Reduced forms (RFs) spoken by native English speakers have been challenging on the part of the second language (L2) learners. This chapter aims to address suprasegmental features to Turkish preparatory language school students in relation to L2 listening comprehension. Considering the limited research on RFs in learning English as a L2 context, this pre-test post-test control group design study aimed to explore whether the instruction of five RFs in sentential level results in any difference in listening comprehension test performance. The five forms entail contraction, assimilation, flap, elision, and linking. A total of 343 were recruited, and RFs instruction was delivered through the web page designated for the study for five weeks, and the performance of the eight groups was measured twice throughout the study. The findings indicated that sentence level of RFs instruction through web-based learning facilitates the listening comprehension of RFs.

This paper examines the effect of shadow reading strategy on secondary school students’ listening comprehension skills and motivation. These participants, who constituted the human subjects for the study, were ninth-year students pursuing other subjects in Arabic and learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) as well. The research questions asked to accomplish the purpose of the study focused on: (1) Determining listening comprehension skills suitable for the EFL secondary school students; (2) Finding out differences in listening comprehension test regarding the experimental and control group; and (3) Finding out differences in listening motivation scale scores regarding experimental and control group. Three instruments – designed by the researchers – that include: (listening comprehension skills checklist, listening comprehension skills test and listening motivation scale) were used. Results showed that the regular method used to teach listening is not as significant as the shadow reading strategy that developed listening comprehension skills and motivation. Consequently, the experimental group students outperformed their counterparts (the control group) in listening comprehension skills and motivation scores.

By analyzing the test data of 2718 secondary school students in Guangzhou China on 15 listening items from Guangzhou English Achievement Examination (2015) through G-DINA model, the study explored the relationships among the listening comprehension skills. Based on the test specifications and listening skill taxonomies in existence, 5 experts in language skills and language testing conducted item content analysis independently for the 15 listening items, defined 5 listening attributes, and constructed the Q-matrix. After analyzing latent classes and their posterior probabilities, the study discovered the relationship among the listening skills. According to the listening skill relationship, the study provides insights on the sequence of listening skill training. The efficiency of training may be improved when closely related listening skills are instructed and practiced at the same time. The study also demonstrates that the compensatory and saturated G-DINA model caters to the characteristics of listening comprehension skills and can be applied to tests involving highly interactive and hierarchical skills.
