Background Preschool children are vulnerable in growth. Soy-bean formula (SF) and formula-100 (F100) are supplementary foodswhich contain of high energy and are available at low price; how-ever, they are not widely used for preschool children.Objectives To investigate the effect of SF compared to F100 onthe growth of preschool children.Methods A cross-over trial was conducted on 96 preschool chil-dren aged 4-7 years. Subjects were randomly divided into 2 groupswhich received 200 ml soybean formula (n=49) or F100 (n=47) for1 month and crossed-over after a six-week wash-out period. Bodyweight was measured weekly. Body height and food analysis by 3-day food recall were measured at the beginning and the end of thestudy. The criteria of the acceptability of the formula was eithergood or poor.Results Supplementation with SF as well as F100 induced catchup growth as shown by the increase of Δz-score. There were nosignificant difference of Δ weight for age z-score, Δ height for agez-score, and Δ weight for height z score between groups duringthe first and second phases of the trial. The acceptability of F100was significantly better than that of SF at the beginning; neverthe-less, the difference was not significant at the second phase trial.Conclusions Soybean formula and F100 given for a one monthperiod can induce catch-up growth in preschool children. Soybeanformula as an alternative health food can be accepted by preschoolchildren

Background Healthy children will have normal growth according totheir age and gender. To assess and monitor the growth of children, agrowth standard is needed. The WHO and CDC released a newgrowth standard to replace the 1977 NCHS growth standard in April2006 and May 2000 respectively.Objective To obtain the prevalence of underweight, stunting andwasting in less than five years old children based on the WHO-2006and CDC-2000 growth standard and compared the results.Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Songan Village,District of Kintamani, Bangli on December 2006. Healthy childrenaged 0-59 months who visited the study site were enrolled.Anthropometric data including weight and length/height were obtainedusing standard anthropometrics procedures by trained doctor assistants.Nutritional status was determined by calculating Z-score values (cut-off point -2SD) weight-for-age (underweight), length/height-for-age(stunting) and weight-for-length/height (wasting) using WHO-2006and CDC-2000 growth standard. McNemar test was done to compareboth results and P<0.05 was considered as a statistically significant.Results There were 264 children, consisted of 139 (52.7%) male and125 (47.3%) female. The prevalence of underweight, stunting andwasting based on WHO 2006 was 20.5%, 20.1% and 45.1%respectively and based on CDC 2000 was 26.5%, 12.1% and 52.3%.The difference was statistically significant (P<0.0001).Conclusion The prevalence of underweight and wasting in childrenless than five years old based on the WHO-2006 was lower comparedto that based on CDC-2000, while the prevalence of stunting washigher.

Aluminum powder with different C and C–Cu mixtures powders were fabricated by powder metallurgy, using high-energy mechanical milling as a pre-treatment of powders. To evaluate the combined effect of the C–Cu mixture and the process conditions, such as sintering temperature/time and milling time, on the yield stress and hardness, two experimental designs were carried out. The results were analyzed with Minitab Statistical Software using contour plots. From the results, better mechanical properties were found at a Cu/C ratio of 0.33 and samples with high C content (3 wt. %). In samples subject to long sintering time (3 h), the mechanism of precipitation of the second phase was mainly present, resulting in an improvement in mechanical properties. From the difference found between the elastic limit and the microhardness tests, it was found that there was an inefficient sintering process affecting the elastic limit test results. Additionally, X-ray analyses using the Rietveld program, were used for microstructural characterization and mechanical parameters of yield strength and ultimate tensile strength.

Addition of interstitial elements to γ-TiAl alloys is currently being explored as a method for improving the properties of these alloys. Previous work in which a number of interstitial elements were studied showed that boron was particularly effective in refining the grain size in castings, and led to enhanced strength while maintaining reasonable ductility. Other investigators have shown that B in γ-TiAl alloys tends to promote the formation of TiB2 as a second phase. In this study, the microstructure of Bcontaining TiAl alloys was examined in detail in order to describe the mechanism by which B alters the structure and properties of these alloys.

Alternative health practices have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many patients visit specific complementary practitioners, while others attempt to educate themselves, trusting advice from employees at local health food stores or the Internet. Thirty-two retail health food stores were surveyed on the nature of the information provided by their staff. A research assistant visited the stores and presented as the mother of a child in whom Crohn’s disease had been diagnosed. Seventy-two per cent (23 of 32) of store employees offered advice, such as to take nutritional and herbal supplements. Of the 23 stores where recommendations were made, 15 (65%) based their recommendation on a source of information. Fourteen of the 15 stores using information sources used the same reference book. This had a significant impact on the recommendations; the use of nutritional supplements was favoured. In conclusion, retail health food stores are not as inconsistent as hypothesized, although there are many variances in the types of supplements recommended for the same chronic disease.

Abstract This study presents the evaluation of chosen anthropometric and motor parameters in group of female junior competitors throughout the course of 2-year preparation of aerobic gymnastics by means of Z-scores. The observed group consisted of 12 girls (average age at the beginning of observance 14.08 ± 1.19 years). Evaluation of anthropometric (body height, body weight, body mass index, percentage of body fat, acting body weight) and motor parameters (sit-ups in 30 seconds and 60 seconds, pull-ups to bar, modified push-ups, standing long jump, backwards tandem walking, shuttle run 4×10 m, Jacík’s test) was carried out in standard conditions in nine girls at 3-month intervals. It has been confirmed that female probands with higher Z-score of motor parameters together with lower Z-score of anthropometric parameters achieved higher sport performance during the 2-year observance at competitions, with an exception of one such proband.

