Abstract In the text presented, I have undertaken an analysis of the early essays of Pär Lagerkvist (dated 1915-1917), both the ones published in periodicals and the unpublished manuscripts in the possession of the Kungliga Biblioteket in Stockholm. In those essays, Lagerkvist paid considerable attention to the matters of the ethics of art and the conflict between the ethical and aesthetical criteria of assessment of the work of art, and those problems are discussed also in Lagerkvist’s letters from that time. The aim of the article is to present this less known area of the artist’s activity and to point to the fact that the consequences of those reflections can be tracked in Lagerkvist’s literary works written in the same time period. Moreover, it can be argued that the understanding of the ethical art and the moral sense of the artistic activity presented in the early texts became an import and lasting feature of Lagerkvist’s writing - and, consequently, it can be claimed that the essays under discussion have a formative effect on Lagerkvist’s later output.

The figurative language employed by authors, which reflects their styles of writing, is one main reason behind the challenges that most literary translators encounter when dealing with literary works. Usually employed for aesthetic and poetic purposes, figures of speech imply connotative meanings. In literary works, words are used only assigns to settle down the flying spirits of meanings and ideas so that the audience can have a thread that could lead them to intended meanings. I believe that literary translators should face the challenges of translating literary works through two main approaches. First, transferring the work of art as it is without trying to find any equivalent in the target language for any piece of text in the source language. The aim of such type of translation would be familiarizing the audience in the target language with the literature and culture of the source language. Second, translating the SL work of art creatively, i.e. using all possible strategies and procedures to find natural equivalents in the TL for any stylistic features in the SLT. This type of translation should aim at pleasing and entertaining the TL audience.

When discussing the emergence of New Historicism in American scholarship, it is imperative to assess its origins and influences. Mikhail Bakhtin’s exploration of the multiples of languages within the novel and Michel Foucault’s analysis of the role of the author in texts both catapulted the development of New Historical scholarship. Today, this method of scholarship approaches the author as a non-autonomous agent subjected by the multiple social, political, and cultural forces of his or her era. Similarly, literature is perceived as an art form not unique from others and should be analyzed to point toward overarching power structures to the same degree as any other mode of representation. In considering the author as a social construct, many New Historicists neglect to perceive the author as a potential formulator or modifier of reigning ideology. The fact of the matter is that literature is able to shape the ideology of a society, not merely represent it. In viewing the author as a construct of his time period, critics fail to attempt to determine which literary works were revolutionary in their ability to manipulate and change a given society’s underlying modes of thinking and practice.

Characteristics of quality literary works must carry and convey moral messages. As a civilized citizen, the young generation — of course other citizens — must seize moral values in treading diverse lives. In this regard, literary engineering is an idea that should be taken into account as a form of literary approach in accordance with the mental development of the younger generation. How far is literary engineering capable as a new idea to introduce literature to the younger generation, that is the problem in this paper? This paper aims to describe and "sell" the role of literary literacy engineering to improve the literacy culture of the younger generation. The targets include the literary community and / or the community of young people, such as the youth organization, the literature literary forum, and the Student Council (intra-school student organization). This study used descriptive qualitative method. Based on the study of the theory of the younger generation (Stratus Howe) and the results of the analysis, this study shows that literary engineering can be used as a vehicle to improve literacy in the younger generation. Its activities can be in the form of literary rewriting in the form of student editions sourced from classical literary works such as Mahabharata, Ramayana, Siti Nurbaya novels, Salah Asuhan, or even folklore (folklore, folktale). These literary works can also be translated into literary / theater performances, soap operas, short stories, poems, or other forms. Conversely, the genre of poetry can also be "transformed" into other creative works in the form of poetry, fiction or literary / artistic performances. In addition, the work of teen literature is a way to familiarize literature with the younger generation. The success of the literacy movement is of course necessary and must be supported and collaborated with stakeholders, both government agencies, private institutions, art workers, parents, and / or literary practitioners. This literary or artistic activity is expected to be able to improve the literacy movement that is being promoted by the government as of now.

Art refers to the product of creative human activity in which concepts are shaped and selected to convey an idea or emotion. A short story is an art form, a particular type of artistic activity and a product of the author’s imagination. Unlike novels that usually depict conflicts among many characters, developed through a variety of episodes, stimulating a complexity of responses inreaders, a short story is a brief fictional narrative prose disclosing one character’s inner conflict with others having one thematic focus. It concisely presents events and stirs our imagination. Guru Prasad Mainali (1900-1971), one of the prominent writers and a leading personality in Nepali literature, develops the modern short story in Nepali language and becomes popular with a few stories. His most famous stories have been collected in The Ward (Naso) (1969) in which an elderly Brahman who has no children is obliged to marry a second wife in order to clear his way to paradise. He writes stories in a new model and each is considered a classic. He isa modern artist in Nepali short story writing. In “A Blaze in the Straw,” Mainali focuses on a way of living of husband and wife in Nepali context and proves that the quarrel between husband and wife is not more than a blaze in the straw as shown in the life of Chame and Gaunthali. He, very skillfully, expresses the experience of the characters as it is, which is the greatness of the artist suggested in the art. Based on this fact, this article discusses Guru Prasad Mainali as a modern artist and his “A Blaze in the Straw” as Nepali proverb implied in the title.

Janheinz Jahn's Bibliography is the most useful reference work that bibliographers of African literature have yet produced. One may wish to quarrel with Jahn about his definition of “neo-African literature” or about some of the material he has chosen to include (e.g., unpublished manuscripts, sermons, travel books, political works, monographs) as well as some he has chosen to exclude (e.g., literary works by white African writers, collections of folklore), but one must applaud his thorough documentation and multilingual approach. No other bibliography of African literature has been so comprehensive and so accurate. However, Jahn himself is aware that “there is no bibliography without gaps,” and he has invited others to help him “fill in these gaps and correct errors” (Jann, p. ix). It is hoped that the following list of additions and corrections will prove useful not only to Jahn but also to librarians, literary scholars, and other bibliographers. It is not to be taken as a complete list, for I have had neither the time nor the resources to check all of Jahn's entries or to search in more than a few libraries for missing titles. Of necessity my emphasis has been placed on materials written in European languages. I would encourage those who are aware of further errors and omissions to publish similar lists so that a more definitive bibliography of African literature can be prepared.

The article is devoted to the attribution of the original graphics of the 20th century from private collections in the collection of the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V.P. Sukachev. The stages of studying a particular work of art are described in detail. Attention is paid to the research of recent years, which allows us to talk about the ongoing work with objects from museum collections. As a result of the study, based on the source studies and comparative stylistic methods, it was possible to clarify the attribution of a number of illustrations to literary works, small-format watercolors and some drawings. Such works include, for example, the works of N.V. Kuzmin, T.A. Mavrina; K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, described in the article.
