AbstractThis paper focuses on The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) and analyses the Spanish translation by Waldo Leirós (1997, 2017) through a specific selection of quotations and fragments. It follows the evolution of the narrative thematically through the different sections of the novel in order to present the reader with an overview of the novel’s plot. The poem presented in the nineteenth chapter, “Farewell to thee”, is then examined alongside the translation offered by Leirós; this is followed by a new, alternative version proposed by the author. By way of conclusion, the translator’s faithfulness and dedication to Anne Brontë’s original text is demonstrated, while certain inaccuracies, omissions and oversights are acknowledged and analysed from the perspective of literary translation studies.

Stylistic devices and tropes are the elements of style that give an extra, figurative meaning to a written or oral text. They include metaphors, simile, allegory, paradox, word game and so on. Each author uses them in different ways to make their works more expressive and emotionally dense. Sometimes stylistic devices and tropes can manifest themselves as the characteristics of an author’s individual style. Metaphoric language and bizarre manner of representation are particularly common for the authors of the postmodern era. When it comes to translation of these works from one language to another the process is fraught with pitfalls and challenges for the translator. In the translation studies it’s believed that literary translation requires not only precise rendition of the contents but also conveyance of the stylistic features of a work. This article is dedicated to the analysis of the stylistic devices and tropes used in the novel “Everything Is Illuminated” by Jonathan Safran Foer and their translation from English into Russian. The aim of this work is to identify what kind of translation techniques are used by the translator V. A. Arkanov to render the linguistic and stylistic properties of the original text.

The study analyzes lexemes and word combinations of colloquial style, slang and low colloquial language, performs their comparative analysis at word level, looks into the transformational patterns that the structures undergo during literary translation into English and Russian, and discusses the advantages and flaws of the applied translation strategies through suggesting adequate translation solutions. In the article, the argument is made that the translation strategies of substandard lexis reflect the interdisciplinary nature of expressive meaning and connotation which can be conveyed differently through various language levels during literary translation.

Abstract This article is a comparative study of four different translations into English of Federico García Lorca's play Bodas de sangre (1933) carried out in the United Kingdom and Ireland throughout the 1990s. Since the publication of Antoine Berman's seminal article on 'retranslation', this theoretical concept has provided a fecund framework for descriptive translation studies, illuminating the variety of solutions translators provide when confronted with the same original text. This article furthers that body of scholarship while simultaneously providing new angles on Lorca's dramatic work. The comparative approach to several English translations of this classic work concentrates on two key scenes of the play and discusses the linguistic, pragmatic and theatrical adequacy of each translation.

Translating metaphor and metaphoric expressions is one of the disputable problems in translation studies due to the conceptual discrepancies which exist between the source culture and the target readership, moreover, if the metaphor plays a crucial role in creating an appeal to the reader as in the political text. In this respect, it is under the discussion of how to deal with a metaphor when translating political discourse, and what are the dominating strategies and traditions of translating metaphoric units in Turkish translations. Caused by the theoretical and practical urgency of the problem, this paper is aimed to analyze strategies of conveying metaphors from English to Turkish based on the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell and its Turkish translations by Sedat Demir and Celal Üster. To achieve the aims of the research the efforts were undertaken to compare the original text with its two different translations. For the precise analysis, Old Major’s speech was thoroughly scrutinized on the point of the metaphoric expressions in the text and their correspondences in the Turkish translations.

This paper analyses some aspects (use of footnotes, intertextuality, punctuation and maintenance of cultural elements) of Las esferas del mandala, the first Spanish translation (by Silvia Pupato and Román García-Azcárate and published in Barcelona in 1973) of The Solid Mandala, written by the Australian Nobel Prize winner Patrick White in 1966. Through the selection of excerpts from the original considered problematic to be rendered in translation, we observe the solutions found, as well as some strategies adopted by the Spanish translators to compose the final product presented to the readers. This contrastive reading hopes to engender interesting ideas to help future translators of the novel, while valuing the translation act.

