Intensive use of Brazilian pastures without the maintenance of soil fertility has decreased their productivity and favoring the onset of symptoms of nutritional deficiency. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen, potassium, calcium and sulfur omission in symptomatology, growth and dry mass accumulation in grass Convert. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with a completely randomized design, with five treatments and four replications. The treatments were: full nutrient solution, nitrogen omission (N), potassium omission (K), calcium omission (-Ca) and sulfur omission (S). The variables were the number of tillers, leaf number, root size, shoot height, characterization of symptoms of deficiency and shoot and root dry mass accumulation. The data were submitted to the F test by analysis of variance and comparison of means by Tukey’s test (p <0.05). The omission of N, K, Ca and S limited the development of Convert grass compared to the full nutrient solution treatment, reducing the number of leaves, tillers, height, root size and dry mass production. The nutrient omission modified forage morphology, showing visual symptoms of deficiency of each nutrient evaluated. The decreasing order of onset of symptoms was N, Ca, S and K.

The application of Trichoderma fungus can be used to obtain seedlings of higher quality for plantations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Trichoderma isolates on the germination and initial growth of açaí seedlings. Two trials were set up. In the laboratory, the seeds were inoculated in suspensions prepared with each of the isolates for 24 h, and they were arranged in trays containing filter paper in a completely randomized design with five replicates containing 50 seeds each. For the control, the seeds were submerged only in water. Part of the seedlings resulting from seeds treated and not treated with Trichoderma were transferred to bags containing forest soil and were submitted to seven modes of application of Trichoderma and kept in a nursery. The speed of germination and hypocotyl were not influenced by the biological treatment. The application of the different Trichoderma isolates positively influenced the height, collar diameter, number of leaves, root size, leaf area and root, and aerial part dry mass of the açaí seedlings. The application of the Trichoderma isolate TAM01 on the preplanting substrate and biweekly applications on the postplanting substrate was the combination that most positively influenced the development of açai seedlings.

ABSTRACT The availability of single assai palm (Euterpe precatoria) seedlings with good quality is a fundamental requirement to expand the cultivation of the species. This study aimed to assess the use of fruit agro-industry residues as substrate for producing single assai seedlings. The experiment was carried out under nursery conditions, in a completely randomized design, with four replications and eight plants per plot. Fifteen treatments were evaluated: a commercial substrate, four dry and crushed agro-industrial residues (Brazil nut shell, acerola pit, assai pit and cupuassu peel) and ten combinations of these materials in the proportion of 1:1. The following variables were also measured: shoot height; stem diameter; number of leaves; shoot, root and total dry mass; and Dickson Quality Index score. The substrate formulated with Brazil nut shell + acerola pit stood out for promoting a higher growth and dry biomass, resulting in seedlings with a better quality. The pure assai pit residue was not efficient for producing seedlings, but it showed a good potential when mixed in equal proportion with other materials (e.g. Brazil nut shell and cupuassu peel).

It is essential to have knowledge of changes in soil structure, as a result of agricultural use and its relationship with crop development, especially those with potential for use in new regions, such as the cultivation of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) in the Cerrado. In view of this dynamics, the objective was to evaluate the phytometric components of safflower genotypes submitted to levels of soil densities in Cerrado Oxisol. Ten safflower genotypes were then submitted to compaction (five densities: 1.0, 1, 2, 1.4, and 1.8 Mg m-3) in a completely randomized design with four replications under greenhouse conditions. The plots consisted of an overlap of three rings of polyvinylidene chloride of 0.01 m height each, and the treatments were applied in the intermediate layer. The phytometric components (plant height, number of leaves and stem diameter) and shoot dry mass of the crop were evaluated at 30, 60 and 90 days after sowing. There was no significant interaction between safflower genotypes and soil densities, with the effects being isolated for genotypes and/or densities when significant. For the phytometric characteristics evaluated, the genotypes PI250196, PI301049, PI305173, and PI305205 are more stable about the variations of soil density in comparison to the others. The phytometric components and dry mass of safflower shoot are impaired from the mean density of 1.2 Mg m-3.

