This special issue wants to honour the memory of Giulio Regeni, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge who was assassinated while he was conducting field research on independent trade unions in Egypt. This introduction and the following articles focus on the theoretical, empirical and methodological questions at the core of Regeni’s research. Unions have traditionally been regarded as crucial for representing the interests of the working class as a whole and for building and sustaining industrial and political democracy; however, there is a debate about the conditions under which unions can be effective, and the role of unions’ internal democracy is particularly controversial. The article discusses the theoretical linkages between trade unions, democratization and union democracy and concludes with a reflection on the new concerns about the risk of conducting field research on these issues raised by Regeni’s death.

The so called Ginásios Vocacionais (Vocational Gymnasiums) were an institution created in São Paulo State (Brazil) in 1962 and extinguished by the Brazilian Dictatorial Government in 1968. The main intention of this paper is to discuss some features of the teaching and learning of Mathematics in such schools. Some data on the general educational context are presented in order to support the discussion about the two central issues of this article: the role of Mathematics in a curricular framework in which integration among disciplines was one of the main principles; and the influence of New Math in these Gymnasiums. This paper is based in a research developed using Oral History as its main methodological guide.

Background: Despite the significant role of nurses in end-of-life care, their attitudes towards euthanasia are under-represented both in the current literature and the controversial debate that is ongoing in several countries. Research questions: What are the attitudes towards euthanasia among Finnish nurses? Which characteristics are associated with those attitudes? Research design: Cross-sectional web-based survey. Participants and research context: A total of 1003 nurses recruited via the members’ bulletin of the Finnish Nurses Association and social media. Ethical considerations: Ethical approval was obtained from the Committee on Research Ethics of the university to which the authors were affiliated. Findings: The majority (74.3%) of the participants would accept euthanasia as part of Finnish healthcare, and 61.8% considered that Finland would benefit from a law permitting euthanasia. Most of the nurses (89.9%) thought that a person must have the right to decide on his or her own death; 77.4% of them considered it likely that they would themselves make a request for euthanasia in certain situations. Discussion: The value of self-determination and the ability to choose the moment and manner of one’s death are emphasized in the nurses’ attitudes towards euthanasia. Conclusion: A continuous dialogue about euthanasia and nurses’ shared values is crucial due to the conflict between nurses’ attitudes and current ethical guidelines on nursing.

Paulo Nenflidio

Paulo Nenflidio, in his biographic note, presents himself as an artist who works at the intersection between art, science and technology. A multiple and inventive artist, his works comprise sculptures, installations, objects, instruments and drawings in which sound, electronics, movement, construction, invention, randomness, physics, control, automatons, and workaround come together as elements of artistic expression. Paulo Nenflidio holds a degree in Fine Arts from the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo and is an electronics technician graduated from the Lauro Gomes Technical School in São Bernardo do Campo. Born in São Bernardo do Campo, the artist maintains his studio in this city. In this interview, we seek to deepen our study about the poetics of Paulo Nenflidio's works. How his creative trajectory developed, conceptual inspirations that guided the development of his creative processes and his artistic research, as well as the role of sound and silence as forms of poetic expression are issues addressed in this conversation. This interview was conducted by email, between the 20th and 24th of July 2021.

This essay examines the temporal structure of George Eliot’s novel The Mill on the Floss (1860) from the perspective of energy and ecology, arguing that Eliot’s well-established interest in epochal shift extends to a searching and prescient inquiry into the temporality of energy and energy regime transition. The novel is set at a water-powered mill in the historical moment that saw an unprecedented energy transition in British industry from water power to coal-fired steam power—the moment that saw the birth of what Andreas Malm calls “the fossil economy”—and it distinguishes between the variant temporalities of these two energy regimes. The essay connects The Mill on the Floss’s dual temporality to our present moment of ecological crisis and its demand that we, as critics, shift not so much from an eco-historicism to an eco-presentism, but toward a temporally doubled methodology that inhabits the present and the past dialectically.

Abstract: Little is known about how perceptions of government affects women’s views of violence against women. This qualitative study examines women’s perceptions of violence against women laws and trust in the health and legal sector response in São Paulo State, Brazil. Thirty interviews with female residents of Santo André, 18 years and older, were audio recorded, transcribed, coded, and analyzed for themes using MAXQDA12 software. All women were familiar with at least one federal violence against women law. They expressed widespread lack of trust in the government. They viewed the legal sector as ineffective and felt violence against women laws have little impact, or exacerbate violence. Disdain for the health sector was less prominent than for the legal sector. A generalized lack of trust in government manifests as a lack of confidence in these laws for women seeking support through legal and health sectors. Adoption of legal protections for women is a significant accomplishment. However, health and legal sector violence against women response needs to consider perceptions of government, how violence against women laws are operationalized, and the role of each sector in ensuring women’s safety. Violence against women response efforts should include standardized intersectoral procedures including referral to accessible resources and means of screening women who may be at high risk for femicide.

e4526152This interview with Professor Miguel G. Arroyo was carried out on the left side shores of the Xingu River, in Altamira (PA), in July (2th) 2019. The interview occurred during his participation in the 1st Academic Ethnodiversity Conference (JAETNO) at Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), Brazil. Arroyo was impressed with the city of Altamira and spoke strictly about the national context we are experiencing at the moment: From the perspective of concrete historical factors, attacks on human sciences, and education, specifically attacks towards childhood. Uneasy about the issues and their interactions with different areas of knowledge, Arroyo led us to reflect on the role of the resistance of educators in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region. Keywords: Amazon, Ethnodiversity, Education, Resistence.Palabras claves: Amazonas, Etnodiversidad, Educación, Resistencia.ReferencesARROYO, Miguel G.
