The return to ovulation following early abortion: a comparison between vacuum aspiration and prostaglandin

Abstract. The return to ovulation following early abortion (≤ 56 days amenorrhea) has been assessed after both vacuum aspiration under general anesthesia (N = 14) and menstrual induction with 16,16 dimethyltrans-Δ2PGE1 methyl ester in pessary form (N = 18). The urinary excretion of hCG, total estrogen and pregnanediol was similar in each group. There was an initial rapid decline in hCG excretion (t½ 48 h), reaching 10% of the pre-treatment value after 6 days. Twenty-nine (91%) women showed a luteal phase rise in pregnanediol excretion, with ovulation occurring on day 29 (16–37) and 24 (16–32) in the vacuum aspiration and prostaglandin groups, respectively (median (range) NS). The wide range in the return of ovarian activity was related to the variation in decline of progesterone secretion (as reflected by excretion of pregnanediol) by the corpus luteum. Asynchrony between the ovarian and menstrual cycles resulting from a delay to ovulation presents a major constraint to the use of early pregnancy interruption as a routine method of fertility control.

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate endocrine profiles and to determine the morphological and functional characteristics of corpora lutea (CL) following the onset of postpartum ovarian activity in beef cows, suckled by a single calf once daily. In exp. 1, blood samples were collected from 12 cows at 6-h intervals beginning 25 days postpartum until ovariectomy which was carried out on each of two cows on days 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35 after parturition. Ovarian structures were examined grossly and histologically. In exp. 2, blood samples were collected from eight cows at 6-h intervals for 18 days beginning 25 days postpartum and at less frequent intervals thereafter. Laparotomies were carried out on day 36 after calving, the ovaries were observed, CL were sampled and the residual tissue was marked with charcoal. A second laparotomy was performed on day 50. Luteal tissue samples were processed and examined by light and electron microscopy. Luteal cell types were evaluated, percent of area covered by large cells was determined and average luteal cell diameter was calculated. In exp. 3, seven cows were bled daily from parturition until day 25 postpartum. Serum from all experiments was assayed for progesterone (P4), FSH, LH and a prostaglandin metabolite (PGFM). The data showed that serum PGFM levels declined from a peak at calving to basal levels by 10 days postpartum which was well before the first ovulation. In all instances the observed peaks of serum LH and serum FSH preceded the first rise in P4 which, in eight of nine cases, was due to a functional CL. These CL were functional for periods of time ranging from 3 to 12 days. The regression of short-lived CL appeared abnormal compared to the longer-lived CL in which regression was characterized by a rapid decline in P4 and elevated blood PGFM. These data show clearly that the first increase in P4 is preceded by a typical LH surge, followed by ovulation and CL formation which has a variable life-span. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is an essential vegetable crop with good nutritional significance. Insect pests are the major threat for poor production of the okra crop. Thrips of vegetable crops are known to be serious pests on a wide range of fruit, vegetable, flower, and agronomic crops. The present field study was carried out to know the efficacy of different insecticides (acetamiprid 19% weightable water (ww), lambda 25% ww, colarphipare 32% ww, lambda 2.5% ww and abamectin 1.3% ww) against Thrips, Thrips tabaci (Lindeman) on okra crop during the year 2019, and observations against T. tabaci (Lindeman) were recorded after 24 hrs, 48 hrs, 72 hrs and 07 days of each spray in all the treatments. The pre-treatment count of thrips on okra was non-significant (P > 0.05); while the evaluated efficacy of different insecticides against thrips was significant (P < 0.01). It was noted that all the insecticides showed their highest efficacy after 7 days of spray and acetamiprid 19% weightable water (ww) was more efficient to combat the T. tabaci as compared to other pesticides that produced field efficacy of 73.92 and 74.91% against thrips after 7 days of 1st and 2nd spray respectively. Abamectin, 1.3% ww, was reasonably successful, yielding 53.81 and 56.66% field efficacy against T. tabaci (Lindeman) after 7 days of first and second spray. Also, moderately effective was colarphipare 32% ww, which developed field effectiveness of 56.41 and 61.49% against T. tabaci (Lindeman) after 7 days of first and second spray, respectively.

