The aim of this study was to determine the total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid content and antimicrobial activity of extracts obtained from cocoa pod husk, banana peel and pineapple peel. Banana peel had significantly highest total phenolic content (154.50 mg GAE/g) followed by pineapple peel (140.37 mg GAE/g) and cocoa pod husk (114.08 mg GAE/g). Antioxidant activity of these samples measured using DPPH assays. Banana peel showed significantly higher DPPH scavenging activity (95.74%) compared to pineapple peel (84.96%) and cocoa pod husk (68.33%). Pineapple peel resulted in significantly higher (44.19 ppm) ascorbic acid as measured using High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method compared to banana peel (28.56 ppm). Cocoa pod husk, banana peel and pineapple peel were observed for antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and penicillium. Samples extract at different concentrations in E. coli, S.aureus and penicillium-seeded Mueller-Hinton agar medium, resulted zone of inhibition after 24 h incubation in 37°C for bacteria and 72 h incubation in 28ºC. Banana peel at 20 and 25mg/ml against S.aureus resulted in zone of inhibition 9.67, 11.67 mm and cocoa pod husk with 8.00, 9.67 mm respectively. Cocoa pod husk at 15, 20 and 25mg/ml against E.coli resulted in zone of inhibition 7.33, 9.33 and 10.33 mm and banana peel with 6.67, 7.33 and 7.67 mm respectively. Pineapple peel does not showed any inhibition zone against tested bacteria and fungi.

Pineapple peel still contains an important amount of phenolic compounds and vitamins with valuable antioxidant activity. In this way, the aim of this study was the recovery of the bioactive compounds from pineapple peel using environmentally friendly and low-cost techniques, envisaging their application in food products. From the solid-liquid extraction conditions tested, the one delivering an extract with higher total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity was a single extraction step with a solvent-pineapple peel ratio of 1:1 (w/w) for 25 min at ambient temperature, using ethanol-water (80–20%) as a solvent. The resulting extract revealed a total phenolic content value of 11.10 ± 0.01 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry extract, antioxidant activity of 91.79 ± 1.98 µmol Trolox/g dry extract by the DPPH method, and 174.50 ± 9.98 µmol Trolox/g dry extract by the FRAP method. The antioxidant rich extract was subjected to stabilization by the spray drying process at 150 °C of inlet air temperature using maltodextrin (5% w/w) as an encapsulating agent. The results showed that the antioxidant capacity of the encapsulated compounds was maintained after encapsulation. The loaded microparticles obtained, which consist of a bioactive powder, present a great potential to be incorporated in food products or to produce bioactive packaging systems.

Background: Herbal medicine mostly contains wide range of chemical compounds responsible for medicinal therapeutic use. Costus woodsonii is commonly called as Red Button Ginger and synonyms of the botanical name are Costus spiralis, Alpinia spiralis and Costus pisonis. In Malay, it is known as Setawar Halia Merah. In Chinese, it is known as Hong Bi Qiao Jiang. Objective: This research was conducted to study the pharmacognostical, phytochemical, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of C. woodsonii leaf extracts. Method: Macroscopy, microscopy, phytochemical analysis, thin layer chromatography, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity of C. woodsonii leaf were carried out. Total flavonoids were estimated in the leaf extract. The total phenolic content of C. woodsonii leaf was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antioxidant activity of leaf extract of C. woodsonii was determined by performing DPPH radical scavenging. The microbial activity was determined by Well diffusion test, MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) test and MBC (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration) test. Result and Discussion: C. woodsonii belongs to costaceae with elliptical green leaves. Till now are no extensive studies on C. woodsonii. Preliminary phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoid, steroid, fat, phenol, tannin and mucilage in leaf extract. Physicochemical studies further revealed the ash value of leaf as 8.7%. Among the three extractions, alcohol extractive values showed the highest as 13%. Loss on drying at 105 degree Celsius in leaf was found to be 12.67%. The plant extract showed total phenolic content of 7.941 mg GAE/g at concentration of 5µg/ml. As for flavonoids content, plant extract showed 21.7 mg RE/g at concentration of 200µg/ml and 43.4 mg RE/g at concentration of 400µg/ml. For antioxidant activity, the plant extract showed weak antioxidant activity in DPPH scavenging activity assay. For antimicrobial test, the leaf extract of C. woodsonii showed weak antimicrobial activity. Conclusion: From this study, it can conclude that C. woodsonii leaf extract possess weak antioxidant activity and weak antimicrobial activity which need to be further validated by using more antioxidant assays and antimicrobial tests.

