This chapter provides an overview of the literature examining the role of religion and military service in the desistance process. It also identifies outstanding issues and directions for future research. It first presents an overview of research examining the role of religion in desistance and highlights measurement issues, potential intervening mechanisms, and a consideration of faith-based programs as criminal justice policy. Next, this chapter covers the relationship between military service and offending patterns, including period effects that explain variation in the relationship, selection effects, and the incorporation of military factors in criminal justice policy and programming. The chapter concludes by highlighting general conclusions from these two bodies of research and questions to be considered in future research.

ABSTRACT Introduction Over the past three decades, a growing research base has emerged around the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the biological, psychological, social, and relational health and development of children and adults. More recently, the role of ACEs has been researched with military service members. The purpose of this article was to provide a brief description of ACEs and an overview of the key tenets of the theory of toxic stress as well as a snapshot of ACEs and protective and compensatory experiences (PACEs) research with active duty personnel. Methods Ninety-seven active duty personnel completed the study including questions pertaining to demographics, adverse childhood experiences, adult adverse experiences, and PACEs survey. Results Significant findings pertaining to ACEs and PACEs were found by service member’s sex and rank, with higher ACE scores for men and enlisted service members. Conclusions The contrast by rank and sex in relation to ACEs punctuates the need for attention to ACEs and protective factors among early career service members in order to promote sustainable careers in the military.

Abstract This article considers the proliferation of Korean native camp shows and the roles of Korean women entertainers at the military service clubs of the Eighth United States Army in Korea in the 1950s and the 1960s. The role of the “American sweethearts” in USO camp shows—to create a “home away from home” and boost the morale of the American troops during wartime—was carried out by female Korean entertainers in the occupied zone at a critical moment in US-ROK relations during the Cold War. The article argues that Korean entertainers at military clubs were meant to perform the entertainment of “home” and evoke nostalgia for American soldiers by imitating well-known American singers and songs. However, what they performed as America was not simply the reproduction of American entertainment but often a manifestation of their imagination; they were constructing their own version of the American home. Their hybrid styles of American performance were indicative of how the discourse of the American home itself was constructed around ambivalence, the very site where women entertainers were enabled to exceed the rigid boundaries of race and gender, transcend their roles as imitators, and exercise their agency by productively negotiating this ambivalence.

Целью исследования является определение роли самостоятельности в военной службе офицеров и ее влияние на успешное выполнение служебно-боевых задач. Рассмотрена структура деятельности человека, а также место в ней элементов самостоятельности. На основе исследования научной литературы определяются основные структурные элементы понятия «самостоятельность», что позволяет интерпретировать результаты проведенного анализа отзывов на выпускников военных вузов войск национальной гвардии Российской Федерации. Выявленные недостатки в подготовке военных специалистов позволяют сделать вывод о недостаточном развитии самостоятельности в их служебной деятельности. Из этого следует, что зафиксированный уровень развития самостоятельности препятствует проявлению нестандартного, нешаблонного мышления, а также значительно затормаживает саморазвитие офицера как личности и специалиста. Особое внимание уделяется формированию практических навыков курсантов военных вузов, соответствию решения практических задач на занятиях реальным запросам командования различного уровня. Проанализированы возможные причины формирования практических навыков выпускников на уровне ниже ожидаемого и проблема адаптации младших офицеров к новым вызовам. Также в ходе исследования определены основные пути решения проблемы морального устаревания предлагаемых в ходе практических занятий «жизненных» ситуаций. Важно отметить, что уровень профессиональных компетенций выпускников военных вузов войск национальной гвардии Российской Федерации тесно взаимосвязан с практикой их применения. Отмечено, что деятельность курсанта и офицера схожа по своей структуре, что позволяет предложить более результативные способы формирования их поведения в нестандартных/критических ситуациях. The purpose of the article is to determine the role of independence in the military service of officers and its influence on the successful fulfillment of service and combat missions. The article examines the structure of human activity, as well as the place of elements of independence in it. Based on the study of scientific literature, the main structural elements of the concept of “independence” are determined, which allows interpreting the results of the analysis of responses to graduates of military universities of the National Guard troops of the Russian Federation. The identified shortcomings in the training of military specialists allow us to conclude that there is insufficient development of independence in their service activities. As a result, the recorded level of development of independence prevents the manifestation of non-standard, unconventional thinking, and also significantly inhibits the self-development of an officer as a person and as a specialist. Particular attention is paid to the formation of practical skills of cadets of military universities, the correspondence of the solution of practical problems in the classroom to the real requests of the command of various levels. The article discusses the possible reasons for the formation of practical skills of graduates at a level below the expected level and the problem of adaptation of junior officers to new challenges. Also, in the course of the study, the main ways of solving the problem of obsolescence of the “life” situations offered during practical exercises were determined. It is important to note that the level of professional competence of graduates of military universities of the National Guard troops of the Russian Federation is closely interconnected with the practice of their application. The article notes that the activities of a cadet and an officer are similar in structure, which allows us to offer more effective ways of shaping their behavior in non-standard / critical situations.

