This is the second in a series of NACADA Journal articles that report on the results of the ACT Fifth National Academic Advising Survey. Collected data are analyzed to determine the performance of Habley's seven advising models on eight advising program goals and their perceived effectiveness on 11 program variables. The data also create the context for a deeper consideration of the relationship between an advising model and an institutional culture.

While there is no direct causal link between academic advising and increased student persistence, the role of the academic advisor can be key to an institution's success. This chapter examines one university's approach to redesigning the academic advising model from the ground up and committing to a philosophy of continuous improvement in academic advising, retention and student success. A decade in the making, the tools and approaches created through this process now play an important part in the institution's success and can be a road-map for other institutions to follow as they aspire to revise and improve their academic advising models and to improve student success.

Research has shown that perceived group status positively predicts competence stereotypes but does not positively predict warmth stereotypes. The present study identified circumstances in which group status positively predicts both warmth and competence judgments. Students (N = 86) rated one of two groups (psychologists vs. engineers) presented as either being low or high in social status on warmth and competence. Results showed that status positively predicted competence stereotypes for both groups, but warmth stereotypes only for psychologists, for whom warmth traits are perceived to be functional in goal achievement. Moreover, for psychologists perceived warmth mediated the relationship between status and perceived competence. Results are discussed in terms of the contextual malleability of the relationship between perceived status, warmth, and competence.

This study aimed to systematically review research investigating the association between hip muscle strength and dynamic knee valgus (DKV). Four databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus) were searched for journal articles published from inception to October 2020. Seven studies investigating the association between hip muscle strength and DKV using a two-dimensional motion analysis system in healthy adults were included. The relationship between hip abductor muscle strength and DKV was negatively correlated in two studies, positively correlated in two studies, and not correlated in three studies. The DKV was associated with reduced hip extensor muscle strength in two studies and reduced hip external rotator muscle strength in two studies, while no correlation was found in three and five studies for each muscle group, respectively. The relationship between hip muscle strength, including abductors, extensors, and external rotators and DKV is conflicting. Considering the current literature limitations and variable methodological approaches used among studies, the clinical relevance of such findings should be interpreted cautiously. Therefore, future studies are recommended to measure the eccentric strength of hip muscles, resembling muscular movement during landing. Furthermore, high-demand and sufficiently challenging functional tasks revealing lower limb kinematic differences, such as cutting and jumping tasks, are recommended for measuring the DKV.

Marketing curricula are experiencing a digital disruption as e-books and other electronic educational resources replace print textbooks. This study investigates student perceptions about the effectiveness of print textbooks and e-books. Specifically, we focus on the perceived effectiveness of e-books and the impact on student engagement. A field-based quasi-experiment was conducted with a sample of 259 students in the Fall semester, and a follow-up sample of 395 students in the Spring semester. The results show a diverse impact of e-books on student engagement. Some aspects of engagement are positively affected while other aspects of student engagement exhibit a neutral or negative leaning impact. The findings also reflect significant variation in e-book effectiveness depending on the course. Finally, we find that e-books moderate the relationship between textbook effectiveness and academic performance engagement. Highly effective e-books result in higher levels of academic performance engagement. Collectively these findings shed light on the current situation and provide a foundation for additional research to further our understanding about e-book effectiveness and its relationship to student engagement.

A total of 52 schools participated in the Experimental Implementation Phase of the Project P.A.T.H.S. After completion of the Tier 1 Program, 8,057 students responded to a Subjective Outcome Evaluation Form (Form A) to assess their views of the program, instructors, and perceived effectiveness of the program. Based on the schools' evaluation reports, results of secondary data analyses on four open-ended questions showed that: (a) students felt that they had learned things at the personal, interpersonal, familial, and societal levels; (b) they appreciated the program design, instructors' performance, learning process, and program effectiveness; (c) they generally had positive comments on instructors’ attitude and teaching process; and (d) they made some suggestions on how the program and its implementation could be improved. The present study, based on qualitative data of subjective outcome evaluation, provides additional support for the effectiveness of the Tier 1 Program of the Project P.A.T.H.S. in Hong Kong.

University-based academic advising at a large, Great Lakes state institution was designed to support first-year students' transition to college. We conducted individual interviews and facilitated story circles with 162 students to determine their perceived effectiveness of advising. Analyses revealed four overarching themes: student difficulty making the distinction between roles of high school guidance counselors and postsecondary academic advisors, advisor communication, student desire for a relationship, and advisor accessibility. On the basis of data gathered, we developed a model for understanding the formation and maintenance of student advising perceptions.

Dalihan Na Tolu is a culture and philosophy of life of the Batak people. It is not only the kinship relationship contained in it but also as a driving force for the life order of the believers. In the Dalihan Na Tolu philosophy there is a relationship that needs to be evaluated in relation to social equality, namely the relationship between Hulahula and Boru. The perspective of Christian faith will complement the philosophy of Dalihan Na Tolu if it is built in the love and sacrifice of Christ, which is ultimately driven by love in the Dalihan Na Tolu philosophy. This study uses a qualitative literature approach, which uses descriptive methods, and analysis-argumentative. descriptive, analysis-interpretative, and argumentation-comparative. With the constructive comparative aid method, this study uses various literature sources, such as books, journal articles, and dissemination on web pages to gain new insights from the text being studied. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the theology of social equality in the perspective of Christian faith should complement the philosophy of Dalihan Na Tolu which centers on the love and sacrifice of Christ. The relationship between hulahula and boru is no longer seen as an order of law which implies a curse but rather as a local wisdom that enriches mission values to introduce the love of Christ through the Dalihan Na Tolu philosophy.

A study was conducted to determine which practices in a special school for gifted and talented adolescents were associated with ratings of effectiveness of program outcomes. Subjects included 2,213 students attending the five Tennessee Governor's Schools from 1986 to 1988 and the directors of the schools. Questionnaire data collected from the students were compared with internal data gathered via interviews from the school directors to establish which changes in practice influenced students' ratings. Relationships were found between student' ratings of program effectiveness and director' changes in program practices. In addition, yearly evaluation data were compared with three year evaluation data to illustrate potential misinterpretations of program effectiveness. A case is made to expand the time line for program evaluations so the iterative nature of the relationship between practices and outcomes will emerge against the specific program backdrop which includes population characteristics and director decision making.