The antioxidant activity and content of phenolic substances in vegetable broths were determined. Green beans, beetroots, courgettes, onions, parsley, carrots, cabbages, celery, broccoli, spinach, cauliflowers, and tomatoes were subjected to boiling. Fresh vegetables and vegetable broths were analysed for ascorbic acid content, total phenolic content, ORAC and TEAC values. Phenolic acids were quantified using HPLC. The ascorbic acid content of vegetables ranged from 5–109 mg/100 ml, while no ascorbic acids could be detected in vegetable broths. Total phenolic content was between 17–1729 mg GAE/l for all samples. ORAC and TEAC values of vegetable broths were between 0–3 µmol TE/ml and 0–2 µmol TE/ml, respectively. Gallic, chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric, and ferulic acid were detected in both fresh vegetables and vegetable broths. The highest phenolic acid content was observed in water in which beetroots were boiled. It was found that the vegetable broths of beetroots, celery stalks, cabbages, parsley and broccoli harboured remarkable antioxidant activity.

Abstract Cadaba farinosa is used in traditional medicine for treatment of cancer, diabetes, and rheumatism. The research was aimed at evaluating the phytochemical and antioxidant activity of the extracts. The powdered stem bark was extracted successively with the aid of Soxhlet extractor using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The resulting extracts were concentrated on rotary evaporator and the percentage yields were calculated. The phytochemical and TLC profiles of the extracts were studied. The antioxidant activity of the extracts and ascorbic acid (standard) were determined using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical assay. The total phenolic content of the extracts and tannic acid (standard) were evaluated using Folin–Ciocalteu reagent. The percentage yields of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts were found to be 1.19, 1.37, and 13.93%, respectively. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, saponins, cardiac glycosides, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. The TLC profiles of the extracts revealed the presence of compounds as evidenced from their R f values. The total phenolic content of ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were found to be 135 and 112 mg, respectively. The free radical scavenging activity demonstrated by the extracts was comparable to ascorbic acid. The ethyl acetate extract had higher phenolic content and demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging with IC50 31.07 mg/mL. The results of research have provided strong preliminary evidence of antioxidant activity which may be because of phenolic compounds in the extracts.

Rosa gallica var. aegyptiaca is a species of flowering plant belonging to the Rosaceae family that plays an important role as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of specific types of cancer, microbial infections, and diabetes mellitus. This work presents the first report on the evaluation of the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential along with the phytochemical analysis of Rosa gallica var. aegyptiaca leaves. Five leaf extracts of hexane, chloroform, methanol, hydromethanol 80%, and water were prepared. Assessment of antioxidant activity was carried out via DPPH radical scavenging assay. Antimicrobial activity against five foodborne pathogenic bacteria—including Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enteritidis—and the fungus Candida albicans, was examined using the disc diffusion method. Total phenolic content and total flavonoid content were determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent and aluminum chloride methods, respectively. Isolation, identification, and quantification of phenolic compounds were performed using HPLC-DAD analysis. Amongst the five leaf extracts that were investigated, hydromethanol 80% extract possessed the highest extraction yield, antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, and antimicrobial activity against all tested microbial strains. Moreover, this extract furnished six active phenolic compounds: gallic acid (1), (+) catechin (2), chlorogenic acid (3), (–) epicatechin (4), quercetin-3-O-α-d-(glucopyranoside) (5), and quercetin (6). This study provides an alternative utilization of R. gallica var. aegyptiaca leaves as a readily accessible source of natural antioxidants and antimicrobials in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Honey, a natural healing agent and a sweet food, has been used since ancient times. A honey sample could possess many biological activities depending on its chemical composition. The amount and the diversity of these minor components of honey mainly depend on the floral sources. That is why the biological activity of the honey sample obtained in a region should be determined. In this study, total phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, melissopalynological analyses and antimicrobial activity of twenty honey samples obtained from Doganyol, Malatya, Turkey were examined. In order to determine the in vitro antibacterial activity of honey samples, the agar well diffusion (AWD) method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays were used. For this purpose, ten Gram-positive bacteria and eight Gram-negative bacteria were used. Total phenolic content was found in the range from 9.68 ± 0.72 to 29.40 ± 1.03 mg GAE g<sup>–1</sup> sample. Antioxidant activity of honey samples varied from 2.21 ± 0.46 to 6.03 ± 1.11 µmol FeSO<sub>4</sub> 7H<sub>2</sub>O g<sup>–1</sup>. Honey samples showed moderate antimicrobial activity against tested microorganisms, especially against Gram-positive bacteria. It could be concluded from our findings that there is a good correlation between total phenolic content and the biological activity of honey samples.

