The spread of radical ideology through cyber media was balanced by moderate journalism constructed by the journalism of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah. This study aims to understand the moderation construction of Islamic messages on the nu.or.id and Muhammadiyah.or.id sites. This research uses a constructivist approach with the kind of discourse analysis research model of Teun A. van Dijk. The results of the study describe that thematically, the two sites construct the Islamic message Wasathiyah. The schematic construction of the two sites is constructed with a news journalism frame. Semantic construction on the nu.or.id site emphasizes the connotative meaning of deviation, site; Muhammadiyah.or.id emphasized the importance of preventing religious deviations. Site syntax construction; nu.or.id emphasizes the connotative meaning, site; Muhammadiyah.or.id emphasized denotative meaning. Site stylistic construction; nu.or.id uses allegory figurative language, website; Muhammadiyah.or.id does not use a standardized language style. The rhetorical construction of the site; nu.or.id uses connotative sentences, site; muhammadiyah.or.id uses the phrase 'foreign' as a characteristic of the development of thought. The moderation construction of media cyber-based Islamic messages on both sites is presented in a tolerant manner, does not corner other religions, is fair, maintains a balance of news, and follows the latest events. The results of this study have contributed to the development of news writing based on peace journalism.

The novel of “Akulah Istri Teroris” is the 14th masterpiece from Abidah El Khalieqy as a man letter that raises the theme of terrorist wife life which is always stereotyped by society including for those who wear the veil. It results to them who are still trying in winning their rights as women. This novel is so attractive to be observed because it bases on the reality and most of people still do not it yet so that we can know about the ideology and discourse construction that wants to deliver by the author. This research used a qualitative research with discourse approach of Teun A. Van Dijk. Van Dijk divides it into three dimensions: Textual dimension that examines the structure of text, the view of social cognition, understanding and mental awareness of the author and also social context according to the discourse that grows among of society. The result shows that all the information within the sentences of the novel have coherence and unity so that it creates shape and meaning. In addition, all the information wrap with attractive and simple language style. Discourse analysis that developed by Van Dijk found that this novel becomes one of media for representing the condition of terrorist wife who always get the stigma from various complexities issues but these women show the reader about the fortitude and strength to raise them up from adversity. Novel “Akulah Istri Teroris” merupakan karya ke-14 dari seorang sastrawan Abidah El Khalieqy yang mengangkat tema kehidupan istri teroris yang selalu distereotipkan oleh masyarakat termasuk di dalamnya mereka yang menggunakan cadar. Sehingga mereka terus berusaha untuk merebut hak-haknya sebagai perempuan. Novel ini menarik untuk diteliti karena berdasarkan realitas yang terjadi dan belum banyak diketahui masyarakat  luas, sehingga dari sisi kita dapat mengetahui ideologi dan konstruksi wacana yang ingin disampaikan oleh pengarang.Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian yang bersifat kualitatif dengan pendekatan wacana Teun A. Van Dijk. Van Dijk membaginya kedalam tiga dimensi, yaitu dimensi teks yakni meneliti struktur dalam teks, kognisi sosial yang merupakan pandangan, pemahama dan kesadaran mental pengarang, dan konteks sosial yakni terkait wacana yang berkembang dalam masyarakat.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap informasi dalam kalimat pada novel “Akulah Istri Teroris” adalah saling berhubungan dan memiliki unsur-unsur koherensi sehingga terbentuklah struktur wacana berupa bentuk dan makna. Selain itu informasi dikemas dalam gaya bahasa yang menarik dan sederhana. Tokoh digambarkan memiliki karakter yang kuat. Analisis wacana yang dikembangkan Van Dijk menemukan informasi bahwa novel “Akulah Istri Teroris” merupakan salah satu media untuk merepresentasikan tentang keadaan istri teroris yang selalu mendapat stigmatisasi dari berbagai rumitnya permasalahan yang terjadi, namun para perempuan ini memiliki ketegaran dan kekuatan untuk bangkit dari keterpurukan.

This study was taken as the understanding of management responses remains scarcely understood in theory and practice, especially concerning consumer preferences. This study aims at examining consumer preferences of the action frames and language styles adopted in hotel management responses to online reviews. A multi-method approach, using discrete choice experiments followed by in-depth interviews, was employed. Findings show that past action frames in management responses are preferred by customers due to the certainty, trustworthiness and detailed information provided. Moreover, literal is favoured over figurative language style due to perceived professionalism and conciseness. The current study helps hotel management to further understand consumer preferences of management responses to online reviews, especially regarding action frames and language styles.

Abstract This study is entitled Figurative Language in The Song Lyrics of 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction’s Albums. This study is aimed to identify figurative language and explain the meaning of those types of figurative language found in the song lyrics of 5 Seconds of Summer’s album entitled “Sounds Good Feels Good” and One Direction’s album entitled “Midnight Memories”. The data were collected using the documentation research method. After the required data were collected, they were analyzed using qualitative method. The analysis of the data were presented in a descriptive way to give clear explanation. The findings show that in 5 Seconds of Summer’s album five types of figurative language found in the data; they are: personification, irony, simile, metaphor and hyperbole. While from One Direction’s album four types of figurative language were found; they are: personification, simile, metaphor and hyperbole. There were two types of meaning found in the data; they are: conceptual meaning and connotative meaning. It can be concluded that in the rock band’s album Sounds Good Feels Good irony was found; however, in pop band’s album Midnight Memories irony was not found. Both in those two albums conceptual meaning was more frequently used.

