A retrospective study of an outbreak of dermatophilosis in a dairy cattle farm of 40 cows, 12 heifers, 15 bullocks and 10 newborn calves, in the area of Thessaloniki, is presented. To our knowledge this is the first time such an outbreak has been reported in Greece. In 62 of the 77 animals (80.5%) the characteristic skin lesions of the chronic form of the disease were found. None of the bullocks, which did not have access to the open yard, were clinically affected. The disease first appeared in the farm soon after a tractor had been used to dispose the manure from the yard. The mildly painful lesions, involving various parts of the hairy and glabrous skin, were characterized by dry and thick crusts, erythema, hyperpigmentation, erosions and alopecia. Due to the chronic nature of the disease, diagnosis was based on the clinical appearance and skin histopathology, where the organisms were demonstrated with difficulty within the keratin of the crusts, appearing as chains of two parallel rows of coccoid cells. Clinical resolution occurred within a few weeks after one injection of long-acting Oxytetracycline. No recurrence of the disease has ever been reported. Despite the zoonotic potential of dermatophilosis, none of the people who had been in contact with the infected cattle developed skin lesions.

As a result of the study, new knowledge was obtained for the first time about the effect of the FXI locus polymorphism on the quality of reproduction in dairy cattle, the degree of influence of the FXI polymorphism on the frequency of development of pathologies of the reproductive organs, their clinical manifestation in individuals - carriers of the anomaly and healthy animals was established. The influence of the FXI locus polymorphism on embryonic and postembryonic mortality, clinical condition and safety of newborn calves in comparison with individuals without a genetic defect was determined.

Study abroad begins long before students leave their own shores. The moment that children enter daycare, nursery school, or kindergarten for the first time, they are in foreign territory, and all their antennae are out, testing, absorbing, learning. They begin to develop the first of their many multiple identities. They are no longer "Johnny" or "Sarah" whom everyone knows and loves at home, but Johnny or Sarah whom no one knows nor initially cares about, and they have to figure out what kind of a new identity they will develop so the danger zone becomes as safe as home.  Leaving familiar surroundings- the sounds, smells, safety, and food of home- and realizing, quite abruptly, that they must learn to adapt to the demands and needs of strangers, is the first and the most challenging "trip abroad" they will ever take. They will use the same set of skills, more mature, more polished (we hope) when they arrive on a foreign campus and move in with a host family or into an international dormitory.  Learning to make the journey with ease, whether it is on the first day of school or the day a plane drops one in a foreign field, is a necessary accomplishment. We have to make friends out of our peers; we have to gain the respect of our teachers; we have to develop curiosity and concern about the people around us. The stranger they seem, the more there is to learn. To fear diversity is to fear life itself. As the world becomes smaller and more integrated, the more crucial this accomplishment grows.

Purpose: to determine whether pre-surgical treatment using long-acting somatostatin analogues (SSAs) may improve surgical outcomes in acromegaly. Methods: retrospective study of 48 patients with acromegaly operated by endoscopic transsphenoidal approach and for first time. Surgical remission was evaluated based on the 2010 criteria. Results: most patients, 83.3% (n = 40), harbored macroadenomas and 31.3% (n = 15) invasive pituitary adenomas. In this case, 14 patients were treated with lanreotide LAR and 6 with octreotide LAR, median monthly doses of 97.5 [range 60–120] and 20 [range 20–30] mg, respectively, for at least 3 months preoperatively. Presurgical variables were comparable between pre-treated and untreated patients (p > 0.05). Surgical remission was more frequent in those pre-treated with monthly doses ≥90 mg of lanreotide or ≥30 mg of octreotide than in untreated or pre-treated with lower doses (OR = 4.64, p = 0.025). However, no differences were found between pre-treated and untreated patients when lower doses were included or between those treated for longer than 6 months compared to those untreated or pre-treated for shorter than 6 months. Similarly, no differences were found either in terms of surgical or endocrine complications (OR = 0.65, p = 0.570), independently of the doses and the duration of SSA treatment (p > 0.05). Conclusions: the dose of SSAs is a key factor during pre-surgical treatment, since the beneficial effects in surgical remission were observed with monthly doses equal or higher than 90 mg of lanreotide and 30 mg of octreotide, but not with lower doses.

