The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of potassium doses, being applied in fertigation on iceberg lettuce cultivar “Lucy Brown” in Typic Hapludox. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, consisting of six doses of K2O (0; 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 kg ha-1) and four blocks. The treatments were applied in six periods: 15, 21, 28, 34, 39, and 43 days after transplantation seedlings, using potassium chloride as a source of K2O. The variables analyzed were: total fresh mass, fresh head mass, head circumference, number of inner leaves, number of outer leaves, total number of leaves, total yield and commercial yield. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and means compared by regression models. Thus, we can conclude that the K2O doses that provides the highest value of the variables is 75 kg ha-1, with the exception of the number of internal leaves that do not have a significant effect.

ABSTRACT Correlations and path analysis between characteristics can aid the selection of important attributes in breeding programs. Thus, the objective of this work was to perform genotypic, phenotypic correlations and path analysis under commercial yield of garlic bulbs, depending on morphological and agronomic variables. The experiment was carried out in 2017 at the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri and Universidade Federal de Lavras, using ten garlic genotypes, eight trials and two commercial cultivars, Caçador and Jonas. We evaluated: plant height; number of leaves, total bulb number; total bulb mass, total bulb yield, marketable bulb yield and number of cloves per bulb. The genotypic and phenotypic correlations were positive and significant between marketable yield of bulbs with bulb mass, total yield and number of cloves per bulb, indicating that selection based on these characteristics will help increase the yield of garlic. However, only the number of cloves per bulb had a direct effect and a relevant indirect effect on the marketable yield of garlic.

The use of soil remineralizers with efficient microorganisms (EM) can represent an effective and sustainable alternative to improve the growth, development, and yield of cultivated plants. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different doses of EM, in the presence or absence of rock dust (RD), on the development of iceberg lettuce, cultivar Lucy Brown. The design used was completely randomized, arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme, with four replications. The treatments consisted of the presence and absence of RD in the substrate composition, combined with five commercial product doses based on EM (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 L ha-1). At 30 days after transplanting, root and stem length, head circumference, the number of leaves, stem diameter, leaf area, fresh matter of root, stem, leaf, and shoot, and dry matter of root, stem, leaf, and shoot were evaluated. There was an interaction between the factors for most variables of economic importance. The dose of 4.5 L ha-1 of the product based on EM, combined with PR, implied the best performance of iceberg lettuce under the studied cultivation conditions.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the influence of green fertilization and the compost on the production of radish, cv. ‘Cometa’. The experimental design was randomized blocks with 6 treatments and 4 replicates: T1 - Leucaena, T2 - ‘Madeira-nova’, T3 - Compost (maize straw and composted cattle manure), T4 – ‘Sempre verde’ grass + compost and T5 – ‘Sempre verde’ grass and T6 - control without fertilization, totaling 24 experimental plots. The total area of the experimental plot was 1.44 m2, with useful area of 0.80 m2 and 21.0 t ha-1 of fertilizer (dry basis) were incorporated in each treatment. The radish crop was directly sown in the beds, in 2- to 3-cm-deep holes, leaving one plant at spacing of 20 cm between rows and 5 cm between plants. Twenty-nine days after planting, plants were evaluated for total yield, commercial yield, percentages of commercial roots (%) and waste roots (%), fresh and dry matter of shoots and roots, total and individual leaf area and the SPAD index. The incorporation of Leucaena at the amount of 21.0 t ha-1 (dry basis) promoted the highest increments for the analyzed characteristics.

ABSTRACT Two experiments were conducted in Petrolina, State of Pernambuco (PE), Brazil, in order to evaluate the performance of mini tomato cultivars under the conditions of the Sub-Mid São Francisco Valley. One on crops of the second half of the year (SH) from August to December 2012, and other on crops of the first half of the year (FH) from March to July 2013. Six mini tomato cultivars were evaluated in both seasons: E5663, Kada, F1170, Tanzimech, E1275 and Abirú. A randomized block experimental design was used, with four replications, arranged in split plot, with the growing seasons in the plots and cultivars in the subplots. The total and commercial fruit yield, soluble solid contents, fruit yield per plant, number of fruits per plant, and fruit fresh weight were evaluated. The total yield was higher in the FH, regardless of the cultivar used. The cultivar E5663 presented yield of 40.3 Mg ha-1 in the SH and 104.0 Mg ha-1 in the FH. Commercial yield, soluble solid content and yield per plant followed the same trend. The number of fruits per plant ranged from 390.8 to 941.4 (FH) and from 80.5 to 315.4 (SH). The cultivar E5663 presented the best yield and soluble solid content responses, thus, it may be recommended for the conditions of Petrolina PE, and can be adopted for planting in both seasons evaluated.

