Politics is not only controlled by male but also female. Commissive speech acts often happen in presidential campaign speeches. This research aims to analyze the comparison of commissive speech acts in English speeches by Trump and Warren presidential candidate viewed from gender differences. Qualitative method is applied in this research. The data are analyzed by using commissive speech acts from Searle (2005), Cutting (2002) and talk theory from Tannen (1991). The findings show that Trump used seven types of commissive: promise, guarantee, pledge, contract, offering, threaten, and refusal. The functions are giving solution, convincing, insulting, threatening, showing care, and encouraging. Warren used three types of commissive: promise, guarantee, and threaten. The functions are giving solution, convincing, threatening, and showing care. There are three similarities of commissive between them: promise, guarantee, and threaten. Promise is the most frequent type used by them. Viewed from gender differences, female and male presidential candidates applied report and raport talks. They tended to use report talks. The differences are that Trump employed more types of commissive than Warren did. Trump used seven types while Warren used three. Viewed from gender differences, Trump’s report talk is more varied than Warren’s. Meanwhile, Warren’s rapport talk is more varied than Trump. This research gives the example to students of English language on how to convince hearers or audience by utilizing commissive speech acts.

What are the dynamics of partisan rhetoric in presidential campaigns? (How) has presidential candidate partisanship changed over time? Analyzing a comprehensive dataset of party-related statements in presidential campaign speeches over the 1952–2012 period, we show that Democratic and Republican candidates have taken distinctive approaches to partisanship. Overall, Democratic candidates have been partisans, while Republicans have largely refrained from partisan rhetoric on the campaign trail. However, this difference has narrowed substantially over time, due to a dramatic decline in the partisanship of Democratic presidential candidates. We argue that Democratic and Republican candidates have adopted different campaign strategies that reflect both enduring party differences and changing political contexts. Though naturally inclined to partisanship, Democratic candidates have adopted more conciliatory strategies primarily in response to growing public antipathy toward partisan rancor. In contrast, Republicans’ tendency toward more conciliatory rhetoric has been reinforced by political developments discouraging partisan campaigning.

This study of the transitivity system aims to identify and describe the type of transitivity, namely the process, participant, and circumstance which appeared in Jokowi and Prabowo campaign speech in 2019. The method used was qualitative method and researcher as key instrument in this study. The method used in collecting data was Metode Simak which proposed by Sudaryanto (2018). Data collected were analyzed by using the theory of Halliday (1985), namely Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) which focused on transitivity system. The results of the study based on data analysis show that there are 24 data or about 32% material process as dominant process that found in Jokowi campaign speech, the most dominant participant is actor that found about 15.1% or 23 data , and time as the most dominant of circumstance that found about 21.4% or 9 data. Whereas in Prabowo's campaign speech found that the most dominant process that used is material process about 37.5% or 30 data with the most dominant participant, namely actor and goal that have the same amount of data about 28 data or 18.2%, the circumstance type which is the most dominant used namely place about 11 data or 26.8%. The most dominant transitivity process used by the two presidential candidates shows that the two presidential candidates try to convey things related to the activities or actions that will be done by each presidential candidate if they are elected to become president of Indonesia in 2019-2024 period.

This paper analyzes how US presidential candidates should allocate resources across states to maximize the probability of winning the election, by developing and estimating a probabilistic-voting model of political competition under the Electoral College system. Actual campaigns act in close agreement with the model. There is a 0.9 correlation between equilibrium and actual presidential campaign visits across states, both in 2000 and 2004. The paper shows how presidential candidate attention is affected by the states' number of electoral votes, forecasted state-election outcomes, and forecast uncertainty. It also analyzes the effects of a direct national popular vote for president. (JEL D72)

This study aimed at describing and analyzing the types of speech act and the functions of speech act produced by 3-5 years old students at Jembatan Budaya School Badung. Here, Searle’s theory (1979) is used as the grand theory for analyzing the types of speech act and Leech’s theory (1991) is used for the function of speech act. The research was conducted at Jembatan Budaya School Badung. The subjects of the research were the pre-school students of 3-5 years old in communication. To obtain the intended data, three methods of data collection were used, namely; observation, recording, and note taking. There are three instruments used, namely; researcher, observation, and video recorder. The data obtained were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. This research discovered two findings as the aims of this research. First, the most frequent type of speech act used by the children of 3-5 years old student is directive, which is followed by commissive, representative, and expressive. Specifically, (1) the children used 6% utterances in representative category, (2) the children used 44% utterances in directive category, (3) the children used 24% utterances in expressive category, (4) the children used 26% utterances in commissive category. Second, the children of 3-5 years old students mostly created speech act for the competitive function, which is followed by convivial function, and conflictive function. Whereas collaborative function did not appear in those children’s communication. The implication of this study is to learn and master pragmatics, especially in the theory of speech acts to be able to understand the speaker’s intention so that the communication expressed is able to be fulfilled.

Abstract This article argues that the current explosion of right-wing national-populism is intricately connected to shifting perceptions of globalization in the world. I contend that a return to the once dominant but now frequently criticized ideational approach to the study of populism as ideology or discourse can provide insightful, if incomplete, explanations of the current populist moment. After a brief opening overview of some influential conceptual perspectives on populism, the article offers an appraisal of some major criticisms leveled against the ideological paradigm by advocates of competing approaches. I argue that the widespread portrayal of populism as a “thin-centered” ideology does not capture the ideational constellation of what I call antiglobalist populism. The currently dominant strain is reflected most prominently in “Trumpism” and similar European manifestations. To make my case, I apply the qualitative method of morphological discourse analysis (MDA) to key 2016 campaign speeches delivered by then presidential candidate Donald J. Trump and to related public remarks presented by British national-populist leader Nigel Farage on American soil. The research findings presented in this article suggest that globalization-related concepts have moved to the core and adjacent symbolic environment of antiglobalist populism. Thus, the general assumption of a “thin” conceptual core of national-populism no longer holds because its morphology has been significantly enriched. Bringing ideology back into populism studies serves the much-needed rehabilitation of a valuable perspective that has been written off too prematurely by many populism scholars.