This article addresses the complementary work of psychological notions and courts in handling suicides occurring in the course of military service. We suggest the category of mutuality between individuals and social settings as an analytic perspective for the study of suicide, illuminating not only how suicide is constructed, but also theorizing the effects of this construction. Our findings rest on content analysis of 34 verdicts on cases of suicide occurring within the Israeli military. In these verdicts, mostly issued to resolve disputes between bereaved parents and state authorities, Israeli courts decided on the causes of death and the responsibilities of the military and state for soldiers’ suicides. Courts base their decisions on the ambiguous psychological concept of suicidal individuals, explaining self-demise as the result of an internal malaise and avoid addressing the coercive circumstances within which Israeli soldiers operate. By conclusively linking self-demise to suicidality, courts produce an idea of death-seeking soldiers, who fail to ensure their own well-being as well as to defend the common good. Courts render the difficulties encountered during military service mental and personal, thereby contracting, standardizing, and individualizing the idea of mutuality between soldiers, families, and state. To explain these repercussions of juridification and psychologization processes, we draw attention to Durkheim’s conceptualization of contractual obligations and non-contractual sentiments. We elaborate on the Durkheimian connection between solidarity and suicide, by highlighting the outcomes of their interrelated management, especially the courts’ shaping of thin mutuality when arbitrating suicide disputes. Adopting psychological reasoning and assessing personal responsibility, courts potentially fail in their constitutive role of discussing matters of collective concerns.

Заболевания полости рта являются одними из наиболее распространенных заболеваний, с которыми сталкивается здравоохранение во всем мире. Эта проблема затрагивает людей всех возрастных групп. Анализ литературных данных позволяет выделить множество факторов риска развития кариеса и его осложнений, которые могут касаться военнослужащих помимо несбалансированного питания, курения, неудовлетворительной гигиены полости рта и нерегулярного посещения стоматолога. Множество международных исследований демонстрируют актуальность проблемы стоматологических заболеваний среди военнослужащих, указывая на отсутствие своевременной диспансеризации, низкую мотивацию к регулярному посещению стоматолога и тщательному проведению самостоятельной гигиены полости рта. Кроме этого, стоит учитывать специфику выполняемых военными задач за весь период службы, во время которых они оказываются под воздействием множества неблагоприятных факторов, которые в свою очередь, влияют на микроэлементный состав организма, что непосредственно влияет на общее состояние здоровья. Необходимость применения в армии РФ более актуальных по своему составу витаминно-минеральных комплексов (ВМК) уже неоднократно описана в современных исследованиях. Но до настоящего времени не проводилось работ по изучению взаимосвязи между микроэлементным статусом организма и состоянием твердых тканей зубов и пародонта Diseases of the oral cavity are one of the most common diseases that public health has worldwide. This problem affects people of all age groups. An analysis of literature data allows us to identify many risk factors for the development of caries and its complications, which may concern military personnel in addition to unbalanced nutrition, smoking, poor oral hygiene and irregular visits to the dentist. Many international studies demonstrate the urgency of the problem of dental diseases among military personnel, indicating the lack of timely medical examination, low motivation for regular visits to the dentist and thorough self-hygiene of the oral cavity. In addition, it is worth considering the specifics of the military tasks performed for the entire period of service, during which they are influenced by many unfavorable factors, which in turn affect the microelement composition of the body, which directly affects the overall health. The need to use in the army of the Russian Federation more relevant in its composition vitamin-mineral complexes (VMC) has been repeatedly described in modern studies. But so far no work has been done to study the relationship between the microelement status of the body and the state of hard tissues of teeth and periodontium

