of the prostate, thyroid, lung, stomach, and liver. Leukemia was the leading cancer diagnosis in the pediatric age group (age 0 to 14 years). Breast cancer was by far the commonest cancer, constituting 33% of the cancers in women and 23% of all cancers identified from the Addis Ababa cancer registry. It was also the commonest cancer in four of the six Ethiopian regions included in the analysis. Colorectal cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma were the commonest malignancies in men. Conclusion Cancer, and more prominently breast cancer, poses a substantial public health threat in Ethiopia. The fight against cancer calls for expansion of population-based registry sites to improve quantifying the cancer burden in Ethiopia and requires both increased investment and application of existing cancer control knowledge across all segments of the Ethiopian population.

Many inequalities in cancer incidence exist between Nigeria and border countries. This information is absent or largely unavailable. Benin, Cameroun, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria cover a population of more than 224,922,000. Globocan data base supplied incidence for 132,939cases of cancer for these countries. The prevalence of Bladder, Colorectum, Kaposi sarcoma, Larynx, Leukaemia, Lip, oral cavity, Liver, Lungwas estimated for the year 2012.The prevalence of Nasopharynx, Non – Hodgkin, Lymphoma, Pancrease, Prostrate, Stomach combined was also estimated for the same year. The most common male cancer found in Nigeria and border countries is Prostate cancer, seconded by Liver. In this study also we found Breast cancer to be the most common in females, followed by Cervical Cancer. Larynx and Kaposi sarcoma are found to be the least common cancer for both males and females in the population. In conclusion, the findings of this study gave lights to some guidelines to aid the design of cancer control programs in Nigeria and border countries.  The spectrum of the cancers is dominated by the breast & Cervix uteri for females, while Prostate & Liver for males.

Abstract Context Acromegaly has been associated with increased risk of cancer morbidity and mortality, but research findings remain conflicting and population-based data are scarce. We therefore examined whether patients with acromegaly are at higher risk of cancer. Design A nationwide cohort study (1978 to 2010) including 529 acromegaly cases was performed. Incident cancer diagnoses and mortality were compared with national rates estimating standardized incidence ratios (SIRs). A meta-analysis of cancer SIRs from 23 studies (including the present one) was performed. Results The cohort study identified 81 cases of cancer after exclusion of cases diagnosed within the first year [SIR 1.1; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.9 to 1.4]. SIRs were 1.4 (95% CI, 0.7 to 2.6) for colorectal cancer, 1.1 (95% CI, 0.5 to 2.1) for breast cancer, and 1.4 (95% CI, 0.6 to 2.6) for prostate cancer. Whereas overall mortality was elevated in acromegaly (SIR 1.3; 95% CI, 1.1 to 1.6), cancer-specific mortality was not. The meta-analysis yielded an SIR of overall cancer of 1.5 (95% CI, 1.2 to 1.8). SIRs were elevated for colorectal cancer, 2.6 (95% CI, 1.7 to 4.0); thyroid cancer, 9.2 (95% CI, 4.2 to 19.9); breast cancer, 1.6 (1.1 to 2.3); gastric cancer, 2.0 (95% CI, 1.4 to 2.9); and urinary tract cancer, 1.5 (95% CI, 1.0 to 2.3). In general, cancer SIR was higher in single-center studies and in studies with <10 cancer cases. Conclusions Cancer incidence rates were slightly elevated in patients with acromegaly in our study, and this finding was supported by the meta-analysis of 23 studies, although it also suggested the presence of selection bias in some earlier studies.

AbstractBackgroundStrategies for breast cancer prevention are informed by assessing whether incidence differs by tumour biology. We describe temporal trends of breast cancer incidence by molecular subtypes in Scotland.MethodsPopulation-based cancer registry data on 72,217 women diagnosed with incident primary breast cancer from 1997 to 2016 were analysed. Age-standardised rates (ASR) and age-specific incidence were estimated by tumour subtype after imputing the 8% of missing oestrogen receptor (ER) status. Joinpoint regression and age- period- cohort models were used to assess whether significant differences were observed in incidence trends by ER status.ResultsER positive tumour incidence steadily increased particularly for women of screening age 50 to 69 years from 1997 till around 2011 (1.6%/year, 95%CI: 1.2 to 2.1). ER negative incidence decreased among all ages at a consistent rate of −0.7%/year (95%CI: −1.5, 0) from around 2000-2016. Compared to the 1941-1959 central birth cohort, women born 1912-1940 had lower incidence rate ratios (IRR) for ER+ tumours and women born 1960- 1986 had higher IRR for ER- tumours.ConclusionsWe show evidence of aetiologic heterogeneity of breast cancer. Future incidence and survival reporting should be monitored by molecular subtypes.

