This article deals with Sufism in Ethiopia, how people came to affiliate themselves to certain Ṣūfī orders and how the ṭarīqa, or Ṣūfī order, underwent change in providing alternative ways for Muslims to follow their career under the present regime. The first part of this article will show how Islam was introduced into the region, i.e. in and around Ǧimma Zone, and how the royal family was instrumental in the Islamization process. The role of the royal family in the Islamization process is central to understanding why Tiǧāniyya, the most popular Ṣūfī order in the region, became widespread in the region. The second part deals with the careers and life histories of some Tiǧānī masters, widely known in the region. The careers of these masters reveal that personal connections and networks extended both nationwide and abroad. The third part places Tiǧāniyya in the politics of religion under the present regime. The 2006 incident in which Muslim radicals attacking Orthodox Christians in the region revealed that the Christian community was not unaffected by internal Muslim strife. Thereafter, the government chose to support one Muslim wing against the other. Affiliation to ṭarīqa is becoming a political stance and, in recent years, Tiǧāniyya, the most visible ṭarīqa in and around Ǧimma, is increasingly being co-opted by the present regime.

Particularly in Creon’s debate with Haemon, and from then on, Sophocles shows distinct aspects of how anger acts on the tyrant’s ability to judge and how this can be related to inextricable familial and political ties. As every modern reading of the play applies a philosophical conceptualization to understand emotions and thus suffer the consequences of a historical gap between interpretative and original vocabularies, this paper argues that the Aristotelian conceptualization of emotions is a relevant philosophical tool to better contextualize Creon’s anger in Sophocles’ Antigone. The essay discusses Creon’s thymetic responses in the face of Haemon’s admonition and Antigone’s oligoria, and offers two examples of Aristotelian readings of Creon’s thymetic akrasia. One of the possible readings considers the specific role of phantasia in Creon’s understanding of reality. This philosophical explanation of a revengeful tyrant reveals important connections between psychology and politics in the government of the city.

This chapter examines the role of exotica in the Egyptian mind. Egypt’s involvement with exotic flora and fauna began in earnest in the Old Kingdom, which flourished during the final two-thirds of the third millennium. The best evidence for Old Kingdom exotica comes from several pharaonic funerary monuments, but more often from the tombs of the notables buried near their kings. Many of these officials, courtiers, and members of the royal family had commercial and diplomatic responsibilities that brought them into direct or indirect contact with foreign lands and peoples. Cedar, myrrh, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and elephant ivory were among the desirable commodities that had to be obtained from beyond the Nile Valley and Delta. Animals and plants were sometimes shipped as well, either as additional items in a consignment or as early examples of royal and elite gift exchange. Indeed, the notables’ tombs include numerous scenes of exotic creatures being caged, watered, fed, and otherwise tended.

In interacting with other nations within the international level, Indonesia’s traditional diplomacy is conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Here, it plays a role as the representative of the government. However, in today’s advanced era, diplomacy is an instrument that should involve every component of the society, including the migrant workers”. The current problematic is that there are hundreds to millions of Indonesian migrant workers residing in other countries but Indonesia has failed to actualize these workers as power for its foreign policy. Every year, hundred of thousands of Indonesians migrate to other countries to work. These workers reside in various countries all over the world, including in ASEAN countries. Malaysia has the second largest number of Indonesian migrant workers after Saudi Arabia. Until today, these Indonesian migrants are merely considered as labor force. They are not valued as structural importance who has bargaining power in diplomatic practice. The purpose of this writing is to operationalize the concept of multi track diplomacy in an attempt to enforce the role of migrant workers as a non-diplomatic group to further strengthen Indonesia’s diplomatic posture. As an agent of the third-track diplomacy, this writing will further describe the role of migrant workers as the foundation of diplomatic strength.

The first part of the article explores the peculiarities of issuing newspaper in the early XX century, the circumstances of A. A. Bashmakov's appointment to the post, his daily tasks as the editor, and criticism of the published materials. In conclusion, the author analyzes the results achieved by A. A. Bashmakov. The research employs a range of poorly studied archival sources and newspaper materials, as well as reminiscences. The novelty of this work is defined by the absence of information about A. A. This article contributes to the study of functionality of government print media in 1906 – 1907, which are the first years of A. A. Bashmakov in the role of editor-in-chief.. In feuilletons and articles, the editor-in-chief had an opportunity to express personal point of view on various matters. The content of the “Addendum to the Government Gazette” was left to his discretion; however, the newspaper was shut down due to reasons beyond control of the editor-in-chief.

In order to understand fully the proposed communication circuit between map maker and map reader, one may turn to a variety of tools, such as semiotics, the framework for my map image analysis. The investigation of colour, shapes, symbols, and text on maps of Third-Republic Paris help uncover underlying themes of modernity, stability, ease of movement, and growth. There are also benefits to be gained from working with maps. The visual nature of the medium has the potential to draw a reader’s eye much more effectively than pages and pages of black and white script. Beyond discourse, this chapter also investigates the changing role of the French state in the history of cartography. With a population that could more readily access and understand maps as the Third Republic progressed, cartography helped foster the growing field of French urbanism and planning. Furthermore, the government shifted from presenting what it had accomplished in Paris throughout the Third Republic to planning and managing its growth and state cartography needed to adapt. An investigation of historic cartographic colour printing techniques will show how this is done and support this book’s map analysis.

Several socio-economic policies initiated by various governments in Nigeria have failed to curb the evil effects of social inequality risks (SIR). Lagos State being the country's commercial capital city, is worse hit by virtue of its huge population. Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, is ordained to bridge this gap that SIR creates by redistributing income among the citizenry. This study is intended to explore how zakat institutions have been effective in complementing Government's initiatives at combating social inequality risks in Lagos-Nigeria. The study utilized data gathered from 500 middle-class respondents randomly selected in Lagos's middle-class location via an online survey channel by identifying five SIR dimensions. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25, while descriptive and Multiple Regression analysis were used as tools for the data analysis. Findings suggest that SIR is still endemic in the study area which mirrored the near ineffectiveness of zakat institutions. In addition, the available zakat institutions were found to be ineffective and overwhelmed to meet the demands of their patrons. Also, zakat institutions were found to be beset by inaccessibility and dwindling resources. It is suggested that the Government utilize the zakat institutions to reach the grassroots for a more significant impact on reducing the SIR incidences.
