In the course of the present study, surveys on occurrence and distribution of ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi in tropical sal forests of foothills of the Himalayas, India, were undertaken. The species of two genera of agarics, namely Asproinocybe and Inocybe, were found organically associated with the roots of Shorea robusta (sal tree). However, prior to our study the genus Asproinocybe has not been reported from India. In this article, the morpho-anatomical details of mycorrhizal roots of Shorea robusta associated with Asproinocybe lactifera and Inocybe purpureoflavida are provided for the first time. The EcM colonized roots of the two species are distinguished by differences in the shape and colour of the roots, surface texture, size and shape of cystidia, type of mantle, as well as different chemical reactions. Asproinocybe lactifera EcM is mainly characterised by a monopodial pinnate mycorrhizal system with the dark brown to reddish brown and loose cottony surface, while in Inocybe purpureoflavida it is irregularly pinnate to coralloid, silvery grey to reddish brown, with densely woolly surface. The outer mantle layer is heterogeneous with obclavate to awl-shaped cystidia in Asproinocybe lactifera, whereas Inocybe purpureoflavida EcM have a plectenchymatous outer mantle with subcylindrical to obclavate metuloidal and non-metuloidal cystidia. The presence of lactifers in the mantle is a unique feature in Asproinocybe lactifera as compared to Inocybe purpureoflavida.

The associations of the incidence of snoring with ethnicity and sex were measured using self-report data collected from 1098 university undergraduates. Both the relationships were significant. The unique feature of these data is that for the first time, a significant relationship between ethnicity and snoring has been reported.

In this study, Helichrysum × kani-isikii (Asteraceae), a new natural hybrid of H. compactum and H. unicapitatum from Babadağ (Denizli, Turkey), is described and investigated in detail for the first time. The new nothospecies is similar to H. compactum and H. unicapitatum, but it has some intermediate morphological and palynological properties that position it between the two putative parents. In the diagnosis of the hybrid, pollen size and shape were found as significant characteristics. Taxonomic, morphological, and palynological characteristics of H. × kani-isikii are compared with those of its putative parents, and some other details are presented with notes on the IUCN category and ecology of the nothospecies. In addition, a key to diagnosing the hybrid from its parental taxa is also provided.

Accurate surface texture design is of great significance to improve the performances of gas bearings. In this article, the finite difference method and Newton’s method were combined to obtain the oil film pressure distribution, and the effect of rectangular groove on the lubrication performance was analyzed by changing representative texture parameters. The results show that the performances were more affected by the rectangular texture size compared with the distribution and the bottom shape of texture. The increasing of the surface texture number can only enhance the stability of the bearing. The bearing can provide 30% more bearing capacity by choosing larger size, radial arrangement and plane bottom. These results and analysis can provide technical reference for the bearing texture design.

The paper is devoted to the issues of energy saving automatic control of radial burden distribution in the blast furnace throat. The main idea consists in control with prediction of the control resulting on the basis of automatic monitoring of burden surface texture. The paper develops the mathematic description of burden surface texture on the blast furnace throat by means of substantiation of minimum quantity of general indicators of the mixture being closely related to the main parameters of blast furnace processes. It is the first time that the optimum value of hoper depth in burden surface at 0.14 – 0.2 of throat diameter determined, the methods of its stabilization at the rate are substantiated, the new regularity of burden surface formation on the operating blast furnace throat is shown as consisting in the fact that the hoper depth on the surface is mainly changed responding the process of material charge rather than bulk material descent after the charge. It was also substantiated for the first time that radioisotopic methods for current control of burden distribution on the blast furnace throat provide timely formation of control actions for gas flow stabilization. The principle of self-tuning was theoretically substantiated for monitoring system of gamma profilometer responding to the monitoring conditions with respect to high penetration and random character of gamma rays. The principle enables significant improvement of accuracy, quick-response and radiological safety of gamma profilometer operation. The possibility of determination of burden surface texture on the throat of operating blast furnace and distribution of burden components according to infrared radiation of the surface without application of radiation hazardous monitoring means was proved for the first time.

In monographs on Trifolium L., in «Atlas of seeds and fruits of the Central and East” as well as in articles published in prestigious journals the importance of seed characteristics in the taxonomy of clovers is pointed. Among the signs of seeds, the shape of the surface, the structure, size, and shape of their hilum are recorded. In addition, in many «Flora» and «Determinants» there is no data of the seeds, especially their micromorphological features in the description of the species of clover. Takinginto account the above, we studied the shape and structure of 8 species of clovers under an electron microscope. For the first time, micromorphological features of seeds of 8 species (T. angustifolium, T. pratense, T. lappaceum, T. subterraneum, T. resupinatum, T. tumens, T. campestre) of clovers (Trifolium L.) of the Talysh flora, collected from the Lankaran-Lerik region of the Azerbaijan Republic, belonging to 4 subgroups and 6 sections were studied on an electron microscope (SEM). The shape of the seeds, their size, color, surface structure, the shape of hilum and their sizes are important taxonomic features. The structure of seeds of the studied species refers to 4 types: seeds with granular surfaces; seeds with tuberculate surfaces; seeds, which have a surface with crystal-like ledges. Features of the structure of seeds can be used, when specifying the status of subgenera; and sections, the remaining morphological features — when determining species of the genus of clover.

Mucor inaequisporus Dade (Mucorales, Mucoromycota) was isolated for the first time from soil in an area of Atlantic Forest in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. It is distinguished from other species by simultaneously producing erect, undulating and curved sporangiophores, as well as mostly pyriform, oblong, conic, ellipsoid, and obovoid columellae. The sporangiospores vary in size and shape, with some irregular in shape. Aspects of the morphology and distribution of this species are commented on.

SUMMARYThis report describes a new touch sensing concept in which active, exploratory touching resembles the manner in which humans use their fingertips. The concept utilizes the vibrations produced during sliding motion of the sensor to provide information for characterizing objects and features. The sensing system consists of a textured compliant artificial “skin”, a transduction element, and means for recognizing items of interest.A relatively simple prototype was fabricated and tested for a range of potentially useful tactile tasks. Results from these experiments demonstrate the promise of the concept. The prototype sensor is shown to be effective at recognizing feature size and shape, patterns of features, feature orientation, feature position, and surface texture.

AbstractThe Rosetum exercitiorum spiritualium et sacrarum meditationum of Johannes Mauburnus is considered the most extensive and influential treatise on meditation in the circles of the late Devotio Moderna. It was printed in five editions from the late fifteenth to the early seventeenth century. Besides instructions for numerous meditations of varying length, this treatise contains seven religious songs which were intended to stir up the emotions and facilitate the correct disposition for meditation. These songs were created as contrafacts, meaning that the newly composed texts were sung to well-known melodies of liturgical hymns and religious songs. In song rubrics, Mauburnus gives precise instructions about their function as an aid to summoning the motivation for the great number of spiritual exercises that had to be accomplished by the adherents of the Devotio Moderna every day. A unique feature of the Rosetum is the combination of a concrete meditation with a corresponding written song. These songs have not yet been examined systematically. The texts were edited by Guido Maria Dreves in Analecta hymnica on the basis of the edition printed in Paris in 1510. The melodies have not yet been reconstructed. In this article, the seven contrafacts are studied for the first time from the point of view of their structure and function, and their melodies are reconstructed on the basis of liturgical sources associated with the Devotio Moderna.