In recent years, the application of silicon (Si) in crops, including coffee, has become a common practice. The objective of this study was to assess the silicon uptake by coffee seedlings and its effects on plant growth, water and macro and micronutrient uptake. The research was conducted using nutrient solution in a greenhouse at the Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, in a completely randomized design with two treatments (with and without silicon) and three replications. Each plot consisted of three plants grown in a 800 mL vessel containing the treatment solutions. At every three days, water consumption, the concentration of OH - and the depletion of Si and K were assessed in the nutrient solutions. After 33 days, the plants were assessed with regard to their fresh and dry weight of leaves, roots and stem, shoot height and total length of the plant (shoot and root). Number of leaves and internodes, and the content and accumulation of silicon, macro, and micronutrients were also determined. The consumption of water, the amount of potassium uptake and, biomass accumulation were greater in plants grown in solution without silicon addition. However, the concentration of OH- in the solution and the amount of silicon uptake were greater in plants grown in solution with added silicon. Silicon accumulation was greater in leaves than in stem and roots. Silicon decreased coffee plant accumulation of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, zinc, copper and iron.

The aim of this experiment was to determine the best PGPR concentration to support coffee shoot grafting. The experiment was carried out in the form of a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments, namely without PGPR or control K0 (concentration 0 ml L-1 water), K1: 10 ml, L-1 water, K2: 20 ml L-1 water, and K3: 30 ml. L-1 water is given to each polybag. Each treatment had 4 replications so that there were 16 experimental units. The results showed that giving PGPR with a concentration of 30 ml L-1 of water to shoot grafts gave the best results on shoot height and shoot diameter growth. Whereas at a concentration of 10 ml.L-1 water gave the best effect on the increase in the number of leaves of coffee shoot grafting seeds.

The production of quality seedlings is necessary for the trading of ornamental plants. Seedling quality depends on several factors, among these factors, the substrate is highlighted. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of substrates based on bagana of carnauba, in the production of Ruellia simplex seedlings, by vegetative propagation. A completely randomized design was adopted, with six treatments and four replications. The treatments (substrates) were composed of bagana of carnauba (BC) and soil, in the following proportions: BC0 - 0% BC + 100% of soil; BC20 - 20% BC + 80% of soil; BC40 - 40% BC + 60% of soil; BC60 - 60% BC + 40% of soil; BC80 - 80% BC + 20% of soil; BC100 - 100% BC + 0% of soil. The plot consisted of a plant. After 45 days of cutting, it was evaluated: number of shoots; number of leaves per shoot; diameter of the highest shoot; length of the highest shoot; root length; inflorescence number; number of flowers per inflorescence; leaf area; root volume; aerial part fresh mass; root system fresh mass; aerial part dry mass; and root system dry mass. There was a significant difference for the variables, number of leaves per shoot, diameter and length of the highest shoot, number of flowers per inflorescence, fresh and dry mass of the aerial part. Having a direct relationship between the increase in the proportion of bagana of carnauba volume and the inflorescence number, the substrate 100% of bagana of carnauba is indicated.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to evaluate the proline synthesis and physiological response of cassava genotypes which were micro propagated and induced to salinity stress in vitro. Micro cuttings of approximately 1.0cm long with a single bud of genotypes TBRS Tapioqueira, BRS Verdinha and Lagoão which were previously established in vitro were inoculated in a MS medium containing different concentrations of NaCl (0; 25; 50; 75; 100mM) and were analyzed after 90th day for: number of roots, number of leaves and shoot dry mass. The proline content of BRS Tapioqueira and Lagoão was assessed at 30th, 60th and 90th day. There was no analysis of proline of the variety Verdinha because of the contamination of the explants. The experimental design was completely randomized in double factorial scheme (3 genotypes x 5 salt treatments), with seven repetitions for growth variables. For comparing proline content, completely randomized design was used in a plot subdivided in time, with genotype and NaCl factors in plot and time in subplot, with two repetitions. For r time and genotypes Tukey test (P<0,05) was used and for NaCl levels regression test (P<0,05). Salinity affected the growth of all varieties; although, BRS Tapioqueira and BRS Verdinha were less affected by induced salt stress. There was an increase in the accumulation of proline from the salt increment, this synthesis of proline being a biochemical indicator of salt stress in cassava plants cultivated in vitro.
