This paper identifies whether there was a performance difference among micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) led by men and by women in Vietnam during the period 2005–2013 and aims to provide explanations for the differences, if any, in various performance indicators. The paper adopts a quantitative approach using a firm-level panel dataset in the manufacturing sector in 10 provinces/cities in Vietnam in five waves from 2005 to 2013. Fixed effect models are estimated to examine the influence of firm variables and demographic, human capital characteristics of owners/managers on firms’ value added, labor productivity and employment creation. We found that men led MSMEs did not outperform those led by women on average. Although the average value added was lower for female-led firms in the informal sector, the opposite was true in the formal sector where women tend to lead medium-size firms with higher value added and labor productivity. The performance disparity was more envisaged across levels of formality and less clear from a gender perspective. Moreover, while firms owned by businessmen seemed to create more jobs, firms owned by women had a higher share of female employees. No significant difference in business constraints faced by women and by men was found.

The research area is very interesting to study to determine the characterization of the active tectonic influence of the Cisanggarung watershed, West Java. The research area is in Kuningan Regency, West Java. The purpose of this study was to determine the Relative Tectonic Activity Index (Iatr) in the Cisanggarung Watershed. Through the method approach used to identify the Relative Tectonic Activity Index (Iatr) using geomorphic indexes, watershed asymmetry factors (Af), watershed shape index (Bs), valley width, and height valley ratio (Vf), and mountainous face sinusitis (Smf). The Iatr research area is divided into 4 classes: Class 1 (very high), class 2 (high), class 3 (medium), and class 4 (low). Iatr distribution in 14 sub-watersheds covering an area of 286.24 km2 is Class 1 around 14.44% of the watershed area (41.35 km2) which is located in sub-watershed 1, with Smf values 1.157, Vf 0.3, Af 72.15, and Bs 4.3. Class 2 around 28.67% of the watershed area (82.09 km2) is located in sub-watershed 14, with Smf values 1.26, Vf 0.77, Af 15.69, Bs 1.01. Class 3 around 54.16% of the watershed area (155.03 km2) is located in sub-watersheds 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, with an average value of Smf 2, Vf 1.54, Af 51.77, Bs 1.75, and Class 4 about 2.71% of the watershed area (7.76 km2) is located in sub- watersheds 4, 5, 9, 13, with an average value of Smf 2.25, Vf 8.18, Af 55.2, Bs 1.65. The results of the morphometric analysis indicated that the study area was mostly affected by tectonics and erosion.

The production, or value added, approach to GDP involves calculating an industry or sector’s output and subtracting its intermediate consumption (the goods and services used to produce the output) to derive its value added. The value added at the macro level depends on business efficiency. It reflects an increase in value that a business creates by undertaking the production process. We assumed that the market creates thousands of vibrating energies, coming from other enterprises, with different frequencies. The purpose of this article is to verify whether the econophysics approach could be successfully used to assess a business from the perspective of the interaction between economic forces. Thus, we propose that the term ‘value added’ be understood as a certain amount of accumulated energy of enterprises that comes from the interaction of basic economic forces and economic vibrating forces of accounting. Using regression models, we show the influence of basic forces, like debt and the stock market, and vibrating ones (i.e., accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory) on the economic value added by testing US, European, and emerging markets. We confirmed the relevance and appropriateness of the econophysics approach to estimating the economic value added.

We examine access to effective teachers for low-income students in 26 geographically dispersed school districts over a 5-year period. We measure teacher effectiveness using a value-added model that accounts for measurement error in prior test scores and peer effects. Differences between the average value added of teachers of high- and low-income students are 0.005 standard deviations in English/language arts and 0.004 standard deviations in math. Differences between teachers of Black, Hispanic, and White students are also small. Rearranging teachers to obtain perfect equity would do little to narrow the sizable student achievement gap between low- and high-income students. We also show that a higher proportion of novice teachers in high-poverty schools contributes negligibly to differences in access to effective teachers.

This chapter provides basic understanding of firm performance in emerging markets by focusing on labor productivity and total factor productivity. In the study, labor productivity is measured in terms of average value added per worker. Total factor productivity is obtained from estimations of Cobb-Douglas production function where value added is a function of labor and capital. Data is obtained from the firm-level Enterprise Surveys by the World Bank. According to the results, differences in average labor productivities are significant among the sectors within each emerging region. Also, the value of factor elasticities changes across sectors as well as across regions. Moreover, the elasticity of capital is lower than the elasticity of labor for all sectors in regions. It implies that labor plays a more significant role and the firms are operating in a more labor-intensive production process in emerging markets.

The reality of the language usage that exists in Indonesia is still apprehensive. If we observed, until now there are so many language usages in public spaces, both billboards and instructional boards still use foreign languages or a mix between Indonesian language and foreign languages. That reality of language is not relevant with the legislations which prevail in Indonesia because the legislations stipulate the preferential using of Indonesian language in public space. However, the legislations about language are not well known by the society, so they still prefer using the foreign languages. This research aimed to reveal the knowledge of rural Sundanese society in Garut and Cianjur Regency, West Java about the language regulations. This research used quantitative approach with survey method. The result showed that in general the knowledge of rural Sundanese society in Garut and Cianjur Regency, West Java about language regulations can be categorized not good because the average value only reached 34.25% of the ideal standard.

This study aims to develop appropriate strategies for increasing the added value of andaliman (Zantoxylum Acanthopodium) in Toba Samosir Regency which affects the economy of stakeholders. The steps taken are: i) gathering information on production of andaliman producing centers namely Habinsaran, Bor-bor, Nassau, Lumban Julu, Ajibata, and Silaen Districts, ii) identification / analysis of supply chain models iii) analyzing the role / influence and mapping of the parties stakeholder iv) value added analysis of each link in the supply chain. There are two types of methods applied and included in the descriptive-exploratory method. First, the qualitative method includes the study of literature in obtaining work data / references, observations, interviews with value chain actors and government. Second, the quantitative method with Hayami's calculation to find out the added value of andaliman. Facts show that the area of productive land of andaliman is ± 62.9 hectares with a production capacity of ± 417.2 tons / year. There are two supply chain models, namely fresh and processed andaliman. Then the value chain mapping is done to find out the R / C value from the margins of each supply chain node. When the reliable price is neutral to high, the R / C value range is between 1.08 and 1.73, which indicates that each actor will profit. However, if the reliable price is low, the R / C value is between 0.85 to 1.9 with this condition, there are actors who are greatly disadvantaged or disadvantaged. The results related to the value chain map revealed that optimal value engineering has not been proven to be optimal from the products produced by the supply chain are far below the potential potential value. SWOT analysis provides information on opportunities and challenges of developing supply chains to increase the value of andaliman products. The end of this research is a recommendation to increase added value strategies, including increasing product diversification, creating special centers for andaliman processing, etc.
