Intensive renewal of the socio-economic, scientific and technical spheres and the spiritual life of society determines high requirements for the capacity of the individual. Graduates of higher educational institutions determine the future of our country, so they must not only have a high level of professional readiness, but also be physically enduring, efficient and healthy. These personality traits are formed and improved during the student years by means of physical education. Physical education in higher educational institutions is an integral part of education. The level of their physical development and health depends on the quality of the organization and conduct of classes with students. At present, the health of the younger generation is of serious concern. Numerous works of modern researchers point to an increase in the level of diseases and focus on a decrease in the functional resistance of the body of students to physical activity. The subject of the research is the methodology of using means of physical culture and health-improving orientation in physical education classes. The aim of the research is to determine the influence of physical culture and health-improving orientation classes on the physical fitness of first-year students. Research objectives: to conduct an analysis of scientific and methodological literature and advanced pedagogical experience in relation to the topic under study; to determine the level of physical fitness of female students, using complex testing and to reveal the dynamics of indicators of physical fitness; to develop a program of physical education classes to improve the level of physical fitness and health of female students; to experimentally check the developed training methodology and determine its feasibility of introducing it into the educational process in physical education. In the course of organizing and conducting a scientific experiment, the following methods were used: analysis and generalization of scientific and methodological literature, pedagogical observations, control testing, mathematical processing of results. The study involved first-year students who study at the National University "Odesa Law Academy" and do not play sports. In the course of the experiment, a program of physical education classes was developed, which included sets of exercises for the development of physical qualities, as well as a health-improving orientation. These complexes were used in each physical education lesson twice a week on a schedule. The study made it possible to draw the following conclusions. The analysis of the results shows that at the initial stage of the research the majority of female students showed low results in all the tests. After conducting classes according to our methodology, at the second stage of the experiment, the results for some tests improved significantly. Thus, the proposed program of health related training had a positive impact on the results of physical fitness of female students.

The study focuses on the lability and adaptability of the central nervous system of residents of Moscow and Moscow region aged 65 and older. All examinees regularly practised various types of physical activity, such as Nordic walking, cycling, Qigong gymnastics, etc. The functional state of the central nervous system of the examinees was studied using the Psychophysiologist hardware-software system by determining simple visual-motor reaction (SVMR), complex visual-motor reaction (CVMR), reaction to a moving object (RMO). Based on the analysis of speed and stability of sensorimotor reactions in response to light stimuli and moving object we made an express-evaluation of the level of functional state of the central nervous system, sensorimotor reactions, quality of activity, balance of inhibition and excitation processes. As a result of the study, the optimal level of CNS functioning was registered in most of the examinees. Activation of the central nervous system in the majority of the examinees is at an average level, the average level of operative efficiency is noted. The results of the study indicate a shift in the balance of nervous processes in the examinees towards inhibition.

The article considers the processes of quantitative measurement of the level of somatic health of first year students within adapting period to the educational environment of the University. The aim of the study is to assess the dynamics of the state of students’ somatic health in different periods of training. The study involved 68 students of the main and preparatory groups of the 1st year of the Volgograd State Technical University faculty of Economics and management, with an average age of 18.6±0.76 years. The results of diagnostics and evaluation of physical development, level of physical fitness and functional state of technical University students are presented. The study was organized on the basis of scientific papers in the field of adaptation processes and somatic health R.M. Baevsky (1979), G.L. Apanasenko (1988), N.M. Amosov (1998), E.N. Weiner (2001). Physical fitness testing was based on the use of testing and scoring standards of the curriculum of the Department of physical education. For a comprehensive evaluation of the physical condition E.A. Pirogova’s method was used (1986). The evaluation parameters of somatic health of first year students has changed relative to the periods of study. The lowest rates were observed in the period of admission to the University by the end of the school year, the average during the session, while high — after a period of rest over the holidays. As a result, conclusions are drawn about the need to monitor health factors in order to prevent failures of adaptive indicators that lead to disease. This kind of research monitoring should become a mandatory and permanent event in physical education classes at the University.

The problem of determining the physical fitness of 1st year students and identifying their risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the first stage of physical education before the students’ medical examination is considered. During the analysis of literature sources, test tasks were selected in order to investigate and assess the level of physical fitness of students according to the methodology proposed by the Jyvaskyla University (Finland) and the risk of cardiovascular disease according to A. Z. Zapesochny’s methodology. 670 first-year students participated in the study. The assignment to evaluate fitness levels consisted of recording the walking time at a maximal pace over a 2 km distance and determining the post-exercise heart rate. The evaluation of the results was performed against the fitness level index. When testing according to Zapesochny’s methodology, the following indicators characterising risk factors for cardiovascular disease were considered: body weight and length, gender, blood pressure, hereditary factors, bad habits and physical activity. All the results, which were evaluated in scores, were combined to calculate the cardiovascular disease development risk level. An analysis of the results showed that 32.24% of first year students had a high level of physical fitness and only 8.21% had a low level. In 48.07% of the tested persons, the risk of cardiovascular diseases was absent. The explicit and maximum risk observed in 2.98% of the tested persons. This data helped in the first stage of physical education to select an appropriate physical activity for the students without risk of harm to their health prior to undergoing medical check-up.

A continual pressure within the educational system in Indonesia to focus on high levels of academic achievement is a major barrier to implementing an effective physical education curriculum in Indonesia. The conflict between the implementation of a movement based approach (MBA) and a sport based approach (SBA) presents another continuing problem. The current approach leads more to an orientation towards the acquisition of sport skills rather than the attainment of objectives of cognitive development. This study is aimed to reveal the association between the physical fitness and academic achievement of children in Sumedang, West Java. Four physical fitness test items and a specially constructed mathematics test were administered to 265 children from grades four and five. The ability of performance on the physical fitness tests to predict performance in mathematics was calculated by linear multipleregression analysis. The findings revealed that there was a significant association, although low, between the physical fitness components and mathematics achievement. Sit ups and squat jumps showed low partial correlations and the relationships for push ups and the 400 metre run were negative Limitations in the ability of the children to perform the tests were suggested as an explanation for the mixed results. It was argued that this weakness served to emphasise the importance of giving greater priority to physical education and the quality of its teaching within the school curriculum.