Inter-literary contacts play a productive role in the global cultural space. The most important means of the internationalization of literature is literary translation. Translation promotes not only acquaintance with the literature of other nations, but also integration and mutual enrichment of spiritual culture. The present research is devoted to the problem of inter-literary synthesis realized through literary translation. The article raises questions of Russian-Persian literary connections, traces the history of translations of M. Lermontovs poetry and prose into Farsi. The study establishes the influence of the works of Russian writers, namely M. Lermontov, on the creativity and worldview of Iranian authors. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the oriental poetry of M. Lermontov. The authors of the present article are interested in the tradition of translations of poetic, prosaic, dramatic works of the Russian writer into the Ossetian language. In the works of Lermontov, Ossetian translators were particularly attracted by the Caucasian motifs. This attraction was manifested in the translators interest in the works of Lermontov with exotic, oriental flavor. Thus, the poems The Fugitive , Mtsyri , Calla , Haji Abrek , the tale Ashik-Kerib , the novel The Hero of Our Time and many others were translated, etc. Different translators have resorted to translate some works of the Russian poet into the Ossetian language more than once. The study analyzes the versions of the Lermontovs fairy tale Ashik-Kerib in the Ossetian language. In the translations by Ts. Ambalov, A. Makkaev, M. Dzasokhov the transmission of national-cultural elements was traced, the basic translational transformations used in reproducing the oriental flavor of the original text are discussed.

Frances Burney (1752-1840) was one of the most influential eighteenth-century British novelists. Apart from the novel, Burney also cultivated the theatre and she wrote texts of a marked political nature on the French Revolution, a fact that is not so well– known by the general public. This article is inscribed within the framework of gender studies and the so-called Burney Studies and aims to analyze Letter from Frances Burney to Her Sister Esther About her Mastectomy Without Anaesthetic, 1812. By its subject, the document is an account of current interest for both medicine and feminism. Here Letter Here Letter is studied from the perspective of translation studies, specifically taking Itamar Even-Zohar’s theory of literary polisystems and various translation strategies as a methodological reference. We will examine the configuration of the key elements of Even-Zohar’s approach and various translation strategies as a methodological reference in this text which we will approach translation studies as a pathography, insisting on the identification between female subject and writing, Burney’s courage in confronting the disease and the particular relationship she establishes with the participants in the story and the impact that disease has on those around and helping her. Finally, the Spanish translation of Letter is offered, so Spanish-speaking readers have access to this document recently digitized by The British Library. Letter is a chronicle of pain, but also of courage and a real lesson in the intimate relationship between women and writing that was always so important to Burney. This study also means a re-vision of the writer that is far from what we could have until now.

Abstract Jean-Claude Izzo, an author committed to reality, recreates in his work Le Soleil des mourants the life of an indigent condemned to exclusion and loneliness. His critique also extends to contemporary society, both urban and dehumanized, and to the institutions and organisms that govern it, incapable of coping with social stigmas. This paper aims to disentangle, through a semantic-stylistic analysis, the homeless figure who stands as the cornerstone around which the story revolves. This paper also tries to identify the textual, linguistic, and cultural singularities that, from a translation studies approach, are regarded as specific translation challenges in this novel. This study puts forth a proposal for the Spanish translation of a selection of passages that support our arguments. The translation decisions are made according to the concept of communicative equivalence (Wotjak 2015) and to the taxonomy of techniques compiled by Hurtado Albir (2008, 269–271). The paper concludes that the concept of communicative equivalence has become a relevant methodology for the translation of Le Soleil des mourants, as it enables the translator to render the denotative elements of the message, the connotative and expressive use of the language, and the author’s communicative intention.

This paper discusses how the nature of literary translation differs from other forms of translation by looking at practical difficulties and challenges notable in the Arabic translation of Lahiri's novel The Namesake (2003). The difficulties discussed are cultural differences which have created “untranslatable” cultural-bound words and phrases, as well as specialized vocabulary. The paper explores the conflict between the translator's duty to accuracy and his/her duty to literary translation as an art form. One problem faced by the prose-translator is finding terms in his or her own language that are faithful as much as possible to the meaning of certain words in S.L. For example, there are words which describe specific rituals or those related to typical architecture, fabrics, and cookery; these and many others represent the specific culture of the original text and the translator needs to be careful when translating them. The researcher finally suggests that there is a need to expand the perimeters of  translation studies specially those dealing with literary prose because the translators and researchers lay more emphasis on the translation of poetry.
