Tensile fracture and fractographic analysis of 1045 spheroidized steel under hydrostatic pressure

Void formation in tensile test under hydrostatic pressure is characterized through quantitative metallography, and the fracture mechanism under pressure is analyzed by fractography. Transition of the fracture surface from the cup-and-cone under atmospheric pressure to a slant structure under high pressure is explained on the basis of the void development leading to fracture and the concomitant change in fracture mechanism. The concept of “shear blocks” is introduced to illustrate the features observed on the fracture surface of specimens tested under high pressure. It is postulated that shear blocks evolve to connect the central crack regions with the shear crack initiated on neck surface due to the severe necking deformation under applied pressure.

An investigation into the mechanical properties of K55,N80 and P110 steels was carried out for casing-drilling technology. The obvious presence of bright facets on broken K55 Charpy V-Notch (CVN) sample surfaces was indicative of the effect of microstructure on the cleavage fracture. The appearing of bright facet surfaces of K55 was attributed to the microstructure of ferrite and pearlite. The fracture surfaces of N80 and P110 CVN samples included quasi-cleavage fracture mechanism and dimple fracture mechanism, respectively. The tensile fracture surface of all three types of casing-drilling steels included dimple fracture mechanism, both the N80 and P110 specimen show higher UTS and impact energy values compared to the K55 specimen.

The paper reports on an investigation of the fracture mechanism of both tensile and impact fracture in three types of casing-drilling steels. The results show that the tensile fracture surface of N80 steel includes fibrous zone, radiation area and shear lip zone, and those of both K55 and P110 steels include two zones; all the tensile fracture surfaces of three types of casing drilling steels show the ductile fracture mode, the ductile fracture mode indicated with dimples is observed on all zones; the impact fracture surface of the N80 steel possesses a combined quasi-cleavage and ductile fracture modes, a single fracture mode is observed on the fracture surface of both K55 and P110 steels, the K55 steel impact sample is fractured in a cleavage brittle manner, whereas the P110 steel impact sample is fractured in a dimpled ductile manner.

We investigated the effect of high hydrostatic pressure on the normal grain growth in 2-D aluminium foils. The time dependence of the mean grain area was obtained. It was shown that normal grain growth takes place both at atmospheric pressure and under high hydrostatic pressure. The grain growth rate decreases by a factor 1.3 under high pressure. The activation volume for grain growth was 0.13 of the atomic volume. It was shown that high pressure strongly influences the ratio oflow angle boundaries and general boundaries at the early stages of secondary recrystallization.

An “explosive extratropical cyclone” is an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when there is a very rapid drop in central atmospheric pressure. This phenomenon, with its characteristic of rapidly lowering the pressure in its interior, generates very intense winds and for this reason it is called explosive cyclone, bomb cyclone. With gusts recorded of 116 km/h, atmospheric phenomenon – “cyclone bomb” (CB) hit southern Brazil on June 30, the beginning of winter 2020, causing destruction in its influence over. One of the cities most affected was Chapecó, west of the state of Santa Catarina. The satellite images show that the CB generated a low pressure (976 mbar) inside it, generating two atmospheric currents that moved at high speed. In a northwest-southeast direction, Bolivia and Paraguay, crossing the states of Parana and Santa Catarina, and this draft that hit the south of Brazil, which caused the destruction of the affected states.  Another moving to Argentina, southwest-northeast direction, due to high area of high pressure (1022 mbar). Both enhanced the phenomenon.

This work presents a study related to the grain refinement of an aluminum A2618 alloy achieved by High-Pressure Torsion (HPT) known as a process of Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD). The HPT is conducted on disks of the alloy under an applied pressure of 6 GPa for 1 and 5 turns with a rotation speed of 1 rpm at room temperature. The HPT processing leads to microstructural refinement with an average grain size of ~250 nm at a saturation level after 5 turns. Gradual increases in hardness are observed from the beginning of straining up to a saturation level. This study thus suggests that hardening due to grain refinement is attained by the HPT processing of the A2618 alloy at room temperature.

AbstractWe have studied oxidation of various Si samples including: Ge implanted Si, CVD and MBE grown Si(0.4–4% Ge) alloys, and MBE grown Si-Si(Ge) superlattices. The samples were oxidized in pyrogenic steam (800–1000°C, atmospheric pressure) and at low temperature and high pressure (740°C, 205 atm of dry O2). The oxidized samples were analyzed with RBS/channeling and ellipsometry.An enhanced oxidation rate was seen for all Ge doped samples, compared with rates for pure Si. The magnitude of the enhancement increased with decreasing oxidation temperature. For steam oxidations the Ge was segregated from the oxide and formed an epitaxial layer at the Si-SiO2 interface; the quality of the epitaxy was highest for the highest oxidation temperatures. For high pressure oxidation the Ge was trapped in the oxide and the greatest enhancement in oxidation rate (>100%) was observed.

Copper of different purity levels (4N, 5N) produced by High Pressure Torsion (HPT) with varying processing parameters is investigated utilizing the radiotracer technique. While the degree of deformation is constant, the effect of the applied quasi-hydrostatic pressure and of the impurity concentration on the as deformed samples is analysed. By applying the radio tracer method micro structural aspects are revealed that are not easily accessible by conventional methods. The measurements indicate the formation of a percolating porosity during the HPT process as a function of the applied pressure and (although less pronounced) of the impurity concentration.

AbstractThis paper reports on the properties of a supershort avalanche electron beam generated in the air or other gases under atmospheric pressure and gives the analysis of a generation mechanism of supershort avalanche electron beam, as well as methods of such electron beams registration. It is reported that in the air under the pressure of 1 atm, a supershort (<100 ps) avalanche electron beam is formed in the solid angle more than 2π steradian. The electron beam has been obtained behind a 45 µm thick Al-Be foil in SF6 and Xe under the pressure of 2 atm, and in He, under the pressure of about 15 atm. It is shown that in SF6 under the high pressure (>1 atm) duration (full width at half maximum) of supershort avalanche electron beam pulse is about 150 ps.

For the production of LDPE, high process pressures (>1000 bar up to 3500 bar and above) as well as high temperatures (>100 °C up to 300 °C and above) are required. In order to ensure a safe production process the autoclaves and compressors have to be protected against dangerous overpressure. Rupture discs are typically used to protect this high pressure process itself, as well as the employees, and the environment. Traditionally rupture discs for high pressure applications are manufactured by a weld seam which has an influence on the burst pressure. After installation the applied pressure is nearly fully-loaded on the welding joint. Additionally, the welding joint is another unwanted influencing factor. This increases the possibility of an unexpected failure which leads to an unwanted rupture disc response or, in critical cases, to a rupture disc failure recently after initial operation of the process even at lower pressures than the defined burst pressure. This, in turn, leads to a reduced life time of the disc. A special version of a rupture disc, a High Pressure Rupture Disc (HPRD) is developed specifically for this application. This long life version for high pressure applications has a lifetime which is 5–10 times higher than that of a standard rupture disc, that saves money and installation time. The differences are explained in some minor geometrical changes. This safety device allows a protection of high pressures up to 4000 bar and beyond. The HPRD is a forward acting rupture disc and the burst pressure is adjusted by a combination of material thickness, the height of the dome, and, of course, of the chosen material. An easy and simple geometrical change eliminates the welding joint as an influencing factor, thus eliminating any unwanted responding of the rupture disc. The tolerances for high pressure rupture discs are +/−3% and lower and the HPRD can be used for all kind of different high pressure applications.
