This chapter is drawn from a PhD study that employedStudent Team’sAchievement Divisions as a learning technique to enhance learners’ intrinsic motivation inTechnology Education within a South African multicultural school. The authors over the years observed learners’ actions, and interactions in Technology classes and realised that some of the learners find it difficult to engage in behaviour that arises within themselves -an aspect known as intrinsic motivation. Most learners in the Technology class, registered no concerns in obtaining low scores or failing the subject. However, a minority of the learner population obtained high achievement scores and maintained interest throughout lessons. This study explored the development of the ZPD in a cooperative learning context. The authorsusedSTAD, as a cooperative learning technique, in motivating learners intrinsically to increase their participation in class activities. The study explored STAD in1) closing the gap between pedagogy and content knowledge, and 2) intrinsically motivating learners to develop high levels of achievement in the subject of Technology. This study employed the Bricolage design in gathering data from two Grade eight Technology classes over a six-month period. The findings indicated that the learning environment cultivated learners’ development, curiosity, and positive attitude toward Technology.

Physics for medical students is perceived as a sophisticated subject. The sophistication, however, does not lie in the physics concepts themselves or students’ comprehension of the subject, but it is more often related to the ineffectiveness of techniques applied to teach the subject. This study investigates the effect of the Jigsaw technique, a highly structured form of cooperative learning, on the academic achievement of first-year medical students in learning physics. A quasi-experimental research approach with a pretest-posttest design was employed to conduct the study with a purposive randomly selected sample of fifty students made up of twenty-five students in the control group and twenty-five students in the experimental group. The control group was taught using traditional lectures, while the experimental group was taught using the Jigsaw technique which involved students working actively to map the concepts of nuclear radiation in diagnosis and therapy. A comprehensive statistical analysis, which included a Shapiro’s test, paired sample t-test, independent sample t-test, average gain factor, and size effect calculations, was used to test the research hypotheses. The findings of this study showed that there was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between the post-test scores of students exposed to the Jigsaw cooperative learning technique and those who were not. In addition, it was deduced by the educator (first author) that the students were actively engaged with the topic material, took more responsibility for their performance in the activity, learned how to map the radiation physics concepts, and explored a new learning environment that enabled them to use their higher-order thinking skills to solve medical physics problems.

The background of this study was the low student learning outcomes of PPKn, from 28 students who achievedthe completeness criteria at least only 11 students (39.29%). The low student learning outcomes are caused bythe high level of individuality between students so that the achievement of competence among studentsexperiences a very distant difference. Based on this, the researchers made improvements to student learningoutcomes through the application of STAD cooperative learning models. This research is a classroom actionresearch, with the subject of class VII of SMP Negeri 3 Teluk Kuantan. The data used in this study is PPKnlearning outcomes data. The results stated that after applying the STAD type cooperative learning model studentlearning outcomes had increased in the initial data the number of students who completed were 11 students, incycle I had an increase with the number of 18 students, and in cycle II the number of students who completedcontinued to increase by the number 22 student.

Peer instruction is a cooperative-learning technique that promotes critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Benson's think-pair-share and Mazur's peer-instruction techniques are simple cooperative exercises that promote student's participation in class and increase student's interaction with each other and with the instructor in a large classroom. We borrowed concepts from Benson and Mazur and applied these concepts to enhance student involvement during the respiratory component of the medical physiology class. The medical physiology class consisted of 256 first-year medical students. The peer-instruction technique was used for 10 classes. Each class of 50 min was divided into three or four short presentations of 12-20 min. Each presentation was followed by a one-question, multiple-choice quiz on the subject discussed. Questions ranged from simple recall to those testing complex intellectual activities. Students were given 1 min to think and to record their first answer. Subsequently, students were allowed 1 min to discuss their answers with their classmates and possibly correct their first response. The percentage of correct answers increased significantly (P < 0.05) after discussion for both recall and intellectual questions. These data demonstrate that pausing three to four times during a 50-min class to allow discussion of concepts enhanced the students level of understanding and ability to synthesize and integrate material.

AbstractThis research is based on the low outcomes of class XI students on their chemistry subject. Therefore, the experiment research by pretest and posttest to discover the effect of cooperative learning model of Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) by using Handout toward learning outcomes of State Senior High School 1 Kampar on salt hydrolysis is conducted. The subject of this research is the students of class XI Mia in 2015-2016 year by using 2 classroom samples: XI Mia 1 (exsperiment) dan XI Mia 4 (control). The data was collected by using observation, initial test (homogeneity), final test (pretest and postest), and documentation. To discover the effect of the model on learning outcomes, the formula of Kp is applied. The effect differences are analyzed by t-test sampel related. The analysis result of initial and final data is t-counting = 2.325 and t-table = 1,68 in the significant rate of 5%. The value of t-counting > t-table, therefore, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This shows that there is the effect of cooperative learning model of Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) by using handout toward learning outcomes of State Senior High School 1 Kampar on salt hydrolysis by the effect as much as 7.8%.  Key words:      Learning outcomes, model learning model of STAD, salt hydrolysis
