Abstract Background Specific metabolic changes during physiological pregnancy are characterized by hyperlipidemia and increased oxidative stress. However, these specific changes raise the question of their pro-atherogenic potential during pregnancy and their influence on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women later in life, as well as complications during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in lipid indexes and parameters of lipid peroxidation in non-complicated pregnancy in order to estimate their course of change and potential relationship during non-complicated pregnancy. Methods The study included 43 healthy pregnant women and 38 non-pregnant healthy women, in appropriate ages, as the control group. Lipid parameters and oxidative stress parameters were monitored in a longitudinal study in the first, second and third trimesters, and before delivery during non-complicated pregnancy. Results Results have shown that lipid indexes rise during pregnancy. The values were significantly increased when compared to the first trimester in all lipid indices and in comparison with the control group. Thyobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) were not changed significantly during physiological pregnancy, but LOOH showed a significantly higher value in the first trimester compared with the control group. Prooxidative-antioxidative balance (PAB) significantly increases as pregnancy progresses. Conclusions We observed the changes in lipids, lipid indexes and parameters that indicate oxidative modification of lipids in physiological pregnancy that may lead to an atherogenic, prooxidant state.

Menopause is a matter of concern for women’s health due to a deficiency of female hormones; additionally, reactive oxygen species and aging can cause osteoporosis. Food becomes increasingly interesting as a menopausal woman’s alternative to hormone therapy. The effects of ethanol extracts from dark purple Superjami rice bran on bone metabolism and antioxidant defense systems in menopause-induced animal models were evaluated. Female rats underwent sham surgery or were ovariectomized to induce a menopause-like state. Rats were divided into a sham control group (SHAM), an ovariectomized control group (OVX), and an ovariectomized grou supplemented with Superjami rice bran extract group (OVX-S) and fed for 8 weeks. The OVX groups exhibited significantly more weight gain, amounts of bone turnover biochemical markers (alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, and C-terminal telopeptide), bone loss, lipid-peroxidation and oxidative stress than the SHAM group. However, Superjami bran extract added to the diet resulted in a significant reduction in body weight and lipid peroxidation, as well as enhanced bone metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activities, in ovariectomized rats. These results propound that extracts from Superjami rice bran have therapeutic potentiality against bone loss and oxidative stress in menopause-induced states and will be useful in preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis and oxidative damage.

Inflammation and oxidative stress are intrinsically linked to early poor placentation, typical of pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia associated with intrauterine growth restriction (PE-IUGR). Low mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) in peripheral blood constitutes a good peripheral surrogate marker of inflammation and oxidative stress. On these basis, we explored a possible correlation between mtDNAcn in peripheral blood in the first trimester of pregnancy and the PE-IUGR onset. To shed light on this issue, we setup a nested case–control study from a prospective cohort of pregnant women undergoing first-trimester aneuploidies screening. Two groups of patients affected by PE classified according to the clinical phenotype were identified: (1) patients who developed PE-IUGR and (2) patients who developed PE associated with appropriate for gestational age intrauterine fetal growth (PE-AGAf). Controls were women with a physiologic pregnancy matched to cases on the basis of age (±6 months, ratio 2:1). Mitochondrial DNA copy number was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction and normalized to nuclear DNA. The median (interquartile range) mtDNAcn in peripheral blood in patients with PE-IUGR (n = 12) and in patients with PE-AGAf (n = 16) was 70 (44-97) and 108 (95-145), respectively ( P = .004). Both these values were significantly lower than that detected in the control group (161[133-183], P < .001). The area under the receiver–operator curve for PE-IUGR and PE-AGAf were 0.94 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.88-1.00, P < .001) and 0.81 (95%CI: 0.70-0.91, P < .001), respectively. In conclusion, MtDNAcn in peripheral blood resulted significantly lower both in patients affected by PE-IUGR and in those affected by PE-AGAf when compared to controls. The accuracy of this biomarker resulted particularly good in predicting PE-IUGR.

<p><strong>BACKGROUND</strong><strong>: </strong>Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic and inflammation mucosal disease. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and oxidative stress damage might be the cause. Malondialdehyd (MDA), one parameter of lipid peroxidation is appropriate for DNA damage in OLP disease.</p><p><strong>OBJECTIVE</strong><strong>: </strong>To evaluate antioxidants and oxidative stress parameters in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) diseases and healthy control group with compare on serum and salivary samples.</p><p><strong>MATERIAL </strong><strong>&amp;</strong><strong> METHODS: </strong>The research population included 22 patients with OLP which recently diagnosed and 22 healthy controls matched for periodontal status. Total antioxidant activity (TAA), Malondialdehyde (MDA) or lipid peroxidation product and uric acid (UA) were evaluated in both serum and saliva. The t-tests were used for differences between the two groups in normal distributed variables and also Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient for assessing association between serum and salivary fluids.</p><p><strong>RESULTS</strong><strong>: </strong>TAA levels in OLP patients showed significant result and lower than healthy control group (p=0.39). Also, results in the saliva MDA concentration, was significantly higher in OLP patients than controls. In correlation test, inverse and significant correlation was observed between the MDA and UA values(r=0. 682, P=0.0001) and a significant correlation was found between serum TAA and UA values.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong><strong>: </strong>This study showed that OLP groups have higher cellular lipid peroxidation in compare to healthy controls and low level of TAA than controls. Patients with OLP are believed to be more at risk of antioxidant-oxidative stress imbalance.</p>

