How to infer from uncontrolled data the numerical values of the parameters of an econometric model? In interwar econometrics, this problem of statistical induction was tackled in various ways. Wassily Leontief’s inter-industry method offers a case study of a nonprobabilistic approach to this problem of the statistical determination of a model’s parameter. Leontief was an outspoken critic of the probabilistic approach to econometrics and presented his interindustry device as an alternative. Focusing on his book published in 1941, The Structure of American Economy, 1929–1929, which gathered a decade of works since 1932, I show how it offered an original answer to the inferential problem of the parameters’ statistical determination. Between what Jan Tinbergen called, in the same period, the “historical method,” based on regression techniques applied to time series, and the “structural method,” relying on direct measures from cross-sectional data and controlled experiments, Leontief engaged in the latter in an ambitious project of “expansion of the field of direct observation.” This laid the statistical foundations of what he called the “direct induction” approach to empirical modeling.

The paper deals with an analysis of selected equations used for the determination of a stable longwise slope calculation of torrential rivers. Irregularity of the gradient, accompanied by heavy bed-load experiencing abrupt changes of the flow as a result of heavy rainfalls of short duration and high intensity, these are typical features impacting the behaviour and characteristics of torrential rivers. The determination of the stable bottom slope, when the river bed is kept unpaved but still provides resistence against harmfull effects of rapids, becomes an essential objective of the study. Three methods are used to determine the stable slope: the first is based on tangent tension (shear stress theory), the second observes a (critical) non-scouring cross-sectional velocity (critical mean channel velocities), and the third applies the bottom layer velocity, (the critical bed velocities). The mathematical hydraulic model HEC-RAS v. 3.1.3 has been used for the verification of the methods in the Jindřichovický creek case study in the Krušné hory.

Rolling noise from running trains is significantly influenced by the wheel–rail combined roughness and the dynamic properties of the track. To facilitate predictions of vibration and noise, it is desirable to be able to determine these parameters accurately from field measurements. In this study, an inverse method for the determination of these parameters is adopted and enhanced. A track model that is based on a wavenumber finite element model of the free rail coupled to discrete supports, which allows for the pinned–pinned mode and cross–sectional deformation of the rail, has been used. The rail vibration induced by hammer impacts and the vibration during train passages are simulated using this model, and these results are then applied to illustrate the accuracy of the direct and indirect methods for the estimation of track decay rate. These methods are compared in a case study for a ballasted track for which hammer impact and train pass–by measurements have been obtained. Other track parameters can also be extracted from the measured data by using the advanced track model. Thereafter, a more complete method is adopted to estimate the wheel–rail combined roughness from the measured rail vibration under train passages. A comparison is made among the estimated roughness levels obtained from this full method, an existing simplified method and the direct measurement method. It is found that the simplified method overestimates the roughness around the pinned–pinned resonance frequency, but gives a good estimation if the track decay rates of the loaded track are used.

It has been demonstrated that cross sections of bundles of hair can be effectively studied using image analysis. These studies can help to elucidate morphological differences of hair from one region of the body to another. The purpose of the present investigation was to use image analysis to determine whether morphological differences could be demonstrated between male and female human Caucasian terminal scalp hair.Hair samples were taken from the back of the head from 18 caucasoid males and 13 caucasoid females (Figs. 1-2). Bundles of 50 hairs were processed for cross-sectional examination and then analyzed using Prism Image Analysis software on a Macintosh llci computer. Twenty morphological parameters of size and shape were evaluated for each hair cross-section. The size parameters evaluated were area, convex area, perimeter, convex perimeter, length, breadth, fiber length, width, equivalent diameter, and inscribed radius. The shape parameters considered were formfactor, roundness, convexity, solidity, compactness, aspect ratio, elongation, curl, and fractal dimension.