SummaryThe regrowth of Aberystwyth S. 23 perennial ryegrass, S. 24 perennial ryegrass, S. 59 red fescue and S. 170 tall fescue was studied in field swards, comparing four levels of applied nitrogen, for 8 weeks following a clearing cut. The clearing cuts were in mid-October, mid-February and mid-March in each of 3 years, different plots being used on each occasion.The application of N increased the number of leaf primordia, the number of un-emerged leaves, the rate of leaf emergence and death, leaf blade length, width and weight, sheath length, number of leaves per unit area of ground and proportion of green tissue in total yield. The application of N had little effect on the number of leaves per tiller and tended to reduce weight per unit area of leaf blade. The increase in size, weight and number of leaf blades appeared to be major reasons for the positive effect of applied N on yield, previously reported; and the increase in sheath length contributed to the increase in proportion of yield above 4 cm. Rate of leaf extension was not closely related to yield and was more sensitive to temperature than was yield. Changes during regrowth in blade and sheath length helped to explain changes in weight per tiller, previously reported. The effects of improving weather conditions in late winter/early spring were similar to the effects of applied N: larger, heavier leaf blades, longer sheaths, a taller canopy, a lower proportion of dead material, younger leaves. The length of shoot apex per leaf primordium was relatively constant. Leaves continued to emerge, at a slow rate, in the period December–February. S. 170 had the biggest leaves, particularly in May, and the slowest rate of leaf turnover. Rate of leaf extension was increased by applied N more, on average, in the ryegrasses than in the fescues.

Post-harvest shelf life of tomato fruit may be increased by deploying mutant alleles which affect the natural ripening process and/or by a favorable genotypic background. Among the several ripening mutant genes, alcobaça (alc) has proved to be highly efficient in increasing shelf life of commercial tomato fruits, especially in heterozygosis, a state at which no limiting deleterious effects upon fruit color occur. The effects of heterozygosity in the alcobaça locus (alc+/alc) on yield and fruit quality traits of tomato hybrids with three genotypic backgrounds. We evaluated three pairs of hybrids obtained from crosses between the near-isogenic pollen source lines Flora-Dade (alc+/alc+) and TOM-559 (alc/alc), and three maternal lines (Stevens, NC-8276 and Piedmont). The six treatments were factorial combinations of two different status in the alc locus (alc+/alc and alc+/alc+) versus three different genotypic backgrounds (maternal lines). Fruits were harvested at the breaker stage of maturation and stored in shelves at 21ºC for 14 days. Yield and fruit quality traits were then evaluated. Regardless of the background, the alc allele in heterozygosis (alc+/alc) did not interfere with the total yield, commercial yield, average mass per fruit, average mass per commercial fruit, fruit shape, or with fruit peduncular scar diameter. The alc+/alc genotype reduced the rate of firmness loss and delayed evolution of the red color of the fruit, thus contributing to an increase of the post-harvest shelf life for all three genotypic backgrounds.

Field experiment was carried out during 2010 rainy season to find the effect of seeding rate on the growth and yield of okra (Abelmuschus esculentus) in Zuru Northern Guinea Savannah. Zuru is located in Zuru Local government area of Kebbi State (Latitude 11o 251 to 11o 551 North and Longitude 4o 51 to 5o 251 East of the equator). The experiment consisted of three treatments that is planting okra at one plant per stand (S1), two plants per stand (S2) and three plants per stand (S3). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) and the treatments replicated three time. The result of the experiment has shown that plant height and number of leaves/plant at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after planting (    WAP) were significantly influenced by seeding rate (P<0.05). At 3, 6 and 9 WAP tallest plants were obtained from okra plants planted at three plants/stand (27.83, 54.0 and 77.0cm) respectively followed by okra planted at two plant/stand (24.77, 50.67 and 74.33 leave/plant respectively ). However, more number of leaves/plant were obtained from okra plant at one plant/stand (9.67, 24.67 and 48.0 leaves/plant respectively) followed by okra planted at two plants/stand (8.33, 18.33 and 36.33 leaves/plant respectively). Seeding rate had significant influence on time of 50 percent flowering with one plant/stand first attaining 50 percent flowering stage just within 36.33 days followed by okra planted at two plants/stand (38 days). The mean fresh fruit yield of okra was also significantly influenced by seeding rate with the highest yield of fresh fruits obtained from three plants/stand (83.34/ha) followed by okra planted at two plants/stand (55.56/ha). However, the result of the findings recommends that, okra should be planted at two plants/stand for medium sized and marketable okra fresh fruits since at three plants/stand leads to the production of undersized fresh fruits which do not often attract customers. At one plant/stand, there seemed to be early fruiting and bigger sized fresh fruits but low total yield due to underutilization of land resource/space. Planting at one plant/stand should therefore be avoided