The book argues that concerns about sexuality were fundamental to how the U.S. Army managed its deployments and military occupations throughout the early decades of the twentieth century. Far from being just a marginal release from the stresses of military service and combat, sexuality stood at the center of the military experience. The book uses the concept of a “sexual economy of war” to highlight the interconnectedness of everything from homosexuality, competing conceptions of masculinity, and the proper role of military families, to issues like rape and sexual violence, as well as attempts by the army to combat venereal disease via the regulation of prostitution. The book reveals that the contentious debates of the past two decades surrounding sexuality and the U.S. military are, in many ways, echoes of similar issues from the early twentieth century.

This article considers the experiences of 12 U.S. Army women combat veterans. These women served in historically significant roles as some of the first women to officially serve in combat in the U.S. military. This article focuses on the role of gender in these women’s experiences in the context of the masculine culture of the military. We explore how they used performance of masculinity and metaphors of family to fit into their combat units. We also deliberate on how sexual harassment was used against these women in ways that communicated that they were not fully accepted. Finally, we consider the tension between empowerment and disempowerment in these women’s narratives of their military service.

Abstract Maintaining good wellbeing in older age is seen to have a positive effect on health, including cognitive and physiological functioning. This paper explores experiences of wellbeing in a particular older adult community: those who have served in the military. It aims to identify the specific challenges that ex-service personnel may have, reporting findings from a qualitative study focused on how older veterans told stories of military service and what these stories revealed about wellbeing. We used a qualitative approach; data are drawn from 30 individual interviews, and from engagement with veterans in workshops. Analysis was conducted using a data-driven constant comparison approach. Three themes are presented: how loneliness affects older adult veterans; how they draw on fictive kinship; and the role of military visual culture. Although participants had diverse experiences of military service, they felt that being a veteran connected them to a community that went beyond association with specific experiences. Using narratives of military experience to connect, both in telling stories and by stories being listened to, was vital. As veterans, older adults were able to access each other as a resource for listening and sharing. However, it was also exclusionary: civilians, because they lacked military service experience, could not empathise and be used as a resource.

Introduction. While the military is viewed differently in Canada and Ukraine, inclusion of veterans into civil society is important for both countries. Transition from the military service to civilian life can be challenging. Therefore, the role of different institutions and organizations, that focus on trying to improve what is available for former soldiers and their families has to be discussed. The purpose of the article is to explore the role that higher educational institutions can and should play in assisting former military to better integrate into civilian society – civil society. Methods. Researchers conducted a literature review of journal articles and other relevant written materials as well as informal interviews with key informants. Results. Using the mixed methods of literature search, informal interviews with key informants, and observation, the article considers the way “veterans” are conceptualized in both Canada and Ukraine and how two particular universities in Canada and Ukraine now attempt to meet the needs of former military members, wondering how their needs may differ and be similar to other students of higher education. Originality. The article concludes that, since civil society in general has a responsibility to support veterans in their transition, and notes that there are gaps in both understanding of need and awareness/availability of appropriate resources, a full needs assessment is the next step. Conclusion. The authors recommend a pilot needs assessment at the LPNU in Lviv Oblast where a number of veterans have made their homes.
