This Introduction situates the approach of the book within existing debates on comedy and politics. Section 1 addresses two broad and popular frameworks, which are labeled ‘Instrumental’ and ‘Critical’. They each provide good reasons to be sceptical of the role of comedy in politics by questioning the actual impact it can have. Section 2 outlines the approach of this book, to think about comedy as an everyday practice of global resistance.

AbstractDo political gender stereotypes exist in egalitarian settings in which all parties nominate women? Do they matter for candidate selection in systems of proportional representation with multiparty competition and preferential voting? To date, these questions remain unanswered because related research is limited to the U.S. case. Our pioneering study examines political stereotypes in one of the “least likely” cases, Finland—a global forerunner in gender equality. We find, first, that stereotypes persist even in egalitarian paradises. Second, when testing across settings of candidate choice, we find that the effect varies greatly: political gender stereotypes are powerful in hypothetical choices, but they work neither in favor of nor against female candidates when many “real,” viable, experienced, and incumbent female candidates are competing. Although in open-list systems with preferential voting, gender stereotypes can directly affect female candidates’ electoral success, in Finland, their actual impact in real legislative elections appears marginal.

Uncomplicated diverticula of the small intestine are asymptomatic, extremely rare in everyday practice and, most often, are detected already with the development of complications such as perforation and abscess formation. Diagnosis of complicated diverticula of the small intestine is difficult due to many other, more common causes of acute abdomen, insufficient use of the capabilities of the methods of radiation diagnosis, the lack of application and correct interpretation of the results of instrumental and special research methods. The article presents a clinical case of perforation of the jejunum diverticulum. The results of effective MDCT diagnosis and successful surgical intervention are presented: laparoscopic resection of the jejunum with the formation of the primary hardware intracorporeal enteroentero-anastomosis side by side.

Chapter 7 examines how temples were constructed and maintained to enable trainees to attain a transcendent spiritual state through monastic discipline and studies of various kinds of sacred writings paired with carefully structured activities of everyday practice. It stresses the significance of Zen temples by examining the role of monks as those who depart from their home to retreat from ordinary society, replacing ordinary family relationships with a new sense of lineal identity and hierarchy in the monastery. This chapter also discusses regional transfers brought about by evangelical teachers to various centers of secular power, such as the capital cities of Hangzhou in China and Kyoto in Japan, or hubs of transit, such as the ports of Ningbo in China and Hakata in Japan, where all wayfarers embarked or disembarked from their journeys.

In this paper, I will try to appraise the critique potential of Erving Goffman?s sociology. The starting hypothesis will be that Goffman?s understanding of common sense offered in Frame Analysis opens the possibility of attaining a critical insight into the structural givens of everyday practice. I will also try to show that Goffman?s understanding of common sense was under heavy influence of pragmatism and phenomenology - and that the often-overseen epistemological differences between these two schools of thought had significant consequences on his sociology. Namely, in the Frame Analysis we can easily find a certain tension between insistence on the autonomous theoretical importance of common sense put forward by the pragmatist and reductionist tendencies towards this type of thought found among the phenomenologists. Therefore, I will argue that this ambivalence regarding the role of common sense in interpreting social realty is the main reason why critique potential of Goffman?s sociology remains implicit in its character.

the smallest obstacle to the actual impact comes from the decision making itself concerned. The obstacle that most often appears is education, the role of the inability of someone to act alone or not firmly. Often a manager talks about himself being chosen by doubts that are so master of the way of thinking and acting. A manager who is hesitant in acting will cause him to give up his decision to his subordinates who are often justified by the exercise of authority. He raised the issue of authority more so that the leadership in the hierarchy that is more resistant then made a decision. He looks for reasons in such a way that the role of making decisions shifts horizontally to other managers on a level

A modern economy is market focused. It is held that when a woman becomes a participant in the market on her own term as a rational economic agent she is empowered in an economic sense. It does not take into account the other spectrums of empowerment viz. gender political, cultural and like. A nation's infrastructure provides the basic scaffolding for development. The differences in how men and women use infrastructure services have important implications for sector policies, investment priorities, and program designs. This chapter will analyse how the infrastructure development programme as an economic process assist women to enhance capability of them within society and how its actual impact is mutually constituted by other non-economic social processes and make it an over determined matter. Our study has shown that adequate access of the social infrastructure services has fetched benefits for women and ensures empowerment of women.

In its materialization of regard and disregard, the 2015 introduction of the Starbucks luxury line prompts new questions about the impact of an emergent app ascetic on the everyday practice of order. In this article, I build on previous studies of time and power, while simultaneously exploring the material practice of luxury narrated by, but practiced in contrast to, promises of community and social consciousness. I argue that time is made luxurious through the power to redistribute how one is positioned in relation to others and that this materialization reveals the role of disregard in luxury relations more generally. I examine how the formation of luxury lines that involve inserting oneself in spatial and temporal relation to others exposes the underlying disregard involved in the practice of ordering and consuming in time and space. I then explore the ways in which this practice exposes how consumption of luxury lines of material goods—particularly those goods produced by companies that make a claim to benevolence—has involved a false sense of accord narrated by tales of community-producing luxury that purport to be practicing regard for others in the practice of rewarding oneself.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, in different ways, ethical dilemmas arise in medicine and life sciences. It is critical for medical professionals to respond with confidence when ethical challenges are addressed in their clinical practice. Medical ethics and bioethics education is recognized as an essential course of the medical curriculum. The course aims to provide students with knowledge and competencies on dealing with moral problems. OBJECTIVES: In this article, we aim to explore students’ views about the importance and role of medical ethics education for their future practice. Their suggestions on specific medical ethics and bioethics topics were also considered, as well as previous knowledge on ethics before they enrolled in university. METHODS: A paper questionnaire was developed and distributed among first-year foreign medical students from the Faculty of Medicine in the Medical University-Sofia in Bulgaria. All students participated in the study anonymously and voluntarily. The study was conducted during January and February 2020. RESULTS: Completed questionnaires were received from 366 medical students. Data collected demonstrates that only 19% of the students were taught ethics before enrolling in university and covered topics on philosophy and ethics, civil and human rights. The majority (92%) of the responders believe that the study of medical ethics and bioethics helps medical professionals to improve their skills in identifying ethical problems in their everyday practice. Interesting were the suggestions for topics in medical ethics and bioethics that needed further study during lectures and seminars and included principles of medical ethics and bioethics, ethical behavior in medicine and health care, ethical dimensions of new technologies in health care, ethical dimensions of clinical decisions and patients’ quality of life, ethics and health management. CONCLUSIONS: Medical ethics education is significant for future physicians, helping them to improve their skills in identifying ethical issues, and base their decisions on fundamental ethical principals in their everyday practice. Attention should be given to topics related to principles of medical ethics, models of patient-physician relationships, new technologies in health care, ethics and health policy.

Abstract The reuse of research software needs good documentation, however, the documentation in particular is often criticized. Especially in non-IT specific disciplines, the lack of documentation is attributed to the lack of training, the lack of time or missing rewards. This article addresses the hypothesis that scientists do document but do not know exactly what they need to document, why, and for whom. In order to evaluate the actual documentation practice of research software, we examined existing recommendations, and we evaluated their implementation in everyday practice using a concrete example from the engineering sciences and compared the findings with best practice examples. In order to get a broad overview of what documentation of research software entailed, we defined categories and used them to conduct the research. Our results show that the big picture of what documentation of research software means is missing. Recommendations do not consider the important role of developers whose documentation takes mainly place in their research articles. Moreover, we show that research software always has a history that influences the documentation.