The purpose of the present study was to determine concentrations of some biochemical parameters and oxidative stress levels in cattle with brucellosis. For this purpose, a study group included with 20 cattle with brucellosis and a control group with 10 clinically healthy cattle were used. Blood samples were collected into the tubes (with and without anticoagulant agent) from the Jugular vein of animals in each group. The reduced glutathione (GSH) in whole blood and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) were determined spectrophotometrically. Additionally, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), urea, creatinine and iron (Fe) levels in serum samples were colorimetrically determined. Compared with the animals in the control group, it was determined that cattle with brucellosis had significantly (P<0.01) higher levels of AST, ALT, creatinine and NO and lower level of Fe. The increases of MDA and GSH levels were moderate and significantly important (P<0.05) while serum urea manner was not significantly altered. It was determined that significant alterations occurred in various biochemical parameters and antioxidant activity decreased in cattle with brucellosis.

Among the numerous coadjuvant therapies that could influence the incidence and progression of diabetic complications, antioxidants and flavonoids are currently being tested in clinical trials. We investigated the effect of quercetin on biochemical parameters in streptozotocin-induced (60 mg/kg body mass, by intraperitoneal injection) diabetic rats. A total of 32 female Wistar rats were distributed among 4 groups as follows: control (G1); control treated with quercetin (G2); diabetic (G3); and diabetic treated with quercetin (G4). Quercetin administered to pregnant diabetic rats controlled dyslipidemia and improved lipid profiles in diabetes mellitus, regulated oxidative stress by reducing the generation of lipid hydroperoxides, and increased the activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase.

We investigated whether resistance training (RT) vs. aerobic training (AT) differentially impacts on arterial pressure and related mechanisms in ovariectomized spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Female SHRs were ovariectomized and assigned to one of the following groups: sedentary, AT, or RT; sham sedentary SHR were used as control group. AT was performed on a treadmill, whereas RT was performed on a vertical ladder. Both exercise protocols were performed for 8 wk, 5 days/wk. Arterial pressure, baroreflex sensitivity, autonomic modulation, and cardiac oxidative stress parameters (lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, redox balance, NADPH oxidase, and antioxidant enzymes activities) were analyzed. Ovariectomy increased mean arterial pressure (∼9 mmHg), sympathetic modulation (∼40%), and oxidative stress in sedentary rats. Both RT and AT reduced mean arterial pressure (∼20 and ∼8 mmHg, respectively) and improved baroreflex sensitivity compared with sedentary ovariectomized rats. However, RT-induced arterial pressure decrease was significantly less pronounced than AT. Lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation were decreased while antioxidant enzymes were increased in both trained groups vs. sedentaries. The reduced gluthatione was higher after AT vs. other groups, whereas oxidized gluthatione was lower after RT vs. AT. Moreover, sympathetic and parasympathetic modulations were highly correlated with cardiac oxidative stress parameters. In conclusion, both RT and AT can decrease arterial pressure in a model of hypertension and menopause; although, at different magnitudes this decrease was related to attenuated autonomic dysfunction in association with cardiac oxidative stress improvement in both exercise protocols.

The state of lipid peroxidation and the oxidative modification of proteins in the blood of 29 women with chronic endometritis aged 27 to 40 years were studied. The control group consisted of 19 healthy women aged 27 to 44 years. The intensity of lipid peroxidation was estimated by the level of diene conjugates and malondialdehyde, the oxidative modification of proteins - by the level of carbonyl derivatives. It was shown that in the blood of women with chronic endometritis, the concentration of aliphatic aldehyde groups and 1,9 times the carbonyl groups in protein molecules increases by 3,3 times compared with the control group. A significant increase in diene conjugates by 34% and malondialdehyde in blood plasma and red blood cells by 47 and 43%, respectively, was established. The increase in lipid peroxidation products and oxidative protein modification in the blood indicates the development of oxidative stress in women suffering from chronic endometritis. Compared with healthy patients with chronic endometritis, a convincing tendency toward an increase in prolactin and anti- Muller hormone against a decrease in progesterone was revealed in the group compared to healthy ones. To predict possible complications in patients with chronic endometritis, it is advisable to study the indicators of protein and lipid peroxidation as markers of oxidative stress and the severity of the inflammatory process. In addition, such patients should be advised to take antioxidant drugs in combination with the basic therapy.

