Abstract In this investigation, softwood pulp and bleached wheat straw pulp were used as raw materials, and Calcium Sulfate Whiskers (CSW) were used as fillers. Based on the structural properties and characteristics of CSW, the printing properties of the paper with CSW, such as whiteness, opacity, pH value, uniformity, Z-direction tensile strength and surface strength, were analyzed. The results showed that CSW has low solubility, high retention and fiber-like appearance. The whiteness of the paper is the best when the filling amount of CSW is 20 %. The paper opacity of softwood pulp increases significantly, and the opacity of bleached wheat straw pulp decreases significantly when CSW is more than 30 %. The addition reduces pH and surface strength of the paper. The evenness of the paper does not change obviously. The Z-direction tensile strength of the paper decreases in the softwood paper, but increases obviously in the bleached wheat straw paper.

In order to study the preparation and property of the multi layer composite paperboard, bleached wheat straw pulp, bleached chemical thermal mechanical pulp and waste newsprint pulp are used as raw materials to making paperboard. The results show that the bonding force between fibers of grasses chemical pulp is strong which can improve the bonding strength between the layers. Bleached wheat straw pulp is used as outer layer and waste news paper pulp is used as inner layer to make composite paperboard has high physical properties. Bleached chemical thermal mechanical pulp fiber is shorter, so paperboard tightness and physical strength reduce, which can be used as the lining of the multi layer composite paperboard to improve the stiffness of the paperboard and reduce the cost.

The application of hydrated calcium silicate as filler in paper from wheat straw pulp is studied in this paper. It shows that that with the increase of dosage of hydrated calcium silicate, the stiffness of paper improves, and the whiteness and the printing color density of paper improve, but the tightness and tensile strength of paper decrease. When the dosage of CPAM is 0.45 g/kg, the tightness, tensile strength, tearing index, whiteness and printing color density reach the large value. Paper ash content increased with the increase of amount of hydrated calcium silicate, but paper ash gains is not big after the dosage of hydrated calcium silicate reaches 20%.

Cationic polymethyl acrylate emulsion which was prepared with no soap emulsion polymerization was used in bleached wheat straw pulp as papermaking retention agent. The main influence factors on retention effect, such as dosage of polymethyl acrylate emulsion, pH value of the bleached wheat straw pulp, reaction time after adding the polymethyl acrylate emulsion and stir velocity were discussed in detail. Experimental results showed that optimal application conditions were that first step was adding cationic emulsion which dosage was 0.64% relative to dry fiber, stir velocity was 1400r/min, 90s for reaction, second step was adding anion components which dosage was 0.16% relative to dry fiber, stir velocity was 750r/min, 60s for reaction, pH value was 4.5~5.0. The cationic organic particles system has good retention aid effect which one pass retention was 96.4%.

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) substituted by magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) as control agent and alkali source were investigated in chlorine dioxide bleaching and hydrogen peroxide bleaching of NaOH-AQ wheat straw pulp. The effects of alkali sources on pulp properties, including brightness and tensile strength, were investigated. The four experimental groups, including DNaOHPNaOH, DNaOHPMg(OH)2, D Mg(OH)2PNaOH and DMg(OH)2PMg(OH)2, were studied in this paper. The results showed that the brightness and tensile strength of DMg(OH)2PMg(OH)2 pulp was slightly lower than that of DNaOHPNaOH pulp. But there were more residual ClO2 and residual H2O2 in the effluents of DMg(OH)2PMg(OH)2 bleaching process than that in the effluents of DNaOHPNaOH bleaching process, which illustrated that DMg(OH)2PMg(OH)2 bleaching process had higher bleaching efficiency than DNaOHPNaOH bleaching process. The influence of Mg(OH)2 replacing NaOH was more obvious when it was used in the bleaching process of P stage than that in the D stage. The replacement of NaOH with Mg(OH)2 in D Stage can lower the dosage of alkali used in the following P stage.

Durian (Durio zibethinus) and cempedak (Artocarpus integer) peels waste are not used by the society. The research aim is to extract pectin from durian and cempedak peels and to formulate the pectin into edible films for food packaging. The research stages were first pre-treatment of durian and cempedak peels, pectin extraction, pectin drying, and  pectin application as edible films with concentration of 0%, 5%, and 15%. Based on this research it was concluded that pectin can be extracted from durian and cempedak peels with yield result of 27.97 % and 55.58 %, respectively. Edible film obtained has  similar characteristics between raw materials cempedak and durian peels. The higher concentration of cempedak peel  pectin increased the thickness, but decreased the tensile strength and elongation at a concentration of 15%. While in edible films from durian peel pectin, the higher concentration of pectin decreased the thickness of edible film on pectin concentration of 15%, lowered tensile strength and raised the edible film elongation. Keywords: waste, durian, cempedak, pectin extraction, edible film

Abstract Cellulose nanopapers provide diverse, strong and lightweight templates prepared entirely from sustainable raw materials, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). Yet the strength of CNFs has not been fully capitalized in the resulting nanopapers and the relative influence of CNF strength, their bonding, and biological origin to nanopaper strength are unknown. Here, we show that basic principles from paper physics can be applied to CNF nanopapers to illuminate those relationships. Importantly, it appeared that ~ 200 MPa was the theoretical maximum for nanopapers with random fibril orientation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the contrast in tensile strength for nanopapers prepared from bacterial cellulose (BC) and wood-based nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC). Endemic amorphous polysaccharides (hemicelluloses) in NFC act as matrix in NFC nanopapers, strengthening the bonding between CNFs just like it improves the bonding between CNFs in the primary cell wall of plants. The conclusions apply to all composites containing non-woven fiber mats as reinforcement. Graphic abstract