The occurrence of degraded areas worldwide grows each year and measures must be taken to mitigate degradation and to recover these areas. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of soil preparation and NPK levels on the growth of five native species of the Atlantic Rainforest in clay extraction area. The experimental design was randomized block in a split-split plot arrangement with four replications. Subsoiling and scarification soil preparation represented main plots.  Doses of NPK 04-14-08: 0; 40; 80;160; and 320 g pit-1 represented subplots and Atlantic Rainforest native species represented sub-subplots. Absolute growth rate, stem diameter and number of leaves were evaluated, 210 days after planting. The type of soil preparation did not influence the development of the species. The best dose for Dalbergia ecastaphyllum, Inga laurina, Protium heptaphyllum and Psidium cattleyanum were 176.49, 150.18, 199.25 and 166.48 g pit-1 of NPK, respectively. Schinus terebinthifolius was highly responsive to planting fertilization, being recommended 320 g pit-1 of NPK. All species are indicated for area recovery.

An experiment was conducted to assess the performance of sweet pepper varieties as influenced by nitrogen levels from August 2014 to February 2015 at Mangalpur, Chitwan. The experiment was laid out in two factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications having sixteen treatments. Varieties and levels of nitrogen significantly affected growth, yield and qualitative parameters of fruits. Hybrid Indra and NS 632 performed better than open pollinated varieties viz. Sagar and California Wonder. Days to fifty percent flowering of NS 632 were earlier than California Wonder. Indra variety had the highest plant height (52.18 cm), number of secondary branches per plant (13.51) from 250 kg N/ha through chemical fertilizer while number of leaves per plant was higher in NS 632 variety (57.22) than Sagar variety (47.37). Indra variety showed the highest fruit weight (87.59 g) and total yield (39.45 t/ha) but NS 632 variety produced more number of fruits per plant (9.25) than California Wonder variety. This study showed that sweet pepper yield of hybrid varieties applied with 250 kg N/ha through chemical fertilizer was appropriate dose to get optimum yield under Chitwan condition.

O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 5x4 com 4 repetições, em casa de vegetação no Núcleo de Engenharia de Água e Solo (NEAS), pertencente à Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia, localizada no município de Cruz das Almas - BA. A cultivar utilizada foi a Anão de Jardim e os tratamentos foram constituídos por cinco concentrações de água residuária diluídas em água de abastecimento (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100%) e quatro lâminas de irrigação obtidas a partir das percentagens de evaporação do tanque classe A (70, 90, 110 e 130%). As variáveis analisadas foram: altura da planta (AP), diâmetro do caule (DC), número de folhas (NF), massa fresca e seca da parte aérea (MFPA e MSPA), dias para o aparecimento de botões florais (DABF), dias para o período de floração (DPF), dias para abertura total dos capítulos (DATC), diâmetros internos e externos dos capítulos (DI e DE), massa fresca e seca dos capítulos (MFC e MSC), além da estimativa do consumo hídrico da planta (CH). Os resultados obtidos mostraram que, com exceção da AP, todas as variáveis foram influenciadas pelas lâminas de irrigação ou pelas diluições de água residuária, não havendo influência significativa da interação entre os fatores para nenhuma das variáreis avaliadas. O uso de água residuária e a lâmina de 110% da evaporação do tanque classe A favoreceram o desenvolvimento do girassol. The experiment was conducted in experimental design completely randomized in a factorial 5x4 with 4 repetitions in a greenhouse at the Center of Water and Soil Engineering (NEAS), of the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia, located in Cruz das Almas, BA, Brazil. The cultivar used was cv. Anão de Jardim and the treatments consisted of five wastewater concentrations diluted in water supply (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) and four irrigations blades obtained through evaporation of the percentages of the class A pan (70, 90 , 110 and 130%). The variables analyzed were: plant height (AP), stem diameter (DC), number of leaves (NF), fresh and dry weight of the aerial part (MFPA and MSPA), days for the appearance of flower buds (DABF), days to flowering period (DPF), days for full opening of chapters (DATC), internal and external diameters of the chapters (DI and DE), fresh and dry weight of chapters (MFC and MSC), and the estimate of water consumption plant. The results showed that, except for the AP, all variables were influenced by the irrigation blades or the wastewater concentrations, and there was no significant influence of interaction between factors for any evaluated variables. The use of wastewater and 110% evaporation of the class A pan depth favored the development of sunflower. The lower and higher water consumption of the culture was observed in depths 70% and 130%, respectively. Keywords: reuse, cv. Anão de Jardim, class A pan.