A novel method was developed for the determination of linting propensity of paper based on printing with an IGT printability tester and image analysis of the printed strips. On average, the total fraction of the surface removed as lint during printing is 0.01%-0.1%. This value is lower than those reported in most laboratory printing tests, and more representative of commercial offset printing applications. Newsprint paper produced on a roll/blade former machine was evaluated for linting propensity using the novel method and also printed on a commercial coldset offset press. Laboratory and commercial printing results matched well, showing that linting was higher for the bottom side of paper than for the top side, and that linting could be reduced on both sides by application of a dry-strength additive. In a second case study, varying wet-end conditions were used on a hybrid former machine to produce four paper reels, with the goal of matching the low linting propensity of the paper produced on a machine with gap former configuration. We found that the retention program, by improving fiber fines retention, substantially reduced the linting propensity of the paper produced on the hybrid former machine. The papers were also printed on a commercial coldset offset press. An excellent correlation was found between the total lint area removed from the bottom side of the paper samples during laboratory printing and lint collected on halftone areas of the first upper printing unit after 45000 copies. Finally, the method was applied to determine the linting propensity of highly filled supercalendered paper produced on a hybrid former machine. In this case, the linting propensity of the bottom side of paper correlated with its ash content.

Malaria is one of the health problems in Indonesia, especially West Sumatra. Determination of the description of Malaria disease in an area is needed to determine the spread and severity of the disease. This study aims to determine the frequency distribution according to age, sex and place of residence, description of the types of Plasmodium causes of Malaria and hematological features in Malaria patients at Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018. This type of research is a descriptive observational study with an approach or design cross section (cross sectional). The frequency distribution of Malaria sufferers in Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018 according to the highest age was in the age group 21-30 years as many as 28 cases (36.8%), the highest sex among men was 46 (60.5%) and the highest number of residences was found in Koto Tangah sub-district there were 31 cases (40.8%). The type of Plasmodium found in Malaria cases in Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018 was P. vivax (73 cases (96.05%)) and P. falciparum (3 cases (3.95%)). The results of laboratory tests on Hb, hematocrit, platelet and leukocyte levels in Malaria positive patients in Siti Rahmah Padang Hospital in 2018 were in the normal range.

The paper presents solutions to the direct and inverse problems on longitudinal vibrations of a rod with a variable cross-sectional area. The law of variation of the cross-sectional area is modeled as an exponential function of a polynomial of degree n . The method for reconstructing this function is based on representing the fundamental system of solutions of the direct problem in the form of a Maclaurin series in the variables x and λ. Examples of solutions for various section functions and various boundary conditions are given. It is shown that to recover n unknown coefficients of a polynomial, n eigenvalues are required, and the solution is dual. An unambiguous solution was obtained only for the case of elastic fixation at one of the rod’s ends. The numerical estimation of the method error was made using input data noise. It is shown that the error in finding the variable crosssectional area is less than 1% with the error in the eigenvalues of longitudinal vibrations not exceeding 0.0001.

Abstract In this paper, two failure analysis case studies are presented to demonstrate the importance of sample preparation procedures to successful failure analyses. Case study 1 establishes that Palladium (Pd) cannot be used as pre-FIB coating for SiO2 thickness measurement due to the spontaneously Pd silicide formation at the SiO2/Si interface. Platinum (Pt) is thus recommended, in spite of the Pt/SiO2 interface roughness, as the pre-FIB coating in this application. In the second case study, the dual-directional TEM inspection method is applied to characterize the profile of the “invisible” tungsten residue defect. The tungsten residue appears invisible in the planeview specimen due to the low mass-thickness contrast. It is then revealed in the cross-sectional TEM inspection.

The paper deals with the issues related to the pollution of aquatic ecosystems. The influence of turbulence on the transport and dispersion of pollutants in the mentioned systems, as well as the calculation of the turbulent diffusion coefficients are studied. A case study on the determination of turbulent diffusion coefficients for some sectors of the Prut River is presented. A new method is proposed for the determination of the turbulent diffusion coefficients in the pollutant transport equation for specific sectors of a river, according to the associated number of P�clet, calculated for each specific area: the left bank, the right bank and the middle of the river.
