Introduction: Colostomy imposed multiple impacts on the patient’s life including physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. This study aims to identify the level of quality of life as well as to examine the differences of quality of life among colostomy patients with regards to certain demographic characteristics. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional and descriptive analytical approach. Seventy-one colostomy patients were recruited purposively to participate in the study. The studied variables included quality of life and demographic characteristics. The data was collected by using the WHO Quality of Life – BREF instrument. One-way ANOVA and an independent t-test were employed to analyse the differences in quality of life with regards to certain demographic characteristics. Results: The study found that the majority of subjects perceived that their level of quality of life ranged between very low to moderate (77.4%). Satisfaction with support from friends was rated as the highest item of quality of life, whereas satisfaction with sexual relationships was rated as the lowest item of quality of life. There was no significant difference in the patients’ quality of life with regards to age group, educational background, occupation, length of being ostomate, sex, and other health problems. Conclusions: The study implied that nurses need to realise and pay attention to multiple aspects of stoma patient’s quality of life. Nursing care should not merely focus on stoma care but also holistically consider on meeting sexual needs, as well as the psychological, social, and spiritual needs of the patients.

Introduction. The quality of life is a multidimensional concept, which is best expressed by the subjective well-being. Evaluation of the quality of life is the basis for measuring the well-being, and the determination of factors that determine the quality of life quality is the basis for its improvement Objective. To evaluate and assess the determinants of the perceived quality of life of group distinguishing features which characterize demographic and socioeconomic factors. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study of a representative sample of the population in Serbia aged over 20 years (9479 examinees). The quality of life was expressed by the perception of well-being (pleasure of life). Data on the examinees (demographic and socioeconomic characteristics) were collected by using a questionnaire for adults of each household. To process, analyze and present the data, we used the methods of parametric descriptive statistics (mean value, standard deviation, coefficient of variation), variance analysis and factor analysis. Results. Although men evaluated the quality of life with a slightly higher grading, there was no statistically significant difference in the evaluation of the quality of life in relation to the examinee?s gender (p>0.005). Among the examinees there was a high statistically significant difference in grading the quality of life depending on age, level of education, marital status and type of job (p<0.001). In relation to the number of children, there was no statistically significant difference in he grading of the quality of life (p>0.005). Conclusion. The quality of life is influenced by numerous factors that characterize each person (demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of individual). Determining factors of the quality of life are numerous and diverse, and the manner and the strength of their influence are variable.

Abstract Background: A proper sexual functioning and a satisfying intimate relationship is one of the components for a high quality of life (QoL). However, sexuality among the chronically and/or those who suffer from mental illnesses are not a widely researched or discussed topic. The aim of the study is to explore the association among brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS), QoL, Taiwanese depression questionnaire (TDQ), sexual desire (SD) in people with schizophrenia (PwS).Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with 277 psychiatric inpatients. A descriptive analysis, difference analysis and logistic regression model were presented to identify relevant variables that may affect the probability of good QoL. Finally, we used structure equation model to explore the association of BPRS, TDQ, SD and QoL. Results: The mean age of the sample was 43.82±8.43 years old. Quality of life has no significant difference in the obesity and gender of PwS, but male PwS had higher scores of SD than female PwS. For participants with smoking, early illness onset age, shorter illness duration there was a significant higher SD. The logistic regression analysis showed BPRS, depression and SD significantly affected the probability of QoL. By SEM, SD would be positivity correlated with mental status and that SD would indirectly influence QoL. Conclusions: Our results showed that the QoL and SD of the PwS are often associated with interaction between psychological and sociological factors. This study also supports the idea of a close relationship between SD, depression and BPRS. Besides, these factors may predict the probability of good life quality for the PwS.

Objectives: Quality of work life (QWL) is an important indicator of job-related satisfaction among nurses; however, there is little information regarding the QWL of nurses in Oman. Therefore, this study aimed to explore factors affecting QWL among nurses working in governmental health institutions in Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate, Oman. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between September and November 2018 at 29 governmental health institutions in Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate. A total of 374 nurses employed at these institutions were recruited via stratified random sampling. A demographic questionnaire incorporating Brooks’ Quality of Nursing Work scale was used to collect data. Results: A total of 345 nurses participated in the study (response rate: 92.2%). The mean age was 33.3 ± 5.1 years and the majority were female (90.7%), married (88.7%), of Omani nationality (70.1%) and had a diploma degree (70.7%). Overall, the nurses demonstrated moderate levels of QWL (mean total score: 179.99 ± 24.17). Both job designation and nationality were found to be significant predictors of QWL (P = 0.041 and <0.001, respectively). Conclusion: The findings of this study represent a baseline for further research on this important topic. As with all healthcare professionals, the QWL of nurses indirectly affects quality of patient care and associated health outcomes. As such, identifying areas of poor QWL among nurses can help in the development of initiatives to improve their professional satisfaction, thereby enhancing job performance and employee retention.
