The study was conducted to identify phenotypic characteristics of Lombok Muscovy ducks. A total of 100 adult male and 100 adult female Muscovy ducks. The research location was determined by purposive random sampling, while the determination of farmers and Muscovy ducks was done incidentally. Observations were made on each Muscovy duck by observing the color, body weight and size of body parts. The body size data were tabulated, averaged, and then analyzed descriptively; meanwhile, the plumage color data were calculated in frequency. To find the relation between size of body parts and body weight, data were analyzed using simple regression. The study found that the male Muscovy ducks had two plumage characteristics, consisting of white and black-white, both shared the same frequencies, while in the female Muscovy ducks, white color was more dominant compared to the black-white color. The colors of the beak were divided into two i.e., black with a white color in the middle and reddish-white with pink colors in the middle. The size of Lombok Muscovy ducks was rather small in comparison with the other Muscovy ducks. The size of male duck was larger than that of the female.

The purpose of the work is to determine and analyze the peculiarities of correlations between the constitutional parameters of the body and personality indicators of practically healthy Ukrainian women of the first mature age. Primary anthropo-somatotypological (anthropometric examination according to the scheme of V. V. Bunak, determination of somatotype – according to the mathematical scheme of J. Carter and B. Heath; determination of fat, bone and muscle components of body weight – according to the formulas of J. Matiegka, determination of muscular components of body weight – according to the method of the American Institute of Nutrition) and indicators of personality (leading typological characteristics of temperament according to Eysenck, psychodynamic features of personality according to Spielberger, indicators of severity and features of accentuated personality traits according to Shmishek, indicators of subjective control according to Rotter) of 101 practically healthy Ukrainian women of the first mature age were selected from the data bank of materials of the research center of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya. The analysis of correlations between anthropo-somatotypological indicators and indicators of personality traits was performed in the licensed package "Statistica 6.1" using the statistical method of Pearson. Between anthropo-somatotypological indicators and indicators of personality traits of practically healthy Ukrainian women, mostly single weak-strength feedback and direct reliable correlations have been established. In most cases, the feedback is established with the leading typological characteristics of temperament according to Eysenck, psychodynamic features of personality according to Spielberger and indicators of severity and features of accentuated personality traits according to Shmishek, and direct – with indicators of subjective control according to Rotter. The multiple nature of the relationship only between the rate of accentuation of the character of the exalted type according to Shmishek with most indicators of the width of the distal epiphyses of the limbs and the size of the pelvis; between the level of subjective control in the field of failures according to Rotter with half the longitudinal sizes of the body; between the indicator of situational (reactive) anxiety according to Spielberger, or the indicator of accentuation of the character of the cyclothymic type according to Shmishek with all the girths of the chest. Quantitative analysis of significant correlations between anthropo-somatotypological indicators and indicators of personality traits of practically healthy Ukrainian women revealed the largest relative percentage of reliable correlations of anthropo-somatotypological indicators. Namely, with the leading typological characteristics of temperament according to Eysenck, the largest relative percentage of reliable relationships was established with transverse body size and somatotypological indicators; with psychodynamic features of the personality according to Spielberger – with somatotypological indicators; with indicators of severity and features of accentuated personality traits according to Shmishek – with longitudinal body dimensions, cephalometric indicators and width of distal epiphyses of extremities; with indicators of the level of subjective control according to Rotter – with longitudinal body size and somatotypological indicators.

1. The O2 consumption and CO2 release of nine giant tortoises Testudo gigantea (weight range 118 g-35·5 kg) were measured at a temperature of about 25·5°C. Four European tortoises Testudo hermanni (weight range 640 g-2·16 kg) were also used. The mean RQ values obtained were 1·01 for T. gigantea and 0·97 for T. hermanni. These values were not influenced by activity or size. 2. The data was analysed by plotting log/log regression lines relating body weight to O2 consumption. Both maximum and minimum metabolic rates recorded for each individual T. gigantea showed a negative correlation with body weight. For active rates the relation was O2 consumption = 140·8W0·97, whereas for inactive animals O2 consumption = 45·47W0·82. 3. The maximum rates were obtained from animals that were observed to be active in the respirometer and the minimum rates from animals that remained quiet throughout. The scope for activity increased with body size, being 82 ml/kg/h for animals of 100 g and 103 ml/kg/h for 100 kg animals. The corresponding ratio between maximum and minimum rates increases from about 2 to 6 for the same weight range. 4. Values for metabolic rate in T. hermanni seem to be rather lower than in T. gigantea. Analysis of the relative proportion of the shell and other organs indicates that the shell forms about 31% of the body weight in adult T. hermanni but only about 18% in T. gigantea of similar size. The shell is not appreciably heavier in adult T. gigantea (about 20%). 5. Data obtained for inactive animals is in good agreement with results of other workers using lizards and snakes. Previous evidence suggesting that chelonians show no reduction in metabolic rate with increasing size is not considered to conflict with data obtained in the present work.

