Constituents of Bull Seminal Plasma

1. The concentrations of the main inorganic and certain organic constituents of bull seminal plasma have been examined. The average concentrations, in mg./100 ml., were: Sodium 258 Chloride 175 Potassium 172 Citrate 620 Calcium 37 Fructose 460 Magnesium 8 Total N 877 Iron 2 Total P 57 2. Sodium and potassium were found to be inversely correlated, r= -0.86, p<0.001. 3. Calcium, chloride, fructose, citrate and total nitrogen were also strongly correlated (p<0.001), in such a way that a knowledge of the concentration of any one of the constituents enabled the average concentration of the other four in the sample to be predicted with considerable accuracy. 4. Sodium, potassium and chloride were estimated by standard chemical methods and with the flame photometer (sodium and potassium) and by electrometric titration (chloride). The applicability of the alternative methods of estimation, which require very small quantities of seminal plasma, has been examined and is discussed. 5. The freezing-point depression, Δ, of bull seminal plasma was -0.533, standard error of mean, 0.005. 6. The Δ's of a number of laboratory and field diluents were also examined; with two exceptions they were found to vary markedly from Δ for bull seminal plasma.

A controversial precept of aquatic ecology asserts that low ratios of nitrogen to phosphorus (N:P) lead to noxious and sometimes toxic blooms of Cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria dominance is a major risk to human and ecosystem health. The stoichiometric control of Cyanobacteria therefore has become central to freshwater resource management. This controversial concept is based on observed Cyanobacteria dominance in lakes with low N:P and the results of lab and field experiments. Here we analyze data from 99 of the temperate zone's most studied lakes and show that this model is flawed. We show that the risk of water quality degradation by Cyanobacteria blooms is more strongly correlated with variation in total P, total N, or standing algae biomass than the ratio of N:P. Risks associated with Cyanobacteria are therefore less associated with N:P ratios than a simple increase in nutrient concentrations and algal biomass.

This research carried out in Huong Vinh commune, Huong Tra town, Thua Thien Hue province aimed to identify types of land use and soil characteristics. Results showed that five crops are found in Huong Vinh commune including rice, peanut, sweet potato, cassava and vegetable. There are two major soil orders with four soil suborders classified by FAO in Huong Vinh commune including Fluvisols (Dystric Fluvisols<em>, </em>Gleyic Fluvisols and Cambic Fluvisols) and Arenosols (Haplic Arenosols). The results from soil analysis showed that three soil suborders including Dystric Fluvisols<em>, </em>Gleyic Fluvisols and Cambic Fluvisols belonging to Fluvisols were clay loam in texture, low pH, low in OC, total N, total P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> and total K<sub>2</sub>O. Meanwhile, the Haplic Arenosols was loamy sand in texture, poor capacity to hold OC, total N, total P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> and total K<sub>2</sub>O

The changes in the membrane permeability to sodium, potassium, and chloride ions as well as the changes in the intracellular concentration of these ions were studied on frog sartorius muscles in Ca-free EDTA solution. It was found that the rate constants for potassium and chloride efflux became almost constant within 10 minutes in the absence of external calcium ions, that for potassium increasing to 1.5 to 2 times normal and that for chloride decreasing about one-half. The sodium influx in Ca-free EDTA solution, between 30 and 40 minutes, was about 4 times that in Ringer's solution. The intracellular sodium and potassium contents did not change appreciably but the intracellular chloride content had increased to about 4 times normal after 40 minutes. By applying the constant field theory to these results, it was concluded that (a) PCl did not change appreciably whereas PK decreased to a level that, in the interval between 10 and 40 minutes, was about one-half normal, (b) PNa increased until between 30 and 40 minutes it was about 8 times normal. The low value of the membrane potential between 30 and 40 minutes was explained in terms of the changes in the membrane permeability and the intracellular ion concentrations. The mechanism for membrane depolarization in this solution was briefly discussed.

The vertical and diurnal variation of nitrogen and phosphorus forms, as well as that of soluble reactive silica (SRS), were studied in four sampling days at Garças reservoir, a shallow tropical one located in the city of São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil. Except for N-NH4, all other inorganic forms of nitrogen (N-NO2, N-NO3, and total N) demonstrated decreased concentrations toward the bottom of reservoir. Similarly, all showed significant diurnal differences on every sampling day, with increased values during the night due to absence of photosynthetic assimilation during that period. In the sampling days, these forms decreased on the spring sampling day due to the bloom of Microcystis registered during this period of the year. All three forms of phosphorus (SRP, particulate P, and total P) showed significant vertical variation, except on the fall sampling day. On the summer sampling day there was an increase of both total P and particulate P, the latter because it constitutes more than 70% of the total P during all sampling days. Hourly phosphorus variation was significant during all sampling days, except for the summer one. The SRS vertical variation was significant during all sampling days, except for that in the spring. It was also different hourly on sampling days.