<p><span>The article presents the results of investigation of the impact of stress on oxidative intensity of lipid per oxidation. It was proved that intramuscular injection of 50% solution of tetrachloromethane at a dose of 0.25 mL per 100 g of rat body causes the activation of free radical lipid oxidation with excessive accumulation of intermediate and final products of lipid peroxidation. Our results indicate that the development of oxidative stress leads to the significant acceleration of the formation and accumulation of lipid hydroperoxides and malondialdehyde (MDA) in plasma of rats. We registered the highest level of lipid hydroperoxides in rat blood plasma under oxidative stress on the second day of the experiment; it was 0.843 un/mL, whereas this index was 0.245 un/mL in the control group. We also revealed that the content of malondialdehyde was the highest in the experimental group on the fifth day of the experiment; it was almost 2 times higher than in control group.</span></p><p><span>We could recommend to apply the liposomal drug "Butaselmevit" which contains butafosfan, selenium, methionine, milk thistle, and vitamins for the inhibition of lipid peroxidation under the development of oxidative stress. It was proved that the parenteral injection of liposomal drug "Butaselmevit" to the rats for the development of oxidative stress leads to a reduction of peroxidation products level in their plasma. We revealed that the level of intermediate and final products of lipid peroxidation in the blood of rats that were used liposomal drug reached normal physiological values on the 14<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>day of the experiment. Our results suggested that the new liposomal drug "Butaselmevit" has definite antioxidant properties</span></p>

Introduction: Anesthesia induced during a surgical intervention, the duration of the surgical intervention, and the surgical intervention itself tend to affect immune functions, resulting in the formation of free radicals in the metabolism. Free radicals can cause postoperative disorders by targeting biomolecules in the cell, such as lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and DNA. In the present study, we used remifentanil or esmolol to induce a controlled hypotension in patients who were undergoing septorhinoplasty under general anesthesia, and we planned to compare the effect of these agents on hemodynamics and oxidative stress relative to the control group. Methodology: A total of 75 patients aged between 18 and 65 y, ASA I-II, planned to undergo elective septorhinoplasty, were included in this study. Patients were randomly divided into the following three groups: Group R (remifentanil group, n = 25); Group E (esmolol group, n = 25); and Group C (control, n = 25). Anesthesia was induced with 2 mg/kg propofol 2 mg/kg, fentanyl 1 µg/kg, and rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg. Immediately after induction, Group R was started loading dose of remifentanil 1 µg/kg/min, followed by infusion at 0.25–0.50 µg/kg/min. In Group E, a loading dose of esmolol 500 µg/kg was given for 1 min, then infusion was continued @ 150–300 µg/kg. A targeted mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 55–65 mmHg was aimed. In Group C, remifentanil was infused at 0.1–0.2 µg/kg/min until a MAP of 70–100 mmHg was reached. During operation; systolic (SAP), diastolic (DAP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), EtCO2 (end tidal CO2) were recorded before induction, after induction, after intubation, at 5-min intervals during the first 30 min, and then at 10-min intervals during the intervention. The amounts of remifentanil and esmolol consumed by the patients during the operation were calculated and recorded. Blood samples that were taken twice, preoperatively and postoperatively, for malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total oxidant level (TOL), total antioxidant level (TAL), and oxidative stress index (OSI). Results: MAP showed a greater decrease starting from the 25th min and 40th min after intubation in remifentanil group and esmolol group respectively, compared to the control group. In the remifentanil and control groups, there was a statistically significant decrease in the postoperative OSI levels compared to the preoperative levels. One the other hand, in the esmolol group, there was no statistically significant difference between the preoperative and postoperative median OSI levels. There was a significant increase in the postoperative TAL of the remifentanil group compared to the preoperative level. Introduction. Currently, the search for markers of the health status of workers in agro-industrial complexes in contact with pesticides continues. The aim of this study was the assessment of the effect of glyphosate isopropylamine salt on the health of workers in agroindustrial complexes of the Ryazan region according to the severity of endogenous intoxication and oxidative stress in the body. Materials and Methods. Plasma and erythrocytes of peripheral blood of workers were the clinical material for the study. Blood was taken in 87 workers contacted with glyphosate-containing pesticides. As a control group, 20 clinically healthy individuals of the same age category who did not have contact with the pesticides were selected to be studied. The severity of endogenous intoxication was determined by the level of substances of low and medium molecular weight in the plasma and red blood cells. The severity of oxidative stress was determined by the content of the products of oxidative modification of proteins by the method of R.L. Levine modified by E.E. Dubinina. Results. Statistically significant changes in the severity of endogenous intoxication in the blood plasma and erythrocytes of the study groups and the control group of individuals among machine operators and workers who come into contact with pesticides to a lesser extent were obtained. A statistically significant increase in the level of carbonyl derivatives compared with the control among machine operators who have greater contact with glyphosate-containing pesticides according to the time sheets has been revealed. The level of secondary carbonyl derivatives in machine operators was higher than that of warehouse workers and was statistically significant. Conclusion. A statistically significant increase in the level of secondary carbonyl derivatives among machine operators as compared with other workers is a late marker of oxidative stress, which indicates to a depletion of the reserve forces of the body. This may be due to longer contact with pesticides based on glyphosate machine operators as compared to other workers in the agro-industrial complexes.