Solid lubricants have had good acceptance when used in problem areas where the conventional lubricants cannot be applied: under extreme temperatures, high charges and in chemically reactive environments. In case of materials manufactured by powder metallurgy, particles of solid lubricants powders can be easily incorporated to the matrix volume at the mixing stage. In operation, this kind of material provides a thin layer of lubricant that prevents direct contact between the surfaces. The present study aimed at incorporating particles of second phase lubricant (h-BN) into a matrix of nickel by high-energy ball milling in order to obtain a self-lubricating composite with homogeneous phase distribution of lubricant in the matrix. Mixtures with 10 vol.% of h-BN varying the milling time of 5, 10, 15 and 20 hours and their relationship ball/powder of 20:1 were performed. The effect of milling time on the morphology and microstructure of the powders was studied by X-ray diffraction, SEM and EDS. The composite powders showed reduction in average particle size with increasing milling time and the milling higher than 5 hours resulted in equiaxial particles and the formation of nickel boride.

The biphasic pattern of glucose-induced insulin secretion is altered in type 2 diabetes. Impairment of the first phase is an early sign of β-cell dysfunction, but the underlying mechanisms are still unknown. Their identification through in vitro comparisons of islets from diabetic and control subjects requires characterization and quantification of the dynamics of insulin secretion by normal islets. When perifused normal human islets were stimulated with 15 mmol/l glucose (G15), the proinsulin/insulin ratio in secretory products rapidly and reversibly decreased (∼50%) and did not reaugment with time. Switching from prestimulatory G3 to G6–G30 induced biphasic insulin secretion with flat but sustained (2 h) second phases. Stimulation index reached 6.7- and 3.6-fold for the first and second phases induced by G10. Concentration dependency was similar for both phases, with half-maximal and maximal responses at G6.5 and G15, respectively. First-phase response to G15–G30 was diminished by short (30–60 min) prestimulation in G6 (vs. G3) and abolished by prestimulation in G8, whereas the second phase was unaffected. After 1–2 days of culture in G8 (instead of G5), islets were virtually unresponsive to G15. In both settings, a brief return to G3–G5 or transient omission of CaCl2 restored biphasic insulin secretion. Strikingly, tolbutamide and arginine evoked immediate insulin secretion in islets refractory to glucose. In conclusion, we quantitatively characterized the dynamics of glucose-induced insulin secretion in normal human islets and showed that slight elevation of prestimulatory glucose reversibly impairs the first phase, which supports the view that the similar impairment in type 2 diabetic patients might partially be a secondary phenomenon.

ABSTRACTIn practical use of the SiC power MOSFETs, further reduction of the channel resistance, high stability under harsh environments, and also, high product yield of large area devices are indispensable. Pn diodes with large chip area have been already reported with high fabrication yield, however, there is few reports in terms of the power MOSFETs. To clarify the difference between the simple pn diodes and power MOSFETs, we have fabricated four pn-type junction TEGs having the different structural features. Those pn junctions are close to the similar structure of DIMOS (Double-implanted MOS) step-by-step from the simple pn diodes. We have surveyed the V-I characteristics dependence on each structural features over the 2inch wafer. Before their fabrication, we formed grid patterns with numbering over the 2inch wafer, then performed the synchrotron x-ray topography observation. This enables the direct comparison the electrical and spectrographic characteristics of each pn junctions with the fingerprints of defects.Four structural features from TypeA to TypeD are as follows. TypeA is the most simple structure as same as the standard pn diodes formed by Al+ ion implantation (I/I), except that the Al+ I/I condition conforms to that of the p-well I/I in the DIMOS. The JTE structure was used for the edge termination on all junctions. While the TypeA consists of one p-type region, TypeB and TypeC consists of a lot of p-wells. The difference of Type B and C is a difference of the oxide between the adjacent p-wells. The oxide of TypeB consists of the thick field oxide, while that of TypeC consists of the thermal oxide corresponding to the gate oxide in the DIMOS. In the TypeD structure, n+ region corresponding to the source in the DIMOS was added by the P+ I/I. The TypeD is the same structure of the DIMOS, except that the gate and source contacts are shorted. The V-I measurements of the pn junctions are performed using the KEITHLEY 237 voltage source meters with semi-auto probe machine. An active area of the fabricated pn junctions TEGs are 150um2 and 1mm2. Concentration and thickness of the drift layer are 1e16cm−3 and 10um, respectively.In order to compare the V-I characteristics of fabricated pn junctions with their defects information that obtained from x-ray topography measurements directly, the grid patterns are formed before the fabrication. The grid patterns were formed over the 2inch wafer by the SiC etching. The synchrotron x-ray topography measurements are carried out at the Beam-Line 15C in Photon-Factory in High-Energy-Accelerator-Research-Organization. Three diffraction conditions, g=11-28, -1-128, and 1-108, are chosen in grazing-incidence geometry (improved Berg-Barrett method).In the presentation, the V-I characteristics mapping on the 2inch wafer for each pn junctions, and the comparison of V-I characteristics with x-ray topography will be reported.

ABSTRACTNanosecond resolution time-resolved x-ray diffraction measurements of thermal strain have been used to measure the interface temperatures in silicon during pulsed-laser irradiation. The pulsed-time-structure of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) was used to measure the temperature of the liquid-solid interface of <111> silicon during melting with an interface velocity of 11 m/s, at a time of near zero velocity, and at a regrowth velocity of 6 m/s. The results of these measurements indicate 110 K difference between the temperature of the interface during melting and regrowth, and the measurement at zero velocity shows that most of the difference is associated with undercooling during the regrowth phase.