The contribution of peripheral arterial chemoreceptors to cardiovascular and renal responses to acute hypocapnic hypoxia is currently not well understood. We compared the effects of normobaric hypoxia on mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), heart rate, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), renal blood flow (RBF), and renal volume and electrolyte excretion in conscious unilaterally nephrectomized carotid body-denervated (n = 10) and sham-operated (n = 10) control rats. Thirty minutes of normobaric hypoxia (12.5% O2) resulted in significant reductions in arterial PO2 and PCO2 as well as decreases in MABP, GFR, RBF, and renal sodium, potassium, and water excretion. These effects occurred more rapidly and/or were significantly more pronounced in carotid body-denervated than in sham-operated rats. These data indicate that moderate acute hypocapnic hypoxia has profound effects on systemic and renal hemodynamics as well as on renal excretory function in conscious rats. We conclude that stimulation of the peripheral arterial chemoreceptors can partially offset the hypoxia-induced decreases in MABP, RBF, GFR, urine flow, and urinary sodium and potassium excretion, thereby helping to maintain cardiovascular as well as fluid and electrolyte homeostasis.

1. The effects of synthetic human and rat atrial peptides on sodium and potassium ion transport has been investigated in intact human erythrocytes. 2. The effects of these peptides have been tested on the active, sodium pump-dependent (ouabain-sensitive) and on the sodium-potassium cotransport system (bumetanide-sensitive) with 86Rb used as a tracer. 3. Human (α-ANP, 28 amino acids) or rat (atriopeptin III) atrial peptides, over a wide range of concentrations, did not influence the uptake of 86Rb in either the ouabain-sensitive or the bumetanide-sensitive transport system. 4. These results suggest that the natriuretic effect of the atrial peptides is not mediated through inhibition of the sodium pump or the loop-diuretic-sensitive Na-K cotransport.

The soil physical and chemical properties of four densities (A:2500/hm2,B:3300/hm2,C:4400/hm2,D:6600/hm2) of hybrid Larch plantations, Larix olgensis plantation(E) and Quercus mandsurica forest(F) were studied in Jiangshanjiao forest farm of Heilongjiang province of China. Soil bulk density, soil porosity, total N, total P, available N and available P were affected significantly by plantation density in hybrid Larch plantations. The lowest surface soil bulk density was in density 2500/hm2. Soil porosity of density 2500/hm2and 3300/hm2was bigger than that of density 4400/hm2and density 6600/hm2. Total N, total P and available N of density 4400/hm2and 3300/hm2were higher than that of density 6600/hm2and density 2500/hm2. Total N, total P, available N and available P of hybrid Larch plantations were not lower than that of Larix olgensis plantation. The results of the soil physical and chemical properties under different densities of hybrid Larch plantations and different types of forest seems to confirm that hybrid Larch plantation did not decreased the soil fertility, and the hybrid Larch plantation with densities of 3300/hm2and 4400/hm2could be conductive to improving the soil quality. The results would provide the theories basis for manage the hybrid Larch plantations.

Abstract Background: Understanding the effect of pre-analytical factors is important for data quality of bio-specimens and health status. The study examines the effect of 9-days fluid intake and 2-time sampling on concentration changes of 7-Urine and 17-Blood variables. Material and Method: SPSS software v23.0 applies to data processing. The group of 23 healthy subjects divide based on water intake and gender. Results: A statistically significant difference(p<0.01) between 1st/2nd sampling is confirmed for Freezing point depression, Sodium, Potassium, Creatinine Urea and Urate in Urine and Urea, Urate, Glucose, Hematocrit, Thrombocyte in Blood. The difference between water intake after 1st sampling is confirmed (p<0.01) for Freezing point depression, Sodium, Urate and(p<0.05) for Potassium(p<0.05), Chloride(p<0.05), Creatinine(p<0.05), Urate, Urea in Urine and Potassium(p<0.01) and Chloride(p<0.05) in Blood. Difference between gender exists for Urea(p<0.05) in Urine after 2nd sampling and Urate(P<0.01), Glucose(p<0.01/0.05), Ht(p<0.01/0.05) after 1st and 2nd sampling and MCHC(p<0.01) after 2nd sampling in Blood samples.Conclusion: Water intake increases blood and urine biomarker range after sampling.

Abstract Background Rice paddy wetlands may serve as a nutrient source or sink in agricultural ecosystems. However, the pattern of nutrient loss on a large scale is not clear. A year-round on-site observation study based on 6 h intervals was conducted. Rainfall, temperature, runoff nutrient concentrations, and adjacent stream water samples were automatically monitored to uncover the temporal changes in the runoff losses of the main nutrient proxies (total N and total P) from a typical rice-planting area (120 ha) in the Yangtze river delta region of China.Results A high total N concentration in the rice-planting area was observed during the rice-planting season; however, a larger fluctuation in the total P was evident throughout the year. The Δtotal N (drainage minus stream) parameter showed negative values with a mean of −0.25 mg L −1 , while Δtotal P showed positive values with a mean of 0.06 mg L −1 . The window phases for the total N loss are mainly concentrated in the rice-growing season. However, the window phase for the total P loss was more dispersive throughout the year. No clear relationships were found between rainfall and N and P concentrations by self-organizing map analysis.Conclusions This high-resolution monitoring suggested that nutrient loss loading, rather than nutrient concentration, was strongly related to runoff depth, and the avoidance of fertilization before high-intensity rainfall could mitigate the nutrient runoff losses and maintain the rice wetland eco-function.