In May 2009, the Arikara returned to the land of their ancestors along the Missouri River in South Dakota. For the first time in more than a half century, a Medicine Lodge was built for ceremony. The lodge has returned from its dormant state to regain its permanent place in Arikara culture. This event will be remembered as a significant moment in the history of the Arikara because it symbolizes a new beginning and hope for the people. Following this historic event, Arikara spiritual leader Jasper Young Bear offered to share his experience and deep insight into Arikara thought: You have to know that the universe is the Creator's dream, the Creator's mind, everything from the stars all the way to the deepest part of the ocean, to the most microscopic particle of the creation, to the creation itself, on a macro level, on a micro level. You have to understand all of those aspects to understand what the lodge represents. The lodge is a fractal, a symbolic representation of the universe itself. How do we as human beings try to make sense of that? That understanding, of how the power in the universe flows, was gifted to us through millennia of prayer and cultural development… It is important for us to internalize our stories, internalize the star knowledge, internalize those things and make that your way, make that your belief, because we're going to play it out inside the lodge. It only lives by us guys interacting with it and praying with it and bringing it to life… We're going to play out the wise sayings of the old people… So you see that it's an Arikara worldview. A learning process of how the universe functions is what you're actually experiencing [inside the Medicine Lodge]. What the old people were describing was the functioning of how we believed the universe behaves. And we had a deep, deep understanding of what that meant and how it was for us. So that's what you're actually seeing in the Medicine Lodge.

Abstrak. Suatu penelitian telah dilaksanakan di desa Suka Mulya, Kecamatan Lembah Seulawah, Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Penelitian berlangsung dari bulan November sampai Desember 2016. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kondisi faali sapi Peranakan Fries Holland (PFH) di peternakan rakyat desa Suka Mulya Kecamatan Lembah Seulawah Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Metode penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif analitis dengan mengunakan metode survei dan observasi langsung ke peternak dan sapi perah PFH. Lokasi penelitian ditentukan secara purposive sampling. Penetapan responden ditentukan mengunakan metode random sampling, jumlah responden sebanyak 10 peternak yang memelihara sapi perah. Materi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 13 ekor sapi perah PFH. Parameter penelitian meliputi frekuensi pernafasan, denyut jantung dan suhu rektal. Data pendukung yang diperlukan dalam penelitian ini meliputi suhu dan kelembaban kandang, manajemen pemeliharaan sapi perah, kesehatan ternak, dan karakteristik peternak/responden. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rataan frekuensi pernafasan sapi PFH adalah28,03 ± 0,63 kali/menit, frekuensi denyut jantung 68,92 ± 0,71  kali/menit dan suhu rektal 36,57 ± 0,55 °C. Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa kondisi faali/fisiologis ternak perah yang ada di peternakan Rakyat Desa Suka Mulya dalam keadaan baik/normal. Study on Condition of Dairy Cattle Breed Physiologic Fries Holland (PFH) Livestock in the Village People Prefer Mulya Seulawah Valley District District of Aceh Aceh Province Abstract. This study aimed to determine the effect of dairy cattle rearing system to physiological conditions in the district of Aceh Besar district seulawah Valley. The method used is descriptive analysis using the method of survey and direct observation to farmers and dairy cows PFH measurement of physiological conditions/physiological. This research by using two stages, the first stage is the observation field conditions and the second stage is the collection of data. Observation phase field conditions to determine the location of the study and the sample size, the data collection phase aims to obtain primary data and secondary data. The research location determined by purposive Desa Suka Mulya. Sampling of cattle that took cattle PFH to measure physiologic conditions/physiological. The number of samples taken in this study there are few dairy cows. The data collected from these samples include respiratory rate, heart rate, rectal temperature. Results of this study was the frequency of breathing 28,03 ± 0,63 times per minute, heart rate 68,92 ± 0,71 times per minute, a rectal temperature of 36,57 ± 0,55 times per minute. From the results of this research can be concluded that the physiologic conditions/physiological dairy cattle farm in the village of Suka Mulya People in a good state/normal

