Abstract This article reviews the major research and development on spouted beds (SBs). Due to its unique structural and flow characteristics, the SB is a very successful system in most applications. Two-phase and sometimes three-phase interactions generate a large number of variables to be noted in each process. Up-to-date information on the fundamentals and applications of SBs has been briefly presented, based on the published works. Thousands of interesting studies on hydrodynamic characteristics, numerical simulations, and new applications of SBs are reported. In the first step, the present work presents a review of hydrodynamic characteristics (circulation of solids in SB, measurement techniques for particle tracking and empirical hydrodynamics, pressure drop, maximum spoutable height, minimum spouting velocity, and diameter of the spout). In the second step, main mathematical models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the SB to predict and analyze different processes are described. Some main mathematical modeling and the recent advances of two fluid methods and discrete element method approaches in CFD simulation of SBs are summarized. In the last step, some new applications of the SB are presented. As the result of this review, we can observe the importance of further development of hydrodynamics structure, working on modeling and related correlations and improve the applications of SBs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the load characteristics of steel and concrete tubular members under jet fire, with the motivation to investigate the jet fire load characteristics in FPSO topsides. This paper is part of Phase II of the joint industry project on explosion and fire engineering of FPSOs (EFEF JIP) [1]. To obtain reliable load values, jet fire tests were carried out in parallel with a numerical study. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was used to set up an adiabatic wall boundary condition for the jet fire to model the heat transfer mechanism. A concrete tubular member was tested under the assumption that there is no conduction effect from jet fire. A steel tubular member was tested and considered to transfer heat through conduction, convection, and radiation. The temperature distribution, or heat load, was analyzed at specific locations on each type of member. ANSYS CFX [2] and Kameleon FireEx [3] codes were used to obtain similar fire action in the numerical and experimental methods. The results of this study will provide a useful database to determine design values related to jet fire.

Cuttings transport of drilling and washing process in horizontal well is a typical two-phase (liquid-solid) or three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) flow phenomena. In this paper, it analyzes the flow characteristics of Huan 127-Lian H2 horizontal wellbore , then uses experimental method to study the behavior of the particle size distribution and the mechanics. This study provides an important way to master cuttings settling in fluid medium, it can explain how the cuttings bed is generated and cleared, and why the procession of cuttings of migration is stopped. In addition, measurement and analysis of drill cuttings is the basis erosion and abrasion analysis of BHA.

Abstract The application of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to simulate the response of a semi-submersible floating wind turbine under pitch decay motion was investigated in this study. Estimation of the natural period, the hydrodynamic damping and the flow characteristics were the main focus of this study. An extensive verification study of the simulation results was conducted to improve the confidence and reliability of the numerical simulation by the estimation of the numerical errors and uncertainties. The time series of pitch motion was plotted against model test data. In addition, the pitch period and hydrodynamic damping were calculated and compared to experimental data. Detailed flow characteristics as vorticity field and hydrodynamic pressure field on the floater surface were illustrated after post processing of the computational data. The results of the flow characteristics suggest that the heave damping plates were a major contributor to the hydrodynamic damping of this floater in pitch decay.

Winglet is a tool used to improve the efficiency of aircraft and UAV performance by preventing fluid flow jump from lower surface to upper surface at wingtip. The addition of this winglet resulted in improved lift and reduction of drag force from the aircraft wing or UAV. From Whitcomb's research, it was found that the use of winglet on a full size airplane can increase fuel efficiency by 7%. The research led to the idea of conducting research on fluid flow characteristics on the UAV wing with the Eppler 562 airfoil combined with the whitcomb winglet. This numerical study was conducted using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method based on the advantages of using this simulation that can review the fluid flow in macroscopic way. This study is provide accurate fluid flow visualization results and can improve the performance of the wings when compared with wings without winglet (plain wing). Wing with the Eppler 562 airfoil combined with the whitcomb winglet results reduction in rotating motion that makes velocity components as opposed to lift.

The numerical study of the flow over a two-dimensional cylinder which is symmetrically confined in a plane channel is presented to study the characteristics of vortex shedding. The numerical model has been established using direct numerical simulation (DNS) based on the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code named OpenFOAM. In the present study, the flow fields have been computed at blockage ratio, β of 0.5 and at Reynolds number, Re of 200 and 300. Two-dimensional simulations investigated on the effects of Reynolds number based on the vortex formation and shedding frequency. It was observed that the presence of two distinct shedding frequencies appear at higher Reynolds number due to the confinement effects where there is strong interactions between boundary layer, shear layer and the wake of the cylinder. The range of simulations conducted here has shown to produce results consistent with that available in the open literature. Therefore, OpenFOAM is found to be able to accurately capture the complex physics of the flow.

Turbulent forced convection ofγ-Al2O3/water nanofluid in a concentric double tube heat exchanger has been investigated numerically using mixture two-phase model. Nanofluids are used as coolants flowing in the inner tube while hot pure water flows in outer tube. The studies are conducted for Reynolds numbers ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 and nanoparticle volume fractions of 2, 3, 4, and 6 percent. Results showed that nanofluid has no effects on fully developed length and average heat transfer coefficient enhances with lower slope than wall shear stress. Comparisons with experimental correlation in literature are conducted and good agreement with present numerical study is achieved.

Abstract The spout-fluid bed (SFB) is a very successful synthesis of the spouting and fluidization. The hydrodynamics of SFB are more complex than both fluidized beds and spouted beds. Up-to-date information on the fundamentals and applications of SFBs has been briefly presented, based on the limited work reported, in the new spouted bed book edited by Norman Epstein and John R. Grace (Spouted and spout-fluid beds: fundamentals and applications, 2011). In the past three years, nearly 30 papers have been published in international journals. They reported interesting studies on hydrodynamic characteristics, numerical simulations and new applications of SFBs. This article reviews the major research and development on SFB from the year 2010 and recommends further research topics. This review is intended not only as an important supplement to the SFB chapter of the spouted bed book but also helpful guidance for future research.

Abstract Solid suspension characteristics were predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in a stirred tank driven by a dual rigid-flexible impeller and a dual punched rigid-flexible impeller. An Eulerian-Eulerian approach, standard k-ε turbulence model, and multiple reference frames (MRF) technique were employed to simulate the solid-liquid two-phase flow, turbulent flow, and impeller rotation in the stirred tank, respectively. The CFD results showed that dual punched rigid-flexible impeller could increase the axial velocity and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, and decrease the quantity of sediment solid particles compared with dual rigid-flexible impeller. Less impeller power was consumed by dual punched rigid-flexible impeller compared with dual rigid-flexible impeller at the same impeller speed. It was found that punched rigid-flexible impeller was more efficient in terms of solid suspension quality than dual rigid-flexible impeller at the same Pw. The simulated results for the axial solid concentration were in good agreement with the experimental data.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) has initiated a program to develop Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) capability for simulating single- and two-phase flows in rod-bundles. In the current work, a 5×5 rod assembly with a split-type spacer grid is simulated with ANSYS Fluent 14 using unsteady simulations with a fully conformal hybrid mesh (wall y+∼30). This work represents results of AECL’s recent participation in the OECD/NEA organized CFD benchmarking exercise on the MATiS-H experiment performed at the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The sensitivity to turbulence models is tested using the standard k-ε and the Reynolds stress model (RSM). Reasonable agreement is achieved between the calculated and experimental velocity values in the region close to the spacer grid, whereas turbulence intensity values are underpredicted compared to the experiments.