The study aimed at describing objectively the interdependence between body weight (BWT) and morphometric traits in Khaki Campbell and Pekin ducks using multivariate path analysis technique. Measurements were taken on one hundred and ninety seven (197) randomly selected 10-week old Khaki Campbell and Pekin ducks, respectively in Plateau State, Nigeria. The birds were reared on deep litter in a semi-intensive system where they were kept in a fenced area provided with water ponds and locked up in the poultry house during the night. The body parts measured were, body length (BDL); thigh length (THL); thigh circumference (THC); breast circumference (BTC); bill length (BLL); neck length (NKL); neck circumference (NKC); shank length (SHL); shank width (SHW); total leg length (TLL) and wing length (WL). General linear model was used to study genotype and sex effects. Pekin ducks had a superior advantage (p<0.05) over their Khaki Campbell counterparts in all the body parameters estimated. Sexual dimorphism (p<0.05) was in favour of male ducks.  Pairwise phenotypic correlations between BWT and morphometric traits were positive and significant (p<0.01), ranging from 0.38-0.95 and 0.35-0.92 for Khaki Campbell and Pekin ducks, respectively. Path analysis revealed that BDL was the variable of utmost importance directly influencing BWT in male Khaki Campbell and Pekin ducks (path coefficient=0.535 and 0.508, respectively; p<0.01) while BTC and SHL were the most responsible parameters affecting BWT in female Khaki Campbell and Pekin ducks [path coefficient=0.594 (P<0.01) and 1.197 (p<0.05), respectively]. The optimum regression models for the prediction of BWT in Khaki Campbell ducks included BDL, SHL, BTC and NKC (male)  and BDL, WNL and BTC (female); while in their Pekin counterparts, BDL, BLL and BTC (male) and BDL and SHL (female) were incorporated.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjas.v44i1.23112            Bang. Abstract In stock farming, the body size parameters and weight of yaks can reasonably reflect the growth and development characteristics, production performance and genetic characteristics of yaks. However, it is difficult for herders to measure the body size and weight of yaks by traditional manual methods. Fortunately, with the development of edge computing, herders can use mobile devices to estimate the yak’s body size and weight. The purpose of this paper is to provide a machine vision-based yak weight estimation method for the edge equipment and establish a yak estimation comprehensive display system based on the user’s use of the edge equipment in order to maximize the convenience of herdsmen’s work. In our method, a set of yak image foreground extraction and measurement point recognition algorithm suitable for edge equipment were developed to obtain yak’s measurement point recognition image, and the ratio between body sizes was transmitted to the cloud server. Then, the body size and weight of yaks were estimated using the data mining method, and the body size estimation data were constantly displayed in the yak estimation comprehensive display system. 25 yaks in different age groups were randomly selected from the herd to perform experiments. The experimental results show that the foreground extraction method can obtain segmentation image with good boundary, and the yak measurement point recognition algorithm has good accuracy and stability. The average error between the estimated values and the actual measured values of body height, oblique length, chest depth, cross height and body weight is 1.95%, 3.11%, 4.91%, 3.35% and 7.79%, respectively. Compared with the traditional manual measurement method, the use of mobile end to estimate the body size and weight of yaks can improve the measurement efficiency, facilitate the herdsmen to breed yaks, reduce the stimulation of manual measurement on yaks, and lay a solid foundation for the fine breeding of yaks in Sanjiangyuan region.