Figurative language can appear in various types and the meaning may not be determined by its components. This study aims to identify and analyze the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics “Passenger's album all the little lights”. There are two theories used in this study. The first is the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger, and the second is the theory of meaning by Leech as the supporting theory. The data in this study were directly taken from Passenger’s fourth album. The album consists of twelve songs. They were collected by documentation method and note taking technique. The collected data were analyzed  using qualitative and descriptive method. This study applied informal method to present the analysis. The result of this study shows that there are nine types of figurative language found in song lyrics. They were allusion, simile, metaphor, irony, personification, hyperbole, dead metaphor, metonymy, and paradox. Most of the figurative expressions found in those songs were similes. Four out of seven types of meaning used in those lyrics in order to understand the figurative meaning in the song lyrics; they were connotative meaning, conceptual meaning, affective meaning, and collocative meaning. All the songs which are analyzed have the main theme about life and love.

This article is based on the assumption that language is not in a social vacuum. Language is more than a set of words that merely linguistic, but also social. Therefore, the current linguistic research should take into account the social dimension in the analysis are critical, such as van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) research model. The critical discourse analysis research  considering the text, context, social cognition, and analysis/social context. Research steps include: exposing the macro structure (thematic), superstructure (schematic), and microstructure consisting of semantics, syntax, stylistic, and rhetoric. Accordingly, this study uses the method read and record while research data has been collected from Suara Merdeka and Kompas newspaper. Finally concluded that the language represents the ideology and power (symbolic) both individual and communal.

The study entitled “Figurative Language in Bullet For My Valentine’s Album Scream Aim Fire” is aimed at finding out and identifying the types of figurative language, especially personification and hyperbole, in Bullet For My Valentine’s Album, Scream Aim Fire, and analyzing the meaning. The documentation method was used to collect the data, and to analyze the data, the qualitative method was applied. This research applied the theory of Types of Figurative Language proposed by Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963) to find and identify personification and hyperbolic expressions from the album, and Types of Meaning according to Leech (1974) to classify and analyze the meaning of personification and hyperbolic expressions. The study indeed focuses on personification and hyperbole only because both are the most common expressions/figurative languages used by the songwriters to personate particular objects or stress and exaggerate their words on the song they write to make it more beautiful, dramatic, and meaningful. 14 out of 15 songs of the Scream Aim Fire album used both personification and hyperbole in their lyrics. 12 of them used both personification and hyperbole, one of them used only personification, one of them used only hyperbole, and the last one used neither of them. As for the types of meaning, there were connotative meaning, affective meaning, thematic meaning, and reflective meaning.

In recent days the advertisement is a most effective way to sell or to market new products of the businessmen or producers. Due to the case, advertisement has great role in selling or marketing of the product. The producers use interesting advertisements to introduce their product by using interesting or different language style. This study focuses on the structural discourse of the advertisement used in Batam Pos daily newspaper in Batam island. Sample of the data obtained from job career column in January 2013. The advertisement consist of the opening, the body and the closing of the advertisement.

The purpose of this study is to identify the metaphorical expression in Manado Malay and also to describe the meaning of those metaphors. Metaphor is a kind of figurative language which uses connotative meaning through the comparison without using the word “like” or “as”. Most of metaphorical expression comes from a human behavior. The subject consisted of speakers of Manado Malay particularly the researcher himself and those who lives in Wuwuk village. The writer used descriptive research. Qualitative research is the suitable method to analyze the metaphorical expression. The writer used qualitative approach to find the actual data about metaphorical expression, the data collections are in the form of words, pictures, rather than numbers. The result shows that there are 53 metaphorical expressions in Manado Malay commonly used in everyday speech. It can be indicate by through, human's behavior, human's characteristics, and feelings, such as “Putar bale” which means someone who is lie and “Bobou seho” which means someone who has drunk. Some other metaphor is used to describe a circumstance such as, “ujang kopi” which mean zenithal rain or refer to the hot rainy weather conditions. It is expected that many other researches could be conducted especially the problem which concerned with metaphorical expression. Studying language and it’s relation with metaphorical expression leave many question to answer. That is why, by conducting this research, other researchers can get some information about metaphorical expression in Manado Malay. Keywords: Metaphorical Expression; Manado Malay; Figurative Language

<p>This qualitative study employed discourse analysis of persuasive language of 115 print advertisements of beauty products from one year issue of three local magazines. Thorough data analysis showed that persuasive language of print advertising is embedded in indirect convincing through an appeal to emotional needs, an appeal to celebrity image, and an appeal to colonial mentality of consumers. Furthermore, persuasive language is embedded in analogy through the use of metaphor and future events. Results also showed that the syntactic and semantic features of print advertising in Philippine context include the use of adjectives, time expressions, figurative language, clipping, blending, poetic devices, imperatives, code-switching, and problemsolution structure. An interesting social issue generated from the result of the study is the myth of women’s agelessness and perfection.It is recommended that a similar study be conducted to radio and television advertising to improve the practice of advertising language that is reflective of culture, behavior, and educational practices.</p><p><br /><strong>Keywords:</strong> Advertising, discourse analysis, persuasive language, print advertising, Philippines</p>