Introduction: Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is one of the most economically significant diseases in the bovine industry causing losses due to diarrhea, reproductive disorders, immunosuppression and mortalities. The aim of our investigation was to detect and subtype BVDV from calves on two dairy cattle and two buffalo farms in Ismailia province, Egypt as an indicator of BVDV infection status in the province. Methodology: A total of 298 blood samples were collected and tested using an optimized one-step, real-time multiplex Taqman-based RT-PCR. All the positive samples by the multiplex real-time RT-PCR were tested using conventional RT-PCR to amplify multiple areas of the genome for further phylogenetic analysis and subtyping. Results: Thirty one (10.4%) of the tested samples were positive for BVDV-1. Only three samples, all from a single dairy cattle farm, had enough viral RNA to be amplified by RT-PCR. The PCR products were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis revealed detection of BVDV-1b. The detected strain is closely related to worldwide BVDV-1b strains, making it difficult to trace its origin. Nucleotide and amino acid alignments of the E2 glycoprotein region of the detected strain with other BVDV-1b strains showed high divergence, with identity ranging from 81.3% to 93.6% and 85.3% to 93.6%, respectively. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first report describing the circulation of BVDV-1b in Egyptian dairy cattle populations.

One of the most discussed issues in the design community is the performance gap. In this research, we investigate for the first time whether part of the gap might be caused by the modelling literacy of design teams. A total of 108 building modellers were asked to comment on the importance of obtaining and using accurate values for 21 common modelling input variables, from U-values to occupancy schedules when using dynamic simulation to estimate annual energy demand. The questioning was based on a real building for which high-resolution energy, occupancy and temperature data were recorded. A sensitivity analysis was then conducted using a model of the building (based on the measured data) by perturbing one parameter in each simulation. The effect of each perturbation on the annual energy consumption given by the model was found and a ranked list generated. The order of this list was then compared to that given by the modellers for the same changes in the parameters. A correlation analysis indicated little correlation between which variables were thought to be important by the modellers and which proved to be objectively important. k-means cluster analysis identified subgroups of modellers and showed that 25% of the people tested were making judgements that appeared worse than a person responding at random. Follow-up checks showed that higher level qualifications, or having many years of experience in modelling, did not improve the accuracy of people’s predictions. In addition, there was no correlation between modellers, with many ranking some parameters as important that others thought irrelevant. Using a three-part definition of literacy, it is concluded that this sample of modellers, and by implication the population of building modellers, cannot be considered modelling literate. This indicates a new cause of the performance gap. The results suggest a need and an opportunity for both industry and universities to increase their efforts with respect to building physics education, and if this is done, a part of the performance gap could be rapidly closed. Practical application: In any commercial simulation, the modeller will have to decide which parameters must be included and which might be ignored due to lack of time and/or data, and how much any approximations might perturb the results. In this paper, the judgment of 108 modellers was compared against each other. The results show that the internal mental models of thermal modellers disagree with one another, and disagree with the results of a validated thermal model. The lessons learnt will be of great utility to modellers, and those educating the next generation of modellers.

By the 1930s few Catholics in the United States could have been unaware of their church's absolute prohibition on contraception. A widely-publicized papal encyclical had spoken to the issue in 1930, even as various Protestant churches were for the first time giving a public blessing to the practice of birth control in marriage. Growing numbers of American Catholics had been exposed since at least 1920 to frank and vigorous preaching on the subject in the context of parish missions. (Missions are probably best understood as the Catholic analogue of a revival.) And by the early 1930s Catholic periodicals and pamphlets addressed the question of birth control more frequently and directly than ever before. As a Chicago Jesuit acknowledged in 1933, “Practically every priest who is close to the people admits that contraception is the hardest problem of the confessional today.” A major depression accounted in part for the hardness of the problem. But it was more fundamentally caused by the laity's heightened awareness of their church's stance on birth control and their growing consciousness of this position as a defining attribute of Catholic identity.
