Community work is one of the methods of practice that is at the heart of the social work profession. It entails working with communities that have been marginalized. The goal of community work is usually to have communities improve their wellbeing. Without empowerment, marginalized communities remain powerless over circumstances that prevail in their environments. The main object of this article is to review literature on steps that may be taken to empower communities. In writing this article, we adopted a traditional style of literature review where we obtained our data from the following databases: Springer Link, Wiley Online Library and ProQuest central. We used the following key words to retrieve articles from the online databases: power, community, empowerment and community empowerment. We paired each of the key words using the Boolean operator AND. We observed from the literature that there are three levels of empowerment; psychological, organizational and community levels of empowerment. We also identified three models of that are suitable for use in community work for the purpose of empowering marginalized communities.  From the model developed by Jackson et al. (1989), we concluded that steps that may be taken in empowering the marginalized through community work are; developmental casework, mutual support, issue identification and campaign, community participation and social movements.

Communication is the main currency through which we make transactions in the social world. Without it, interactions among people would be mechanical. Dementia is one of the mental disorders with the abilities of excluding one from participating in a social world. The aim of this study was to review literature on the efficacy of nonverbal communication when working with people living with dementia. A narrative style of literature review was used in writing this article. It involved conducting an online search of articles from the following scientific databases (2000-2019): ProQuest Central, ScienceDirect, Wiley online library, Springer Link, and Oxford Journals. Only articles that had been peer reviewed were selected in writing this review. The process of selecting articles involved pairing the word dementia in every search with the following key words: communication, epidemiology, types, nonverbal, touch, instrumental, expressive, facial expressions and eye contacts, and personal space. Themes were then extracted from the selected articles. From our findings we concluded that nonverbal communication is an important component for working with people living with dementia. This is because people living with dementia have a reduced capacity to use the verbal form of communication. This now makes it necessary for professionals providing care to people living with dementia to be acquainted with nonverbal forms of communication.

PurposeThis article aims to analyze the specific indicators of the circular economy (CE) in terms of analytical aspects, scope and breadth of metrics and levels of innovation associated with CE.Design/methodology/approachA literature review was developed with a sample of 125 articles, extracted from Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Emerald, Google Scholar, Online Library, Sage, Springer, Taylor and Francis and JSTOR databases.FindingsThe results indicate the lack of integration of the social dimension and predominance of environmental indicators, lack of indicators for the meso level and concentration of metrics for the product level. Methodological criteria of validity and reliability for measurement studies are recommended, as well as paths and proposals for future research in the CE.Research limitations/implicationsThe study’s limitations are linked to the content and method aspects. Although the search was performed in several databases, with a significant number of articles returned compared to other reviews of the topic, the possibilities are limited by the data source and the impossibility of a broader review. The theme is not yet consolidated and this affects the linearity of the revised results. As for the method, the analysis and coding in systematic reviews involve the authors’ capacity for exploration and cognition.Practical implicationsThe article proposes six theoretical propositions and the theoretical framework that portrays the main findings of the study and questions to drive future research in the topic.Social implicationsThe article points out opportunities for companies, universities and the government regarding the possibilities that can be explored to develop knowledge and practice about the field.Originality/valueThis research advances the CE literature by means of providing a review of the indicators, metrics and tools oriented toward the CE literature that contributes to the improvement and consolidation of the various researches in the field.

Transdisciplinary research aims to investigate complex problems by integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines through knowledge co-creation. Initiating and planning transdisciplinary research requires a thorough review of the literature within many disciplines, demanding that researchers conciliate meanings of concepts from different disciplines, define the boundaries of each discipline within the topic and identify synergies between disciplines. Thus, conducting a transdisciplinary literature review can pose a challenge to researchers, and little guidance is available on how to approach this challenge in a systematic way. To address this, we develop a protocol for transdisciplinary literature reviews, extending the heuristics proposed by Leavy (2011). We describe how researchers can determine the relevant bodies of knowledge for the issue investigated, how they can locate and summarise relevant literature from all relevant disciplines, how they can determine the scope of each discipline within the project and how they can visualise the interaction between disciplines in regards to the topic researched. We also suggest methods for researchers to create new interactions between disciplines and propose new conceptual frameworks on the basis of the literature synthesis performed in the transdisciplinary literature review. To demonstrate how our framework can be employed to review literature on complex issues while integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines, we use the issue of accessibility of mHealth technologies as a case study and apply our guidelines to conduct a transdisciplinary literature review on the topic. We integrate findings from the social sciences, ethics, economics, law, psychology, medicine and engineering, among other disciplines to examine the accessibility of mHealth and propose promising areas for future transdisciplinary projects. The findings from this case study suggest the proposed transdisciplinary review guidelines can be used as a sole research methodology for initial transdisciplinary research projects, as well as an auxiliary tool for larger transdisciplinary projects.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate in the literature the relation of socioeconomic factors in the incidence of the disease and other outcomes related to leprosy. Method: Integrative review conducted in Lilacs, Medline, Scopus databases and SciELO online library with studies from 2000 to 2016. Results: 32 studies were included. Only studies that analyzed statistical associations of socioeconomic factors and outcomes related to leprosy were selected. Conclusion: Leprosy is greatly affected by the social context in which the patient is inserted, the chances of exposure to illness are the result of a set of not only individual aspects, but also of contexts or collective conditions. It is imperative for Nursing, as an essential part of the multiprofessional team entrusted with the care and surveillance of the disease, to recognize these factors to predict unfavorable outcomes and to develop new practices capable of reducing inequities.

Research related to optimizing zakat management has been widely discussed, as well as masjid-based objects, but research related to optimizing zakat at masjid focusing on the application of graduation empowerment is still rarely found. This research initiated the concept of graduation empowerment in the Masjid-based zakat Management. Thus, the mustahik around the masjid can be managed systematically so that the graduation process into muzkki can be measured and effective. This article is a conceptual study through a literature review of selected articles that examine best practices both in microfinance and in social funds for the poor. Empowerment of graduations at the Masjid can be done effectively through: 1) The masjid has baitul maal and baitul tamwil (BMT) as divisions that manage the social funds of Masjid worshipers; 2) BMT builds a mustahik and muzakki database as a basis for making maps of community empowerment; 3) BMT designs graduation empowerment for mustahik through holistic intermediation; 4) professional managers; 5) partnerships with technical assistance providers; 6) program and reporting transparency Keywords: Optimization, Masjid-Based, Zakat Management, Graduation empowerment, BMT