Aims and Background In the field of breast cancer control, obtaining population-based data on spontaneous mammography (MG) screening should be a priority. This study focuses on the breast cancer incidence and stage distribution in relation to MG use in Ravenna (Italy), 1987-88. Methods We estimated the MG rates, expected (E) incidence based on mortality data, observed (O) incidence, predicted excess incidence based on MG rates, observed excess incidence, and stage distribution according to the MG history. Results The highest MG rate (37%) was found among residents aged 40-44 but none of these had a T1a-bN0 breast cancer diagnosed nor was the predicted excess incidence demonstrated. Between 45 and 64 years, 80% of self-selected screenees had repeat (“incidence”) MG and the O:E incidence ratio was 1.32 (95% Cl 1.09-1.58). The observed excess incidence was 3.8-fold (95% Cl 2.56-5.16) greater than that predicted. Advanced (T2+ and/or N1+) cases accounted for 42% of patients diagnosed within 3 years of their last MG, for 55% of those diagnosed more than 3 years after their last MG, and for 70% of those with no previous MG. Above age 70, a significant worsening of stage at diagnosis was associated with a clear-cut drop in the proportion of breast cancer patients with previous self-referral for MG. Conclusions The results indicate that self-selection and its implications are major features of spontaneous screening practice.

The population-based cancer registry in the Thuathien Hue province was carry out by Hue Central Hospital. Objectives: To be determination the cancer incidence in the community, to contribute to assessement the cancer burden in the whole country and analyse the epidemiology characters of some popular cancers in this area. Method: The active registering procedure has been performed, the data were collected from 14 hospitals and disposed in the international classification for oncology (ICD-O3). The data was stored in the CANREG software version 4 and analysed in the EPI-INFO. Result: It is estimate that 7,324 new cancer cases were registered in the period 2001-2009 including 55.54% in males and 44.46% in females. There is 53.71% of cancer incidence were diagnosed by pathology of primary tumor. The crude rate is 123.9, the age -standardised rate is 173.5 per 100,000 inhabitants in males and females is 95.3, 103.9 respectively. The cancer of liver, stomach, lung, oral cavity and lymphoma non Hodgkin are leading cancers in males, specially the liver cancer rate is highest (34.8). The leading cancer in females are breast, stomach, cervix, lung and liver with the breast cancer rate is highest (21.7).The cancer diseases has increased after 40 years old in the Thua Thien Hue inhabitants, males increased rapidly than females and both gender came to the top of the age-specific rate at 70-75 years old.

Socioeconomic inequalities in cancer incidence are not well documented in southern Europe. We aim to study the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and colorectal, lung, and breast cancer incidence in Spain. We conducted a multilevel study using data from Spanish population-based cancer registries, including incident cases diagnosed for the period 2010–2013 in nine Spanish provinces. We used Poisson mixed-effects models, including the census tract as a random intercept, to derive cancer incidence rate ratios by SES, adjusted for age and calendar year. Male adults with the lowest SES, compared to those with the highest SES, showed weak evidence of being at increased risk of lung cancer (risk ratio (RR): 1.18, 95% CI: 0.94–1.46) but showed moderate evidence of being at reduced risk of colorectal cancer (RR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.74–0.97). Female adults with the lowest SES, compared to those with the highest SES, showed strong evidence of lower breast cancer incidence with 24% decreased risk (RR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.68–0.85). Among females, we did not find evidence of an association between SES and lung or colorectal cancer. The associations found between SES and cancer incidence in Spain are consistent with those obtained in other European countries.

Background: Cancer registry is an important tool for any successful cancer control program. The cancer-related data from Jordan was vague scarcity. This, urged scholars to set up the first and only population-based cancer registry in Jordan. Which did the Ministry of Health and the Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC) established it jointly. The registry started to collect data from cases of cancer referred to the treatment and diagnostic facilities throughout the country to improve cancer reporting in the country and define the size of the cancer problem and the pattern of cancer in Jordan; distribution of cancer by geographical locations; age; gender; type and cancer sites for both Jordanians and non-Jordanians. Strategy/Tactics: The Jordan Cancer Registry (JCR) collects cancer data in passive and active methods of case finding, the collected data coded by means of ICD_O3. Quality control measures applied, and the data stored and computerized using CanReg_4 and CanReg_5; then analyzed statistically. World standard population for age adjustment and standardization to facilitate national and international comparison and contrast. Outcomes: Incidence of the most common cancers among Jordanians, distributed by site, age, gender, and geographically for the period 2010-2014. The leading cancer among adults, males was colorectal (11.9%) followed by lung (11.7%), leukemia (9.1%), urinary bladder (8.9%) and prostate (8.1%). While among female cancers are breast (34.4%), colorectal (9.4%); leukemia (6.7%); lymphomas (5.8%) and thyroid (5.3%). Childhood cancers were about (4.9%) of all cancers; leukemia was 1st (34.8%) followed by brain and CNS (20.9%) and lymphomas (17.5%). Whereas the most recent mortality data showed lung is responsible for (21.03%) deaths among males followed by colorectal (11.0%) and leukemia (8.02%). Among females breast deaths (26.8%); colorectal (9.3%) and leukemia (7.2%). What was learned: Knowledge to action, based on the JCR data, Jordan started the Jordan Breast Cancer Program for early detection and screening of breast cancer. We are looking forward starting early detection for colorectal cancer soon.