In recent decades, the Internet of flying networks has made significant progress. Several aerial vehicles communicate with one another to form flying ad hoc networks. Unmanned aerial vehicles perform a wide range of tasks that make life easier for humans. However, due to the high frequency of mobile flying vehicles, network problems such as packet loss, latency, and perhaps disrupted channel links arise, affecting data delivery. The use of UAV-enabled IoT in sports has changed the dynamics of tracking and working on player safety. WBAN can be merged with aerial vehicles to collect data regarding health and transfer it to a base station. Furthermore, the unbalanced energy usage of flying things will result in earlier mission failure and a rapid decline in network lifespan. This study describes the use of each UAV’s residual energy level to ensure a high level of safety using an ant-based routing technique called AntHocNet. In health care, the use of IoT-assisted aerial vehicles would increase operational performance, surveillance, and automation optimization to provide a smart application of flying IoT. Apart from that, aerial vehicles can be used in remote communication for treatment, medical equipment distribution, and telementoring. While comparing routing algorithms, simulation findings indicate that the proposed ant-based routing protocol is optimal.

The process of positioning a region is one of the most important tools for attracting investment to a territory. In turn, the methods of work of the human health management system, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of the population. However, effective tools for positioning the region, which take into account the geographical location, recreational conditions of the territory, the available opportunities, its cultural, national and ethnic identification, as well as differences, have not yet been proposed. This is evidenced by the low level of investment in the regions, the weak development of the real sector of the territory's economy, the rapid decline in the living standards of most of the region's residents, and, as a consequence, the growth in the rate of population migration. Thus, the formation of tools for positioning and identification of the region, which allows you to determine their competitive advantages, is a basic prerequisite for ensuring the economic development of the territory. In modern conditions of the transfer of powers and budgets of state bodies to local governments, the positioning of the region becomes a possible condition for their competitiveness. The article discusses the interpretation of the concept of "positioning", in particular, two of its basic components are highlighted: positioning as a strategy, positioning as a set of actions. Approaches to the positioning of the brand of the region are analyzed, where the region is considered from the position of a unique phenomenon and a complex product with a wide range of properties. The signs of a successful brand are determined, the main goals of branding, assessment, classification of models and stages of positioning the region are highlighted. and also: diagnosis of the situation, formulation of the essence of the brand, a strategic plan for brand promotion. implementation of the strategic plan, assessment of the effectiveness of the formed brand.


Nausea and vomiting are common and distressing symptoms of cancer and its treatments. Treatment-related nausea and vomiting are covered in depth, including pre-treatment assessment, the emetogenic level of chemotherapy drugs, and pharmacological management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. An evidence-based treatment algorithm is described, covering the wide range of possible anti-emetics. Non-pharmacological options are also described. There is also a section on anticipatory nausea and vomiting. Nausea and vomiting in advanced cancer are covered separately. The multifactorial nature of this is discussed, with a focus on different anti-emetic regimes, as well as nursing management, including detailed assessment and ongoing nutritional and psychological support.

We developed a panel of highly specific monoclonal antibodies (MAb) against dog Type V collagen. Each antibody showed differential reactivities towards Type V collagen from other species. All the antibodies were highly reactive in conventional ELISA, as well as with electroblots of collagen after polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using non-denaturing conditions. The MAb were shown to be suitable for the immunohistological detection of Type V collagen in tissue sections, although this normally required pre-treatment of sections with 50 mM acetic acid. In particular, the antibodies were shown to be useful for examining samples of a collagen-based biomaterial, a vascular prosthesis, after explant from evaluation in an animal model. This showed that Type V collagen was most prominent in regions of new tissue formation within the neointima, close to the inner surface of the prosthesis. The broad spectrum of differential reactivities allows the antibodies to be used for a wide range of experimental models. These MAb therefore provide a novel approach for the evaluation of biomaterial performance, particularly for collagen-based implants.

