Problem-based learning and experiential learning are well-known learning approaches and often referred as powerful on facilitating learning practices, but which one is the most effective on facilitating civil servant training program? This article illustrates a one-shot case study in which focus on one civil servant training program only without comparing it to other programs. The training program was conducted by human resource development agency, Central Java Province, in March 2018. By employing quantitative research approach, this research found that the result of the training program indicated: there are no significant differences between problem-based learning and experiential learning approaches. In this case, the learning result from experiential learning approach is slightly above problem-based learning approach’s result.

In this paper, we describe a case study of an undergraduate course on research methodology, in which lecture was reduced to a minimum and replaced with experiential learning activities. The course design was project-based and spiraled through four phases: a mini-lecture on a given research method, an “early practice” activity, and “reflection on practice” tutor-guided small group collaborations which led to deeper understanding of the given research method. This particular course design constitutes a paradigm shift in comparison to the predominant in Greek higher education didactic pedagogical model. How this paradigm shift was received and experienced by the participating students? In order to get rich insights into the lived experiences of the participants (N=15), we adopted a blended qualitative research approach: thematic analysis combined with students’ critical reflections on their experience, aiming to produce a thick description of our intervention. The course design and implementation positioned students and their tutors as knowledgeable actors able to contribute research insights through their transactions.

Vaccination, which is often seen as a health policy intervention, has proven to be the most effective at reducing the spread of infectious diseases globally. However, the perception of anti-vaccines, misunderstanding of information related to vaccines, and even doubts about vaccines are still common in the community—no exception related to the COVID-19 global vaccination. Therefore, we need a study that can answer the determinant variable of the COVID-19 vaccination intention, especially in Indonesia. This study answers how personal attitude, subjective norm, and perceived feasibility with religious and media literacy moderation influence the public intention in using the COVID-19 vaccine in Indonesia. This research uses a quantitative research approach, with an explanative research type. We used Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), and Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour (DPTB) as a determinant model with a variable of religiosity and media literacy as a moderating variable for the intention of vaccination COVID-19 in Central Java. This research was conducted in Central Java Province as one of the provinces with the largest population and one of Indonesia's largest number of COVID-19 cases. Data collection was carried out online and offline with 100 respondents.

This article argues that bureaucracy plays politics in Indonesia, not only during the electoral periods, but also in public service. Using the case of environmental evaluation in local government, where natural resources comprise most of the local economy, this article discusses the politics of bureaucracy in undergoing daily governing processes. The environment and natural resource businesses are two opposing fields. Environmental evaluation becomes a contentious area and is usually highly political. This article identifies the bureaucracy’s politicisation in environmental evaluation as occuring in at least in two forms—in measurement and in project implementation. In terms of measurement, bureaucracy tends to use minimum standards, while in project implementation, there are some occasions where bureaucracy tends to sub-contract the work to the third party, usually NGOs, especially in relations to sensitive issues, so that it is politically safer for them, once the result is not as pleasing as expected. This article uses some cases in Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Java, and Bangka Belitung, and applied case study as research approach.

The present research is design to assess the “effects of malnutrition on the academic performance of grade 6-8 learners in rural areas of Tehsil Hafizabad”. Quantitative research approach was used to achieve the objectives of the study. Quantitative data was gathered by using Scheduled Interview from the sample of 150 learners of the three selected schools. Data was analyzed through statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The outcomes of the study revealed that the malnutrition, particularly the use of low quality foods significantly lowers the academic performance in terms of lowering the understanding level of the learners and attainments; it reduces the attendance rate ultimately. It was observed that the less participation in physical activities, low income of the household and crowded demographic conditions reduced the learning capacity of the students. Some useful suggestions were also made, strictly ban on low quality food, awareness programs should be launched for public, and more studies must be conducted to highlight and overcome the issue.

Improvement of Students’ Mathematical Communication Skills and Self-Efficacy through the Realistic Mathematics Learning ApproachAbstractThis study aims to determine the improvement of students' mathematical communication skills and self-efficacy through a realistic mathematics learning approach (PMR). This research uses a quantitative research approach with quasi-experimental methods. The samples used in each research were 30 students (experimental class) and 30 students (control class) in elementary schools in several schools around the city of Rantauprapat. The results of this study indicate that (1) an increase in mathematical communication skills of students who are given a realistic approach is higher than students who are given conventional learning, (2) there is an interaction between learning approaches with students' initial ability to improve mathematical communication skills and mathematical self-efficacy, and (3) the process of solving students' mathematical communication using a realistic mathematics learning approach is better than the conventional approach. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that PMR is better than conventional mathematical approaches in improving students' mathematical communication skills and self-efficacy.

The adoption of customer orientation by an SME hotel trying to fight for excellence in a robust competition has drawn the writer’s interest. The research question to answer is: How the SME hotel adopts the customer orientation to respond to the competition and the changing environment. The research approach is qualitative. The informants are members of the hotel management staff having hands on managerial and supervisory responsibilities. Besides interviews, the writer conducted observation and triangulation. The result of this research shows that the hotel adopts customer orientation informally. They collect, distribute and respond to the information in line with their limited knowledge and capability in a financial constraint. A unique work culture of ‘gotong royong’ is created where efforts are aimed at responding to customers’ interest, satisfaction and value The inductive process in this research enables the writer to construct a mini theory which should be proved true by quantitative researches.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on a case study of 93 parents’ attitude toward their involvement at various levels of school education in a special school. It also examines the relations between parents’ education backgrounds and different levels of parental involvement. Design/methodology/approach – This study adopted quantitative research approach. A questionnaire composed of 30 items under six scales was developed with reference to Ng’s (1999) six-level Model of Home-School Cooperation which was adopted to frame the study. Findings – The study indicates that parents’ inclined to be involved more outside the school including “two-way communication,” “supervision of children at home” and “participation in parent organizations and activities” than that inside the school such as “volunteering,” “providing advice on school policies” and “participating in decision making.” Research limitations/implications – In spite of its small scale in a case-study special school, the paper does not aim at generalization but illuminates how parental involvement was carried out. Practical implications – The study carries implications for school management and policy makers when promoting and implementing parental involvement in special schools. Originality/value – For the school personnel, a total and positive relationship could help enhance efficient and effective management of education. Second, more resources should be provided by the Education Bureau for special schools to educate parents and subsidize their involvement. Third, more training opportunities regarding knowledge and skills of parental involvement should be provided for frontline teachers.