1. Mass selection for both high- and low-ratio of wing to thorax length has been carried out on a population of Drosophila melanogaster. The response to selection was immediate and sustained. When the experiment was stopped after ten generations, the wing area in the two selected lines differed by about 30%. The heritability estimate worked out at 0·56 ± 0·08.2. Thorax length remained comparatively unchanged during selection nor was there any change in wing shape. There was some evidence of assymetry of response since there was a relatively greater change in favour of smaller rather than larger size.3. The tibia length of all pairs of legs showed correlated changes so that the lines with larger or smaller wing sizes had also larger and smaller legs.4. The normal allometric relation between wing and thorax length, associated with variation in body-size, apparently also changed, so that for a given change in thorax length there was a greater or smaller proportional change in wing size in the high- or low-ratio lines.5. The changes in relative wing size are due to changes in cell number.6. It is suggested that the genetic changes due to selection act in the early pupal period when the imaginal discs are undergoing differentiation and proliferation to form imaginal hypoderm and appendages.7. Tests of genetic behaviour failed to show any departure from additivity in crosses which involved the unselected population and the high-ratio line. But highly significant departures existed in the cross to the low-ratio line. Relatively smaller wing size behaves as largely recessive. Stability of the normal wing/thorax ratio involves dominance and probably also epistasis. The genetic properties of the relative size of the appendage are apparently similar to those which characterize body-size as a whole.8. It is suggested that selection provides a valuable tool for studying the constancy or lability of the growth patterns which determine morphology.

Weight measurement is essential for the management of pediatric patients to calculate the dose of the drugs. But it is not possible to move the child to a weighing scale for determination of body weight when the child is in a critical condition. The purpose of this study was to check if foot length correlates with child’s body weight in our situation and to devise a formula for prediction of weight based on foot– length observed. This Cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Pediatrics, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Mitford hospital, Dhaka over a period of 12 months between January 2008 and December 2008. A total of 300 children, between 0 day to five years, meeting the predefined eligibility criteria were included in the study. Using the available data, simple linear regression analysis was performed between the dependent variable weight and independent variable foot length. The estimated linear regression line was: Predicted weight (kg) = a+ [b× foot length]. Data were analyzed using correlation coefficient (r) between foot length and children’s weight. In this study correlation between foot length and weight (r) was 0.92(P<0.001) indicating a perfect linear relationship between them. In the present study determination of correlation (r2) was 0.85 meaning that 85% of the variability in weight might be explained by variation in foot length. The estimated linear regression line was: Predicted weight (kg) = - 4.64 + [1.12 X foot length], where- 4.64 was the intercept and 1.12 was the slope of the regression line. Comparison between measured weight and predicted weight revealed that94% of variation between measured weight and predicted weight was within ±2kg. More than half of the cases (58.3%) the above-mentioned variations were within ±1kg.  This study concluded, there was a strong correlation between foot length and weight in children up to five years. The body weight in children from 0 days up to the age of 5 years can be predicted from foot length. Prediction of weight simply by foot-length measurement could be a great help to the health care provider including doctors and health workers for drug dose calculation in critically ill children. The body size of aquatic invertebrates is, to a great extent, dependent on ambient temperature, but size distributions are also determined by other factors like food supply and predation. The effect of temperature on organisms is formulated in the temperature–size hypothesis, which predicts a smaller body size with increasing temperature. In this study, the effect of temperature on the subfossil remains of three littoral Cladocera (Alona affnis, A. quadrangularis, and Chydorus cf. sphaericus) was investigated. Exoskeletal remains of these species can be found in large numbers in lacustrine sediments and over a wide north–south range in Europe. The total length of both headshield and postabdomen for A. affinis and A. quadrangularis and carapace length for C. cf. sphaericus were measured to observe their response to changes in latitude and temperature. A different response to ambient temperature in the growth of body parts was observed. The size of the headshields of both Alona species and of the carapace of Chydorus was significantly larger in colder regions as opposed to warm ones. It turned out that the postabdomen was not a good predictor of ambient temperature. While the sizes of all remains increased with latitude, the sizes of the Alona remains was smaller in the mountain lakes of the Southern Carpathians than in other cold lakes, in this case in Finland, a fact indicative of the importance of other factors on size distribution. This study demonstrates that a morphological response to climate is present in littoral cladocerans, and, therefore, changes in the length of headshield and carapace may be used as a proxy for climate changes in paleolimnological records.

Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di 3 desa yang berbeda di Kecamatan Indrapuri, Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Penelitian berlangsung selama 30 hari yang dimulai dari tanggal 18 Februari - 19 Maret 2017. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi ukuran tubuh turunan sapi aceh pada umur sapih dengan sisitem pemeliharaan yang berbeda. Materi  yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah anak sapi Aceh lepas sapih sebanyak 24 ekor. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode observasi yaitu dengan cara mengukur ternak turunan sapi Aceh lepas sapih tersebut. Penentuan desa dengan mempertimbangkan adanya sistem pemeliharaan sapi secara ekstensif dan intensif dan jumlah ternak sapi lepas sapih terpenuhi untuk pengambilan sampel. Parameter yang diamati dalam penelitian ini adalah lingkar dada, panjang badan, dan tinggi pundak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ukuran lingkar dada turunan sapi Aceh pada umur sapih yang di pelihara dengan system intensif menunjukkan ukuran yang lebih tinggi di bandingkan dengan ukuran lingkar dada yang dipelihara dengan system pemeliharaan ekstensif dan pada pengukuran panjang badan dan tinggi gumba turunan sapi Aceh yang di pelihara dengan system ekstensif menunjukkan ukuran yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan ukuran  panjang badan dan tinggi gumba yang di pelihara dengan sistem intensifEvaluation of Body Size of Aceh Cow Beans with Different Maintenance System in Indrapuri Sub-district, Aceh BesarThis research was conducted in 3 different villages in Indrapuri Sub-district, Aceh Besar District. The study lasted for 30 days starting from February 18 to March 19, 2017. This study aims to evaluate the body size of aceh cows at the weaning age with different maintenance systems. The material used in this study is Aceh calf off weeds as much as 24 tail. This research method using the observation method that is by measuring the cattle of Aceh cattle derivatives off the weaning. Determination of the village taking into account the existence of an extensive and intensive cattle breeding system and the number of loose weaning cattle is fulfilled for sampling. Parameters observed in this study were chest circumference, body length, and shoulder height. The results showed that the size of the chest circumference of cows of Aceh cattle at the age of weaning with intensive care system showed a higher size in comparison with the size of the chest circumference maintained with extensive maintenance system and on the measurement of the length and height of the gumba derived from Aceh cows Extensive systems show a higher size compared to the size of the body length and height of the gumba maintained in an intensive system

SUMMARYBody weight was studied from birth to 5½ years of age and six linear measures of body size from birth to 4¼ years for sheep of five breeds, Scottish Blackface, Cheviot, Welsh Mountain, Lincoln Longwool and Southdown, and of crosses of these breeds with each other and with the Tasmanian Merino, but not in all possible combinations. The sheep were run as a single flock. Numbers ranged from 753 at birth to 150 at the end of the experimental period.There were marked differences among the breeds and crosses in all aspects of body size and some differences in rate of maturity. They also differed in conformation independently of body weight. Crosses of the hill breeds with the Lincoln and probably with the Southdown were heavier than the average of the parental breeds and larger in some linear body measurements from about weaning onwards. The weights of crosses of Blackface and Cheviot with Lincoln eventually exceeded those of the heavier parent of the cross. For the crosses among the three hill breeds only the Blackface Cheviot cross showed significant deviations from mid-parent values for weight and size.Maternal effects were important for all traits studied from birth to weaning and for weight up to a year old. In relation to mature size, Welsh dams produced the biggest and Lincoln the smallest lambs. The data did not permit Southdown maternal effects to be estimated. The effects of birth type and rearing were apparent for late maturing body parts up to a year old and for weight up to 3 years. Males, measured only from birth to weaning, were heavier and generally larger than females.Residual correlations between the various measures of size varied from 0·1 to 0·7.

Effects of rearing conditions of larvae on the body weight and flight duration of the light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker), were evaluated in the laboratory. The body weight of both male and female moths at emergence decreased with increasing temperature from 15 to 28-degrees-C during larval stages; in contrast, flight duration increased with rising temperature. There was no effect of larval density on flight duration, although the body weight of moths decreased as density increased. Variation in water content of artificial diet showed a significant influence on flight duration of female moths, but not on body weight in either sex. Flight duration was different only for females when their larvae were reared on young leaves of four host plants. Female moths from larvae on Rumex crispus and Plantago lanceolata flew for significantly longer periods than those from larvae on Trifolium repens and Pyrus malus. Larvae fed on young leaves yielded adults that flew for longer periods than those fed on senescent leaves. Inconsistency in relationships between body weight and flight duration of moths with respect to influences of different environmental factors during the larval stages indicates that flight capacity is unlikely to be influenced by body size in this species.