Utilization of new or unusual sources of nutrients has led to a wider market regarding food product diversity. The utilization of alfalfa in food products leads to an increase in nutrients as proteins, from macro elementary point of view and in polyphenols, chlorophylls, and carotenoids if is to look in the micro elementary system. The present paper proposes the increase of the bioavailability of alfalfa powder by adding in a raw vegan chocolate. Characteristics as total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, FTIR fingerprint, and antimicrobial activity were investigated.

Elaeocarpus ganitrus (Rudrakshya) is an evergreen tree found in tropical and sub-tropical regions and has been commonly used in traditional medicine against various diseases. In the present study, phytochemical constituents, antimicrobial activity and antioxidant property of seed of Elaeocarpus ganitrus have been evaluated in hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol extracts. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, steroids, carbohydrates, saponins, terpenoids etc. The antibacterial test showed a significant zone of inhibition against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus with the maximum zone of inhibition of 20 mm. The study showed that these extracts can be used as antimicrobial substances against various bacteria. Antioxidant activity of the methanol, acetone and ethyl acetate extract were studied by DPPH radical scavenging assay. The extracts showed significant antioxidant activity. Among the IC50 values of different extracts on DPPH assay for antioxidant determination, methanol seed extract showed the lowest value of 28.09 µg/mL. This means methanol extract of seed showed the significantly high antioxidant properties. Calculation of total phenolic content showed a significant amount of phenolic content in different solvent extracts. Methanol seed extract showed the highest total phenolic content of 174.6 mgGAE/g. Similarly, methanol seed extract showed the highest total flavonoid content of 107.13 mgQE/g. These results suggest that the seeds of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus (Rudrakshya) plant from the Ilam district of Nepal possess high antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and thus, the plant can be used in the discovery of new bioactive natural products.

Background: Antioxidants are those compounds which scavengers the free radicals, widely used in health protection and prescribed on large scale in biomedical health care units. In homeopathic system of medicine mother tinctures are prescribed. Mother tinctures of medicinal plants are having the potential to treat the various acute and chronic ailments. Objectives: The present study was accompanied to determine the total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of homeopathic mother tincture of plant origin i.e. Baptisia tinctoria, Berberis aquifolium, Echinacea angustifolia, Hydrangea arborescens, Hydrastis canadensis, Kreosotum, and Thuja occidentalis in comparison with ascorbic acid. Methods: Antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) inhibition assay method. A volume of 0.1 mM solution of DPPH was used while mother tinctures (1.25, 5, 2.5 μl volumes) were used for evaluation of antioxidant activity. Ascorbic acid was taken as a standard control and alcohol as negative control in antioxidant activity protocol. Total phenolic content was measured by Folin–Ciocalteu reagent assay. Total phenolic content of mother tinctures was measured in comparison with ascorbic acid. Results: All tested homeopathic mother tinctures of plant origin showed significant antioxidant potential except Hydrangea arborescens and Kreosotum. Alcohol which was used as negative control exhibited no antioxidant activity. Pulsatilla nigricans possess highest antioxidant potential 85±0.3 among other tested mother tinctures against DPPH free radical and 98.8±2 maximum no of phenolic contents. Conclusion: Homeopathic Mother Tinctures of plant origin showed antioxidant activity due to presence of phenolic content.
