Since the introduction of commercial Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microscopic systems in 1983, IR microscopy has developed as an important analytical tool in research, industry and forensic analysis. Because of the frequent encounter of small quantities of physical evidence found at crime scenes, spectroscopic IR microscopes have proven particularly valuable for forensic applications. Transmittance and reflectance measurements have proven very useful. Reflection-absorption, specular reflection, and diffuse reflection have all been applied. However, it has been only very recently that an internal reflection (IRS) objective has been commercially introduced.The IRS method, also known as attenuated total reflection (ATR), has proven very useful for IR analysis of standard size samples. The method has been applied to adhesive tapes, plastic explosives, and general applications in the analysis of opaque materials found as evidence. The small quantities or uncontaminated areas of specimens frequently found requiring forensic analysis will often be directly applicable to microscopic IRS analysis.

The effect of miniaturization of the separation channel on the performance of thermal field-flow fractionation (TFFF) is substantiated theoretically. The experiments carried out under carefully chosen experimental conditions proved the high performance of the separation of polymers within an extended range of molar masses from relatively low up to ultrahigh-molar-mass (UHMM) samples. The new micro-TFFF allows to achieve high resolution when applying constant field force operation, it makes easy the programming of the temperature drop which is an advantageous operational mode from the point of view of the time of analysis, and it extends considerably the range of perfectly controlled temperature of the cold wall due to a substantial decrease in the heat energy flux compared with standard size channels.

Abstract In a series of cross-breaking tests carried out on hard rubber during hot weather, the values of the breaking elongation were higher than was expected, although the cross-breaking strength was of the usual order. It was thought that the high temperature might account for these results by making the hard rubber more plastic. The following experiments were, therefore, performed to investigate the effect of small changes of temperature, such as are encountered at different times of the year, on the cross-breaking strength and elongation. Test-pieces of standard size (75 × 25 × 5 mm.) were cut from a sheet of hard rubber of the composition: 68 per cent rubber, 32 per cent sulfur, which had been vulcanized for 5 hours at 155° C. They were immersed in a beaker of water and kept at the required temperature for about 15 minutes, when they were judged to have attained a steady temperature. The tests were carried out on an Avery fabric-testing machine fitted with special clamps to give a three-point loading test, the distance between the supporting knife-edges being 50.4 mm. (2 in.). These clamps were heated to the temperature of the specimens by means of an electric radiator. The specimens were tested as soon as possible after they had been removed from the water, so that the change of temperature during the test was reduced as far as possible. The standard conditions already laid down, were observed.

Despite the 2020 reform of Germany’s national parliament voting law, the debate about a robust voting system has not ended . Träger and Jacobs have convincingly shown that Naun­dorf’s suggestion to introduce a parallel voting system creates more problems than it solves, and thus more far-reaching approaches have to be considered . One way to stop the Bunde­stag from growing is to reject the two vote-system . Comparable to the system of Thuringia’s local elections, with open lists and three votes per voter, both the standard size of the Bun­destag can be safely adhered to and at the same time a personalized proportional represen­tation can be maintained . Among other advantages, the voters would have greater influence on the personalized composition of the Bundestag . In particular, reservations on the part of the political parties could stand in the way of such a sustainable solution to the ongoing problems with the German electoral system .

SummaryObjectives: To develop a platform that used standard size force plates for large breed dogs to capture ground reaction force data from any size dog.Methods: A walkway platform was constructed to accommodate two force plates (60 cm x 40 cm) positioned in series to a variety of smaller sizes. It was constructed from a custom wood frame with thick aluminium sheet force plate covers that prevented transfer of load to the force plate, except for rectangular windows of three different dimensions. A friction study was performed to ensure plates did not translate relative to one another during gait trials. A prospective, observational, single crossover study design was used to compare the effect of force platform configuration (full plate size [original plate], half plate size [modified plate]) on ground reaction forces using eight adult healthy Labrador Retriever dogs.Results: Slippage of the steel plate on the force plate did not occur. Peak propulsion force was the only kinetic variable statistically different between the full size and half sized platforms. There were no clinically significant differences between the full and half force platforms for the variables and dogs studied.Discussion and conclusion: The modified force platform allows the original 60 x 40 cm force plate to be adjusted effectively to a 30 x 40 cm, 20 x 40 cm and 15 x 40 cm sized plate with no clinically significant change in kinetic variables. This modification that worked for large breed dogs will potentially allow kinetic analysis of a large variety of dogs with different stride lengths.

In this paper, it is presented the experimental results of a campaign on diagonal compression tests, as of ASTM E519-02, to assess and compare the in-plane behavior of standard size of 1200 × 1200 × 250 mm, for three unreinforced and three reinforced wall panels by glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) embedded in an inorganic matrix.From the diagonal compression test results, were determined some of the main mechanical parameters such as: shear strength, modulus of rigidity and ductility, before and after application of the reinforcement.The experimental results showed that the GFRP reinforced panels exhibited a significant increase of 127% in shear resistance, 1100% in ductility and 650% in modulus of rigidity when compared to unreinforced panels.It was concluded that this technique provided satisfactory results and can be considered a suitable method for repair of masonry structures.

Sloshing, a violent behaviour of liquid contents in tanks submitted to the forced vessels’ motion on the sea represents one of the major considerations in LNG vessels design over several past decades. State of the art of sloshing analysis relies on small-scale sloshing model tests supported by extensive developments of CFD computation techniques, commonly studying one isolated tank submitted to the forced motion without their mutual interaction. In reality, wave-induced response of the vessel carrying liquid cargo is affected by internal liquid motion, and consequently, tank liquid flow is altered by the vessel motion in return. An efficient numerical model for dynamic coupling between motions exerted by tank liquid (sloshing) and rigid body motions of the vessel (seakeeping) was developed in Bureau Veritas, formulated under the assumptions of linear potential theory in frequency domain. As already experienced with anti-rolling tanks, strong coupling effect is perceived on the first order transverse motions. However, consequences of coupled motions on sloshing loads have not been explored yet. This paper presents comparative analysis of sloshing effects induced by coupled and non-coupled vessel motion, introduced as the excitation to 6 d.o.f. small-scale model test rig. Possible risk of coupled effects is demonstrated on the example of standard size of LNG carrier operating with partly filled cargo tanks.