Jugular blood samples were obtained from 10.5 kg and 28 kg lambs receiving a diet of reconstituted cows' whole milk. The lambs were then given diets in which the proportion of essential amino acids (BAA) in the dietary crude protein was altered over a wide range. A second blood sample was taken after lambs had received such diets for 12 days. Plasma obtained from these samples was analysed for free amino acids, urea and ammonia. The pattern of plasma free amino acids (PFAA) in lambs given reconstituted cows' whole milk is described. In both the pre-treatment and post-treatment samples, the heavier lambs appeared to have lower plasma levels of all EAA, and high plasma levels of glycine, serine, urea and ammonia. In the lighter lambs, there were pronounced responses of PFAA levels to changes in the dietary proportion of EAA. At low proportions, the levels of most EAA in plasma were low. Lysine and phenylalanine were exceptions. In addition, levels of many non-essential amino acids (non-EAA), particularly serine and glycine, were high. At high proportions of EAA, plasma levels of all EAA, especially methionine, rose markedly. Within the non-EAA, serine, proline and glycine were reduced, while taurine and cystathionine increased. In the plasma of the heavier lambs, the response of some amino acids to a given dietary change differed from the response in the lighter lambs. This was especially true of methionine, tyrosine, phenylalanine and arginine. There was also marked between-animal variation in plasma levels. When expressed as molar proportions of total PFAA, results were similar to those of the lighter lambs. There was a pronounced similarity between the response of the PFAA to diets with a low proportion of EAA, and the PFAA pattern characteristic of developing kwashiorkor. __________________ *Part II, Aust. Casuarina littoralis seedlings are inherently more drought-resistant than Eucalyptus ovata seedlings over a wide range of environmental conditions. Moderate shade pre-treatment (30% of full daylight) decreased the drought resistance of seedlings of E. ovata, Acacia pycnantha and C. stricta but not that of C. littoralis seedlings. Deep shade pre-treatment (8 % of full daylight) decreased the drought resistance of all species and was associated with decreased rootlshoot ratios. Both shaded and non-shaded C. littoralis seedlings closed stomata at higher relative water contents (about 80% and 88 % respectively) than did E. ovata seedlings (about 36 % and 63 % respectively). Shading decreased the relative water content at which E. ovata closed stomata and reduced the relative decrease in water potential which occurred with unit decreases in relative water content. When E. ovata and C. littoralis seedlings were grown in competition, the larger E. ovata dominated the drought response of plants under both high and low light conditions. E. ovata rapidly depleted moisture supplies thereby subjecting C. littoralis to greater stress and earlier death than it experienced in monoculture. C. littoralis seedlings grown and droughted in competition with E. ovata exhibited smaIIer decreases in water potential per unit decrease in relative water content than seedlings grown in monoculture. The height growth of E. ovata grown in monoculture and in competition with C. littoralis was reduced for at least 10-15 weeks after the wilting treatment, but height growth of C. littoralis was not affected. Eucalypts wilted at higher water potentials (-4.3 MPa) than did C. littoralis seedlings (- 6.3 MPa). It is suggested that the replacement of E. ovata by C. littoralis at Ocean Grove, Vic. may be partly due to the differential effects of shading on the drought resistance of seedlings which become established in the grass sward of canopy gaps.

Four experiments were conducted by using individual aggregates and ground samples of different soils and a range of wetting pre-treatments to investigate the effect of wetting on the desorption moisture characteristic of Vertisols. Wetting rate was varied by manipulating the energy of the water used to wet up the soil. Fast wetting was found to increase moisture uptake in Vertisols over a wide range of matric potentials (to -38 MPa in one soil). At high matric potentials, additional water uptake ranged up to 0.26 g g-l. These results were attributed to the creation of planar voids within soils between small water-stable aggregates on fast wetting. These voids retained water at matric potentials as low as -90 kPa. At this potential, 40% of additional water taken up on fast wetting was still retained in one soil. At -1500 kPa, fast wet soils retained up to 1.2 times more moisture relative to slow wet soils. The effect of wetting at potentials of -1500 kPa and less appeared to be related to the smectite content of the soil clay fraction and the degree of order of clay quasi-crystals. The soil which showed the greatest effect of fast wetting at these potentials had a less well ordered clay micro-structure. These findings have relevance to field studies, as variations in maximum field soil moisture content, with depth, could be reproduced by tension wetting pre-treatments. This result indicates that reduced rate of subsoil wetting may be responsible for the decrease in maximum field water contents with increasing soil depth, which has been observed in Vertisols. Such profiles have previously been attributed to the effect of overburden and stress potentials alone.
