Final Year level of the University Preparatory cycle (FYUP) –in Spanish 2º Bachillerato– is one of the most challenging academic courses. It is extremely demanding academically in itself and by the end of it students must also pass the university entry exam. Yet research has not investigated how students experience this year. We thus explored, using in-depth interviews with 75 students from two public high schools, their attitudes toward this academic year. Our results showed that (a) the participants struggled greatly during FYUP, experiencing high levels of academic stress (that affects their general well-being, mostly because of the high academic demands); (b) students were looking forward to their university experience but were concerned about failing or not finding their place; and (c) they reported a narrow range of learning, motivational, and emotional strategies. This study shows that students face significant learning and academic challenges during FYUP. A clear educational implication is that interventions should be implemented in earlier years to help the students be better prepared.

The purpose of this chapter is to describe experience in the development, use, and evaluation of interactive didactic material oriented towards the ISO GPS system that has been introduced into recent academic courses of subjects of various engineering degrees at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Educational Innovation Group Ingeniería de Fabricación sought to generate a tool that would help students with a learning difficulty that had been identified as generalizable across various degree subjects. Student feedback was utilized in the development and evaluation of this didactic material. The results obtained allow us to confirm that the introduction of these materials has had a positive impact and that this preliminary experience of adaptive learning should be supplemented further in order to extend the significant improvement observed, both in the students' learning and the lecturers' teaching, in the last academic year.

The chapter aims to investigate the impact of the presence of the university on the perceived quality of life of the host community. To this aim, the authors focused on a specific area, that is the historical town center of Naples (as defined by the UNESCO in the World Heritage List since 1995), where five universities are located. Adopting a qualitative and explorative approach, 25 in-depth interviews have been conducted with local universities' stakeholders and content-analyzed through the software Nvivo 10. Thus, the authors identified precisely the multiplicity of activities through which the presence of the university contributes to the socio-economic and cultural well-being of the community of which it is part, thinking about the dynamics that may occur in the case of an urban-located university. Based on the findings, a conceptual model is proposed that may be further validated with new investigations.

(1) Aim: To assess the attitude toward Lifestyle Medicine and healthy behaviours among students in the healthcare area and to demonstrate its association to psychological well-being; (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study is conducted among 508 undergraduates of the University of Palermo (140 (27.6%) in the healthcare area and 368 (72.4%) in the non-healthcare area), during the academic year 2018–2019. Psychological well-being is measured through two dimensions of eudaimonia and hedonia, using the 10-item Hedonic and Eudaimonic Motives for Activities-Revised (HEMA-R) scale, with answers coded on a 7-point scale. The association between demographic and modifiable behavioural risk factors for chronic diseases is assessed through crude and adjusted Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals; (3) Results: Orientation to both hedonia and eudaimonia is significantly associated to the Mediterranean diet (ORAdj = 2.28; 95% CI = (1.42–3.70)) and drinking spirits less than once a week (ORAdj = 1.89; 95% CI = (1.10–3.27)) and once a week or more (ORAdj = 6.02; 95% CI = (1.05–34.52)), while these conditions occur together less frequently for current smokers (ORAdj = 0.38; 95% CI = (0.18–0.81)). Students inclined to well-being consider healthcare professionals as models for their patients and all people in general (OR = 1.96, 95% CI = (1.28–3.00)); (4) Conclusions: The positive relation found between a virtuous lifestyle and psychological well-being suggests the construction, development and cultivation of individual skills are a means to succeed in counteracting at risk behaviours for health.

In this study, it is aimed to examine the effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the psychological, social and educational status of high school seniors preparing for the university entrance exam. In this context; In the 2020-2021 academic year, in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 students from different high school types who were studying in the last year of high school and preparing for the exam, in line with the semi-structured questionnaire, and the data obtained were descriptive analysis and content analysis (coding, code frequency and distribution, creation of themes, Calculation and mapping of relationships between subcodes and subcodes) were evaluated. Within the scope of the qualitative analysis, the effect of the pandemic process on the psychological, social and educational status of the students, a total of 422 codes in four different themes (The effects of the pandemic process on distance education - 131 codes, the effects on student behavior - 10 codes, the effects on students' emotions - 182 codes, concerns arising from the pandemic - 99 code) was created and analyzed. While the subjects that the students emphasized most frequently were “Lessons becoming inefficient” (25 codes), “Negative effects on motivation” (22 codes) and “Uncertainty anxiety” (20 codes), the least coded expression was “Happiness” (1 code). It has been determined that students preparing for the exam are generally negatively affected by the pandemic.

In the academic year 2012/13 the Faculty of Science at the University of Southern Denmark, implemented a didactical tool called the three phase model. The model was used to track the progress of first year students on the university’s academic courses. The paper describes both the incentive for and the development of the three phases model and presents preliminary results based on the evaluations of the first cohort of students.

This chapter presents the different ‘profiles’ identified, showing the statements on which the different profiles (groups of students coming from the three countries) have agreed and disagreed. This part shows how the disagreement reflects the presence of different university experiences. The chapter explores in depth the main topics that have emerged from the study, showing the substantial differences in the university experiences of young people from the five profiles and comparing their positions in several areas: socio-economic background, welfare mixes (role of the family, state support, participation in the labour market during university) and the university experience (financial position, housing and accommodation, well-being, and education).

This article discusses the needs and interests of the university students in Banten Indonesia for learning to write with an integrative approach as an initial stage in the development of academic writing textbooks. The participants in this study were 60 students in the first semester of the 2018/2019 academic year who took an Indonesian language course. It was found that students were familiar with writing activities. But the majority were limited to non-academic genres such as writing poetry, short stories, and writing personal blogs. Also, students have almost the same problems in academic writing, both from linguistic aspects, technical aspects, to issues of developing writing ideas. Another thing that was found in this study was the participation of lecturers who they expected in guiding and providing input during academic writing learning.
